Bridgnorth Town Council is looking to set up a hub of venues in the town to help residents stay warm and safe this winter.

Warm Welcome locations have already been set up across the county and nationally but currently there is only one in Bridgnorth – at the library in Listley Street. Councillors discussed setting up further venues across the town at a meeting on Tuesday night, with three identified. If finalised, the town council may provide some funding to help set them up, staff them and provide ongoing support. Two organisations in Bridgnorth have expressed an interest in running a Warm Welcome group: the Baptist Church in West Castle Street and St James’ Church Hall in The Grove. Councillor David Cooper, who proposed the expansion of the groups, said: “The problem at the moment is space and location. Bridgnorth Library is a smallish building and it might not be suitable for large numbers of people coming in. “We could do with a few locations where people in other areas of the town don’t have to go too far to access this service.” Meanwhile Bridgnorth Food Bank says the number of people they are helping is rising, with 65 adults and 31 children accessing it this week. They are short on jam, coffee, tinned meat, biscuits, milk squash and shampoo.

Hundreds to attend club’s firework show

Hundreds of people are expected to turn out at Bridgnorth Rugby Club this Saturday for the annual firework display. Last year’s event sold out but there are still some tickets left for Saturday’s displays, which will take place at Edgar Davies Ground in Low Town. There will be junior and main displays at 7.15pm and 8pm, a hog roast and licensed bar, food stands and entertainment. Advanced ticket prices are £6 or £7 on the gate and under 13s £3.50. The George, at Hollybush Road, is one of eight Bridgnorth entries in the guide, produced by the Campaign for Real Ale. It joins the Black Horse and Fosters Arms as new entries, with The Black Boy, Gold-

en Lion, Old Castle, Railwayman’s Arms and Shakespeare Inn all retaining their places from last year. Sarah Stokes from The George said they always try to keep a variety of real ales on tap from different breweries as well as different kinds of beer from dark to light and mild. She said: “It is great we have been

recognised in this way and join so many other pubs in the town. “The Good Beer Guide is the bible of the industry and it is not easy to get into the book.” The latest edition shows the county has 14 breweries, with five having been lost over the past year. l Guide – Page 12
