INVESTIGATION AT CARE HOME Allegations of poor treatment lead to action from company and council
A care company is carrying out a “full investigation” into allegations of poor treatment at a 66-bed home in Shropshire. Telford & Wrekin Council has confirmed that it has temporarily suspended new placements for publicly funded elderly clients at The Farmstead, in Bryce Way, Lawley Bank. A spokesperson for Sandstone Care Group, which acquired The Farmstead Care Home on May 31 this year, said it is carrying out a full investigation into allegations made.
Action plan “We take all complaints very seriously and are carrying out a full investigation into the allegations that have been made. “We are working on an action plan in conjunction with Telford & Wrekin Council, supported by specialist external care home consultants Caresolve, and good progress is being made. We are committed to providing residents with the highest possible standard of person-centred care.” A spokesperson from Telford & Wrekin Council said: “The council has temporarily suspended new placements at The Farmstead whilst
Report by David Tooley we work with Sandstone alongside our partner health professionals to ensure that the residents there are being cared for and are safe.” Sandstone Care Group took ownership of The Farmstead Care Home in Telford earlier this year. The 66-bed home, offering a mix of residential, dementia care and general nursing across its three floors, was acquired by Octopus Real Estate and is operated by Sandstone, which has headquarters in Chester and Warrington, on a 35-year lease. The home, which is rated ‘good’ by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and is based at Bryce Way, Lawley, joined six other homes in the Sandstone Care Group in Powys, Merseyside and Lancashire. The care home received its ‘good’ rating during an inspection in March, 2021. The CQC reviewed the information and data available to it about The Farmstead on October 6, 2022. At that stage they had not found evidence to reassess the rating but said they would “continue to monitor information about this service”.
Akwasi’s stunning trees
Patrols after thefts spate Police have been touring areas around Telford after a recent spate of thefts from cars. It comes after reports of two unknown males trying car door handles in the area. Last Friday saw officers from Wellington Safer Neighbourhood Team conducting high visibility patrols around Wellington, Arleston, Hadley, Leegomery, Admaston and Dothill. They said that during their tour of duty there were no reports of theft from vehicles. Police say owners should never leave their vehicles running and if they have a keyless entry car should find a safe place for the key at home.
Clanging for the climate
Akwasi Okyere brings smiles to passers-by with his bold garden You might think the proud owner of these amazing corkscrew-shaped trees has splashed out a fortune at a garden centre. But in fact they are all his own work. Akwasi Okyere, of Leegomery, Telford, found he had an eye for
something distinctive after he planted a number of conifer trees several years ago. He was amazed by how tall they grew, so he thought he’d do something a little different and has brought smiles to passers-by with Leegomery’s own topiary treat.
Climate activists are planning to make a noise in the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution so that COP27 does not pass without notice. Extinction Rebellion Telford and Climate Action Hub Telford have joined together to organise a Clang for COP event on November 12 to raise public awareness of the issues. A spokesperson for a series of events being planned in the area said: “We will be asking local people to bring drums, pans and pan lids and gather on the iconic Iron Bridge to make some noise and raise the alarm about the climate emergency. “We will start to gather at 11am.” n Steps – Page 8
