How long it took to build?

• Just over four years. the Bridge was open to vehicular traffic on May 28, 1937.


How many people died? • Eleven men. On February 17, ten more men lost their lives when a section of scaffold carrying twelve men fell through the safety net.


What was the motivation for creating the bridge? • The motivation was to get people where they needed to go and to build new pathways.


Are there any structural issues? • There were no structural issues with the Golden Gate Bridge.


How much did it cost?

• 35 million dollors. also with all these things. $423,000 for Administrative and Preliminary Expenses, $4,068,000 for Financing, and $1,334,000 in surplus.


Other interesting facts • The Bridge was built by 10 different prime contractors and their subcontractors. • 38 painters work on the bridge, along with 17 ironworkers who replace corroding steel and rivets



Brief History

• The Golden Gate Strait is the entrance to the San Francisco Bay from the Pacific Ocean. The strait is approximately three-miles long by one-mile wide with currents ranging from 4.5 to 7.5 knots. It is generally accepted that the strait was named "Chrysopylae", or Golden Gate, by John C. Fremont, Captain, topographical Engineers of the U.S. Army circa 1846. It reminded him of a harbor in Istanbul named Chrysoceras or Golden Horn.
