IHAVEACUNNING PLAN –FOR SKILLS

In theBBC television comedy Blackadder, therewas astanding joke between two of the principal characters, the titular Edmund Blackadder and his lowly manservant Baldrick, which involved him claiming to have a “cunning plan.”

Thecunning plan usually involved some ingenious but half-baked solution to help his master in resolving a problem and regularly turned into calamity; for instance, when Blackadder –playedby Rowan Atkinson –reminded Tony Robinson as Baldrick: “Let us not forget you tried to solve the problem of your mother’slow ceiling by cutting offher head.”

But just occasionally the hapless Baldrick’splan actually worked and turned out to be “A plan so cunning you could put atail on it and call it aweasel.”

It is my hope that that the new “West Midlands and WarwickshireLocal Skills Improvement Plan” will fall into the latter category

Led by Coventry and WarwickshireChamber of Commerce in partnership with the Black Country Chamber of Commerce and the Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce the Local Skills

Improvement Plan (LSIP) looks to put employers right at the heart of the skills training system.

In essence it is aset of agreed priorities that employers, learning providers and stakeholders can get behind to create change by shaping the futureofthe skills system.

And by doing so driveup economic prosperity for businesses and their employees.

It is great to see that all of the consultative work that has been carried out between the employers, learning providers and other stakeholders, such as the Chambers of Commerce, the West Midlands Combined Authority and representative trade bodies has finally paid offwith an improvement plan that positions businesses and their leaders right at the forefront of responding to the skills challenges that arecurrently beingfaced across the region. Challenges including how we will respond to the current and futuregreen skillsneeds as business manages the transition to net zero, and how an agile and responsive system for post-16 education and training can be built, creating meaningful in-work progression for local residents.

With thepublication of the Local Skills Improvement Plan, the region’semployers have

clearly spoken about what they see as their frustrations with the current system when it comes to accessing technical training.

Atotal of 74 per cent of those surveyed, as part of the improvement plan, have not worked with post-16 education and training in the last five years.

Thereare significant barriers to doing so, such as the lack of budget for carrying out training, lack of stafftime to both undertake and oversee training, lack of knowledge about training and the training that is available not being suitable, which have been clearly identified.

It is now down to all of the consultation participants who have helped to define the problems with skills training to work to collectively address them and put them right through the regional improvement plan.

In my own organisation at Dudley College Iwillbe responding to the Local Skills Improvement Plan in writing our own next three-year strategic plan.

Areally cunning plan which equally Ihopewill in the end turnout to be as “cunning as afox who has been appointed Professor of Cunning at OxfordUniversity.”

WORLD FIRST FOR MOVERS

International removal and storage company

Burke Bros Moving Group has become the first moving company in the world to receive PAS2060 certification.

It has become fully carbon neutral by measuring and offsetting all carbon emissions across Scope 1, 2and all 15 categories in Scope 3.

The Wolverhampton company, based in Fox’s Lane, has directed a strategy to improve its environmental credentials and take responsibility for their emissions as it works towards net zero.

This not only neutralises their emissions, but also demonstrates positive humanitarian benefits to the less privileged in our world.

“The journey to Net Zero is long, especially within an industry that heavily relies upon HGV and sea transportation, wherezero carbon technology is still realistically adecade away

“The climate crisis didn’t happen overnight, and it certainly won’tbesolved overnight, but the fact that Burke Bros Moving Group have now established their boundary period carbon footprint, means they can now begin executing the plan

to reduce them to Net Zero by 2040, 10 years ahead of the UK backstop,” explained transport manager Steve Pitt. The team weregiven the brief and have delivered being first in our industry to step up to the challenge.”

BATTERYTESTING SITE IS LAUNCHED

TAEPower Solutions, a new power management subsidiary from fusion energy leader TAETechnologies, has opened anew battery testing facility in Dudley creating more than 20 jobs.

The site is based at the Black Country Innovative Manufacturing Organisation on the grounds of the former Dudley railway station.

TAEPower Solutions is using the site as abattery prototype-and-test facility,in order to develop, validate, and industrialise modular battery packs for e-mobility and energy storage.

The new Dudley site will help on its path to manufacturing modular

battery packs for all forms of e-mobility including cars, trucks, buses, and rail.

“The most important –and expensive –part of an EV is the battery,” said Kedar Munipella, chief executive of TAEPower Solutions.

“The battery testing begun by TAEPower Solutions at the BCIMO facility is focused on boosting performance and delivering electric powertrains that aremoreefficient, reliable, elegant, and sustainable.”

BCIMO has created anew transport innovation hub.

AWARDS RETURNING

The winners of the second Ladder for the Black Country Apprenticeship Awards will be revealed on November 16.

Walsall FC’sPoundland Bescot Stadium is the venue for the big night that is being organised by the Express &Star with the Ladder and new headline sponsors for 2023 in Walsall Council.

Rob Colbourne from the Ladder team said that the first awards which wereheldatGrand Station in Wolverhampton city centrelast year hadbeen ahuge triumph.

“If someone had said to the ‘Ladder Foundation Founders’ that the apprenticeship initiative would still be going strong 10 years on, I’m not surewewould have believed them.

“What started offasan extension of the Ladder for London, to get 500 apprenticeship starts in the Black Country, and showcasing everything good about apprenticeships through one of our key partners, the Express &Star, was the starting point in ajourney that has grown to over 5,000 apprenticeship starts along with opening aLadder School, job

fairs, impartial information advice and guidance to school leavers about apprenticeships, awork experience Ladder academy and apprenticeship awards,” said Mr Colbourne.

He added that due to the great success of the first Black Country Ladder Apprenticeship Awards, therewas asubstantial appetite for asecond awards.

“Weare thrilled that yet again, the Express &Star is supporting us to champion all that is good about apprenticeships in the Black Country and the positive impact it has on employers and individuals alike,” said Mr Colbourne, of Performance Through People in Walsall.

The chairman of the Ladder Apprenticeship Foundation Kevin Davis said: “As chairman of the Ladder Apprenticeship Foundation, Iamsopleased the Black Country Ladder, through the awards, arecoming back to Walsall.

“I say back to Walsall, as the Ladder, albeit operating across the region, was birthed in the town in 2014, when agroup of key Walsall partners including

its council, alongside others, translated the Ladder for London newspaper campaign to the Black Country.Subsequently Shropshire, Staffordshire, Birmingham, and Coventry and Warwickshire followed. We have facilitated the creation of thousands of new apprenticeships through our partnerships with news groups like the Midland News Association.

“With the Black Country awards launched last year in Wolverhampton, we continue to address the skills, and jobs challenges of our region, and we aregratefultothe training provider networks, the LEPs, councils, and no less MNA and its Express &Star title, because the Ladder legacy only works because of this collaboration.

“I was so pleased, that the Black Country Awards, which had its successful launch at Wolverhampton last year, like its other Midlands counterparts, is one of those Ladder legacies, beyond the articles.

“In November Ihad the pleasure of opening of Walsall’snew Ladder School building, Mercian Trust’s multi-million pound alternative

provision, supporting some of the most disadvantaged students that need atailored approach to teaching and learning.

“With thanks to our partners, BCTG, PTP,and GBSLEP,this was followed in February with the opening of the Ladder Skills academy in Birmingham. Opened by Mayor Andy Street, the academy offers young people the opportunity to ‘have ago’ at avariety of careers, gaining experience in construction, modernmanufacturing, digital technology, dentistry, retail, childcareand healthcare.”

Mr Davis added that the Ladder Apprenticeship Foundation and its partners werecontinuing in championing the ‘Ladder of opportunity’, the mobility of learners through, education and work.

“Webelieve adiversity of apprenticeships areakey factor towards amoremobile, andjust society

“These Black Country awards will magnify the best of those championing this effort and Itrust, be avery enjoyable night for all,” enthused Mr Davis.
