BEHIND THE SCENES

Letter From the Editor:

Graphic Editor:

For most of us, summer is the light at the end of a long tunnel, cluttered with textbooks, equations and the typical teenage drama. Summer is a time to unwind and to recharge your brain, which is overflowing with enough information to make your head hurt. It’s a long journey that every student looks forward to in one way or another, one that certainly changes the person that follows its course of adventure. Despite the light we see the season in, something about the fall sweeping in and the hot months coming to a rest as school returns is so appealing. However, when it gets difficult we sometimes don’t see past all the stress and worry that comes naturally with being in high school. Sometimes being a kid is tough, but it’s up to us to make the memories that help us keep up with winter closing in and the sunshine taking a vacation. Summer is supposed to have the little things that get us through. It’s the promise of more sunshine when the dreary weather won’t end, the promise that we’ll be able to touch the water and watch the foliage rustle in a cool breeze. Just the knowledge that we’ll once again see the summer sunset and feel alive again is enough to help us feel good when it seems like you’ll never get past the troubles. Summer may not last forever, but it’s what we experience in the hazy months that keep the summer alive in ourselves and each other. It’s truly what makes up an ‘eternal summer’.

fall 2015 sports preview MAdee Kelley

School is back in session, and you know what that means: sports. For many students, the pain of getting up early and getting back into routine is more familiar; like the athletes, who have spent the whole summer preparing for their sports season to approach. To kick off the year, we have our fall sports, which include football, volleyball, softball, cross country, and girl’s tennis. In football news, we have two new coaches: Chris Mettloch from Pierce City and Jared Anderson from El Dorado, Kansas. Coach Anderson is married to Miricle Anderson and they have two sons, Drake, 3, and Conner, 5. Though this year has a lot of potential, there are a few people that you should keep an eye out for. Adam Hale, senior, has been a three year starter and provides great leadership for the team. Nick Haddock, senior, has worked extremely hard and is a smart, athletic kid that coaches expect a lot out of on and off the field. Colton Pomeroy, senior, plays a big part of both sides of the ball and is a very important piece to

the team. Head Coach Lance Gosch also shares what he thinks will be the team’s biggest strength so far: “On offense we have a lot of good skill kids with good speed. On defense our strength should be up front good size and the players are very athletic.” Sadly, for a few people, it will be their last high school football season. This year’s seniors are Jeff Akers, Shaun Baker, Jarod Cole, Adam Gasper, Wyatt Givens, Jareb Grinder, Wyatt Gutting, Nick Haddock, Adam Hale, Tate Johnson, Tyler Morgan, Isaac Perez, Colton Pomeroy, Trevor Stevens, Adam Taylor, Dakota Teague, and Josh Williams. Volleyball is also introducing a new coach. Coach Pryor, who started teaching math here last year, is from Van Buren but grew up in St. Louis. Pryor is married and has a 13 month old daughter named Isabel. For the 2015 season, keep an eye on Ashley Hill, junior, and varsity setter who earned second team all-conference and all-district honors in the 2014 season. We are told also to look out for Madison Bauer, junior,

8

who has earned varsity letter both her sophomore and freshman years. Head Coach Nichols shares what she believes is the team’s biggest strength going into this season: defense. “We are working hard [in our defence] to always be in the right position and try to anticipate where the ball is going,” she shares. Volleyball also participated in many leagues and camps, including taking second at Hollister League. The seniors on the court this year are Zoe Boes, Caitlin Gault, Juli Morton, Bailey Romeiser, and Megan Strayer. Softball has been working hard this summer, by taking advantage of summer weights with the school, attending clinic in July, and the various leagues they participate in. A new addition to the softball team is Coach Megan Jenkins from Pierce City. Marlana Byrne is a new volunteer this year. She’s from Reeds Spring and is married to David Byrne. They have two kids together, Shelby, 14, and Easton, 11. According to Head Coach Scott Walker, the team’s strengths going into season

are the work ethic, team chemistry, and general attitude. Seniors on the field this season are Lizy Knittel and Jamie Booth, who have both been playing since 3rd grade and also “provide good leadership on the field and in the classroom,” Coach Walker says. At the Jamboree the girls beat Hollister 15-0, Hillcrest 4-0 and lost to Norwood 1-0. The coaches all agree that this year looks very successful for them. Girl’s tennis is also gearing up for a great season. New Coach Rob Marshall is a teacher from the Middle school. He is married with two kids and played tennis in college. If you make your way out to the courts, keep an eye on Delaney Mattix, Lauren Hustead, Mickey Curtis, and Tyan Burnett. They are the first and second doubles teams, along with Katelyn Lambert and Mariah Thompson with the third doubles team. The team describes their strengths as being able to work well together and stay strong as a team, especially in doubles. They keep up a great attitude throughout all matches. There is a total of sixteen girls on the team this year--a young team with lots of potential. The only senior on the court this year is Delaney Mattix. Boys cross country is looking good this year. They ran all summer long to log their mileage and they also hosted a home camp. Several runners attended the Wilderness Running Camp near West Plains. Head Coach Matt Locke says, “Our

strength this season is our cohesiveness as a team. Strength in numbers was never more evident than it is this season.” Coach also says to look out for all the seniors, Reno Randle, Matt Krulic, and Aaron Bible. He says that the talent and leadership these guys provide the team will determine how fast they develop as a team.

Hornibrook will also be joining them this year. The only senior on the team is Madi Bagg. Fall sports are a great way to meet new people and make friends at the start of the school year. Make sure to go to football games on Friday nights at 7 pm at the stadium, volleyball on Tuesday or Thursday nights: JV at 6 and Varsity at 7 in the main gym, and cost is $2 for students and $4 for adults. Softball games are usually on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the fields, and tennis matches are on mostly on Tuesdays at the Stonebridge Court but make sure to check the calendar online.

We didn’t forget about girls cross country. This summer Madi Bagg, Rachel Bagg, Claire Hornibrook, and Bailey Locke all attended the Joe Bill Dixon Running Camp where they tent camp, ran, and learned about training, nutrition, and team building. Girls cross country also hosted a camp of their Also, make sure to own where guest speaksupport our sports ers discussed topics teams by participaton how to improve ing in our theme running.
