Apprentices are pointed in right direction by Compass

Compass Group UK and Ireland, the largest foodservice catering company in the UK, launched Our Social Promise in 2022.

It outlined an ambition to positively impact one million lives by 2030, from both within and outside the organisation through job creation, education, training, community and charitable engagement. Part of this strategy includes the development of its people, but importantly it also focuses on creating opportunities for those in the communities Compass operates in. Compass is investing in talent and their skills for the future through schemes like apprenticeships and its Career Pathways programmes, that shows people such as cleaning and culinary workers, through to central functions and support staff, how to ‘Move Up’, ‘Move Across’ or simply ‘Master your Craft’ – offering learning, advice, mentoring and progression. A key part of this is apprenticeships, with over 40 programmes on offer ranging from culinary, facilities, business management, events, HR, finance, IT/digital, sales and procurement – which take candidates from level 2 up to level 6 and 7 degrees. One example of success is its market leading Forward with Marcus Wareing programme, which began in the summer of 2021 as a bespoke development course, which runs alongside a Level 4 senior culinary

chef or Level 5 operations departmental manager apprenticeship standard. It focusses on taking senior culinary talent to the next level of their training, with an emphasis on modules including commercial,

culture, sustainability and the craft. Later this month, Compass will also officially launch Xcelerate with Edgbaston. The regional community skills and learning hub, will be

a state-of-the-art facility providing front of house, back of house, facilities management and IT digital solutions training for budding chefs and hospitality professionals of the future.

New training facilities at City of Wolverhampton College’s Wellington Road campus, in Bilston, are set to boost opportunities for employers in the automotive, construction and engineering sectors looking to take on apprentices to expand their workforce.

The college’s recently extended construction centre, along with its purpose-built £8.1 million Advanced Technology and Automotive Centre which is due to open in September 2024, offers industry-standard training facilities for students on full-time and part-time courses, as well as those combining earning and learning on an apprenticeship programme. Apprenticeships are a cost-effective way to train new employees or upskill existing members of staff with the latest industry knowledge, leading to improved skills across the business, motivated staff and better productivity in the workplace. The college’s new facilities will enable it to expand the range of apprenticeship programmes it offers in all three sectors, develop bespoke training packages to meet the specific needs of individual businesses and address skills gaps across the wider industries.

College to offer more apprenticeships The college is also keen to hear from companies interested in supporting the future workforce by running masterclasses for students, sharing insights into working in the industry, promoting apprenticeship or full-time vacancies to work-ready candidates, offering work experience, helping with job applications or carrying out mock interviews, as well as donating equipment for the new centres or sponsoring individual training areas. Employers interested in taking on an apprentice or working in partnership with the college should contact the employer engagement and business development team on 01902 317541 or e-mail employerenquiries@wolvcoll. ac.uk For details of apprenticeship training offered by the college go to www. wolvcoll.ac.uk/demographic/employers

Shining the light on opportunities for apprentices Today’s 16-page apprenticeships supplement in the Express & Star shines a spotlight on the wide range of businesses and organisations across the West Midlands that are providing vital training and opportunities for people to start a career. It comes in the midst of National Apprenticeship Week, which runs until Sunday. The theme for 2024 is “Skills for Life” with a focus on how apprenticeships can help individuals to develop the skills and knowledge required for a rewarding career, and employers to develop a workforce with future ready skills. In the Black Country and Staffordshire the Ladder Foundation’s Ladder initiatives are in full swing and have had enormous success in generating a wave of fresh apprenticeships that have helped a huge number of people of all ages take a first step on the rung towards a new career. We hope that the colleges, businesses and training organisations that are featured today will help even more in the region to transform their lives through learning new skills through apprenticeships.

The Mayor, a long time support of the Ladder apprenticeship campaign, was among those to take up the “have a go” sessions by trying his hand at a virtual welding session overseen by experienced trainers. At the National Apprenticeship Week event, the “have a go” hubs offered hands-on demonstrations and workshops and enabled visitors to

Earn and learn on an apprenticeship

You can start an apprenticeship whether you’re starting your career, want a change in career or you’re upskilling in your current job.

An apprenticeship is a job with training and the chance to gain qualifications. As with any job, an apprentice gets paid, while taking part in formal on-the-job training and study for relevant qualifications linked to their role. Annie Guy, who is progressing her career to management level, said: “When I left school I didn’t want to go to university and get into debt. I wanted to continue learning while earning a wage, so an apprenticeship was the obvious choice. I secured a business administration apprenticeship at Dudley Council and I haven’t looked back. I achieved my Level 2 and 3 in business administration, which resulted in my promotion and permanent job as business administration assistant. I’m progressing my career by undertaking a team leader apprenticeship.”

Apprenticeship or university?

At university, you’ll specialise in a specific area of academic study.

As well as learning skills in business, apprentices are earning a wage Apprenticeships are work-based training programmes where you learn practical skills in a working environment and you can still achieve a degree qualification. One of the main differences between an apprenticeship and studying at university is you can “earn while you learn”, and your employer will be funding your study, so no university debt. With an apprenticeship, you earn

money while you study your profession at Dudley College of Technology. Your academic study will directly support the practical experience you get in the workplace and you’ll gain a relevant qualification that will help you apply for positions in the future, climbing the career ladder and setting you apart from those with little experience. For some students, this is the perfect balance of learning work-related

The college offers careers in many sectors including Early Years skills, studying and earning money. Former apprentice Luke Hipkiss completed his apprenticeship and was promoted after achieving a HNC in engineering at the college. He then graduated with a firstclass honours degree in mechanical engineering at Birmingham City University. Luke said: “Opting for an apprenticeship enabled me to get a university degree, without having the debt of university fees looming

over my head. I was also able to buy my first home at 24 and look forward to a bright career future.”

changed since leaving school, to being apprentice of the year and focusing on learning a new trade. “If you enjoy hands-on experience and are stuck on which way to turn, I’d encourage you to look into an apprenticeship. It was the best decision I made.” Wolverhampton Homes also supports office-based apprentices. Chloe, a previous housing administration apprentice adds: “I’ve always known I wanted a career that

would give back to the community and was thrilled to be offered an apprenticeship with Wolverhampton Homes. “I was able to gain experience from across the business and I’m grateful for my mentors, who have supported me along the way. “Last year, I was over the moon to secure a permanent position as a tenancy and leasehold officer. Fast track your future in transport

The Transport Skills Academy is encouraging people in the West Midlands to consider a career in transport – and reap the benefits of earning while you learn.

The TSA – founded by Transport for West Midlands in 2022 – provides a one-stop destination for the current and future transport workforce to access resources and grow the skills required to undertake a career in the transport industry. Apprenticeships play a vital role in growing the transport workforce and addressing skills gaps in areas such as digital and data. TfWM is on the lookout for future local transport stars, with 2024 apprenticeship vacancies becoming available in areas including project management, health and safety, business administration and digital and data. Michele Roberts, Head of Transport Skills, explains the value of doing an apprenticeship: “At the Transport Skills Academy, we are on a mission to challenge perceptions of the transport sector and inspire people – no matter their age or background – into a career in the sector. By providing people across the West Midlands with resources and guidance, we’re able to connect

One year later, Alicia was promoted to Bus Services Coordinator. Apprenticeships are not just for school leavers – the TSA encourages learning at all stages of your career journey.
