It doesn’t seem like 10 years ago that Michael “Mac” McCarthy made the move from another local brokerage to start his own venture, Gaslight Group Properties, but it has been just that long! A year later Danielle Smith and Pete Platte joined Mac at GGP. Mac has mentored many agents starting with his now partners, Pete and Danielle, and he continues to do so today. It was a different market back then. The economy was working its way out of a tough foreclosure market, listings were prevalent, and buyers were fewer and farther between than they are today. Knowledge of the local market and being a part of the community is something that has been important since the inception of GGP and that still holds true to this day. Mac may have been born in Detroit, but has called Northern Michigan home since 1978. Danielle relocated to the area from Southern Michigan 14 years ago and has been laying down roots ever since. As a young girl, I spent my summers at my Grandparent’s summer home on Walloon Lake. We would arrive Memorial Day and stay until Labor Day. That precious time formulated my childhood memories, and I will never forget them. Those years were the beginning of my NoMi life. Little did I know then that I would marry my Walloon Lake childhood sweetheart and make my life and raise my children here in the most beautiful part of the state. A favorite memory was when I learned to waterski with tennis shoes on because my feet were too little for the Cypress Garden skis. My Dad pulled me behind a small fishing boat with a 25HP Johnson motor. After that, I was off and running and skied most days. As young teens, we all had summer jobs, but spent late afternoons skiing and flirting with the boys! I have been blessed with a family that has remained close knit and we spend a lot of time together. Throughout all the ups and downs of life, we connect and refresh at our lake home on a regular basis. All our children were raised

there and had the experience of summers on Walloon, something they all truly appreciate so much. I often think that this is what has made us the people we are. Appreciating life and one another has driven us all to work hard and remember the important things in life. We have a plaque on our hearth that says, “I come here often to find myself, it is so easy to get lost in this world.” Isn’t that the truth?

What’s not to love about Petoskey? For me, it was the simplicity of living that still suits us today that drew me in. You see, we packed up 20 years ago leaving Oregon for Michigan’s northern lower peninsula with one thing in mind: “live where you love to be truly happy!”

“You don’t know what you’ve got ‘til it’s gone...” For me, Northern Michigan has always been home. Like many homegrown adolescents, it took moving away for me to truly realize how special this place is. I treasure seeing new things and new places; always up for an adventure to explore and seek out that connection to land and history (yes, I’m in the Hemingway fan club). I feel fortunate that I live in a community that values these natural spaces and actively works to protect and conserve land for future generations. Local non-profit, Little Traverse Conservancy, has thousands of acres of protected land and hundreds of miles of hiking trails throughout

Northern Michigan. It’s something that I have come to appreciate more than I ever thought I would and is part of my family’s weekly routine. Knowing that my daughter can grow up exploring these lands and they will remain unchanged in perpetuity is special and powerful. I would encourage you to get outside. Explore somewhere you’ve never been. Northern Michigan’s outdoor recreation is unmatched, and your next adventure is just around the corner.


Often when we travel out into the world, away from home we bask in the wonder of what’s out there. We tend to think the grass is always greener. When I was young, I traveled often. I was always packing my car heading in any direction thinking I could find something better than Northern Michigan. Every time my dad would say, “You’ll be back. This is God’s country.” I have found that Northern Michigan offers not only the security of a loving community, but also all of Mother Nature’s elements and seasons in one area. Northern Michigan offers the opportunity to grow and change every season. It has been a platform in which to grow and to raise my four children Emma, Ava, Brody, and Porter (and Finn, our pup). We spend our time embracing all of the nature in our area. My absolute favorite season is Harvest Season or Indian Summer. Late summer, early fall when the buzz of summer has quieted, the kids are back in school, the mornings are brisk enough for a sweatshirt on your way to the local coffee shop, the afternoons are often filled with an abundance of warmth, friends, community, and local eats from all of our wonderful farms. I can pick the kids up from school and head to the beach for a dip. The lake is still warm and comforting. With the sun setting over the lake, we enjoy dinner as a family. We are home in time to rinse off the sandy feet and crawl into bed only to do it again tomorrow.

When fall comes, the leaves turn knowing that Mother Nature is preparing to rest. The smells turn to chicken soup in the crockpot and simmering apples on the stove. The air gets a bite and we can put an extra layer on. When the first snow comes, my kids are out the door. They are so excited to embrace the beautiful stillness of winter. It’s a time for outdoor adventure, quiet reflection, and planning for the months ahead. In the spring, we, along with Mother Nature, emerge from the cold winter and the air feels so hopeful and fresh. The trees start budding and the windows open up. The entire community seems to have a smile on its face. It’s a time to plant the seeds and tend to the flowers. I think all Northern Michiganders can say that we play hard in the summer. The days are long, the air is beautiful, the lakes are incredible, and we take advantage of every moment. The lake is always there to offer a “reset” to the day. And then back again to Harvest Season. Full circle. So, my dad was right. In God’s country and Mother Nature at her finest, I have found my home and my children’s home. I have had the opportunity to put down roots and find balance in the ever-changing natural elements of NoMi. I am forever grateful to be growing and raising my family here.

It’s hard to beat the lifestyle that Northern Michigan affords those of us who call it our home, those that live here part-time, or who frequently visit this area. Although we are remote, we have all the activities that a small city has and more. Most people choose to live here because of the vast amount of outdoor activities, but we also have fine dining, as well as the fine arts. Peaceful living abounds and the schools are top notch. Although I was raised in the city, I chose to raise my family in the Harbor Springs/Petoskey area. We made our way up here like most people, spending time at our second home skiing, golfing, and being together as a family. It did not take long to make the choice to buy a home and live here full-time. Now that my children are grown and have moved on, they definitely appreciate the unique opportunity they had to be raised in a small, yet sophisticated town. I have enjoyed skiing and snowshoeing during the winter seasons and we actually used to “cheer” when the first snow arrived - the earlier the better; however, now I prefer the summer season. Living so close to Lake Michigan

provides beautiful views, perfect sunsets, and a place to cool off if it gets too warm. The turquoise waters remind me of the Caribbean in the summer, and I enjoy walking the bike path along the Little Traverse Bay shoreline in Petoskey. I also love to travel and I count the Harbor Springs/Petoskey area as one of the most beautiful places in the country. We are truly fortunate to spend time here.


“Life has no limitations, except the ones you make.” —Les Brown Summers in college - those were the days. Back then, I moved to Petoskey every summer the day classes ended to work random summer jobs, meet new people, and enjoy life. I felt a connection to Northern Michigan immediately and always dreamed of living here full-time. Life took me in other directions, but after 20 years of working in the banking industry in Southern Michigan, my family decided it was time to make the move “up north” in 2019. It was time to start the next adventure in our lives. My husband, Clay, and I met in college 23 years ago and we have a 16-year-old daughter, Corrin. We also have an 8-year-old rescue dog named Yazmin and she’s loving life in her new home! The change we’ve seen in all of us since moving here has been wonderful and we are a much more relaxed family. Our daughter goes rock hunting whenever she can, spends summers

at the beach, and has especially enjoyed the theater program at Petoskey High School. I grew up spending summers at our family cabin in Central Lake and am so happy to have it closer to us now, so I can go whenever I need a cabin break. It’s my happy place when my soul needs a little healing or I need a reset - no TV, no WiFi, just the water and nature. My family has decided that at this point in our lives, we just want to enjoy life, the beauty and relaxing atmosphere of Northern Michigan, our friends and family, and our jobs. We want to take spontaneous road trips to so many beautiful places within an hour of us. We want to watch the sunset at the waterfront to end the day and walk our dog on the many trails in the area! Living in Northern Michigan is a lifestyle change and I would highly recommend it to anyone ready for a positive change in their lives. Les Brown, an inspiration of mine, once said, “life has no limitations except the ones you make.”
