The Texas Cares For Children program was created to address social inequality on a peer-to-peer level through leadership development, community partnerships and training. Texas Cares For Children, a 501(c)(3), strives to bring life skills, values education, and leadership into schools; demonstrating the importance of setting personal and educational goals; teaching students how to stand up to negative peer pressure and turn it into positive peer pressure and establishing lifelong healthy practices. The initial program was developed in 1993 through collaborative efforts with the National Committee for the Prevention of Child Abuse, and won the endorsement of former
President George Bush and then Secretary of Education Lamar Alexander. The concept is to help each individual participant develop and improve his or her capabilities through instruction and training which in turn benefits the community as a whole. By sharing a platform about which an individual is passionate, each participant not only teaches, but learns. Participants learn about character building and life skills, making healthy choices and wellness practices part of their lifestyle, effectively dealing with bullying and peer pressure, overcoming adversity and challenges, understanding and respecting one another’s differences and combating drug and alcohol abuse.

Zoom... but make it fashion Even though it is now January 2021, the way we work and interact is still very virtual. Video calls and conferences are at the center of meetings, family gatherings, classes and celebrations. Our outfits are frequently selected based on comfort and a great pair of pumps are (temporarily) less of a stay-at-home staple. However, there are still many ways to stay home and stay stylish! Let's examine how accessories can help bring a look together and leave an impression during your next Zoom meeting.
Clip Art A barrette (in the United States), also known as a hair clasp (in England), clip, or slide, is a clasp for holding all that beautiful hair in place. It can be much more than a simple bobby pin. This is an opportunity to get creative and think way beyond the usual metals or plastic. Why not make it clip ART?! Rhinestones, feathers, pearls or even a bit of decorative fabric can make a major impact. A hair accessory could take you from hair to there with just two clips, a clasp and a hello!

Bring back the brooch! Believe it or not, brooches have made a comeback in a big way. This little accessory has landed itself on the list of the latest fashion trends. What I love about a brooch is how it can add a vintage vibe or a retro flair to any outfit. They are versatile in both design and use. Simple turtleneck? Add a brooch. Full ball gown at the inauguration? Add a brooch. There is a brooch for every style, whether you consider yourself classic or eclectic. Make it your own by adding a splash of color with gemstones, some sparkle with rhinestones, keep it modern with clean lines or be simply striking in pearls.

All Ears An earring can be a simple piece of jewelry or a strong statement piece. Earrings have been popular throughout many historic time periods and often hold cultural significance. What I personally love about an earring is that it can be created from a million different materials and in any shape or size. Try a new earring for your next virtual chat, but consider your selection before turning the camera on! A great accessory should draw attention to and complement your face... not take away from it. Too much movement (or a strong glare in the reflection from your ring light) could be distracting for you and others. Perhaps you have a special pair passed down from a loved one or prefer a loud accessory straight off the runway. Either way, there's a perfect day, outfit, and event for every pair.

I give all the thanks to my older sister, Christina, for getting me involved with the Miss Texas Organization. We would always watch Miss America together and loved trying to guess who would win. However, it was my sister's dream to
compete first and she begged me to compete with her. She asked me to join her numerous times, but I was stubborn and continued to say no. I eventually caved the night before a local competition and prepared to compete the next morning. By the grace of God, I somehow won that first local title with my sister and my life has forever been changed by the experience.
The Miss Texas Organization not only has given me the opportunity to further my education, but it has given me the voice and tools to turn my dreams and my passions into my life. I truly would not be the woman I am today, if it weren't for the countless hours, volunteers, and opportunities that this organization has provided me.
BIO Since becoming involved with the Miss America Organization, Heather has used her scholarships to receive her Associates Degree in Christian Ministries, and will soon obtain her Bachelors in Business Management. She hopes to pursue a Masters degree in Publishing. Aside from her educational journey, Heather founded her own print publication, "Virtuous." This women's magazine focuses on pushing women towards a life of purpose and virtue. She created the "Women of Virtue" podcast, which can be found on all streaming services. Heather also works part-time as a worship director in her church, and hopes to establish an annual women's conference.

STORIES & MEMORIES One of my favorite memories took place during my first year as a teen candidate. It was the final night of competition for Miss Texas' Outstanding Teen and we waited during intermission prior to the top five being announced. I was standing backstage in my long and beautiful evening gown, desperate to go to the bathroom. I walked into a nearby dressing room in hopes of using the restroom and saw Olivia McMillan (Miss America's Outstanding Teen 2015) sitting in there with the state titleholders. Olivia, being the kind soul she is, saw how long my gown was and offered to help hold my skirt while I went to the restroom. I was young and awestruck by our amazing former MAO Teen, and suddenly became too nervous to pee in front of her. So, we found ourselves in the most awkward silence and she eventually helped me hold my skirt as she left so I could go privately. After intermission, I was called into the top five and in the wings of the stage I could hear Olivia yelling, "YES GO PEE GIRL!!" Fast forward to a year later, when I was blessed to win Miss Texas' Outstanding Teen (2016) and left for the national competition. That summer, I saw Olivia again and she said, "PEE GIRL!! YOU DID IT! YOU WON!" Needless to say the relationship that Olivia and I have has grown leaps and bounds since that moment, but I will forever be the "shy pee girl" from 2015.

My mom saw an advertisement in our neighborhood newsletter and thought it would be a fun way to earn some scholarship money. After I finished competing in my first competition and we were walking to the car, my mom looked at me and asked “This wasn’t the last pageant, was it?” I just looked at her and smiled. She shook her head and said “I’ve created a monster!” And I’ve been in love with pageants ever since.
I have met some of the kindest, most loving people through the Miss Texas Organization. I have the best mentor and friend who started out as my coach and director, and I now mentor current titleholder who will forever be a best friend. The list goes on and on.
BIO Lindsay is an ICU nurse in the Houston area and is currently pursing a Masters degree in Executive Nurse Leadership at her alma mater, the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. When she’s not at work, Lindsay loves spending her free time with her chi-weenie dog, Baby.

STORIES & MEMORIES When I was competing for a local, Jim Hanson came up to me and jokingly said, “Ya know, you need to smile more, you always look angry!” Now, anytime I see him, I make sure to give him my cheesiest smile!
One of my favorite parts about Miss Texas Week was always spending time with the other candidates. One year we went on a scavenger hunt which included trying to figure out which Lone Star Lady had polygrip with her, running around the Renaissance in search of a hiding Jan Mitchell and asking the front desk host to take a picture of us spelling out Texas with our bodies on the floor of the lobby.

STORIES & MEMORIES Amanda grew up in the Miss America System starting as a Lone Star Princess, which she did for three years before becoming eligible to compete as a teen. As a pianist, Amanda had to use stick-on-nails that she could easily remove for the talent competition. One year, she really struggled to keep them on throughout the week. It was not uncommon, as her Directors, for us to find her stick-on-nails lying about. BIO After a huge success and scholarship earnings in the Miss Texas’ Outstanding Teen Organization, Amanda went on to complete in the Teen USA system. She is currently Miss North Dakota Teen USA. Amanda earned her pilot wings at the youngest legal age of 17, joining less than 1% of the U.S. population that holds an FAA Private Pilot License. Recently, Amanda completed her instrument and commercial flight training and is in the process of obtaining her multi-engine license. To pursue her ambitions, she attends college in North Dakota, dual majoring in Commercial Aviation and International Studies with an emphasis in Chinese and French. As an Honors Student at UND, Amanda is determined to become the vice president of a major airline. She studies piano at a collegiate level, serves as a select officer on SAAC (Student Aviation Advisory Council), participates in the Chess Club and Chinese Club, engages as a sister in Pi Beta Phi, and is a member on UND's Dance Team. Having over 1,400 documented hours of volunteer service, Amanda incorporated her nonprofit, Reach Out to Outreaches, into a 501(c)(3). She is also proud to not only wear combat boots as a Captain in the Civil Air Patrol but high heels as a New York Fashion Week Model!

Keep a teachable and grateful spirit. College can be challenging, worth the risks, and you want to grow as a person as well as long life learner - BUT you must be willing.
A quiet place for me is the library. I find very few distractions there. This enables me to practice prioritizing my responsibilities and to learn to self-control with my friends and time.
ORGANIZED A planner, this keeps assignments, birthdays, and all the things you would’ve forgotten about in one place. A planner holds you Accountable to your commitments!
CONTENTED LIGHT-HEARTED Fun late nights are a must. You may not know a soul if/ when you go to college but it is so refreshing to make time with other
people; you can let your guard down and have some chilled out fun!
Allow yourself to enjoy the little things. Be content with your situation and with whatever you’re given. Call your family, write a letter, make a new friend, watch a movie, talk about life and what your hopes are, PRAY, journal and go for a drive.

This special event is held during Miss Texas and Miss Texas' Outstanding Teen Competition week (June 20 - 26, 2021) and is a fun-filled week of activities, rehearsals and performances. Participants enjoy lunch with their titleholder, take part in a fashion show, attend a real Princess party, and perform in a group production number on the Miss Texas stage.
