How can this be possible — more than 330 days have already passed? And now, I find myself writing my final Cherry Diamond article as your president. Wow. To say this year has been rewarding doesn’t begin to describe the experience. It has truly been a privilege and an honor to serve this incredible Club and community.
Coming out of the pandemic, we focused on re-engaging members, stabilizing our financials, and identifying and transitioning a new general manager. Thanks to the leadership of the presidents who preceded me and the commitment of our entire community, we achieved those critical objectives.
Building upon that foundation, my focus this year was to be truly forward-looking and strategic — to support sustainable growth by enhancing our services and offerings and championing the role of members as shareholders. Last June, the Board identified key objectives aligned with our strategic pillars. I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve accomplished together:
F The MAC Clayton amenity is currently in member vote and will soon reach a final decision.
F Master planning for West is well underway. Member focus groups have provided valuable input, and refined options will be reviewed by the Board this summer.
F We continued our journey toward “better” with enhancements at both Clubhouses — fresh flowers, new signage, painting and staining, and increased app-supported security at West.
F The 6th floor Downtown was renovated and has received outstanding reviews and strong usage.
F Ongoing improvements are in progress at the West pool and café, as well as updates to the Missouri Ballroom, hotel, and a new bridal suite Downtown. Additionally, the Board is working with management on a new bar concept for the Art Lounge.
F We also strengthened our golf program by introducing a new amenity option at Norwood Hills Country Club.
F We implemented a message map to streamline and clarify communications across the Club.
F A full review of the bylaws and Club Policy Manual was completed to identify needed updates. A summary and any member-vote items will be shared soon.
F A three-to-five-year strategic plan has been drafted and is currently undergoing committee review, with Board confirmation expected in May.
F We further embraced the MAC Brand Book to ensure consistency and clarity in our messaging.
F We reconstituted a task force focused on safety, security, and outreach to key civic and business leaders.
F We also hired a director of security to ensure continued safety across both Clubhouses.
F We remain on track to surpass $30 million in revenue for the 2025 fiscal year, with member headcount up 48 from last March and year-to-date cash flow more than 40% ahead of last year.
F Capital reserve studies are underway to thoroughly assess our Clubhouses and assets to guide our long-term financial planning.
Along the way, we hosted memorable events, including our most recent conversation with Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe, as well as honoring the top men’s and women’s college basketball players and coaches at the USBWA Awards. Having the legendary Dick Vitale join us was a true highlight! At a VIP luncheon, I was honored to join Banquet Chairman Matt Morris in presenting him with a $20,000 donation from the MAC Sports Foundation benefiting The V Foundation for cancer research — a cause close to his heart.
A number of individuals made this past year so enjoyable and meaningful:
F Chip, Gena, Pam, and the entire MAC team — Your behind-the-scenes work ensured everything — events, meetings, weddings — ran smoothly. You are the engine of this Club.
F Past Presidents — Your wisdom and steady guidance gave me the confidence to lead with clarity and conviction.
F Board of Governors — A heartfelt thank-you to my fellow class members — Tom Dankenbring, Tim Maynard, Gary Sextro, and Jeff Wehmer — and to all three classes, including President-elect Mike Kozeny, Adrian DiBisceglie, Carrie Burggraf, Matt Masiel, Dave Sweeney, Bob Bax, Mark Milton, Peggy Northcott, Jerina Phillips, and Cale Prokopf. Your dedication, insight, and commitment to healthy, purposeful debate ensured we made the best decisions for our members — both current and future.
To all MAC members — thank you. You have been supportive, thoughtful, constructively challenging when needed, and always appreciative. I am deeply grateful.
The future of the MAC is bright. We have continuity in leadership that honors our traditions while embracing the growth and opportunities ahead.
Thank you for the opportunity to serve. This has been one of the most fulfilling experiences of my life. I leave this role proud of what we've accomplished — and even more confident in what’s to come for the MAC.
With gratitude,
The MAC continues to enjoy meaningful momentum at both clubhouses, driven by a string of special events, holidays and sports – the Cardinals, Battlehawks, CITY SC, and a Blues run at the playoffs! We expect this momentum to carry over to the start of the summer and particularly the start of pool season, along with a myriad of children’s camps and activities.
By now, many of you have noticed quite a bit of work taking place at the West Clubhouse. We anticipate in advance of Memorial Day Weekend an updated café and seating area — a space that is envisioned to be available and operating year-round. The pool deck will also feature improvements aimed at elevating the member experience and increasing capacity. Notable changes include new furniture and umbrellas, a designated dining area, enhanced pool bar offerings and extended hours of operation. We look forward to a summer of fun!
On the topic of projects and planning, efforts are continuing with our Master Plan at the West Clubhouse. We intend to announce a survey of all members soon, focused on their experiences. We will then share those findings. The survey will play an integral role in planning for the future. An important and challenging component to this process is anticipating future growth opportunities with amenities and services for the MAC.
We have initiated our renovation plan for the Downtown ballroom and believe the approach for this historic space is going to be incredible. In step with this, we are also adding a bridal suite to our Downtown offering. Please note that there will be no disruption to our schedule of events, as we plan to work around our very active calendar of Club events and private parties.
I am most certainly glad we are highlighting a long-
term member and his family in this month’s edition of the Cherry Diamond. Keith Barket and his wife Ginny have been so supportive and kind to me and my wife Carolyn since arriving at the MAC nearly two years ago. His passion for all things “Downtown” has always resonated with me, and I am most appreciative of his willingness to support the “better” agenda. Please join me in celebrating a member of 47 years, who happens to also enjoy life to the fullest! Read more about him starting on page 16.
On a final note, we are proud to celebrate the incredible efforts of Pam Roth, our retiring CFO. Pam’s 25 years have been centered on engaged service to the Board, the team, and the membership. I have been constantly reminded of her commitment to the MAC – her passion and professionalism for a job that requires her to wear many hats at any given time. Like most private clubs, the MAC has endured some challenges over the years, and we have been fortunate that Pam has been there for us. In my opinion she is the standard for private club CFO’s! Thank you, Pam, for being so supportive of the team over the years and of me in my short time at this amazing Club! We all look forward to your next “chapter” at the Missouri Athletic Club! Read more about Pam's career at the MAC on page 10.
I look forward to seeing you around the Club, and, as always, please let me know if there is anything I or the team can do to enhance your MAC experience!

As a general rule, anyone 73 years of age or older is required to take a Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) from their tax-deferred accounts (IRAs and 401k) by Dec. 31, 2025, and pay taxes on the distribution.
You can make a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) from your IRAs to your favorite charities and avoid taxation.
The MAC Sports Foundation and the MAC Charitable Society for Children are both eligible to receive Qualified Charitable Distributions!
Why not decide right now to save taxes this year and help the MAC Sports Foundation or the Charitable Society for Children at the same time?
A QCD is an excellent tax-saving vehicle, but there are rules to be followed and pitfalls to be avoided.

The Missouri Athletic Club has found that the most effective way to welcome new members is through referrals from current members. Passion for the MAC runs deep, and the Membership Department is committed to supporting those who wish to help shape the Club’s future.
When sharing information about the MAC, it’s helpful to highlight its positive influence, personal involvement in various programs or events, and aspects that may resonate with potential members.
If a friend expresses continued interest in joining, the next step is to contact the Membership Department and provide a personal introduction. Members are also encouraged to serve as one of the two required sponsors to complete the referral process.
These efforts help strengthen the MAC community. Every new member adds to the rich tradition and vibrant future of the Club.
After 25 years of dedicated service to the Missouri Athletic Club, including more than six as Chief Financial Officer, Pam Roth is preparing to retire. Her impact on the Club’s financial strength, her mentorship, and her deep commitment to the MAC community have left a lasting legacy. As she reflects on her time at the Club, Pam shares memorable moments, lessons learned, and what she’s looking forward to in retirement.
When did you start working at the Club? What was your position? When did you become CFO?
Larry Absheer hired me in April 2000 as the Club’s Accounting Manager. Over the years I became much more involved in cash flow management, reporting, and presenting financial information to committees, the Board, members, and staff. This led to my promotion to Director of Accounting and Financial Reporting in 2016, and the plan to prepare me for the eventual transition to the role of Chief Financial Officer. This transition came in January 2019 as Larry stepped into a new role, and I moved into the CFO position.
What have these past 25 years meant to you?
These past 25 years have been filled with meaningful milestones that have shaped both my career and personal life. From day one, having a mentor like Larry was a true gift. His guidance and support helped prepare me for the role of CFO, and I’m forever grateful. Joining the Hospitality Financial and Technology Professionals (HFTP) organization, thanks to his encouragement, connected me
with industry peers and led to earning my Certified Hospitality Accountant Executive (CHAE) designation, which I’ve proudly maintained for 20 years. The MAC has also enriched my family life. My husband has formed lasting connections here, and both of my sons have worked at the Club, gaining valuable experience.
What have you enjoyed most about working at the MAC these past 25 years?
The most exciting part of my position is negotiating leases and contracts, and developing policies and procedures –just kidding (making sure you’re paying attention)! While these are important aspects of my responsibilities, they are not the most stimulating. What I’ve enjoyed most is the variety of projects I’ve had the opportunity to work on. From phasing out the Club’s pension plan to developing financial strategies during COVID and creating financial proformas for a potential Clayton location, there has always been something new to take on. The constant change and challenge have kept the work interesting and engaging.
What are you going to miss most about the MAC?
I’ll miss spending my days in this beautiful, historic building and everything the MAC represents. Most of all, I’ll miss the people. I’ve been fortunate to work with many Board and committee members who have influenced my professional growth. Learning from three different General Managers and building strong relationships with so many employees has been incredibly rewarding. Those connections are what I’ll miss the most.
What are you looking forward to in retirement?
Number one: spending more time with my husband, enjoying life! My last official day as CFO is May 31, 2025, however, I will be at the Club a few days each week to help with the transition and work on special projects for a few months. See you around the Club!

Each year, the Missouri Athletic Club honors four outstanding women from the St. Louis region and one Rising Star for their vision and mentorship in business, civic and philanthropic endeavors. In 2025, the MAC will continue the tradition of honoring women who are making a lasting impact on our community. To nominate a woman for these prestigious awards, please review and complete the Nomination Form by 5 p.m. on May 16. The form can be found online at mac-stl.org/WOD. Email the completed form to Katie Maurer at kmaurer@mac-stl.org or mail to: Missouri Athletic Club, 405 Washington Avenue, St. Louis, MO 63102.
Nominations are welcome from the community, and neither the Nominator nor the Nominee need to be an MAC member!
I want to thank all the staff and members I’ve met so far for such a warm welcome.
I truly appreciate the support as I settle into my new role.
This position was created to enhance the Club’s existing security framework while bringing a forwardthinking approach to ensure the ongoing safety of members and staff. It reflects the Club’s commitment to adapting to evolving needs and maintaining a secure environment.
I recently retired after 24 years in law enforcement, where I held the rank of sergeant. Throughout my career, I served in various leadership roles requiring strategic oversight and operational discipline. I began as a deputy/jailer, then moved into patrol, and later oversaw courthouse operations, including inmate transportation, civil processes, and courtroom staffing.
In 2015, I founded a private security company that provides
armed services, surveillance, investigations, and consulting for both private and corporate clients.
I’m currently developing a comprehensive plan to strengthen communication, enhance surveillance coverage, and improve safety protocols across the MAC. This includes evaluating our camera systems, updating technology, and reviewing emergency response procedures. Regarding Life Safety protocols, I am ensuring existing systems are effective, making necessary adjustments where gaps are identified. To expand our internal knowledge base, staff training and operational improvements are upcoming.
Thank you again for the warm welcome. I look forward to getting to know more of you around the Club.

Giving back to organizations of which I belong is very important to me, having served on numerous boards, commissions, and committees. Providing ideas, listening to others’ input, and working as a team on solutions is vital to the success of any organization Serving on MAC Committees over the past two decades has provided me with considerable knowledge of the Club, and of how members’ experiences are important to the future of the club.
As new members in 1997, Celeste and I held our wedding reception at the MAC and we continue to value the MAC, its traditions, and the distinct atmosphere at each club location. Time spent at both clubhouses is enjoyable, as is organizing Wine Society events at both clubhouses. If elected, I will help ensure that our Club traditions are honored; dues are spent efficiently; financial security is maintained; and that our Club remains a vibrant place for members to have their best experiences possible. I would appreciate your consideration and vote for the MAC Board of Governors. Thank you.
A LIFE BUILT AT THE MAC
A real estate tycoon, devoted husband, proud father and grandfather, longtime MAC member, and faithful member of the 0600 Club on the 5th Floor – all titles Keith Barket holds with pride. A loyal presence at the Downtown Clubhouse, Barket has been part of the Missouri Athletic Club since 1978.
“I always saw the MAC as a symbol of success,” Barket said. “Most of the guys I know that are successful businessmen are members of the MAC, and I wanted to be with them.”
Known in the community as “Downtown Keith” thanks to his prominent role in local real estate, Barket once owned or controlled nearly 2 million square feet of property in downtown St. Louis – including the Arcade and Ambassador Buildings, along with several warehouses and parking lots. Today, most of his business is out of town.
Now semi-retired, he’s had more time to devote to MAC projects. “This is my home. Where I live is my vacation home,” he reflected warmly.
He contributed to the renovation of the 6th Floor, an upgrade he describes as "fabulous," and continued his generosity by funding and curating the painting of the Downtown Clubhouse lobby ceiling. Thanks to Barket and Pisani Painting Company, the ceiling now shines with elegant gold-accented molding. Pisani is slated to return soon to refresh the Art Lounge ceiling as well. Next on Barket’s list is a new fireplace for the Downtown Clubhouse lobby. The custom feature will be 50 inches by 51.5 inches and will be installed on the east wall, directly across from the Preservation Gallery.
“With what the MAC has given me, it’s time for me to give back,” Barket said with a laugh. “I’ve probably used $100,000 worth of shaving cream, soap and colognes over the years.”
Barket’s daily routine begins at the Downtown Clubhouse at 4:30 a.m. He relaxes in the lobby for 30 minutes before taking the elevator to the 5th Floor when it opens at 5 a.m. He brings the newspapers, gets in a workout while watching the news, and is soon joined by friends at 6 a.m. – members of what they call the 0600 Club. Afterward, Barket walks to his office at 8th and Olive, staying until about noon. Then, he returns to the Club for lunch at the Sportsman’s Club.
“The ambiance is everything,” he said of the Downtown Clubhouse, where he spends much of his day.
Barket and his wife, Virginia – known affectionately as Ginny or Doll – have been married for 64 years. They met in the eighth grade and went on to raise three children: two sons and a daughter. Their eight grandchildren are spread across New York City, Chicago, and St. Louis. One granddaughter, Danielle, even had her wedding reception at the MAC in 2024.
The Barket family has spent many holidays at the Club over the years. In the past, Keith and Ginny rang in the new year at the Downtown Clubhouse. These days, they enjoy celebrating Easter, Father’s Day, Christmas, and more at the MAC. Barket can also be found dining in his favorite dinner spot, the Rendezvous Room in the Jack Buck Grille.
“The MAC is so special to me,” Barket said. “It has shaped my life and my friendships. I have so many memories here. Too numerous to mention, but all good.”

On May 8, the Book Club returns to history as they discuss “The Happiest Man on Earth” by Eddie Jaku, under the direction of Deborah Besserman.
Born into a Jewish family in Leipzig, Germany, Eddie Jaku was a teenager when his world was turned upside down. On Nov. 9, 1938, during the terrifying violence of Kristallnacht, the Night of Broken Glass, Eddie was beaten by SS thugs, arrested, and sent to a concentration camp with thousands of other Jews across Germany. Every day of the next seven years of his life, Eddie faced unimaginable horrors in Buchenwald, Auschwitz, and finally on a forced death march during the Third Reich’s final days. The Nazis took everything from Eddie—his family, his friends, and his country. But they did not break his spirit. Against unbelievable odds, Eddie found the will to survive. Overwhelmingly grateful, he made a promise: he would smile every day in thanks for the precious gift he was given and to honor the six million Jews murdered by Hitler. Today, at 100 years of age, despite all he suffered, Eddie calls himself the “happiest man on earth.” In his remarkable memoir, this born storyteller shares his wisdom and reflects on how he has led his best possible life, talking warmly and openly about the power of gratitude, tolerance, and kindness. Filled with his insights on friendship, family, health, ethics, love, and hatred, and the simple beliefs that have shaped him, “The Happiest Man on Earth” offers timeless lessons for readers of all ages.
On June 12, Leslee Zimmer will lead a discussion on “North Woods” by David Mason.
When two young lovers abscond from a Puritan colony, little do they know their humble cabin in the woods will become the home of an extraordinary succession of human and nonhuman characters alike. An English soldier, destined for glory, abandons the battlefields of the New World to devote himself to growing apples. A pair of spinster twins navigate war and famine, envy and desire. A crime reporter unearths an ancient mass grave, only to discover that the earth refused to give up its secrets. A lovelorn painter, a sinister con man, a stalking panther, a lusty beetle; as the inhabitants confront the wonder and mystery around them, they begin to realize that the dark, raucous, beautiful past is very much alive.
This inventive novel from Pulitzer Prize finalist Daniel Mason brims with love and madness, humor and hope. Following the cycles of history, nature, and even language, “North Woods” shows the myriad, magical ways in which we’re connected to our environment, to history, and to one another.

The Military History Club welcomes a return Zoom appearance by Dr. Christian Keller who will speak on Robert E. Lee as a military theorist. Robert E. Lee has come under a great deal of revised scrutiny over recent years. Was he a superb military leader or just lucky? Was he a traitor or a reluctant hero? What should his legacy be? In this presentation, based on new archival evidence, Dr. Keller will make the case that the title of “military theorist” should be added to Lee’s many descriptors, regardless of how one interprets him as a man or general.
Since 2011, Dr. Keller has been a professor of history in the
Department of National Security and Strategy at the United States Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, where he teaches courses for senior leaders on the theory of war and strategy, national security policy, and the American Civil War. In 2017, he was named the General Dwight D. Eisenhower Chair of National Security, and in 2019 he became the Director of Military History Program for the school.

The West Culinary Team is elevating their offerings with an exciting new initiative — a culinary garden! West server Kim Wirch enthusiastically stepped up to lead the project, drawing on her gardening expertise developed outside of work. Thanks to her efforts, the West outdoor space is being transformed into a vibrant haven of fresh vegetables, herbs, edible flowers, and more.
Though the garden is still in its early stages, Chef Jess and Kim hope to involve MAC kids in future educational programs to teach
where food comes from and highlight the many benefits of plants.
“There’s so much that one plant can do,” Kim shares. If the Club secures grant funding, Kim will be the instructor of the educational programming.
The project is ongoing, with plans to expand the seasonal produce and herbs. Chef Jess also hopes to introduce a monthly vegetarian dish that showcases ingredients harvested from the garden.
For Kim, the most rewarding part is sharing the experience with others. “It just brings me so much joy,” she reflects warmly. Be sure to check out the garden on your next visit to West — you might spot something delicious growing!

Golf becomes more popular every year — and golfers are more aware than ever that it is important to develop and maintain their golf fitness. The Golf Performance Program at SSM Health Physical Therapy can help you recover from a golf injury, assist you in return-to-sport and design a personalized golf fitness program.
The Injuries:
Golfers’ injuries are often caused by a lack of conditioning, flexibility or strength. Our Golf Performance Program helps you improve in these areas, leading to better joint support, improved dynamic balance, decreased pain and improved ability for proper swing mechanics.
Neck – Proper rotation techniques keep the head in a neutral position as the body coils into the back swing.
Shoulders – Upper body flexibility improves back swing.
Wrists – Flexible wrists allow for a hinge action to occur, meaning more power at impact and reduced strain on elbow and shoulder.
Lower Back – Increasing core stabilization strength and upper back mobility may decrease strain on the lower back.
Hips – Strong, flexible hips may decrease stress on the low back, prevent back pain/ injury and increase power.
Gluteal and Quad Muscles –
Strengthening these muscles may improve posture and create consistency in the swing path.
Physical Therapy Can Help
SSM Health Physical Therapy focuses on conditioning, strengthening, flexibility and the biomechanics of the golf swing:
• Balance
• Mobility/flexibility
• Stabilization/Strength
While all our physical therapists can help rehabilitate injuries, our Golf Performance Program locations offer our three-part program for golfers which includes:
Analysis: We perform a physical screen to assess your strength, mobility, balance and mechanics and identify what may be impacting your swing mechanics or causing you pain.
Education: We teach proper mechanics to improve overall conditioning, strength, flexibility and efficiency of movement.
Exercise: We create a customized exercise routine to address weaknesses and impairments. Some of our locations offer Titleist Performance
Institute (TPI) Certified therapists and can offer K-Vest™ 3D systems for serious golfers who want to take their game to the next level by pro-actively identifying and correcting deficits.

Where and when is check-in and drop-off?
Check-in is at 9 a.m. every camp morning. Camp coordinators can be found near the stairwell down to the gym. Here, they will sign-in campers for the day and answer any parent questions. Next, parents can proceed down to the gym to drop off their child.
What should my child bring with them to camp?
Campers should come to camp in comfortable clothes and shoes for playing and physical activity. We recommend campers wear socks with closed-toed shoes and only bring flip-flops for the pool.
Campers can bring an optional morning snack and afternoon snack. We recommend campers bring a water bottle with them each day.
Afternoon Campers will go to the pool each day and will need to bring a swimsuit and towel. Optional items for them to bring to the pool are sunscreen and flip-flops.

What will my child do each day at camp?
Campers get to experience the best of West! Mornings at camp usually include a tennis clinic, games with camp staff in the gym and time in the Youth Activity Room. After lunch, campers will get to spend their afternoons swimming in the pool, watching movies and doing crafts in the Youth Classroom, as well as occasional squash clinics, yoga classes, outdoor games and so much more!
Where and when is pick-up?
Pick-up is every afternoon at 4 p.m. in the gym. Parents or guardians will check children out with camp staff.
Camp begins on Tuesday, May 27 this year. We cannot wait for the fun to begin! Please send any additional questions to either Joy Holdmeier at jholdmeier@mac-stl.org or Sydney Gorman at sgorman@mac-stl.org.
