Shine Bright: Being a Light in Darkness By

Candace

Hooker

As a little girl, Jessica Larry grew up singing this well known gospel song in church, with lyrics that go a little something like this:

This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine...Everywhere I go, I’m gonna let it shine...Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.

Those who know Jessica know that she is not afraid to let her light shine wherever she goes. She’s the kind of person who makes friends everywhere she goes; she’s the kind of person who doesn’t hesitate to share what she has with those in need; she’s the kind of person who is always willing to give a helping hand.

It comes as no surprise then that her platform for this year as Miss Harris County’s Outstanding Teen is “Be Bright: Being the Light in Darkness.” Her goal is simple, yet much needed in this day and age: to uplift and encourage people to overcome obstacles in their lives through acts of kindness and service.

“Being a light in the darkness is about helping others find a way out of a dark situation. It’s about helping people find coping mechanisms and resources to help them overcome whatever obstacles they are facing,” said Jessica.

The Texas Cares For Children program was created to address social inequality on a peer-to-peer level through leadership development, community partnerships and training. Texas Cares For Children, a 501(c)(3), strives to bring life skills, values education, and leadership into schools; demonstrating the importance of setting personal and educational goals; teaching students how to stand up to negative peer pressure and turn it into positive peer pressure and establishing lifelong healthy practices. The initial program was developed in 1993 through collaborative efforts with the National Committee for the Prevention of Child Abuse, and won the endorsement of former President George Bush and then Secretary of Education, Lamar Alexander.

The concept is to help each individual participant develop and improve his or her capabilities through instruction and training which in turn benefits the community as a whole. By sharing a platform about which an individual is passionate, each participant not only teaches, but learns. Participants learn about character building and life skills, making healthy choices and wellness practices part of their lifestyle, effectively dealing with bullying and peer pressure, overcoming adversity and challenges, understanding and respecting one another’s differences and combating drug and alcohol abuse. PULSE

ON THE HUNT COMPETITION FASHION Beyond the Gown BY HUNTER DANIEL

WHO, WHAT, WEAR What's the tricky part of competition? Figuring out what to wear for interview. We all know that looking your best is important for obvious reasons, but so is feeling good. Finding the balance between professionalism and your personality can be tricky as well. It is critical to remember what the judges are looking for in each phase of competition and highlight what makes you feel most beautiful. With a little bit of ON THE HUNT advice, my hope is to help you with your fashion preparation.

WHAT'S IN YOUR CLOSET?

THE PACKAGED DEAL

One of the most important items in your pageant closest

should be the interview outfit. Why is it so important?

without being distracting. It is critical to feel like yourself in an

1. interview is the most time you spend in front of the judges 10 minutes (Miss) and 8 minutes (Teens) 2. it is the time you get to truly express yourself the most and share with the judges who you are 3. It is an outfit you can wear for many years to come, for future job interviews, special events, and more.

interview. You want to feel smart and confident while being stylish and chic. I have always appreciated – “Love is in the Details” so love what you wear. No matter the interview you're preparing for, my words of advice would be to always understand the culture, consider your interview outfit and dress the part.

I like to think of how this one outfit can have solid value well beyond the competition itself. It is true, the interview is about more than what you wear, and it’s all about the details at the same time. It's about your personal development, social impact initiative and your commitment to being one’s authentic self. Interview is the game changer.

SET THE TONE UPFRONT

Remember to consider the phase of competition in detail as well. While you are standing behind a podium to speak, you're in front of a panel of judges who will be asking questions in a press style manner. As well, you have 10 minutes to make the absolute best, first impression and if you can master this skill, you will be a leg up on the competition for the rest of your life.

UNIQUE & MEMORABLE

Everyone wants to make a great impression and these tips will

her fashion is the best one for you. Wear what makes you feel

1. Catch the eyes of the judging panel from the second you walk in the door. Aside from the interview outfit, your Hair, Makeup and Accessories ALL play a key element in the overall presentation. 2. Look like a Miss Texas and let your presentation be the level

beautiful and confident. Be unique, bold in color choice and focus on what best flatters your figure. Know Your Style and Brand and Stick With It!

To be memorable you don’t have to invest in a custom-made outfit. Off-The-Rack can look totally custom. Shop for unique

features and cuts that make the outfit standout. Then marry it

with the right seamstress. That’s your best investment by far.

3. Be authentic, poised, and glamorous so the judges can’t stop thinking of anyone else but you to send to Miss America. 4. Bring the "IT" factor from head to toe; In what you wear, how you speak and in how you develop a relationship with the judges.. Even if it is only a 10 minute interview.

Feel it's too tight or too much cleavage showing? Listen to your inner self and make the appropriate modifications. Think twice about selecting a busy pattern, which might do more talking than you. Don't distract the judges. Remember, you want the focus to be on you and the message you are delivering.

WHAT MAKES A STANDOUT OUTFIT? Unique features and cuts help make an outfit standout. Color Choice: This is very important. Pick something that looks good on you and will grab their attention while conveying the confidence you want to express. This choice can take an outfit from classic to modern. Fabric is Key: Different types of fabrics have a unique presentation in front of the lights and camera. You will want to consider if the item will wrinkle easily. While a Print Fabric might be fun and may work, select carefully as it can also be a risk. You want them to notice you and not the herringbone detail. Accessories: Shoes and jewelry should all be classic staple pieces to compliment and not takeaway from the overall presentation. A classic closed toe pump will never go out of style. Hair and Makeup: Two skillsets that will last a lifetime. Perfecting your interview hair and makeup weeks before the competition is a must. Ensure your hair will not be falling in your face and causing you to be distracted, keeping you from an opportunity to connect with the judges. Makeup: There is a difference in stage makeup and private interview makeup. If you are looking and/or feeling like your face is a decorated cake, chances are you've probably put on too much makeup.

JUDGES CRITERIA Private Interview with the Judges Panel Communication skills including personality, intelligence, validated opinions, emotional control, overall first impression and professionalism. The overall qualities and attributes necessary in order to fulfill the job responsibilities of Miss Texas. Judges are not scoring based on their own personal agreement with the candidate's statements, position, beliefs, or social impact initiative, but instead how well the candidate interacts and thoughtfully articulates their answers.

On-Stage Interview Competition Communication, stage presence, commanding presence, and relatability. Intelligence, personality, charisma, and aptitude for the job. First impression reaction Interactivity and discussion; ability to build on a conversation from the personal interview. Ability to clearly articulate her social impact initiative in a public, presentation style format. Potential to serve as a role model who is reflective of her generation.

FAVORITE 2021 FASHION TRENDS FOR INTERVIEW Pantsuits That Demand Attention

This pantsuit screams confidence. Love the detail on the sleeve and neckline. Gives a strong, conservative, yet confident vibe.

Powerful color and looking like the boss. Great attention to the detail, with the slight additions of accessories. Tastefully done.

Great attention to simple detail drawing the eye to her face. Classic, clean, and you see her, not an obtrusive accessory.

Stunning. Classic button up with a beautiful ruffle detail and matching pant. This truly is a showstopper.

The neck detail with slight pattern fabric and classic fit says a woman in charge. Necktie could be a risk, yet this was well paired.

Tastefully done and a jumpsuit that catches your eye. Vibrant color and just enough detail on one shoulder.

A unique piece. Three different fabrics, with the same color, giving three different variations. Here comes the Top Boss walking down the runway.

Classic fit with a unique bustline. Appropriate and nice touch for on-stage interview. Another showstopper and a glam outfit as well.

Bold Miss USA Interview outfit. Had all the bells and whistles; unique lines, fuller sleeves, loose neckline, belt, A bit risky but it was well received.

Dresses That Rule the World

Absolutely Stunning. The fringe skirt adds a twist to the professional top portion and brings the outfit together as it couples with a classic pump.

A Win for Me. The detail and change in texture is so interesting. The lines would be flattering on all most all body types.

Such a strong piece for On-Stage Interview. Great detailed neckline with a below the knee skirt makes this dress red-carpet and interview ready.

Extra Extra and it worked. Really like the sleeve detail with the peplum. Typically would say one or the other, but this outfit is a win.

Attention to detail at its finest. The black piping on the edge of the white fabric is an eye catcher. Such a simple, smart, and classic outfit ready to motivate tomorrow's leaders.

This bold and beautiful color choice makes a statement. Love the change in fabric detail at the neckline. The satin silky fabric will standout for sure.

Lace, while not for everyone, can be so beautiful. The lines on this dress are exquisite. Smart, chic and fashionable. I thought Kate Middleton when I saw this dress.

Highly intrigued by this fitted blouse with ruffle sleeve. Simply add a pencil skirt with a classic shoe and you're award show ready .

Immediately caught my eye. While patterns can be risky, if done correctly this private interview dress would be absolutely Unforgettable.

Continued Impact Volunteer, 2001-present Donor, 2001-present Judges Chairman, 2009-present

I began attending the Miss Texas Pageant in 1985 when my dance teacher, Jo Thompson, began competing. When she won the title of Miss Texas in 1987 our family went to the Miss America pageant in Atlantic City and we were hooked! I have been either attending the pageant or competing for the past 35 years. This organization has given me the tools to be a successful woman. The interview experience alone has been life changing and it taught me at a young age of 14 (when I started competing in the teen program) how to speak well and think on my feet.

It opened and continues to open doors in my

life 20 years later. I am forever grateful for the friendships and memories for the past 35 years.

STORIES AND MEMORIES Jan Mitchell, Executive Director of Miss Texas, jokes that I am the only Miss Texas who won and never went away! I immediately started volunteering after my year as Miss Texas and am honored to be the Judge's Chairman. One of my favorite and funniest memories of being Miss Texas would have to be attending the Rockdale County Fair for a week. I was asked to sing the National Anthem at the opening night of their rodeo but when I got there I learned that I would be singing from the back of a horse. I was also told that my horse belonged to the girl who would be carrying the American flag into the arena and that my horse would just follow her right in. Now, have you ever paid attention to how fast that girl has to ride to get the flag to fly behind her? Let me tell you-- FAST.

My horse took off like a bolt

of lightning with me on it wearing leather pants, a cute, but lower cut shirt, my crown and heals!! I am never been so happy to get off a horse in my life!

I became involved in order to represent the Miss Prairie View A&M University pageant in the state competition which also afforded scholarship support to help me achieve my studies.

STORIES AND MEMORIES My fondest memory of the Miss Texas/Miss America Pageant in Fort Worth, was just being there, as the first black contestant in the pageant’s 33 year history.

This was not just history making for the Pageant, but, it was for the University, for black women throughout the State of Texas, and, certainly for me. No one knew what to expect, least of all me. There were no surprises, however; everyone was welcoming and kind; I so enjoyed meeting Phyllis George, who was crowned Miss Texas that year and went on a few months later, to win the Miss America Crown.

As a young girl, I used to watch the Miss Texas Pageant on television. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine I would ever grace that stage as a contestant, Miss Prairie View A&M University. Thank you to the Miss Texas Scholarship Pageant for the experience of a lifetime, and for embracing inclusion with no reservation, and impacting so positively the life of a young woman who previously, could only watch and dream.
