THEIR STRIPES CONFUSE BITING AND STINGING INSECTS – SO ZEBRAS ARE NOT BITTEN AS MUCH AS OTHER ANIMALS IN THE WILD.

ZEBRAS are

, which means they only eat plants.

Zebras have a variety of sounds like barks, brays, and snorts and they communicate with each other.

Zebras sleep standing up.

In captivit y , when ZEBRAS mate with donke y s or h orses the y can p roduce offs p rin g with sill y names li k e: Zeedonk (zebra and donkey)

Zorse (zebra and horse)

Zon y (zebra and pon y )

areZebras fast and can run up to 65perkilometers hour.

They have very good HEARING and EYESIGHT , which helps them detect danger from far away.

I AM A VERTEBRATE. THIS MEANS I HAVE A SKELETON OF BONES WHICH SUPPORTS MY BODY. IT GIVES MY BODY SHAPE AND STRENGTH.

There are FIVE groups of animals that have skeletons.

They all have a backbone made of small bones called VERTEBRAE. These animals are grouped as VERTEBRATES. Their skeletons are made of bone and cartilage. Their skeletons support their bodies from the inside. Cartilage is flexible and tough. It is found at the joints. Joints are places where bones meet.

ENDOSKELETONS & EXOSKELETONS

An ENDOSKELETON is covered by muscles and soft body tissue. It does not protect an animal but it can support larger sizes and more weight. An endoskeleton grows with the animal.

An EXOSKELETON is like having a skeleton on the outside of the body. Some animals have no bones at all. These animals have hard skins or shells on the outside of their bodies. This hard layer protects the animal and is called an exoskeleton. Animals with exoskeletons are called invertebrates.

POLLUTION NOISE

NOISE IS ANY UNWANTED SOUND.

Sounds are things we can hear. But some sounds are very loud and not pleasing to the ear. They can be ongoing or very sudden.

When loud or unpleasant sounds harm the environment or living beings, we call it NOISE POLLUTION. This could be sounds from cars, airplanes, construction sites, or even loud music.

THE SOLUTION

NOISE POLLUTION can confuse animals and make it hard for them to find food or avoid predators.

For example, loud noises can make it hard for birds to hear each other’s calls.

If you are regularly exposed to these loud noises, you can suffer permanent hearing loss. Noise pollution can make it hard to sleep, can cause headaches and make people feel stressed.

We can reduce noise pollution by planting trees (they absorb sound), using quieter machines, and being considerate by keeping the volume down when using devices like TVs or radios.

TICK THE THINGS THAT COULD CAUSE NOISE POLLUTION.

the net!

READ THE PASSAGE AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS.

Netball is played in most schools in South Africa as well as in other countries, including Australia and New Zealand. There are seven players in a team. The sport is mostly played by girls.

To play the game, the girls must wear the school netball uniform, which is usually a skirt and a golf styled T-shirt in the school’s colours and with a badge on the T-shirt. They wear short socks and comfortable white takkies on their feet.

The aim of the game is to see which team can shoot the most goals by throwing the ball through the hoop in their goal circle. The court is divided into three equal sections. The girl in the middle circle starts the game, with the ball.

When the whistle is blown she throws the ball to her teammates and they continue to pass the ball until they get it to their own goal circle. Only two girls may shoot the ball into the hoop, the Goal Shooter and the Goal Attack.

You may throw or bounce the ball to a teammate. A very important rule is that you may not run with the ball or run while bouncing the ball. The girls also have to try to prevent the other team from getting the ball. If the other team does get the ball they must defend them to get it back.

TICK THE CORRECT ANSWER

1 Are there are six players in a netball team?

2 IS THE COURT DIVIDED INTO 7 SECTIONS?

3 Is the main aim of the game to run the fastest?

4 Is the game played in New Zealand?

5 Is the whole team allowed to shoot a hoop?

6 Can you run and bounce the ball at the same time?
