History The original chief engineer, Joseph B. Strauss, designed a rather unsightly cantilever and suspension structure in 1916. Though attempt were made to refine the design, it wasn't until Consulting Architects Irving F. Morrow and his wife Gertrude C. Morrow stepped in that the current look and design were imagined and implemented. The bridge opened for traffic 1937.


Deaths • 11 deaths during construction


Cost Construction began on January 5, 1933.[9] The project cost more than $35 million.[27] The Golden Gate Bridge construction project was carried out by the McClintic-Marshall Construction Co., a subsidiary of Bethlehem Steel Corporation founded by Howard H. McClintic and Charles D. Marshall, both of Lehigh University.


Length of Construction • The Golden Gate Bridge took slightly over four years to complete. Construction on the bridge began on January 5, 1933. The bridge was first opened to motor traffic on May 28, 1937. The bridge opened one day earlier for Pedestrian Day on May 27, 1937.


Structural issues • There hasn’t been any structural issues so far


Interesting facts The Bridge was built by 10 different prime contractors and their subcontractors. These contractors are no longer in business and our agency did not have the employment records. As of April 2011, 1,929,896,448 vehicles have crossed the Golden Gate Bridge (includes northbound and southbound) since opening in 1937.
