CRUCIAL 999 COVERAGE IS REINSTATED Responders back at work after ‘operational matters’ resolved

Emergency responders, who were suspended from attending 999 calls last month, can now get back to saving lives.

The Rhayader First Responders were stopped from helping their community on September 29 by the Welsh Ambulance Service Trust (WAST). The move was made after it was mutually agreed to temporarily pause St John Ambulance Cymru’s cover in Rhayader and the surrounding community until “operational matters” were resolved. But on Friday last week the emergency scheme was reactivated. The exact reason for the service suspension remains unknown. Rhayader Town Council said it was “fantastic news” the re-

The council said: “We would like to thank everyone who made representations to the Welsh Ambulance Service, in particular Rhayader Mayor Councillor David Davies, Councillor Angela Davies and Brecon and Radnorshire MP Fay Jones. “We would like to send a massive thank you to our local volunteer responders. “We appreciate this has been a difficult time, when all you ever wanted to do was help save lives.” Lee Brooks, executive director of operations at the Welsh Ambulance Service, said: “Officers from St John Ambulance Cymru and the Welsh Ambulance Service have

worked together to see that the volunteer alternative responder scheme in Rhayader could resume following what was intended to be a temporary period of stand down. “There are of course broader pressures across health and social care. “We are committed to providing communities the best possible services we can in these circumstances, whether these be directly from the ambulance service, our volunteers, or those working in partnership with us.” A spokeswoman for St John Ambulance said: “After working closely with senior leaders at WAST last week, we are so pleased that our volunteers are now able to continue with the lifesaving work of the St John Ambulance Cymru’s Alternative Responder team in Rhayader.”

Information hub is offering cost of living help An information hub with advice and support about dealing with the cost of living crisis has been launched. Powys County Council has worked closely with partner organisations to pull together a wide range of information in one place to ensure people know what help is available and how to access it. The online hub can be found at powys.gov.uk/costofliving, bosses have said. The council is also cre-

ating a network of warm spaces across Powys. These are places that can offer people a warm welcome this winter and a chance to socialise, work or take part in activities whilst keeping warm. Councillor Matthew Dorrance, cabinet member for a fairer Powys, said: “As the cold winter months get closer, the impact of the cost of living crisis will be felt more now than before. Our new hub has been creat-
