BEHIND THE SCENES LETTER FROM THE EDITORS: What is in a magazine? By definition, it is a type of book with a paper cover that contains stories, essays, pictures, etc., and that is usually published every week or month. However, our magazine is much more than that. Every month we work to bring you the best, most relevant, entertaining news. The staff put their heart into what they do, bringing you information on things very important to us and our community. Through this magazine we are able to share things happening within our school. Our goal is to present to you our best work, and to keep you reading until the very last page. We want to thank everyone for taking time out of their day to read our student magazine. Every student that contributes to this magazine has their own story that is shown through each article. Each piece is written with the writer’s personality andpassion. It is a piece of the student’s heart that is shared with every single reader. We greatly appreciate those who actively read our magazine. Without an audience, there is no magazine. You help shape our content, our image, and our mission. Thank you.

HALE STORM MADEE KELLEY Senior Adam Hale. He’s no stranger to Southwest Missouri. From the Friday night lights to the College of the Ozarks art show, you can see and hear his name everywhere. Adam has so many impressive achievements, but upon interviewing him, I realized football and art were the ones he was most proud and passionate about.

prized piece he’s ever created is his tailgate. It’s an airbrushed painting of a cowboy riding his horse with dust flying up around it. Adam says, “It’s not my best one but it’s me I suppose.” Beyond his classwork, Adam is also a Teacher’s Aide for the Art teacher, Mr. Locke. “Adam is like my right arm… well, maybe my right AND left. He’s always tackling projects from other teachers and principals that, without Adam, would make my life crazy busy!” says Locke.

In regards to football, Adam has played since 5th grade. Hale Storm is a 6’3 and 260 pound cowboy that squats a school record of 670 pounds. He is number 63 on the field but truly number 1 in our hearts. Sophomore year was the first year Adam started varsity, believe it or not. His favorite memory was winning an argument with Coach Moler during sophomore year over why he made the mistake of going out on punt return. Of all of the memories, the thing he’ll miss most is “getting to play with great guys.” Senior year was a successful year for him and by far his favorite, he admits. His favorite memory this year was Shaun and Josh’s goal line stand during the Cassville game. “It was astonishing,” he says.

Around the school he makes posters for Dr. Sooter, screen prints t-shirts for numerous clubs and organizations, helps Mr. Essick with his graphic design kids, and designs posters for the football program. Many students, knowing of his talent, also come to Adam for tattoo designs. He works outside of the school as well. Hale made a four foot tall airbrushed Bible out of cardboard for the local church, Lifesong.

Adam has a lot of future plans. He doesn’t plan to pursue art or football, but he does intend on going to Crowder College in Neosho for Criminal Justice. PROMPOSAL IDEAS TAYA RACZAK With prom right around the corner, it’s time to start thinking about the perfect way to ask that special someone. There are a lot of ideas and different ways to ask someone, • but it takes a little bit of thinking to find the perfect way. It is also great to keep in mind that the guy doesn’t always have to be the one to ask. If you know of a person that would make the perfect prom date, go for it! While thinking of the perfect promposal, you should keep in mind the other person’s interests. It is a great idea to make a promposal that fits the other person, rather than you. This could also increase the chance of that person saying yes as well. • First, some tips; asking someone to prom can be very nerve-wracking, and cause someone to get ‘cold feet’. You need to be prepared, that way you are confident when you ask. You also need the time to plan it out. Unless, of course, • you are just going to walk up to someone and just ask them in the spur of the moment. Basically you need to give yourself time, and try not to make it a last minute thing.

Are they interested in Baseball/Softball? Make a poster (Or write it on a baseball) saying “I might strike out asking this, but will you take a swing at prom with me?” Again, with this one you can add anything extra to it to make it better. Baseball bats and gloves are often seen with this on Pinterest.

Do they love food?

Are they interested in Track or cross country? •

Buy him/her a pair of tennis shoes with a cute note taped on the inside. Write something such as “I’m so happy you ‘ran’ into my life. Will you ‘run’ to prom with me?” Or “I’ve been disTRACKted with prom running through my mind...”It is a cute way to buy them something they will use and love, in addition to creating a cute memory for their prom.

Buy some doughnuts and write on the box “I donut want to go to prom with anyone else.” This one is a tad bit cheesy, but who would turn down free doughnuts? Buy a tackle box, and fill it up with gummy worms, gummy bears, skittles etc. and write a note saying “You would be the perfect catch for prom.” One of my favorites, buy chicken wings, and write a note on the inside saying, “I’ve never asked anyone to prom before, so I’m just going to wing it… So will you go to prom with me?”

In conclusion, finding the perfect way to ask should be creative and memorable. If you’re a senior, this should be the best prom, so why not ask in the best way possible? It’s the last year to make these memories with your fellow classmates, so we should be making a stretch to make it perfect. For juniors, if you can’t find the perfect way, or date, there is always next year to make that happen. Prom is just a time for Make a two sided poster saying “______, I’ve been trying us all to have fun and make some memories. What is a better to track you down. I relay want you to stop Running and way to make memories rather than having a good time with go Prom with me.” With this poster you can add whatev- some of the greatest people you know? You should be able to er you want to make it a little extra. Balloons are almost look back at prom 10 years from now and still be able to have a smile on your face. always a good choice.

FOOD

VALENTINE’S RECIPES MISTI HIGGINBOTHAM Valentine’s Day is all about spoiling your significant other, and what better way to do that than make them food?! Anyone that I know would much rather have food over a stuffed animal. Ingredients The different Valentine’s Day foods are endless • 3 cups flour but here are a couple that would make anyone • ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa happy on this holiday.

RED VELVET SUGAR COOKIE BARS WITH CREAM CHEESE FROSTING

• ½ teaspoon salt • 1 teaspoon baking powder • 1 cup butter, softened • 1½ cups sugar • 2 eggs • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Valentine’s Day Mini Cherry Heart Pies Ingredients • 1 box refrigerated pie crust • 11 oz cherry pie filling • 1 egg • 1 tablespoon milk • white sparkling sugar

• 2 tablespoons (one 1-ounce bottle) red food coloring

Cream Cheese Frosting: • 2 8oz cream cheese, softened • ½ cup butter, softened • 2 cups sifted powdered sugar

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 350. 2. Using a 3 to 4” heart shaped cookie cutter, you should get 8-10 pies from 1 box of crusts. Cut as many shapes as you can, use rolling scraps as needed. 3. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. 4. Mix together egg and milk to make an egg wash. 5. Place half of the hearts on prepared pan(s). Use egg wash to wet the edges of the hearts. 6. Place a small amount of the pie filling in the center of each. 7. Make a small x cut in the center of the remaining half of the hearts. 8. Place an x heart on top of each filled heart and press and crimp edges. 9. Brush sealed pie with egg wash and dust with sparkling sugar. 10. Bake for 14-16 minutes until crust is browned Allow to cool.

• 1

teaspoon vanilla

Instructions 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Have a 9x13 inch pan ready. Lining with aluminum foil and spray it with cooking spray so that the bars easily lift out. 2. In a medium bowl whisk together flour, cocoa, salt, and baking powder. Set aside. 3. In a mixing bowl add cream, 1 cup softened butter, and sugar until light and creamy. For about 2-3 minutes beat in the eggs, vanilla, and food coloring or until combined. 4. Add the flour mixture until a soft dough forms. Press into the bottom of the 9x13 inch pan. Bake for about 20 minutes until the edges start to pull away from the sides and a toothpick entered into the center comes out clean. Allow to completely cool before frosting. 5. To make the cream cheese frosting beat together the cream cheese and butter. Add the powdered sugar and vanilla. Beat together until smooth. Frost the top of the bars and enjoy!

NEW YORK CITY RAYCHEL DOOLEY As many people know from our numerus Facebook posts 9/11 Memorial and conversations we’ve had, Ethan Greiner and I traveled to The Big Apple to tour and audition for our dream school, This is definitely a must see. Sure, you may feel bad Marymount Manhattan College. We saw and learned a lot of watching documentaries but never really understand the tragdifferent things. I’ll give you a little taste of what everything edy because most of us were infants/toddlers when it hapwas like. pened. Visiting the museum and seeing some of the fire trucks that had been ruined when the buildings fell and hearing the phone calls from people telling their loved ones their last goodbyes was truly heart wrenching. My favorite part of the This is probably the most efficient way of traveling in entire museums was a quote on a wall that said “We came in the city and probably the most affordable, other than on foot. as individuals. And we’ll walk out together.” My entire proOn the subway you’ll see all sorts of different people. You spective on the event was changed with that visit. could see anything from a crew of dancers to a 15 year old boy playing some sick beats on a bucket—while playing the harmonica. You may also see some people who resemble the villains from home alone. But, you do your best to avoid them. Honestly, the subway is where you will see the most interesting things in a short period of time.

The subway

Navigating the city Unless you are a super genius with a photographic memory, your GPS will be your best friend. As you can imagine NYC is huge and finding your way around is not an easy task most of the time. The streets are like spider webs that split into a different road every couple of blocks. Along with the confusing streets everything may seem close by until you have to transfer to 3 different subway lines to get 8 miles away. It’s nothing like driving places in good ‘ole Reeds Spring. That 8 mile trip that may take you 10 minutes here will take you about 20 there. Everyone is in a hurry, and you can’t wait until the last minute to leave because you never know what kind of delays you may have. 12

Watching Misery We watched a play called Misery, which was originally written by Stephen King. The set of the show was phenomenal. The coolest part of it all was that the actors were Bruce Willis and Laurie Metcalf. I’m sure I don’t have to clarify who Bruce Willis is, but Laurie Metcalf is Aunt Jackie from Rose-

Ethan’s and My Audition

The entire reason we went to NYC was to visit MMC and audition into our programs. We’ve both been academically accepted but in order to study acting and directing we had to audition for the programs. Our audition processes were similar. Both of us had to prepare a monologue that fit with our personalities and perform it to the best of our abilities. This process took place in a class setting with about 20 other kids in each group. I had professor named Ellen and she was incredibly active. Walking into the room we had to remove our shoes and do 50 wacky jacks. If you don’t know what wacky jacks are, they’re basically a chaotic version of jumping-jacks. You essentially just throw your body into a bunch of different ways and get your heart rate up. While everyone was going she gave direction to see if we could take it well. One kid had to do 50 pushups while singing his ABSC’s then had to perform his piece. Another kid had to run and chase a girl and get her to stop by the words he was saying. It was definitely an interesting time. In addition to my monologue, I had to participate in an interview with one of the professors, present a portfolio, and talk about my strengths and what I find most important about being a director. I learned a lot just from listening and watching others. Regardless if I make it into my program, I will cherish the knowledge I was given in just one day.

Overall thoughts Moving to NYC has been a goal of mine since I was 9. For the longest time it seemed like a distant dream until I was accepted into the school. Visiting was phenomenal and the 13

DONALD TRUMP ABBY WILLIAMS

It seems like every time you turn on your TV these days, all you hear is talk about the upcoming presidential election. I believe many people would agree that Donald Trump is probably the most talked about candidate running for the 2016 presidential election. Most people either love Trump or they hate them; there’s really no in-between. Due to the fact that Donald Trump is such a hot topic of discussion, I thought I would take it upon myself to go around our school and ask my peers and teachers about their opinions on Trump and how they would feel if he were to be the next president of the United States. I found that most people did not want to talk about Trump and refused to share their opinions on him, even after I informed them that they could remain anonymous if they wished. I understand that politics is a very personal topic for many people but I was pretty shocked that it was so difficult to find students or teachers that willingly shared their thoughts with me and most of the ones that did, asked to remain anonymous.
