s the crisp fall air settles in, the leaves begin to change, and the St. Louis Blues take the ice for another season, there’s a palpable sense of energy and anticipation in our city. Here at the Missouri Athletic Club, that same energy is alive and well. October is one of the most vibrant months of the year at the MAC, filled with opportunities for fellowship, celebration, and community.

We are also nearly a month into our 2026 fiscal year, and I am pleased to share that our new chief financial officer, Kari Foster, is settling in seamlessly as she transitions alongside our outgoing CFO Pam Roth. Pam’s many years of service to the Club have been invaluable, and we thank her for her leadership and dedication. At the same time, we are excited to welcome Kari into her role and look forward to the expertise and fresh perspective she will bring as we continue to strengthen the MAC’s financial foundation.

This month’s calendar is full of events that highlight the unique spirit of the Club. I’d like to draw your attention to several of the larger happenings scheduled for October, and I encourage you to mark your calendars.

We begin with one of the most inspiring traditions of the year, the Women of Distinction Luncheon on Oct. 3. Each year, the MAC honors four outstanding women from the St. Louis region, as well as one Rising Star, for their vision and mentorship across business, civic, and philanthropic endeavors. These honorees embody leadership, generosity, and the drive to positively impact the community. I encourage all members to attend this luncheon, as I am certain you will leave feeling both inspired and proud of the women shaping the future of the region.

More events on the calendar include the Oyster Social, Classics and Cocktails, Wrestling at the MAC V, and of course we celebrate Halloween with Pumpkins & Pancakes at the West Clubhouse. For details and to register for these events and more, please visit the MAC app, which continues to be the best way to stay updated on all that is happening at the Club.

In addition to these exciting events, there are several important updates that I am proud to share.

First, if you haven’t had the chance to visit the newly

renovated Cafe Cherry Diamond, I encourage you to stop by soon. The cafe now offers updated breakfast and lunch menus and expanded hours. The refreshed space and menus have been very well received, and I am confident it will quickly become a favorite spot for members looking for a casual, welcoming dining experience. More information can be found on page 29

At the Downtown Clubhouse, you may also notice progress in the Missouri Room. New carpet is installed on the grand staircase, as well as in the foyer and ballroom. The project also includes fresh paint, updated wallcoverings, and new window treatments. We look forward to unveiling the complete renovation later this month and are confident the Missouri Room will once again shine as one of the premier spaces in the city for member gatherings and special events.

Finally, I want to thank everyone who participated in and supported our Foundations’ Month activities in August. Member donations totaled more than $17,000, and more than $30,000 was raised from the MAC Sports Foundation Golf Tournament at Norwood Hills Country Club. Additionally, $59,000 was raised for an Art Lounge bar project. This success is a direct reflection of the generosity and commitment of our membership, and we are deeply grateful.

As you can see, October promises to be a month full of activity, excitement, and community at the Club. From celebrating leaders in our region to enjoying one-of-a-kind entertainment to creating family memories, there is truly something for everyone.

Thank you, as always, for your continued engagement, support, and enthusiasm. It is your participation that makes our Club the dynamic and welcoming place it is. I look forward to seeing you at many of these events in the weeks ahead.

Here’s to a fantastic fall season at the MAC!

Warm regards,

LETTER FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER

The Missouri Athletic Club continues to experience a stream of activity across the Downtown, West and Clayton clubhouses.

Employees are at the heart of the Club’s ongoing success, and the strategic focus remains on being an Employer of Choice. I am proud to share some exciting updates about the MAC team:

Welcome, MAC West

Executive Chef Brian Hardesty! Chef Brian brings over 25 years of experience in the St. Louis market as an executive chef, restaurateur and consultant, with many noteworthy accomplishments throughout his career.

Congratulations to our Manager in Training graduates, Baylee Beard and Tyler Bequette. Baylee graduated in May from Missouri State University’s hospitality program and has joined the catering team full-time. Tyler has worked in MAC banquet operations for the past 18 months and is now full-time with the MAC membership department. Both demonstrated tremendous passion while completing the 16-week program.

Congratulations as well to this quarter’s Distinguished Employees: Ida Gaut, West Salon Services, and Brian Dougherty, audio-visual specialist. Both represent the MAC’s best, delivering excellence every day.

And congratulations to Rodney Dear, who celebrates 35 years of service to the MAC on Oct. 17. Thank you, Rodney, for leading hospitality efforts at the Downtown Clubhouse for more than three decades.

Looking ahead, MAC Clayton continues preparing for a successful launch in early 2026. As recently reported by the Board, the membership offering “MAC Clayton” is now available to prospective members. Please refer colleagues or friends to the membership office to begin the application process.

The Pierre Laclede Center patio served as the perfect venue to kick off the Saint Louis Art Fair, on Sept. 5, hosting more than 200 attendees. This is certain to be the first of many MAC Clayton traditions. Photos from this exclusive event are available on page 7

Greg Gerber, MAC Clayton’s director of operations, is diligently preparing for opening by overseeing updates to kitchens and bar areas. Final interviews are underway for the executive chef position, and I look forward to sharing this announcement soon.

The building owner is completing fire sprinkler installation, after which improvements led by the design team at HOK will begin. Enhancement plans will be shared in the coming months.

Finally, the Board of Governors voted last month to increase the initiation fee to $10,000, effective Oct. 8. This increase strengthens capital funds to drive future projects and enhancements, while reflecting the momentum the Missouri Athletic Club continues to build.

Enjoy October, and look forward to seeing you around the MAC!

MAC Clayton Update

FROM PAST PRESIDENT JODI PETERSEN

As of mid-September, 635 members have officially opted into the MAC Clayton amenity. This enthusiastic support underscores the strong desire among members to be part of a unique experience that blends the Missouri Athletic Club’s storied tradition with a modern vision of athletics, dining, and social engagement. Thank you for helping bring this vision to life!

COMMUNITY MOMENTUM

The energy around MAC Clayton was on full display at the St. Louis Art Fair, where we made our official community debut. Our members enjoyed an incredible evening on the patio of the Pierre Laclede Center, a wonderful 68-degree night featuring a DJ, hors d'oeuvres by Chef Bart, and a curated wine tasting. Feedback from those in attendance has been overwhelmingly positive, and it is exciting to be creating such memorable experiences together.

DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION PROGRESS

In early September, we completed the final design review in collaboration with HOK. The plans reflect key enhancements including:

F A cigar lounge

F A wine display room

F Dedicated employee support spaces

F Refined interior elements honoring the elegance and history of the MAC while embracing a modern aesthetic

We are now moving forward with permit submissions and approvals through the city of Clayton and Hoffmann Commercial Real Estate to align on the design intent.

Hoffmann continues to be a valued partner and remains on schedule with remediation work on the 14th and 15th floors. They have also shared an enhanced design for the 13th-floor fitness center for review and input.

We’re also pleased to announce Pinnacle as our construction manager for the MAC-sponsored build-out. Their involvement will increase efficiency and integration as we coordinate the final phases of construction. By mid-October, we expect to confirm a projected timeline for remaining improvements.

MEMBERSHIP & STAFFING

With 635 members already on board, we’re now ready to open MAC Clayton membership to prospective members. Referral and promotional messaging are in development. Due to limited capacity, strong demand is anticipated, and a waitlist is likely in the near future.

On the staffing front, we are down to three exceptional finalists for the role of executive chef. All candidates bring deep culinary expertise, including Michelin-star experience, prestigious accolades, and strong club backgrounds. An announcement will be made very soon.

OPENING TIMELINE

The current plan is to pursue a phased opening, beginning with a focus on à la carte dining, followed by events and then fitness amenities. Early 2026 remains the target for full launch. As timelines are finalized, including soft openings and the grand opening, updates will be shared.

NEXT STEPS

Key priorities over the coming weeks include:

F Finalizing the hire of the executive chef

F Confirming construction timelines with Pinnacle

F Securing all necessary permits and approvals

Additionally, Founding Members will be hosted in mid-October for a special thank-you event in the Art Lounge, celebrating their early commitment to this endeavor.

THANK YOU

Your support, energy, and enthusiasm continue to inspire us. Together, we are shaping the next chapter in the Missouri Athletic Club’s legacy through MAC Clayton. We look forward to sharing more updates as this journey progresses. Thank you for being part of it!

The Saint Louis Art Fair brought the energy to Clayton from Sept. 5–7, and the Pierre Laclede Center patio was the perfect place to kick off the celebration. On Sept. 5, festival-goers stopped by to sip wine, savor hors d’oeuvres, and dance to DJ Jenn Asia’s beats. With a new MAC location opening in Clayton in 2026, the evening offered a lively glimpse of what’s to come!

Members Hit the Green at MAC Sports Foundation Golf Tournament

This year’s MAC Sports Foundation Golf Tournament was nothing short of excellent. On Aug. 25, the Missouri Athletic Club held the annual tournament at Norwood Hills Country Club. It was a perfect day for golf, complete with a delicious lunch before the tournament commenced, and followed by a dinner and

auction to close out the day. Once again, the event this year was sold out, and fundraising efforts remain solid. Over $30,000 was raised from the tournament, and $59,000 was raised to go towards an Art Lounge bar project. The MAC is grateful to all who participated in another fantastic tournament!

CRAFTING

FOR LIFE'S BIGGEST EVENTS

Perfect Moments

From weddings to anniversaries, reunions to corporate celebrations, the Missouri Athletic Club has long been the place where members mark life’s biggest milestones. The MAC’s catering team is at the heart of it all, ensuring every special occasion becomes an unforgettable memory. Few families know this better than Past President Mark Belew and his wife, Debbie.

The Belews have been MAC members for decades, hosting countless gatherings in the Club’s elegant spaces, including two of their daughters’ wedding receptions, Mark’s Lutheran North High School 50-year reunion, and Redbird Carriers’ Christmas parties. Most recently, on Aug. 29, they celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary with family and friends in the newly renovated Missouri Room.

“The night was perfect! Everyone was so impressed with the class event that we knew it would be,” Belew said. “The reviews have been coming in like crazy with all in awe of what the MAC catering team put together for us.”

The anniversary was one of the first events to take place in the refreshed Missouri Room. The updates blend modern sophistication with the Club’s historic charm. Guests arriving on the 2nd Floor now step across new carpet in the grand staircase foyer, where textured wallpaper and gold chandeliers set an inviting tone. Inside the ballroom, ornate white wall coverings, deep blue carpeting, and sleek new sconces create a stunning backdrop for dinner and dancing. The result is a space that feels both timeless and renewed, perfectly suited for unforgettable celebrations.

For the Belews, though, it isn’t just the beauty of the space that keeps them coming back. It’s the people. “The MAC is first class, top to bottom,” Belew said, noting the catering team’s professionalism, attention to detail, and impeccable service. In fact, the family already has two more celebrations on the calendar: Redbird Carriers’ Christmas party and their granddaughter’s wedding reception.

They’re not alone. Each year, the Club hosts 40 to 50 weddings in the Missouri Room, in addition to reunions, anniversaries, holiday parties, and corporate gatherings. With in-house food and beverage led by Executive Chef Bart Philipps and exquisite custom cakes crafted by Pastry Chef Katie Acker, couples and families enjoy a one-stop shop for planning. The Club also provides details such as linens, candle votives, and table numbers, ensuring a seamless experience from start to finish.

Many members point to the convenience of hosting their entire celebration at the Club. Evan and Amy Sullivan, who were married at St. Francis Xavier College Church in 2021, recalled how helpful it was to have hotel rooms available onsite when their rainy wedding day required them to take a moment to dry off before the reception.

“We didn’t hire a wedding planner. Looking back, maybe we should have for the other parts of the day, but once we walked into the MAC doors, it was seamless,” Amy said.

Christian and Lindsey Burns shared a similar story. Married at the MAC in 2022, the Burnses worked closely with Director of Catering Courtney Hake to plan their day.

“Courtney was always quick to respond. Planning a wedding is a lot of work, but she made it feel easy,” Lindsey said.

For Steve and Mary Merlo, the MAC has become part of their family tradition. Although they didn’t hold their own wedding at the Club, three of their daughters have.

“MAC took care of everything. Once we knew it was in the hands of the MAC, we knew that everything would be taken care of and wonderful,” Mary said.

From start to finish, the catering team goes beyond food and décor to provide members with peace of mind and memories that last a lifetime. Whether it’s a wedding, anniversary, reunion, or corporate celebration, the MAC’s spaces and staff provide a backdrop for moments members will treasure forever.

On Oct. 9, John Slater pilots the Book Club as we take flight with “The Wright Brothers” by David McCullough.

On Dec. 17, 1903, at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, Wilbur and Orville Wright's Wright Flyer became the first powered, heavier-than-air machine to achieve controlled, sustained flight with a pilot aboard. The Age of Flight had begun. How did they do it? And why? David McCullough tells the extraordinary and truly American story of the two brothers who changed the world.

Sons of an itinerant preacher and a mother who died young, Wilbur and Orville Wright grew up on a small side street in Dayton, Ohio, in a house that lacked indoor plumbing and electricity but was filled with books and a love of learning. The brothers ran a bicycle shop that allowed them to earn enough money to pursue their mission in life: flight. In the 1890s flying was beginning to advance, but there were major technical challenges the Wrights were determined to solve. They traveled to North Carolina's remote Outer Banks to test their plane under three indispensable conditions: constant winds, soft surfaces for landings, and privacy.

In this revelatory book, master historian David McCullough draws on nearly 1,000 letters of family correspondence plus diaries, notebooks, and family scrapbooks in the Library of Congress to tell the full

story of the Wright brothers and their heroic achievement.

On Nov. 13, Jane Molden guides us through the novel “Lucky” by Jane Smiley.

Before Jodie Rattler became a star, she was a girl growing up in St. Louis. One day in 1955, when she was just six years old, her uncle Drew took her to the racetrack, where she got lucky—and the roll of two-dollar bills she won has never since left her side. Jodie thrived in the warmth of her extended family. Through a combination of hard work and serendipity, she started a singing career, which catapulted her from St. Louis to New York City, from the English countryside to the tropical beaches of St. Thomas, from Cleveland to Los Angeles and back again.

Jodie comes of age in recording studios, backstage, and on tour, and tries to hold her own in the wake of Janis Joplin, Joan Baez, Judy Collins, and Joni Mitchell. Yet it feels as if something is missing. Rich with the atmosphere of a rapidly changing cultural landscape, shot through with longing and exuberance, romance and rock ’n’ roll, “Lucky” is a story of chance and grit and the glitter of real talent, a colorful portrait of one woman’s journey in search of herself.

MAC Alumna Meg Pruett Returns as Assistant Squash Pro

The Missouri Athletic Club is excited to welcome back alumna Meg Pruett as its new Assistant Squash Pro. Following in the footsteps of her father, a former college player, Meg picked up a racquet as soon as she could hold one.

She first hit the courts at the University Club before joining the MAC, where she trained under Alex Ingham and competed in junior tournaments. At John Burroughs School, Meg honed her game further before continuing her squash career at St. Lawrence University, graduating in May 2025. Even during college breaks, she returned home to coach at the MAC, cementing her strong ties to the Club.

In her new role, Meg will primarily coach children ages 6–11 and elite juniors ages 11–17, while also assisting with adult clinics from beginner to intermediate levels.

Her philosophy on the sport is simple: “Have some fun! It’s one of those sports that people say is addicting. They try it once and then they can’t stop playing it!”

The MAC is proud to have Meg’s passion and expertise back on its courts, inspiring the next generation of squash players.

Vihari Battula

Named Most Improved Junior

A note from MAC Squash Pro Alex Ingham

I still remember Vihari’s very first lesson. He was soft-spoken and always polite. Back then, his swing had a unique windmill shape, and just mentioning the "F" word (fitness) was enough to earn a look!

Vihari has shown real commitment and grit over the years. He consistently shows up and has made huge strides in both his fitness and technique. His backhand is now one of the cleanest and hardest-hitting in town. A real weapon!

He’s beginning to make serious headway in US Squash-rated Silver events, showing that he’s not just a participant, but a real competitor in the mix for titles. Keep training hard, mate — this is just the beginning!

Dembiec Takes the Bronze in Chicago

MAC Squash Juniors competed in a Junior Silver tournament at the University Club of Chicago the weekend of Sept. 13.

Fall Vegetables That Boost Health and Support Weight Loss

Autumn has always been my favorite season of comfort and color – the crisp air, the joy of sweater weather, evenings spent by a bonfire, and long walks surrounded by the beautiful fall leaves. Colorful fall vegetables are also in season, including rutabagas, beets, Brussels sprouts, and butternut squash, each with their own unique benefits. By adding these seasonal vegetables to your meals, you can enjoy the flavors of autumn while nourishing your body with everything it needs to thrive.

RUTABAGA’S: 1/2 C = V (VEGETABLE)

1c = 50 calories / 12g carbs / 4g fiber vs white potato 135 calories / 31g carbs / 3g fiber

Often overlooked, rutabagas make a great alternative for potatoes. They are naturally low in calories and carbs, but have a high fiber content, which satisfies hunger. They are rich in vitamin C, supporting a strong immune system and healthy skin. Their potassium and magnesium content helps regulate blood pressure and muscle health. They also provide antioxidants that fight inflammation and protect against chronic disease.

Rutabagas can be roasted, mashed, or added to soups and stews. Peel, cube and place in air fryer on 400°F for about 20 minutes and dip them with Organic Annie’s ketchup – my favorite snack!

BEETS: 1/2 C = V (VEGETABLE)

Beets are naturally low in calories which makes them an excellent choice for weight management. Their natural nitrates help improve blood flow, lower blood pressure, and boost exercise endurance. Beets are also rich in folate for energy and red blood cell health, as well as betalain. Betalains are

potent antioxidants that have been shown to reduce inflammation throughout the body, which may help conditions such as arthritis, asthma, and obesity and support liver function.

Beets can be roasted, blended into soups, or added to salads. I like to add roasted beets to my cottage cheese.

BRUSSELS SPROUTS: 2/3 C = V (VEGETABLE)

Brussels sprouts may be small, but they’re packed with nutrition. Its high fiber content promotes fullness and healthy digestion, a smart addition to my weight-loss plan. Brussels sprouts are also an excellent source of vitamin K, which is great for strong bones, as well as vitamin C for immune defense. Like other cruciferous vegetables, Brussels sprouts are rich in compounds such as sulforaphane, which may help reduce inflammation.

Brussels sprouts are great roasted until caramelized, shredded into salads or steamed for a side dish.

BUTTERNUT SQUASH: 1/2 C = (VEGETABLE)

1c = 80 calories / 22g carbs / 7g fiber vs sweet potato 180 calories / 41g carbs / 7g fiber

Butternut squash is low in calories and high in fiber, which helps to keep you full while supporting digestive health and weight control. Its vibrant orange flesh is loaded with beta-carotene, which is a powerful antioxidant that supports vision, immunity, and skin health. Butternut squash also provides potassium to regulate blood pressure and lutein and zeaxanthin to protect eye health.

Butternut squash can be roasted, puréed into soups, or used as a substitute for sweet potatoes.

MAGGIE’S HARVEST HASH

1c = VV (2 Vegetables)

INGREDIENTS

F 1 medium rutabaga, peeled and cut into 1-inch cubes

F 2 medium beets, peeled and cut into wedges

F 2 cups Brussels sprouts, trimmed and halved

F 2 cups butternut squash, peeled and cubed

F 1 tsp Morton’s Lite salt & 1/2 tsp black pepper

F 1 tsp garlic powder

F 1 tsp fresh thyme leaves (or 1/2 tsp dried thyme)

For the glaze:

F 2 Tbsp balsamic vinegar

F 1 Tbsp honey

F 1 tsp Dijon mustard

INSTRUCTIONS

Spread evenly on the baking sheet in a single layer. Roast for 35–40 minutes, stirring halfway, until vegetables are tender and lightly caramelized. In a small bowl, whisk together balsamic vinegar, maple syrup, and Dijon mustard. Drizzle the glaze over the roasted vegetables, toss gently, and return to the oven for 5 more minutes.

Ashley Caster is Feeling Strong Inside and Out with Help from Personal Training with the MAC’s Natalie Jacobs

A testimonial from Ashley Caster

Now, I am feeling better than ever about my life, career, and myself. But rewind to January 2023, I was newly graduated from Indiana University and diving into nursing school. This is when my health journey really began.

Growing up, the MAC was more than just a gym. It was where we went to have a good time with friends! We swam, had tennis lessons, went to summer camp, enjoyed Friday night buffets, and played in the gym. I loved being here, but I never envisioned myself working out regularly. That changed when my mom suggested we try it together, three times a week with a trainer. I was hesitant, unsure if I was ready.

At that point, I carried 50 extra pounds from my time in Indiana, feeling out of shape and lacking confidence. My motivation? A desire to be stronger, feel better, and reclaim my self-esteem. Thanks to my incredible team of family, friends, and especially my MAC trainer, Natalie Jacobs, the impossible became possible.

Initially, I refused to face the mirror in

the gym, rushing past to avoid seeing my reflection. I knew I was out of shape, but I didn’t fully acknowledge it. It wasn’t until I started working out consistently that I asked myself: Who am I doing this for? Myself? My mom? Natalie, who was investing in my progress?

Natalie introduced me to exercises I once thought impossible. I’d stare at her, mouth agape, thinking, “There’s no way I can do that.” But gradually, I realized it wasn’t just about dropping pounds or lifting heavier, though those were part of it. I began to recognize my strength, both muscular and mental. Seeing my reflection and feeling pride in my progress became a powerful turning point.

Meanwhile, Paul Helfrich, the West Clubhouse Fitness Manager, helped me tackle my nutrition. His plan cut my calories, and suddenly I was counting macros, reading cookbooks, and learning how food could fuel my progress. It was overwhelming at first, but I soon understood that I wasn’t alone. I had a team pushing me forward, whether I felt ready or not.

Now, two and a half years later, I still train with Natalie three times a week. Our bond has grown to feel like sisterhood. She continues to challenge me, and I continue to stare at her, surprised by what I can accomplish. Today, I can look in the mirror and genuinely feel proud—not just of the physical changes, but of the resilience and confidence I’ve built.

My journey is far from over, but I know one thing for sure: the strength I’ve gained is more than skin-deep. It’s a reminder that with support, determination, and a little bit of courage, transformation is possible for everyone.

Join me. Find your strength. It’s worth every step.
