Dear friends, There have been many changes in DMSE since our last newsletter. Along with promotions, new hires, departures, and renovations, there’s a new Department Head.

I took over the position from Subra Suresh in January, 2006. Previously I was Director of the Institute for Soldier Nanotechnologies (ISN) which I co-founded with Prof.

Tim Swager (currently Head of Chemistry) in 2002.

Running a department, I’m finding, is a lot more of a challenge than directing a center! I enjoy the enthusiasm of our great undergraduates, graduates, and especially our young faculty! One of my very first duties as Head was to (successfully!) present tenure cases, which gave me a wonderful opportunity to tell the MIT administration about the great teaching and research our young faculty are doing. Two of these junior faculty, Associate Professor Yoel Fink, Ph.D. ’00, and Assistant Professor Francesco Stellacci, were recognized with teaching awards.

Dr. Silvija Gradecˇak was recruited from a strong field of applicants and joined DMSE last September. Sadly, in the past year, three valued colleagues have left the Department: Adam Powell, ’92, Ph.D. ’96, has left for a position in industry, Stephanie Reich has taken a faculty position in her native Germany, and Anne Mayes, ’86, took medical retirement and moved back home to Mustang, Oklahoma. We are recognizing Anne for her years of dedicated service to DMSE and MIT by raising monies for a graduate fellowship in her honor.

DMSE is not only blessed by super faculty and students, but fantastic staff. Several new faces have been recently added: Angelita Mirales has most ably taken over the helm of Course III’s Office of Student Services. Angelita, a graduate of MIT’s Course VIIA, has a new son, Sophocles, purported to be MIT class of 2027. Amy Shea is our staff person for undergrad students. Mike Tarkanian, ’00, S.M. ’03, joined DMSE as a Technical Instructor and is busy renewing the forge and machine shop areas. Currently Mike is spearheading a new student competition, “Materials Solutions for Alternative Energy” sponsored by DOW Chemical.

The ranking of the Department’s academic programs among all materials departments in the USA continues to be the “best of the best,” as recognized by the press and our peers. Another evaluation occurs every two years during the Meeting of the Corporation Visiting Committee; the committee of nineteen members is currently chaired by Desh Deshpande. I am pleased to report that this distinguished group from academia and industry gave the department a stellar rating, all the while pointing out the continued challenges to remain at the very top level world-wide. They noted our impressive annual graduation rate of approximately 40 bachelors of science, 25 Masters (M.Eng. and S.M.), and 30 doctoral degrees, our research volume of just below $28M/year (more than doubled over the past ten years), and our all-time high number of students, post docs, and visitors. Of course, all this activity, both of people and research, is severely squeezing our infrastructure, and one of my priorities as Department Head is to work with the faculty and MIT’s administration to better utilize and modernize our space and facilities.

The first class to complete the new unified undergraduate curriculum graduated in June, 2006, with mostly very positive views on their experiences. Several noteworthy research initiatives are underway in materials for energy,

electronics, biotechnology, and optical communications.

Course III faculty and students are playing a large and leading role in the MIT Energy Initiative. A current Ph.D. student, David Danielson, heads the MIT Energy Club which involves quite a number of Course III students, undergraduates and graduate.

An ongoing renovation project will conclude this summer; as mentioned in previous newsletters, DMSE and the Physics Department have “swapped” space in Buildings 6 and 8. As part of the project, a new Green Building for Physics has been erected in the courtyard of Buildings 6, 8, and 4. During the construction, the “old building” has been given a new lease on life with updated plumbing, heating, ventilation, and electrical and communications systems. Prior to beginning the project, the architects and engineers were amazed that cuttingedge research was performed in laboratories supported by generators like those in the Smithsonian’s exhibitions on electrical development!

I invite you to visit us in our new Headquarters (provided you come after July or so) in room 6-113. On June 8, you are invited to our annual luncheon for alumni, graduates and their families, and students, faculty, staff, and friends to be held on the lawn outside Building 35 immediately following Commencement. Around DMSE N E W F A C U L T Y Silvija Gradecˇak joined DMSE in Sept. 2006 as the C. Flemings Merton Assistant Professor of Materials Science and Engineering. Her research focuses on nano-photonics and electronics and is based on the synthesis, characterization and integration of low-dimensional systems. By taking advanSilvija Gradecˇak tage of unique material properties on the nanoscale, she explores novel optoelectronic applications such as nanoscale light-emitting sources, single photon sources, or nanowire lasers.

Understanding the properties of such nanosystems requires multidisciplinary approach and new instrumental tools. Prof. Gradecˇak uses rational synthesis of freestanding nanoscale objects like nanocrystals, nanotubes, and nanowires and combines spectroscopic techniques, transport measurements, and advanced electron microscopy techniques to directly correlate structural and physical properties on the nanometer scale. Experimental techniques and methodologies that are being developed as a part of her research endeavor are generally applicable to any material system where interplay between nanostructure, properties, and performance becomes significant. She is developing a new graduate course, “Imaging of Materials,” that will bolster our traditional strength in microscopy.

R E C E N T A P P O I N T M E N T S Darrell J. Irvine, Ph.D. ’00, was named Eugene Bell Career Development Associate Professor of Tissue Engineering.

Prof. Lorna J. Gibson became Associate Provost effective August 1, joining the large number of DMSE faculty who have assumed senior leadership positions in the Institute. Professor Gibson served as Chair of the Faculty from 2005 to 2006.

On Feb. 1, Prof. Klavs Jensen became head of the Department of Chemical Engineering. Jensen, the Lammot DuPont Professor of Chemical Engineering who holds a joint appointment in DMSE, “is a noted chemical engineering researcher and educator,” said Thomas Magnanti, Dean of Engineering, in announcing the appointment. “He has made important contributions to a wide variety of arenas, including microfabrication, testing and integration of microfluidics in the context of chemical and biological discovery, synthesis and processing ... He is well known, for example, for his pioneering research on ‘chemical processes on a chip.’ He has also investigated and taught broadly in areas such as materials synthesis and processing, multiscale simulation of reactive processes, chemical kinetics, and transport processes.”

Jensen’s long list of honors includes membership in the National Academy of Engineering; appointment as a fellow of the Royal Society on Chemistry (London); an honorary doctorate from the Danish Technical University; a Guggenheim Fellowship; and the distinguished Colborn Award from the American Institute of Chemical Engineers.

F A R E W E L L S In July, Prof. Adam C. Powell IV, ’92, Ph.D. ’96, left MIT for a position at Veryst Engineering in Needham, MA. Professor Powell has been a valued member of this department, as an advisor to undergraduates and graduate students and an instructor in materials processing.

Assistant Professor Stephanie Reich has left MIT for a senior tenured full professor position at the Freie University of Berlin in her native Germany.

Prof. Ainissa Ramirez spent Fall 2006 in DMSE as the Martin Luther King Visiting Professor. Prof. Ramirez is a professor of engineering at Yale University working on

research in thin-film materials science. In 2003, Technology Review named her as one of the TR100 for her discovery of a universal solder that can bond metals to ceramics, glass, diamonds, and notably the oxide materials used in semiconductor fabrication. This solder is the first to provide high-strength bonds between any inorganic materials, and will impact the electronics, optoelectronics, and microelectromechanical industries.

During her time at MIT, Prof. Ramirez presented a seminar, “The Crystallization of NiTi Shape Memory Thin Films,” as part of the CMSE/DMSE Seminar Series. She hopes to continue her research collaborations on nanoindentation, MEMS, and Smart Solders.

Robin Elices has accepted the position of Executive Director for the MIT Energy Initiative effective May 21.

This is a great new opportunity for Robin and we wish her well. Robin will be hard to replace; she has provided eight years of dedicated service as Director of the Administrative Services Organization (ASO).

Kathleen Farrell, DMSE’s Academic Administrator, left her position at MIT last summer, to devote her efforts full-time to raising her baby, Sean. Ms. Farrell joined DMSE Headquarters in 1989 and was an essential part of the Department, working in a variety of roles, before becoming Academic Administrator in 2000.

R E C O G N I T I O N In 2006 and 2007, a number of our staff members received School of Engineering (SoE) Infinite Mile Awards for Excellence as “individuals whose work is of the highest quality. They stand out because of their high level of commitment, and because of the enormous energy and enthusiasm they bring to their work. They are renowned for their dedication and caring, do their jobs extremely well, and make it easier for others to do likewise.”

George LaBonte and Juliette Braun are 2007 recipients of SoE Infinite Mile Awards for Excellence. The awards will be presented at the SoE awards ceremony on May 10 at 3 p.m. in the Grier Room 34-401.

George LaBonte has worked as a Research Specialist in Prof. Subra Suresh’s laboratory since 1993. He receives this award in recognition of his many years of committed service, and the sustained excellence he brings to the work environment.

Juliette Braun works in DMSE Headquarters as Administrative Assistant to the Department Head, Prof.

Ned Thomas. Juliette previously worked as the Administrative Assistant to Prof. Sam Allen when he was DMSE Executive Officer. Since moving into her current role, Juliette has risen to the great challenge of supporting the Department Head. She is well known to all in the Department, and it is easy to see why Juliette is a recipient of this award, as she embodies all of the qualities described above.

In 2006, Aza Gevorkian and Gerald Hughes received SoE Infinite Mile Awards for Excellence. Gerald Hughes began working at MIT in 1988, first as an HVAC mechanic, and later as a zone supervisor for repair and maintenance in MIT’s Department of Facilities. He joined DMSE as Facilities Manager in 2001, and we are very fortunate to have him in this position. Gerry has been invaluable over the past six years of renovations, faculty renewal, and associated space change projects.

Aza joined ASO in December 2004 as a Human Resources Representative. She came to us from Harvard Business School, and had previous experience in Human Resources at the University of California, Los Angeles.

One of Aza’s most important responsibilities is the completion of visa paperwork for all international visitors and appointments, and she provides a gracious and welcoming atmosphere to all of those joining the Department.

Amanda Tat, Senior Fiscal Officer, received a 2006 Infinite Mile Award through the Office of the Vice President for Research and Associate Provost for her work in support of the Center for Biomedical Engineering (CBE). As Fiscal Officer, Amanda has responsibility for managing pre- and post-award grant and contract activities for all sponsored programs for CBE, ChemE, and DMSE. Amanda previously worked in the Center for Materials Science and Engineering (CMSE) as a Facilities Administrator, in the Laboratory for Nuclear Science as a Financial Administrator, in the Department of Chemistry as a Fiscal Officer, and in the Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) as a Contract Administrator.

L. Gabrielle Joseph, Administrative Assistant; Robert C. O’Handley, Senior Research Associate; and Charlotte L. Peed, formerly of ASO, all joined the Quarter Century Club in 2006.

O U T R E A C H Mongolian International University (MIU) Taeyi Choi, a Course III graduate student, spent two weeks last summer at MIU in Ulanbataar, the capital of Mongolia, with a group from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST). Ms. Choi, a KAIST alumna, traveled with fifteen KAIST students and taught calculus for three hours a day. She enjoyed the teaching and was excited to work with students whose enthusiasm for studying was visibly growing.

Founded in 2002, MIU graduated its first class in June.

The three-year old KAIST-MIU connection was established by an MIU professor who is a KAIST graduate.

Course III Goes to Washington A student-led Science Policy Initiative is aiming to improve the dialogue between scientists and engineers and public policy makers. The Initiative’s goals are providing a background on science and innovation infrastructure, and proactive training in Congressional advocacy activities.

Declines in basic research funding in the physical sciences led President Hockfield’s administration to urge the involvement of young scientists in science policy making.

In addition, recent energy initiatives on campus have spurred interest in how technology interacts with public policy decision-making. At an event last spring, DMSE graduate student Alicia Jackson spoke with MIT President Susan Hockfield about the need for young scientists to be involved in science policy at a national level.

This conversation ultimately led to the first MIT Science Policy Bootcamp, an intensive five-day seminar for 25 MIT graduate students taught by MIT Washington Office Director Bill Bonvillian with participation from more than a dozen MIT faculty who have performed government service.

The Bootcamp introduces science and engineering graduate students to many science policy topics, such as the organizational framework between US science agencies, the DARPA model, the drivers behind science and technology innovation systems theory, and upcoming challenges to the life-science innovation system.

With support from DMSE and the Public Service Center, Asher Sinensky, Anna Bershteyn, Christopher Bettinger, Catherine Tweedie, Megan Brewster, and Albert Swiston, all DMSE graduate students, traveled to Washington in March to attend a Congressional Visits Day (CVD) sponsored by the Materials Advantage program, a joint student program between ASM, TMS, and ACerS, and dedicated to materials science and engineering. During the annual CVD, scientists and engineers convene on Capitol Hill to discuss policy issues and participate in the legislative process. The CVD goal is to convey to elected officials the importance of science and technology funding to U.S. economic and competitive well-being.

“Students are the most persuasive example of how federal science investment benefits the country—our education, our research, and our future careers are all facilitated by federal organizations such as NSF, DARPA, and NIH. CVD educates and empowers students to participate in the legislative process,” said Mr. Swiston, who has organized MIT’s participation in CVD for the past two years. He adds that CVD directly complements the Bootcamp in the prototypical MIT “from learning to practice” model.

Academic Program U N D E R G R A D U A T E C U R R I C U L U M U P D A T E In 2006, the first graduates of the “new” Course III curriculum completed their Bachelors of Science. The Course III S.B. combines traditional lecture subjects with laboratories held in an Undergraduate Teaching Laboratory on the Infinite Corridor (opened in 2003) and in other DMSE facilities that together provide a comprehensive set of experimental equipment to support the curriculum.

A unified set of core subjects cover the essentials of MS&E, and electives explore aspects of MS&E in depth.

Students in the fall semester of the sophomore year take 3.012, Fundamentals of Materials Science and Engineering, and 3.014, Materials Laboratory, which are scheduled together so that lab experiments in 3.014 complement the lectures in 3.012. These subjects cover thermodynamics of materials, structure, and bonding, and present both the fundamental science and the applications to materials and devices. In the spring, sophomores take 3.022, Microstructural Evolution in Materials, and 3.024, Electrical, Optical, and Magnetic Properties of Materials. In the junior year there are four core subjects: 3.032, Mechanical Properties of Materials; 3.034, Organic and Biomaterials Chemistry; 3.044, Materials Processing; and 3.042, Materials Project Laboratory.

Most of these subjects contain integrated lab work.

Students also take a mathematics subject; either Differential Equations or a new subject developed by the Department, 3.016, Mathematical Methods for Materials Scientists and Engineers, and a computation subject. Restricted electives include electronic materials, bio- and polymeric materials, and structural and environmental materials. The capstone activity is an individual senior thesis project, or an industrial internship carried out over two summers.

G R A D U A T E C U R R I C U L U M U P D A T E Our graduate program continues to lead the field as US News and World Report named it the top materials program in the country once again.

Faculty Honors With his co-authors, Sam Allen, S.M. ’71, Ph.D. ’75, was recognized with the TMS Champion H. Mathewson Award for the best paper in Metallurgical Transactions in 2005. The paper, “Homogeneous Steel Infiltration,” was authored by B.D. Kernan, E.M. Sachs, S.M. Allen, C. Sachs, L. Raffenbeul, A. Pettavino, and A. Lorenz.

Angela Belcher was named Research Leader of the Year

by Scientific American and a member of the “Scientific American 50,” the annual list of individuals, teams, companies, and other organizations that demonstrate outstanding technological leadership.

Prof. Belcher also was appointed to the MIT Energy Council, which oversees the implementation of the Institute-wide MIT Energy Initiative (MITEI).

At the World Economic Forum annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland, MIT sponsored a dinner discussion of energy technologies. Prof. Belcher attended, along with Prof.

Vladimir Bulovic of EECS, Prof. Greg Stephanopoulos of ChemE, and President Hockfield. Time magazine’s correspondent called it a “guided tour of the future.”

Yoel Fink, Ph.D. ’00, was named a MacVicar Fellow in March 2007. This is the highest recognition MIT makes of excellence in teaching. Prof. Fink also received the Joseph Lane Excellence in Teaching Award in 2006. This award recognizes “the development of imaginative new courses, improvement of current curricula, research efforts which enhance teaching excellence, and demonstrated effectiveness in the classroom.”

Merton C. Flemings, ’51, S.M. ’52, Sc.D. ’54, the Toyota Professor of Materials Processing, Emeritus, is one of nine 2007 Franklin Institute Laureates. Winners are honored “for their significant discoveries and achievements, which directly impact our daily lives or contribute to our present and future well-being.” Flemings, director of the Lemelson-MIT Program, will receive the Benjamin Franklin Medal in Materials Engineering “for contributions to understanding aspects of solidification of metallic alloys [and] the development of [the] semi-solid metalworking industry, which helps make sporting equipment, house-hold appliances and cars strong and light.”

Nicola Mazari was Professeur Invitee of the Institut

Universitaire de France in 2006. Each year, approximately ten honorees are invited to present their research in lecture series at several key institutions. Prof. Marzari was based at the Paris VI “Pierre et Marie Curie,” and lectured there and at the École Polytechnique.

Anne M. Mayes, ’86, received the Carl S. Marvel Creative Polymer Chemistry Award at the Spring Meeting of the Polymer Chemistry Division of the American Chemical Society (ACS). The award recognizes and encourages accomplishments and innovation in the field of basic or applied polymer science by younger scientists. Her acceptance address is printed below. .

Francesco Stellacci received the DuPont Young Professor Award, the 3M Non-Tenured Faculty Award, and the 3M Innovation Award.

At a DMSE faculty meeting in Fall 2006, Assoc. Dean of Engineering Dick Yue presented Prof. Stellacci with the Junior Bose Award for Excellence in Teaching. Prof.

Stellacci was recognized for his active role in developing innovative classroom experiences for MIT students. He was instrumental in developing: 3.014, Materials Laboratory; 3.012, Fundamentals of Materials Science and Engineering; and 3.153, Nanoscale Materials. Dean Yue noted that Prof. Stellacci “seeks to utilize laboratory experiments to bring to life the concepts explored in lectures. His enthusiasm for the field is evident in his teaching style and his ability to connect with his students—to motivate and inspire them to excellence.”

The National University of Singapore (NUS) named Subra Suresh, Sc.D. ’81 Course II, one of two Centennial Professors, the university’s most prestigious professorships. Prof. Suresh was awarded the Tan Chin Tuan Centennial Professorship “for his pioneering contributions in materials science and engineering, mechanical engineering and biological engineering.”

At the Fall MRS Meeting in Boston, Prof. Suresh received the Acta Materialia Gold Medal. Prof. Suresh was also elected an Honorary Member of the Spanish Royal Academy of Sciences. The Madridbased Academy covers the broad fields of physical, chemical, biological, and mathematical sciences. Prof.

Suresh received an Honorary Doctorate from Sweden’s Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Ned Thomas, grad students Taras Gorishnyy and Chaitanya Ullal, and post-doctoral researcher Martin Maldovan, S.M. ’01, Ph.D. ’04, received the Acoustical Society of America’s 2005 Science Writing Award for Professionals in Acoustics for their article “Sound Ideas,” published in the December 2005 edition of Physics World.

Harry Tuller was elected to the World Academy of Ceramics (WAC), a center for “promoting progress in the field of ceramics and fostering a better understanding of the social impact and cultural interactions of ceramics science, technology, history, and art.” Prof. Tuller also was selected to present the 2007 Edward Orton, Jr., Memorial Lecture of the American Ceramic Society.

Krystyn Van Vliet, Ph.D. ’04, received a Beckman Young Investigator (BYI) Award. The Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation makes grants to non-profit research institutions to promote research in chemistry and the life sciences and particularly to foster the invention of methods, instruments, and materials that will open up new avenues of research in science. The BYI provides research support to the most promising young faculty members in the early stages of academic careers in the chemical and life sciences. Prof. Van Vliet also received a 3M Innovation Award for her research on nanomechanics of polymeric structures.

The GMC presented the Outstanding Advisor Award to Prof. Van Vliet and the Outstanding Graduate Teaching Award to Prof. Bernie Wuensch, Course VIII ’55, S.M. Course VIII ’ 57, Ph.D. Course XII ’63.

Soldier Design Competition

Atmosphere, a team co-founded by Albert Park, class of 2008, was this year’s Soldier Design Competition (SDC) third-place winner of $3000. Sponsored by the ISN, the SDC generates new products and systems to help the modern soldier both on and off the battlefield. The competition is open to the MIT community and to West Point cadets (the first- and second-place teams are from West Point). Atmosphere’s award-winning project is a computing system to narrow the human-computer divide. They focussed on immersing the user in a computing environment through a screen that fills the user’s field of vision and utilizes surround sound with the goal of adding tactile feedback. A prototype was customized for military use as a digital mission planner. Atmosphere’s system is not only more efficient and accurate than the current

technology of sand tables and rock drills, but it allows collaboration through networking among different locations. The system is noteworthy for being built from offthe-shelf parts, allowing customization and ensuring easy compatibility. The team has filed for provisional patent and plans to incorporate as they look for military and commercial opportunities and Small Business Innovation Research grants (SBIR).

DeltaX, a team co-founded by Course III graduate student Daniel Pressl, won the SDC Director’s Award.

DeltaX has developed a novel approach to fabricating insulation by combining new materials in a simple design.

The same project was a semi-finalist at this Spring’s $100K competition.

Gold Medal winners at the MRS meeting in Boston in Fall 2006 were Fabien Sorin for ”Metal Insulator Semiconductor Mesostructured Fibers”and Ming Tang for “A Diffuse Interface Thermodynamic Model of Grain Boundary Transitions in Binary Alloys.” Also receiving the Gold Medal was Daeyeon Lee, a ChemE student coadvised by Prof. Rubner, for “Multifunctional Antifogging Coatings from Layer-by-Layer Assembly of Nanoparticles.” Kuangshin Tai received the Silver Medal for “Nanomechanics of Bone: Fundamental Insights Regarding Structure-Function, Mineral-Organic Deformation, and Heterogeneity.”

Three DMSE students were winners in the 2006 Materials Day poster contest: Daeyeon Lee “AllNanoparticle Thin Film Coatings: A Versatile Means to Create All-in-One Coatings,” Xiaogang Liu “Highly Wettability-Reversible Nanowire Paper,” Fabien Sorin “Multimaterials Integrated Fibers.“ Anna Bershteyn received the Hertz Foundation Award to pursue her graduate studies in our Department. These five-year fellowship awards recognize qualities the Foundation believes are essential ingredients of future professional accomplishment.

Alicia Jackson has been selected as the 2007–08 MRS/OSA Congressional Fellow. She will complete her Sc.D. in June with a thesis on “Phase Separation and Nanostructuring in the Ligand Shell of Nanoparticles.”

While at MIT, she was involved with creating the new science policy “Bootcamp” for science and engineering graduate students and post-docs.

Daniel Pressl was an organizer of 2fast4u, an exhibition of high-speed photography and videography that was a collaboration that included MIT’s Edgerton Center, students in Austria, and many others. From April 2 to 19, the exhibition presented photographs, interactive objects, and a live-camera hookup between the exhibition in Wolfsberg, Austria, two Austrian high schools, and MIT allowing conversation and interaction among visitors to the separate locations.

A L U M N I N E W S Alumni Entrepreneurship Alumni, current students, and friends attended a Course III workshop on Entrepreneurship during MIT’s Graduate Alumni Convocation and Reunion in April 2006.

Several members of the Course III family told their entrepreneurship stories and discussed the rapid transition from idea, to research, to patent, to marketplace.

Panelists included Micro-CHIPS co-founder Prof.

Michael Cima; AmberWave Systems co-founders Mayank Bulsara, S.M. ’95, Ph.D. ’98, and Prof. Gene Fitzgerald, ’85; Luminus Devices co-founder Alexei Erchak, S.M. ’99, Ph.D. ’02; and RallyPoint co-founder Forrest Liau, ’06.

In particular, Forrest Liau and his co-founders, Tony Eng of EECS, David Lin, ’06, Byron Hsu, ’06 and Course VI ’07, and Han Xu, Course VI ’06, were a big hit as they recounted their experiences in founding RallyPoint, a company dedicated to technological advances in handcomputer interfaces for military and first responders (see http://www.rallypoint.info). While full-time students, they have juggled academics, research, prototyping, and SBIR proposals.

Books Why Things Break: Understanding the World by the Way It Comes Apart, written by Mark Eberhart, Ph.D. ’83, details the intellectual journey the author took in becoming a professor of chemistry and geochemistry at the Colorado School of Mines. His research into “the study of why things break” led him from the kayaking and skiing of Colorado to a graduate degree at MIT where his thesis advisor was the late Prof. Morris Cohen.

His engaging book was sent to the department by an alumna who was delighted to find a materials science book written for the general audience.

Transitions

R E T I R E M E N T Anne M. Mayes, ’86, has retired and moved to her hometown of Mustang, Oklahoma.

Prof. Mayes came to MIT as a freshman and enrolled in Course III, completed a Ph.D. at Northwestern, and then became a postdoc at IBM Almaden.

Prof. Mayes joined the MIT faculty in 1993, Anne M. Mayes and was one of the first women tenured in DMSE. As of this writing, she has supervised sixteen Ph.D. candidates, seven M.S. degrees, and a host of UROPs. Some of her many contributions to MIT’s materials science curriculum include introducing biomaterials to the department and redesigning the laboratory subjects to be the types of subjects that she would have wanted to take as a student. In recognition of her excellence in teaching, she was named a MacVicar Fellow in 2001.

The role of polymers in environmental issues is an ongoing theme in Prof. Mayes’ research. A major development was “baroplastics,” a plastic that becomes soft under pressure, thus allowing recycling without thermal degradation and with less energy expended. She addressed energy storage by using block copolymers in a lithium polymer battery. Other research projects have been in water filtration and biomaterials. Her research accomplishments have been recognized with awards from her peers: in 1998, she was the first woman to receive the MRS Outstanding Young Investigator Award; in 1999, she was awarded the prestigious John H. Dillon Medal from the American Physical Society Division of High Polymer Physics for “her unique combination of theoretical and experimental insight into polymer selforganization”; and in Spring 2006, she became the first woman recipient of the Carl S. Marvel Creative Polymer Chemistry Award.

Anne is known for her dedication to her students, for developing cutting-edge research, and for committing herself wholeheartedly to making DMSE, MIT, and the

world better. We will miss her smile, enthusiasm, and infectious laughter that echoed through the hallways of Building 13.

O B I T U A R I E S Rowland M. Cannon, Jr. Dr. Rowland M. Cannon, Jr., ’66, Sc.D. ’75, passed away after a heart attack on April 21, 2006, in Berkeley, CA. Dr. Cannon, a Staff Scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, was well-known in the field of materials science, both for his breadth and depth of knowledge and for his good humor and deep friendships. Prior to working at LBNL, Dr. Cannon held a faculty position in our department (1975–1982), and he spent February 2006 at MIT as the first W.D. Kingery Distinguished Visitor. During this visit, he gave formal seminars on “Structure-Composition Existence Regimes for Grain Boundaries: Opportunities for Science and Exploitation,” and met informally with many in DMSE. His work was rewarded with numerous honors, including the American Ceramic Society’s award for paper of the year (1991), being named an ACS Fellow (1994), receiving the Ross Coffin Purdy Award and Sosman Memorial Lectureship (1997) from the American Ceramic Society (ACerS), and earning a Humboldt Rowland M. Cannon, Jr. Foundation research award (1999–2000). The impact of his research in the thermodynamics, processing, and structural properties of ceramics was extraordinary; in recognition of this, an ACerS symposium was held in his honor on the occasion of his sixtieth birthday. During the symposium, his colleagues and friends praised his creativity while roasting him for his disregard for deadlines, schedules, and conventional thinking; he received the praise and the teasing gracefully. He had recently been working with numerous groups around the world on the character, stability, and properties of interfaces for ceramics and their role in microstructure development and mechanical behavior; this included the formation and adherence of ceramic-metal interfaces, wetting, interface mechanics, and kinetic behavior.

Indeed, throughout his career, he was known for his profound understanding and insight into the mechanical behavior and microstructure evolution in ceramics.

The Basic Science Division of the American Ceramics Society is organizing “The Science of Ceramic Interfaces: An International Symposium Memorializing Dr. Rowland M. Cannon” in 2008; the symposium is devoted to the fundamental aspects of interfaces and how they control properties and behavior in ceramics.

Dr. Cannon loved outdoor activities and was proud to have summitted Pico de Orizaba, the third highest peak in North America, to have completed the Hilly Hundred bicycle tour in Bloomington, Indiana, and to have traversed southern France and Spain on bike expeditions.

He was a free thinker, an eclectic reader, a devout contrarian, and a provocative conversationalist.

Dr. Cannon is survived by his children, Hilary, Ethan, and Zachary, and their families; his brother Douglas and his sister Maurine and their families; and his father, Rowland M. Cannon, and stepmother.

Walter Alan Backofen.

Walter Alan Backofen, ’46, Sc.D. ’50, died at home on Dec. 2, 2006.

Born in Rockville, CT, on Dec. 8, 1925, he was a son of Walter Paul and Bertha (Pfau) Backofen. In 1943, he graduated as valedictorian from Rockville Walter Alan Backofen High School, entered MIT, and enlisted in the U.S. Navy. In 1950 he married Elizabeth (Lib) Wood Warren and was appointed to the faculty in the Department of Metallurgy. During a career of teaching, research, publishing, and consulting to

industry and government, he designed new subjects and a new laboratory, found great students and sponsors, became recognized for bridging theory and practice over a wide range of real-life problems, including automotive stampings, orthopedic implants, and the Star Wars defense shield. He belonged to the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers and the American Society for Metals and Materials, and was elected to membership in Tau Beta Pi and Sigma Xi. He was the first in his field to receive three principal achievement awards: for teaching (Bradley Stoughton Award, 1958), research (Howe Medal, 1964), and professional leadership (Campbell Lecturer, 1973). He was a popular speaker in his profession and pioneered as a popular-science lecturer on live television for Channel 2 of Boston during its early days of broadcasting from the roller skating rink across Mass. Ave. from MIT. A 1964 paper on “superplasticity” identified the ability of metals, temporarily given a near nano-size grain structure, to behave like silly putty. At an International Conference on Superplasticity in Chengdu, China, in June 2006, that paper was recognized for its seminal influence on a now burgeoning global industry. A Gordon Conference at Kimball Union Academy introduced him to New Hampshire’s Upper Valley. During a sabbatical at Dartmouth College, he wrote Deformation Processing, on his technical specialty. Upon retiring from MIT, he and Lib returned to NH and together they turned the ca.

1790 William Gage place in East Plainfield into Hill Farm, where they managed a square mile or so of unposted woodlands, preserved a broad cross-section of period outbuildings and accessory structures, and grew about thirty antique varieties of apples, blueberries, and Christmas trees.

Through an American art and antiques business that he ran in partnership with his wife, he uncovered the Bartlett-Kimball Circle of Queen Anne style in New Hampshire furniture-making from ca. 1760 to 1820. To share the eclectic mix of new information this produced, they founded the Lord Timothy Dexter Press in 1988.

Studies of recent interest addressed early American feminism and marital fertility in New Hampshire, the New Hampshire limitation on a personal-rights interpretation of the Second Amendment, and mass hysteria in Enfield’s Shaker culture.

He leaves his wife, his brother Albert, and his foster sisters Dolores and Lois.

Anthony J. Zona. We were saddened by the death of Anthony Zona on June 5, 2006. Tony was born in Boston and was a life-long resident of East Boston. He served his country as a Signalman First Class in the US Navy during World War II, serving on the USS Allagash (AO-97), where he learned welding. Tony was a Technical Instructor in the Building 4 welding lab for more than 35 years. As welding integrates the science and technology of metallurgy, in the past, Course III students received welding instruction from faculty, assisted by Mr. Zona. He was well-liked, and his ingenuity and skill in creating artistic and technical pieces is remembered in the Department. Tony will be greatly missed by all that knew him. He was the beloved husband of Theresa M. (Gaeta) Zona, loving brother of Joseph Zona of East Boston and Marie Zafferano of Watertown, and a cherished uncle to many nieces and nephews.

Irvin M. Puffer

Irvin M. "Puff" Puffer. Irvin M. Puffer, born in 1921 in Carlisle, Massachusetts, died in that town on March 4, 2007. He served with distinction in the US Navy in World War II, based in Bermuda, flying and maintaining antisubmarine reconnaissance missions over the Atlantic Ocean. He came to work for MIT in 1962 as a senior technician and laboratory supervisor for the Superconducting Materials Group. Faculty participants in

the SMG included John Wulff (DMSE), Robert Rose (DMSE), Paul Gray (EECS), Margaret MacVicar (Physics), Judith Bostock (Physics), John Hafstrom (DMSE), and Leonard Gruenberg (EECS). He designed and constructed instruments and apparatus for the measurement of superconducting properties at low and very low temperatures, high magnetic fields and electric currents and high stresses. He introduced many generations of MIT students (and a few faculty!) to the virtues of precision, ingenuity, and self-sufficiency. He retired in 1991. The students he guided went on to productive careers, many with great distinction and achievement.

His coworkers remember Puff as a “great guy, lots of fun, and a whiz” who acted as a friend and mentor to staff and faculty, as well as to students. He is survived by his wife June (O'Brien), his daughter Carol Casselman and her husband Fred, and his grandchildren Dr. Amy Harley and her husband Edward, and Dr. Aaron Casselman and his wife Megan.

Mayes (1986) Fellowship in Materials Science and Engineering was recently established to honor Prof. Anne Mayes’ contributions to the Department and the Institute. Income from the endowed fellowship fund will provide fellowship support for firstyear graduate students in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. The fund was started with a generous gift and has been supported with donations from colleagues and friends as well as matching funds from the Dean of Engineering and the Provost’s Office.

A N D D O W M A T E R I A L S E N G I N E E R I N G C O N T E S T On April 3, DMSE launched MADMEC — the MIT and Dow Materials Engineering Contest, a new contest at MIT, co-sponsored by Dow Chemical Company and the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. The theme of MADMEC's first year is alternative energy: the contest challenges groups of students to design and build devices that harness, store, or exploit sources of alternative energy through principles of materials science. The top three teams will win $5,000, $3,000, and $2,000 prizes, respectively. The well-attended kick-off event featured talks by Department Head Ned Thomas, DMSE Technical Instructor Michael Tarkanian, ’00, S.M. ’03, Dr. Ed Shaffer, Ph.D. ’95 of Dow, and current graduate student Forrest Liau, ’06, — a winner of several engineering contests at MIT.

Proposals for entry in MADMEC are due May 18.
