Dear friends, Another six months have quickly passed since our last newsletter and Course III is moving ahead on many fronts. Foremost is the very good news that we were highly successful in hiring three new faculty members: Assistant Professors Alfredo Alexander-Katz, Geoffrey Beach, and Michael Demkowicz—you can read more about their backgrounds and research interests in the next pages, but suffice to say, DMSE is very pleased and excited to have these outstanding new additions to our department. There are a host of other good news items for Course III (despite the recent difficulties in the financial markets). We now have an active MIT DMSE Alumni Club (the first such departmental alumni club in all of MIT). The department’s “design/build a working prototype competition,” MADMEC II, was highly successful again with a team of graduate students (“Heliotrope”) taking the $10,000 first-place prize for their prototype sun-tracking device for PVs. The LAM (Laboratory for Advanced Materials) planning is proceeding apace—the highly reputable architectural and design firm, Imai Keller Moore (IKM), has been selected and we are currently about to choose the construction firm, with plans to complete the project by late fall 2009 (see inside article and artist’s sketch of the LAM entrance). As of this past September, the “Reg Day” barbecue is back, complete with liquid nitrogen made ice cream. The students, faculty, and alums continue to win honors and distinctions. One of our undergrads, Richard Lin ’09, has been honored with the distinction of selection as a Marshall Fellow, the first Course III student so recognized since Terry Totmeier, ’91. Please read the great article on the Glass Lab. It is under the Infinite Corridor and is certainly a hot place to be!
