The National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women’s Clubs, Inc. was founded in July 1935. The founding members were owners, managers, college graduates and other professional licensed women who managed to realize some measure of personal success at a time when there was no national “movement” to improve the lot of Black Americans. The Association’s headquarters in Washington, DC consists of clubs throughout the United States, Ghana, Nigeria, Bermuda, and the Caribbean. The North Jersey Unit of the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women’s Clubs, Inc. was founded by Josephine Keene in 1940. During the early years, the North Jersey Unit was maintained through the efforts of a small core of dedicated and enthusiastic members. Today, the North Jersey Unit has thirty three dynamic and daring active members, including eleven Life Members who are sharing their experiences, exchanging information and encouraging opportunities for African American women and youth in our local and global communities. Members of the North Jersey Unit play an essential role in achieving the Association’s goals. We have contributed to community service for seventy-four years, addressing concerns through programs, workshops, seminars and activities in an effort to improve the quality of life in our communities. For 74 years, the North Jersey Unit has been on the forefront in providing services and programs to the communities we serve. This year, we are pleased to recognize women who, like our Founders, are visionaries and have helped to shape the community and have brought meaningful ideas and programs that have made a positive impact on the lives of the residents. Congratulations to you, our honorees, for your steadfast devotion to helping others. Each of you has been an inspiration and has made significant changes in the lives of others. Greetings Sisters & Friends It is my pleasure to extend warmest greetings on behalf of North Jersey Unit of the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women’s Clubs Inc. I am extremely pleased to welcome you to our 58th Annual Founder’s Day Luncheon. The National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women’s Clubs, Incorporated mission is to promote and protect the interests of African-American business and professional women; and to serve as bridges for young people seeking to enter business and professional careers. Our Founders Day theme: “Back to Business: Honoring Our Founders-Celebrating the Vision” truly epitomizes what the dynamic women of this organization stand for and the affect that we have on our community. Imagine a world in which we all shared our gifts and bounty with each other rather than focusing on competition and self-preservation. This is exactly the kind of world Sojourner Truth, the icon of the Women’s Equal Rights Movement, envisioned when she posed the infamous question, “Ain’t I a woman? The answer has been resounding as an affirmative from then to 1935 when seven women came together and decided that they too envisioned such a world. They founded the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women’s Clubs, Inc. (NANBPWC). The work to make that vision a reality continues even today through the programs and projects executed by the committed dedicated women of the North Jersey Unit. These ladies continue to hold the banner high and live the question’s answer, “YES” women can and do make a difference! As Governor of the Northeast District, I am indeed honored to greet those of you who have taken time today to join the valiant women of the North Jersey Unit in their 58th Annual Founders’ Day celebration. These magnificent club sisters have been responding to the clarion call of Sojourner for seventy four years and have been faithful to the ideals and goals of their own North Jersey Unit founding fore-mothers. They took up the gauntlet and have been, for every year of their existence, positively impacting the local community in their geographic area and making notable contributions to the lives of women and girls and residents which they serve with care, concern, high standards of quality, and honor. In order to fully appreciate the value and significance of this dynamic celebration of which you are a part, it is important for you to know that the North Jersey Unit has garnered honors and recognition for their work, professional and business approach to their projects, and for the high caliber of their members. The North Jersey Unit has been a stalwart community partner providing resources, services and skills, charitable activities, and scholarships for the purpose of inspiring and assisting students to pursue higher education. The strong and committed ladies of this club have held true to their mission and stand as a beacon of light in this community. Your presence here today is a salute to their high level of programmatic excellence, consistency, and longevity. As the 2014 Northeast District Theme declares, the ladies of the North Jersey Unit Club are, “Simply the B.E.S.T. (Bold, Empowered, Sisters, Together)”. Empowered and boldly these sister are together making a true difference. Merolyn Tindal Kelly
2014 Professional Women of the Year
Merolyn began her professional career at Passaic County Community College where she was an academic advisor to urban “non-traditional” students and taught Psychology and Sociology as an adjunct professor. She later worked as a vocational counselor for the New Jersey Department of Education at a shared-time vocational school (COED) located in Newark, NJ. Twenty-five years ago, she continued her career with the East Orange Board of Education where she has served as a school counselor on the elementary and secondary levels, a Teacher on Special Assignment, a DropOut Prevention Officer and an Anti-Bullying Specialist. She received a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Seton Hall University, a Master of Science in Student Personnel Services from Upsala College and a Master of Arts in Educational Leadership from the New Jersey Expedited Certification in Educational Leadership Program (NJEXCEL). Merolyn is currently a school counselor at the Cicely L. Tyson Community School of Performing and Fine Arts in East Orange, New Jersey. She has been instrumental in fostering the academic and community components of the school by establishing partnerships with various organizations. These partnerships have enabled various students to receive advanced training at Julliard, the Dance Theater of Harlem, the Alvin Ailey Dance Troupe, the Metropolitan Museum, and the Pushkin Russian Program at the Madison Campus of the University of Wisconsin. With the assistance of Ms. Tyson, she has coordinated master classes for students with professional artists such as Judith Jamison, Wynton Marsalis, George Faison, Mtume and Kimberly Elise. As a member of St. Matthew AME Church in Orange, NJ, she has served as a Sunday School teacher, a Trustee, Director of Young People’s Department (YPD), Chairperson of the Commission on African American History and Culture and the Scholarship Committee. She continuously provides community service through her membership in Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Montclair Almunae Chapter were she is a mentor for high school girls in the Delta GEMS Program. She currently serves as president of The Friends of the East Orange Public Library whose primary role is to fundraise to support programs for youth of East Orange. Merolyn is the proud mother of Derek and Nicole, grandmother of eight and great-grandmother of one. She is looking forward to retiring in the near future to spend time traveling, bowling and enjoying her family.
Geraldine Méhu-Moore
Assistant Complex Director
Geraldine Méhu-Moore is an Assistant Complex Director at UBS Financial Services, where she is responsible for driving business, sales, asset growth, revenue and managing the development of Financial Advisors in one of the New York City’s top offices. She started her career at UBS nine years ago and has held a number of leadership roles. Prior to her current role, she served as Executive Director of Wealth Management Solutions, responsible for strategic initiatives and various products and services that addressed revenue growth, cross-organizational opportunities, and risk. She was also responsible for analyzing financial advisor recruits’ book of business for investment and product portability. She also served as Head of Product Strategy, leading a team responsible for positioning the Firm’s investment and product capabilities to financial advisors and managing the relationship for thirdparty asset management, insurance and annuity firms. With more than 18+ years of experience in the private and public sectors, Geraldine has served in a diverse set of leadership roles, including Director of UBS Private Wealth Management Desk; Director of UBS Piper Jaffrey Acquisition Integration; Associate Director at Barclays Capital; Deputy Press Secretary for former NJ Governor Christine Todd Whitman and Chief of Staff for the NJ Secretary of State, among others. Geraldine has received many industry accolades, including: • • • • • •

She is a member of the Executive Leadership Council (ELC) and the Council of Urban Professionals. Geraldine served on the board of the Financial Women’s Association for 6 years and as a trustee for 4 years at Marylawn High School - an all girls school in South Orange, Geraldine is a cum laude graduate of Seton Hall University; holds a certificate from Cornell University School of Industrial and Labor Relations; and the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Certificate from SIFMA, the Wharton School. She is a licensed life/health insurance agent, and holds Series 7, 9, 10 and 66 securities licenses. She is fluent in French, a member of Delta Sigma Theta and resides with her husband and daughter in South Orange.
Ernestine R. Galloway, Ed.D Dr. Ernestine R. Galloway, the daughter of Seymour and Ethel Galloway was born in Newark, New Jersey. Her earliest academic years and church activities were spent in that city. For approximately 35-years Dr. Galloway worked in various professional and support positions during the day and pursued degree courses at night. Her work in higher education resulted in her receiving a BA in Religious Education; a MA in Religious Education and Psychology at a joint program in NYU and Biblical Seminary (aka: New York Theological Seminary); a MA in Anthropology and Sociology and Anthropology and a Doctorate in Education. To qualify for the doctorate Dr. Galloway completed her Religious-Education Anthropological fieldwork in the St. Elizabeth Parish BWI in Accompong, Jamaica. Her doctoral dissertation is entitled, “The Religious Beliefs and Practices of Maroon Children of Jamaica.” Professionally Dr. Galloway has served as Director of Education for the Concord Baptist Church in Brooklyn, New York; Associate Director of the Student YWCA; Unit Manager of the Church and Community Division of National Ministries, American Baptist Churches, USA, in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania; Director of Volunteers for the American Bible Society; Director of Agency Relations for the Community FoodBank of New Jersey and Coordinator of Volunteers for the Jewish Vocational Service in East Orange, NJ. Also she was one of the organizers of the Newark Preschool Council (Head Start) in Newark, NJ. Recently Dr. Galloway has served as the Education Associate at the Riverside Church of the City of New York. As an Adjunct Professor, Dr. Galloway has taught courses at New York Theological Seminary; Newark School of Theology in Newark, NJ; in the Anthropology Department at Upsala College in East Orange, NJ and was a Professor of Black Studies and Psychology at Seton Hall University in South Orange, New Jersey. As a member of the Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Newark, New Jersey, she served for a number of years as a church schoolteacher, superintendent of the Sunday school, president of the BTU, member of the usher board and member and soloist of the Senior Choir. While a member of the First Baptist Church of Montclair, New Jersey Dr. Galloway served as the church’s treasurer and its moderator. Dr. Galloway has conducted classes for the General Baptist Convention of NJ; the New England Baptist Convention; the Baptist Educational Center of New York and the Empire State Convention. In 1976 she was elected statewide president of the American Baptist Churches of New Jersey. Prior to accepting the position as a Unit Manager with National Ministries, American Baptist Churches, USA ABC, Dr. Galloway represented the ABC on the Communications Committee of the Baptist World Alliance, on the General Board of the National Council of Churches, the ABC’s Ministers and Missionaries Benefit Board and the General Board of ABC, USA. Dr. Galloway has appeared on television. She was a regular panelist on WPIX on a television program for the New York Protestant Council. Also she wrote and co-produced the “4th R,” a children’s televised Sunday school program on NBC-TV in New York City and a similar program on ABC-TV in Los Angeles, California. Dr. Galloway has studied piano, voice and organ. At the present time she performs for senior citizen groups and in nursing homes. She also conducts yearly spiritual renewal retreats.
Debi Hall Dean Born on May 28, 1956, Debi Hall-Dean was the last of six children born to the late Rev. Johnnie M. and Vestella Hall. She is a native of Newark, NJ, where she attended the Public School System. In the two decades immediately following her graduation from Vailsburg High School in 1973, Debi entered the workforce of Corporate America. At New Jersey Bell, UMDNJ and Local 108, RWDSU, she would quickly climb the proverbial “ladder of success”. While Debi excelled in the workplace, there was always the feeling that this was not her PURPOSE in life. In 1994, Debi was diagnosed with a chronic illness that would change the trajectory of her life for the good. While waiting to be approved for disability benefits, she began to explore a variety of home-based “businesses”, simply to survive. As a result, she became proficient in graphic arts, desk-top publishing, and catering, certified in event planning, and developed an innate knack for community organizing and advocacy. Unbeknownst to her at the time, all these things would come to serve her well as she set out to fulfill her real life purpose and passion...Community Service. A self-proclaimed advocate for the community at-large and a faithful member of Franklin-St. John’s United Methodist Church, Debi has been the recipient of numerous awards and citations for her work in the Church and Community. From leading her Block Association in the replacement of destructive trees and sidewalks; serving as a consultant for the City of Newark Safe Summer initiative; holding multiple offices and chairing Church-based activities; to the development and building of the Church Outreach Committee to a full-fledged non-profit CBO called Partners in A.C.T.S. . Debi is always ready to give her all to a cause that will enhance the quality of life for others. Most recently, she is serving as co-founder and servant-leader of the Grassroots Emergency Overnight Warming Stations. This all volunteer group of residents was organized to provide overnight shelter for those that she calls her “Neighbors Without An Address” during extreme weather….a service that the City failed to offer. Debi credits her success with these and other initiatives to her “village” of like-minded individuals, people with genuine hearts of love compassion for our fellow man. She believes that we are our Brothers and Sisters keepers. Debi has always known and proclaimed that her priorities in life are God, Family and Community…. in that order. In addition to her siblings and a multitude of other relatives, she is the proud mother of Tara V. Brown (and Tara’s husband, Darryle) and her “Pride & Joy,” her three grandchildren, Xavier, Kelli & Kennedi. Her mantra and favorite scripture is found in Luke 12:48, “From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked”. She says, “God has entrusted me with unique gifts….not to keep to myself, but to USE for His glory. As much as I have been blessed throughout my life, how could I NOT pay it forward and work each day to be a blessing to others? Service is not an option, it’s an obligation…..and it’s my PURPOSE!”
Natasha Scott Natasha Scott is a 2011 magna cum laude graduate of the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in communications and cinema studies. She is also a graduate of Kent Place School, in Summit, New Jersey, a small all‐girls college preparatory high school. Natasha was extremely involved in her high school’s community. By her senior year, she served as an officer on the Black Cultural Association, the captain of Pep Squad, the Entertainment Editor for the school newspaper, and a class representative for the Community Service Committee. She even enrolled in SAT prep courses from her freshman year and started touring colleges from her sophomore year. As a result of her commitment to working the college admission process to her best advantage and as early as possible, Natasha was considered a well‐rounded candidate for many of the nation’s top universities. She accepted early admission to the University of Pennsylvania and was able to enjoy her senior year of high school stress free. Wanting to impart her valuable “how‐to‐get‐into‐college” knowledge to others, Natasha has worked for years with inner‐city teens through Dorson Community Foundation, a nonprofit organization in East Orange, New Jersey dedicated to providing enrichment programs for inner‐city youth. Through the Foundation’s SAT prep course, Natasha served as a college prep consultant and mentored high school students through the college admissions process. Her work at Dorson Community Foundation is what influenced her to write The College Admissions Bible— an easy-to-read, yet comprehensive guidebook that finally simplifies the overwhelming college admissions and shows students and parents precisely what is needed to get into the university of your dreams. Since its publication in March 2013, The College Admissions Bible has been purchased by Paterson Public School District, East Orange School District, and Orange High School. Natasha has also served as the guest speaker at various college prep nights and Parent Association meetings at local high schools and libraries throughout Northern New Jersey. She was even featured in Dream Teen Magazine and on the front page of Local Talk Newspaper. Natasha also blogs about college admissions on her website www.CollegeAdmissionBible.com and posts video how-to’s on The College Admissions Bible YouTube channel with the goal of guiding as many students as possible through the daunting college admissions experience. A true young entrepreneur, Natasha also runs World of Tashii Jewelry (www.worldoftashii.etsy.com), an online handmade jewelry shop established in 2011, which ships her handmade designs to customers all over the world and can even be found in retail stores across Australia. When she’s not making jewelry or talking college admissions, Natasha currently spends her 9-5 working as a Program Associate for A Better Chance, the nation’s oldest educational access non-profit missioned to recruit and place high-achieving children of color into independent day schools and boarding schools around the country.

Special Honors to my wife, Lady Madelin L. Dargan for always modeling for a wonderful example of a professional and loving woman who has it all. Lady Madelin Dargan is the daughter of a loving and supportive mother, the late Zenobia Danner and Biochemist and Tanzanian political activist, Ernest Danner. Born in Nashville, Tennessee, Lady Madelin spent her early years in Tanzania, Africa, and later the family moved to Montclair, New Jersey where she attended the Montclair, New Jersey School system. Lady Madelin is a woman of many gifts. Professionally trained as a dancer from the age of 9 until 17, Lady was selected and performed as a Principal Dancer with the Alfred Gallman Newark Dance Theater, and performed with the Garden State Ballet, and the renowned Alvin Ailey Dance Theater School. She attended Penn State University achieved high honors and graduated with honor and distinction from Rutgers’ University with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics. Lady Madelin has been employed in Sales & Marketing specializing in production, color, and printing technology for nearly two decade and has been a “President’s Club” recipient several times ranking as high as number two in the country in her field. Lady Madelin has implemented her strong creative energy into launching her own desktop publishing company, MLD Communications with no prior work experience or background in the field. The business was blessedly successful and sovereign within a few months. MLD Communications has been the publisher of choice for many religious, social and civic organizations over the company’s 25 plus years. First Lady gives all glory to her LORD and SAVIOR Jesus Christ for the anointing and favor He has blessed her with in her business savvy. With her winning attitude, determined spirit, and bright smile, she brings her unique perspective and skill to whatever she approaches. Lady Madelin’s calling is the gift of Helps (1 Corinthians 12: 28). She is a faithful and dedicated missionary and a mission-minded person. She uses her personal, professional and spiritual skills to aid the lives of the people in her sphere of influence wherever GOD sends her. Lady Madelin has been married to Reverend J-Anthony Dargan for over 25 years. She is the mother of two wonderful and magnificent children: James Anthony and Christine JannieLorraine who is the apple of her eye. First Lady Madelin has worked in various ministries in her Church experience and now as the First Lady of the Congregational Church of GOD, Harlem, New York. First Lady Madelin Dargan considers it a privilege and honor to serve God and her church in this capacity.
