LONG GONE BUT WHY?

Extinct means that this creature is no longer living anywhere on earth. Every one of those creatures has died out. Sometimes it has to do with man – or it could be a big event that happens in nature, like a volcano erupting or an earthquake.

Scientists are still puzzling as to why dinosaurs became extinct.

WHEN? It happened about 65 million years ago. They all became extinct roughly at the same time. A lot of animals that were alive at the same time like crocodiles, salamanders and birds survived.

CONFLICTING SCIENTISTS

Some scientists think that a huge rock from space hit Earth. Others think volcanoes erupted continuously for a long time. Others think both things happened, and the earth was covered in a huge cloud of ash, smoke and dust that blocked all the sunlight. No sunlight reached the earth, and it became dark. This darkness lasted a few years.

LIGHT

Without light – the plants would die, so the PLANT-EATING DINOSAURS would be without food. When the plant-eating dinosaurs died FROM STARVATION, the MEAT-EATING DINOSAURS had no food, so they died too.

COLD

When it was dark it became very cold and the temperature on earth dropped. Many other dinosaurs did not survive the big changes in temperature.

DINO DATA

READ THIS INFORMATION ABOUT DINOSAURS THEN ANSWER THE QUESTIONS ON THE NEXT PAGE.

Dinosaurs lived long ago. There are two main types of dinosaurs, CARNIVORES which are meat eaters and HERBIVORES which are plant eaters.

The carnivores had huge, sharp teeth to tear the meat. They were very scary looking. The TYRANNOSAURUS REX was a fierce carnivore. It had short arms and longer legs.

Herbivores liked to eat plants. The BRACHIOSAURUS loved wading in the water eating water reeds.

The TRICERATOPS had three horns on its head. Tri means three, just like a tricycle has threeItwheels. was herbivore.a

The PTERODACTYL could fly. It was fast and quick in the air and could catch its prey easily.

HERBIVORES had long necks to reach to the top of high branches to get their food.

The BRONTOSAURUS was also a herbivore.

LEOPARDS ARE ONE OF SOUTH AFRICA’S BIG FIVE.

They can live in many different places. Your can find them in rainforests, mountains and even deserts.

They eat anything from small birds and insects to large buck, depending on where they live.

are called ROSETTES because they look like little roses.

LEOPARDS are very stealthy. They get very close to their prey without being noticed.

LEOPARDS are excellent climbers and often drag their prey up into trees to keep it safe from other animals. They usually live alone and are very territorial, marking their areas with scratches on trees and their scent.

LEOPARDS can run up to 58 kms an hour to catch their prey.
