Where Are My Lady Composers?

Clinician: Robin Giebelhausen, University of New Mexico This session will highlight female composers and ideas for using their music in activities for the general music classroom. Women have been composing music for well over 1200 years and yet, the most common names in the music classroom are the typical three: Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart. In this session, Giebelhausen will share names that should share the stage with these musical greats: names like Boulanger, Talma, Beach, Portman, Price, and many more. Besides sharing their names and stories, this session will highlight examples and ideas for using their music at the center of activities for the general music classroom.

Sequential Rote Warm Ups for String Orchestras Clinician: Rebecca Henry, Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University Orchestra directors - you can improve your studentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; technique within orchestra rehearsals through the use of sequential rote warm ups. These are designed to develop flexibility, and ultimately help students â&#x20AC;&#x153;feelâ&#x20AC;? their way towards making a beautiful sound. We will target the following skills with examples from the beginning to advanced levels: Left Hand facility (posture, patterns, levels) Shifting (Pre-shifting, harmonics, shifting during open strings, patterns up the strings) Bow (Bow hold, distribution, the frog, spiccato) General: Goldilocks and the 3 Bears - Using extremes to find a balanced position Bring your instruments! Popular Music Education and Modern Band Clinician: Warren Gramm, Manager of Program Outreach, Little Kids Rock Sponsor: Little Kids Rock, as an MMEA Organizational Champion While popular music can be a powerful tool for generating interest in music, many teachers steeped in formal learning struggle to apply informal techniques to unfamiliar music. This workshop-demonstration is centered on the belief that all people are musical, demonstrated quickly and in an enjoyable manner for all ages by leveraging the musical choices of the individual. Participants will learn to play guitar through popular music - focusing on reading through iconographic notation - to use improvisation, and to demonstrate how all people are musical and can enjoy playing through familiar repertoire. Sample lesson plans and free online resources will be used and shared in the workshop for all participants.

Formed in 1985 by RCA, the Grammy-nominated, Juilliard-trained, largest-selling string quartet in history, The Hampton (Rock) String Quartet forged new ground that hundreds of groups have now followed. Because of the demand for HSQ's arrangements, their principal arranger and cellist, John Reed, together with Janna Glasser, an entertainment attorney, formed Mona Lisa Sound to publish HSQ's rock string quartet arrangements to make them available for everyone. The Montgomery Blair HS Chamber Orchestra will perform selections from the Mona Lisa Sound library, and John Reed will work directly with the students at the session.

The orchestra performed at the 2019 NAfME Eastern Division Conference in Pittsburgh, PA after being selected from more than 170 entries. A Wolf Trap Foundation grant allowed a commissioned work to be written for the ensemble by British composer Paul Lewis. He conducted the world premiere performance of Salute the Silents! at the historic AFI Theatre in Silver Spring.

Frostburg State University Chamber Singers Director: Scott Rieker, Frostburg State University The FSU Chamber Singers, a select, auditioned ensemble, will perform unaccompanied works that pair repertoire from Western Europe with repertoire from North and Latin America, featuring works by Lauridsen, Grau, Brouwer, Messiaen, and more. The session will use this repertoire to explore singing "on the breath" according to Malde et. al. in What Every Singer Needs to Know About the Body.

The Frostburg State University Chamber Singers is a select, auditioned ensemble that promotes individual musicianship, advanced techniques and quality of ensemble. Unfortunately, music education degree programs rarely teach the skills necessary to deal with the stress of teaching and making music. The purpose of this session is to support early career music teachers in developing the skills to manage stress and burnout. Participants will learn to monitor internal reactions to stress and to calm themselves before responding with compassion toward themselves and others. Specific activities include cultivating mindful awareness through meditation, dealing with unwanted thoughts, reframing stress, the role of compassion in teaching, and developing a personal practice.

These composers were introduced to the presenter Shannon Shaker through the creation of The Female Band Composition Competition. Join a live ensemble as we explore their compositional journey along with their award-winning grade 1 - 4 works for band. These pieces were selected by a panel of 30 judges who evaluated a total of 41 entries. Those in attendance will leave with knowledge of new female composers that they can program immediately, along with tools and an understanding for successful, intentional, and diverse programming.

Yes, Uke Can! Teach the Ukulele with a Song-Based Curriculum Clinician: Robin Giebelhausen, University of New Mexico Ukuleles have lots of possibility for the music classroom. They can be used as an accompanying instrument that is both portable and suitable for very young children’s voice. They are also great for little hands and easy to play.

Giebelhausen will teach some ukulele skills that can be useful as a musician and educator; songs that can be used to gradually introduce skills; and present some possibilities for arranging, improvisation, and composition. There will also be a discussion of the place of ukulele clubs in middle and high school settings.

Effective mentors adapt to the specific needs of their mentee. Some mentors may use a more direct approach, while others may adopt a more indirect approach to mentoring. Participants will learn when to adopt a certain approach and what factors may influence these choices. This session will model effective mentoring dialogues and provide strategies and techniques for improving the mentor/mentee relationship. Tips for guiding post-observation conferences and productive questioning strategies will be discussed.

They can be used as an accompanying instrument that is both portable and suitable for very young children’s voice. They are also great for little hands and easy to play.

The UMD jazz ensembles are comprised of more than 100 students. The Jazz Ensemble is one of only three elite bands invited to perform annually at the UDC Calvin Jones Big Band Jazz Festival, one of the most anticipated events on Washington D.C.'s jazz calendar and frequently broadcast on the BET Network. Combos and big bands also perform outreach concerts at regional schools and venues such as the National Archives, D.C. Public Library, and National Building Museum as well as at campus events such as Maryland Day, galas, and commencement activities.

The concept of helper notes will be introduced to assist with sightsinging skill building. The SmartMusic™ website will also be introduced as part of an interactive demonstration. In addition, common characteristics of the two sight singing tasks on the AP Music Theory exam will be discussed.

Saturday Afternoon What should beginning guitarists know and be able to do by the end of an introductory guitar class? All musicians need to know and understand how to read standard music notation, but guitarists’ needs lie beyond the staff. Often, guitar music is written using tablature, chord diagrams, or is passed on aurally. Additionally, a great deal of improvisation is expected from guitarists out in the 'real world.' The session will suggest ways to approach teaching guitar that is holistic, that supports all elements of guitar literacy, and that is applicable to 'real life' guitar playing.

Physical Health and Mindfulness Techniques for the Stressed Music Educator Clinician: Karen Koner, San Diego State University Musicians’ health is an important topic for performers and educators alike.

Psychological stress plagues musicians in regard to competition and performances, stress impacts teachers who struggle with time management and finances, and both of these can lead to teacher burnout, which continues to impact our teaching profession. This interactive session, presented by a current music teacher educator who is also a certified yoga instructor, will discuss tips, ideas, and activities to assist with anxiety, to improve focus, to prevent tension and strain, and to work to be a mindful music educator.

Empowered music students have a voice and a choice, they create music, they connect to others outside the classroom, they ask questions and can find the answers, and they own the learning process. In this session, participants will learn about these qualities of empowered learners and discover how music teachers can shift instructional techniques to facilitate to students owning their learning. Through these shifts, students get the highest-quality music education available. Examples will be provided, along with an introduction to technology tools to help empower students.

Building the Foundation: Teaching Articulations and Scales in Beginning Band Clinician: David Wagner, St. Mary’s County Participants will learn and gain practical experience with student-friendly approaches for teaching and assessing basic woodwind and brass articulation techniques (single- double-, and triple-tonguing) and a pedagogically appropriate sequence of major and minor scales for beginning and intermediate woodwind, brass, and percussion students. This session will include discussion of ways for teachers to incorporate practice of those fundamental skills into their daily rehearsals and teaching processes, and participants will also receive rhythm and scale sheets that can be used to teach, practice, and assess both articulation skills and scale fluency.

Dulaney High School Chamber Orchestra Director: Barry Chesky, Baltimore County The Dulaney High School Chamber Orchestra will conduct a performance demonstration of grade 3 through 5 repertoire included on the MODA String Orchestra Literature List. The repertoire to be performed will encompass a wide variety of musical styles. In addition, information concerning both the musical and technical challenges presented to the students when preparing the performed repertoire will be disseminated to audience members. The session is geared primarily towards secondary level orchestra directors.

The Dulaney High School Chamber Orchestra consists of students in all high school grade levels. The Chamber Orchestra was the demonstration ensemble for a new string music reading session at the 2017 Maryland Music Educators Association All-State Conference. During the current school year, the Chamber Orchestra earned straight “Superior” ratings in Class VI and received straight “A/A-” in all categories from all four judges at the Baltimore County Instrumental Music Assessments and straight “Superior” ratings in Class VI at the Maryland State Orchestra Festival Conference. In addition, the Chamber Orchestra performed for the Maryland's First Lady Student Art Exhibition.
