appy 249th Birthday, America! As we find ourselves in the heart of summer at the MAC, I am reminded of the enduring spirit that defines our nation. Resilience, unity, and the pursuit of something greater than ourselves. What does the Fourth of July mean to me? It’s a celebration of freedom, yes, but also of community, legacy, and the responsibility we each carry to contribute to something lasting. Just as our country was built on bold vision and shared purpose, so too has the MAC as it has grown and thrived through generations of dedicated members. This month, as we honor America’s founding, we also celebrate the vibrant community we’ve built together here at the MAC.
One of the true highlights of the past month was our annual 50-Year Member Dinner which was an evening filled with warmth, reflection, and deep appreciation. The Board gathered to honor those members who have dedicated half a century or more to the MAC, and their stories were nothing short of inspiring. From tales of lifelong friendships forged on the basketball court to memories of family traditions rooted in the Club’s dining rooms, the night was a moving tribute to the legacy and loyalty that define the MAC. It was a privilege to personally thank each honoree for their decades of commitment, and I extend my heartfelt gratitude to our staff who made the evening so special. The dinner served as a beautiful reminder that our Club's foundation is built on the strength of its people.
The Missouri Athletic Club thrives thanks to the dedication and leadership of countless member volunteers who contribute their time and expertise across many areas. Last month, our key standing committees (Audit, Finance, Governance, Membership, and Planning) officially kicked off the new Board year with a strong mix of returning and new members. We are deeply grateful for their continued service and commitment to the Club. Their involvement is vital to the MAC’s ongoing success, and we simply couldn’t operate without their valuable contributions.
Many of you have noticed the recent improvements to the Cafe Cherry Diamond, which reflect our continued commitment to enhancing the member experience. The expanded seating
layout, refreshed lighting, and thoughtful menu enhancements have transformed the space into a brighter, more welcoming environment that’s perfect for a morning coffee, lunch with friends while enjoying the pool, or simply a relaxing afternoon break. I’d also like to take a moment to recognize the Cafe’s Food and Beverage Manager Erica Karsznia and our outstanding pool staff, who have been doing a fantastic job keeping everything running smoothly this summer. If you haven’t had a chance to stop by recently, I encourage you to visit and enjoy the new atmosphere for yourself.
The Master Planning process for the West Clubhouse is progressing with great energy and focus. Our planning team, in partnership with consultants Peacock + Lewis, has been diligently analyzing feedback from the recent member survey to help shape a vision that meets the evolving needs of our members both today and into the future. I look forward to sharing more detailed plans with you in the coming months.
Thank you to everyone who took the time to complete the survey; your input has provided invaluable guidance as we work to enhance the overall member experience.
In closing, July is a month to celebrate the MAC’s legacy while staying focused on continued progress. Whether you’re enjoying the camaraderie of the dining room, participating in summer programming, or simply enjoying the unique atmosphere of our Club, I hope you take pride in being a part of something special.
On behalf of the Board and leadership team, thank you for your continued support. Enjoy your summer, and I look forward to seeing you around the Club.

The MAC is in the heat of summer as our most beloved warm-weather traditions are in full swing: the West Clubhouse pool, swim team activities, and golf. Congratulations to our dedicated team for setting the stage for success across all areas, from aquatics to dining. We welcome member feedback and look forward to continuing to enhance your summer experience.

Operationally, management continues to explore opportunities to elevate the member experience and celebrate what makes the MAC a world-class private club. While exciting updates regarding the MAC Clayton amenity are on the horizon, we remain equally focused on planning efforts at both the Downtown and West Clubhouses. Improvements are taking place across the board, and I’m confident members will discover even more ways to enjoy all the Club has to offer. As always, food and beverage remains at the forefront of our ongoing enhancement plans.
Speaking of Clayton, I’m pleased to welcome the first two key management additions who will help launch the MAC Clayton experience. Greg Gerber will serve as Director of Operations, and his efforts are already underway. Greg brings a wealth of hospitality experience to the MAC team, having most recently served as General Manager of the Ritz-Carlton’s Casa Don Alfonso restaurant. Prior to that, he was Assistant General Manager at the Saint Louis Club. Greg and his wife of 25 years, Hani, live in Ellisville with their two children: Ayaan, 10, and Ayla, 8. You can expect to see Greg at both the Downtown and West Clubhouses in the coming weeks as he gets to know members and becomes immersed in MAC culture.
Additionally, Morgan Smith joined the team in May and is already actively involved in membership operations. She will transition to MAC Clayton and serve as the primary membership contact at that location. Morgan lives in Belleville with her 4-year-old daughter Nova.
Looking ahead, August marks the tenth annual Foundations Month for the MAC. Throughout the month, members have the opportunity to contribute to the MAC Sports Foundation and its Charitable Society for Children by simply adding a donation to your chit when dining at the Club. Your generous support goes a long way in helping the MAC serve its members and the St. Louis community.
A special thank you to all members for your support. I look forward to seeing you around the club!

On April 16, Mike Hackett became the youngest past president to reach 50 years of Missouri Athletic Club membership. It’s a milestone that began in 1975 when he joined the Club at just 16 years old.
At the time, no one in Hackett’s family was a member, but his father, Captain of the St. Louis Police Department’s Central District, recognized the MAC as a hub for the city’s business leaders. “This is the Club that is the center of business for the downtown St. Louis area,” Hackett recalled his father saying. Encouraged by that advice, he joined the Club just before beginning his studies at Saint Louis University.
Sponsored by his father’s friend, Gene Frederic, Hackett quickly immersed himself in MAC life. As a SLU baseball player, he was immediately drawn to the action on the Downtown Clubhouse’s 5th Floor. During the off-season, he joined the Club’s basketball league, playing alongside former St. Louis Cardinals football players and even MLB talent, including Jim Bakken, Andy Van Slyke, Joe Buck, and Ricky Horton. To this day, Hackett still hits the court in the Over-40 Basketball League.
Throughout his 50 years of membership, Hackett has forged lasting friendships across generations. Among those he counts as close friends are Kevin Cantwell, John Costello, Peter Dunne, Gary Sextro, Dave Stukenberg, and Carl Winters.
After starting his career at Anheuser-Busch, Hackett went on to become CEO of Hackett Security, a leader in security systems integration. The MAC remained constant through it all. He married his wife, Beth, at the Club in 1986 and has celebrated countless holidays there with their sons, Charlie and James, who are now members themselves.
Hackett served on the Board of Governors from 2003 to 2006, holding the position of president during his final year. He encourages all members to get involved in governance or committee service.
“It exposes you to the membership, and the membership is what’s special about the Club,” Hackett said.
He credits his long-standing membership to the Club’s ability to evolve and stay relevant. From Past President Gary Wideman’s leadership in developing the West Clubhouse to Past President Jodi Petersen’s instrumental role in launching MAC Clayton, Hackett sees a strong future built on the Club’s solid foundation.
“The Club is an important part of my life,” Hackett reflected. “I look forward to being a member for many more years to come.”
On May 26, Joan Sheehan reached a 70-year membership milestone at the Club! The MAC was honored to host Joan and her family for a celebratory luncheon at the West Clubhouse on June 11, recognizing this incredible achievement. The Club is continuously grateful for the dedication and unwavering support of its members. Joan joins an esteemed group of fellow members who share this achievement. Congratulations, Joan!
On Tuesday, June 17, the Missouri Athletic Club hosted the annual 50-Year Member Dinner at the Downtown Clubhouse, celebrating the Club’s exceptional milestone members. Past and current MAC leaders gathered in the Missouri Room to honor 50Year, 70-Year and 150 Club inductees. To qualify for the MAC 150 Club, the sum
of a member’s age plus the number of years they have been a member must equal at least 150. This challenging feat is achieved by only the most tenured members and is recognized with a symbolic coin. Those who have achieved 50 years of membership receive a commemorative pin, symbolizing their long-lasting dedication to the MAC.
It was a wonderful evening of celebration, featuring a delicious dinner prepared by the Downtown Culinary Team. Following the meal, MAC President Mike Kozeny addressed the crowd and announced the newest milestone members. The Club is continuously grateful for the dedication and loyalty of its longest tenured members!

Each year, the Missouri Athletic Club honors outstanding women from the St. Louis region and one Rising Star for their vision and mentorship in business, civic, and philanthropic endeavors. This year, the MAC proudly continues its tradition of honoring women who are making a meaningful impact in our community.
In May 2025, Karen M. Goering retired from the Missouri Historical Society after 45 years. As managing director of administration and operations, Goering served as the institution’s chief operating officer and held many roles during her tenure. Goering oversaw MHS’s incorporation into the ZMD, the renovation of the Library & Research Center, the expansion of the History Museum, and the restoration of Soldiers Memorial.
Always active in the St. Louis community, she has long supported countless organizations. Goering received a B.A. in political science from Wichita State University and an M.A. in urban studies from Washington University.
Cynthia Kirkpatrick serves as a Senior Advisor on Moneta Group’s distinguished CWJ team. Her years of experience, underpinned by CFP® and CPA credentials along with degrees in accounting and communications, allows her to deliver exceptional financial guidance to clients. Kirkpatrick is also the host of the She Lift Project Podcast, celebrating women’s professional achievements and stories of success.
A devoted wife and mother of three, her impact extends throughout St. Louis through her visionary leadership, volunteer efforts, mentorship, and unwavering commitment to empowering others. Her wisdom and generosity continue to drive positive change across her community.
Elizabeth Shocklee is an attorney and managing partner of Evans & Dixon, a law firm of over 100 attorneys in ten offices, headquartered in Downtown St. Louis. A graduate of the University of Missouri and Saint Louis University School of Law, Shocklee has assumed increasing responsibilities during her 29 years at Evans & Dixon.
Kirkpatrick and her siblings founded Our MOM, a foundation supporting melanoma research of which she is Board Chair and established a scholarship at CBC. She also serves on the board of the ALS Association of St. Louis.
Laura Storm is the Co-Founder and Executive Director of Foster Together, a St. Louis area nonprofit serving children and families impacted by foster care. What began in her home in 2018 has grown into a thriving organization that now supports over 1,000 children each year with free essentials like clothing, baby gear, school supplies, and new car seats and beds.
In 2021, the Foster Together boutique opened in Arnold, Mo., expanding access to vital necessities. With over 5,000 children impacted through free resources, support groups, classes, and events, Storm’s visionary leadership has made Foster Together a lifeline for foster, kinship, and adoptive families across the region.

The Military History Club welcomes Nathan Canestaro for a virtual presentation about his book “The Mighty Moo: The USS Cowpens and Her Epic World War II Journey from Jinx Ship to the Navy’s First Carrier into Tokyo Bay.”
This gripping account follows the story of a scrappy World War II aircraft carrier and her untested crew. Despite being a ship the Navy initially didn’t want—with a nearly scapegoated captain, self-trained pilots and inexperienced sailors—the Cowpens beat the odds to earn 12 battle stars in the Pacific Theater.
The Cowpens and her crew fought in nearly every major carrier operation from 1943 to 1945, including the Battles of the Philippine Sea and Leyte Gulf. They
endured a deadly typhoon that nearly capsized the ship, and at war’s end, the Cowpens was the only U.S. aircraft carrier present in Tokyo Bay to witness the Japanese surrender.
Canestaro is a professional intelligence officer whose research on his grandfather’s WWII service inspired a decade-long effort to uncover the story of the Cowpens. Currently on assigned to the National Intelligence Council, he has more than 25 years of experience writing about military operations for U.S. government policymakers.

The July 10 Book Club meeting will spotlight a former MAC member, as Helen McGlynn leads a discussion on “Harry Truman’s Excellent Adventure” by Michael Algeo.
On June 19, 1953, Harry Truman packed the trunk of his Chrysler New Yorker and did something no other former president has done before or since — he hit the road without Secret Service protection, traveling press, or fanfare. Accompanied by his wife, Bess, Truman embarked on a low-key road trip to visit old friends, catch a Broadway show, and celebrate their wedding anniversary in the Big Apple — all while hoping to remain under the radar.
Algeo’s lively narrative details how that plan hilariously unraveled. From eager teenagers at a Future Homemakers of America convention to unsuspecting waiters and one overly diligent Pennsylvania state trooper, Truman’s cover was blown at every turn. This cross-country story will leave readers with a renewed appreciation for America’s last “citizen president.”
On Aug. 14, Marie Salter will lead the group in exploring “All the Colors of the Dark” by Chris Whitaker, a suspenseful novel set in Missouri.
The year is 1975. The Vietnam War is ending, Muhammad Ali is fighting Joe Frazier, and in the small town of Monta Clare, Missouri, girls are disappearing. When the daughter of a wealthy family is targeted, an unlikely hero named Patch steps in — changing the course of many lives. What unfolds is part mystery, part love story, and entirely unforgettable, as Whitaker examines what can be found in both the shadows of obsession and the blinding light of hope.

FAIRLIFE MILK
6 to 8 oz = D (Dairy)
Fairlife is not your average milk. It is ultrafiltered, meaning it packs in more protein (13g vs. 8g) and less sugar (6g vs. 12g) than traditional cow milk. It’s also lactosefree — perfect for those with lactose intolerance who still want the taste and nutrition of dairy. Plus, Fairlife is rich in calcium and has a longer shelf life when unopened. While it may cost a bit more, many find the nutritional payoff is worth the price.
OAT MILK
6 oz = F (Fruit)
Oat milk is a popular pick for those avoiding dairy, and it often comes fortified with calcium, vitamin D, and B12. It also contains a special type of soluble fiber — beta-glucan — that supports heart health and helps regulate blood sugar levels. But heads up: it’s higher in carbs and lower in protein, so it’s not ideal for weight loss goals.
Coach Maggie recommends:
F Elmhurst Unsweetened (not fortified)
F Califia Farms Organic Unsweetened (fortified)
Find both at Whole Foods and Target.
ALMOND MILK
(Unsweetened Only!) 8 to 10 oz
*I don’t count this on my plan — it’s mostly water. But it’s a great base for protein shakes! Almond milk is primarily water with 2-5% almonds. It’s low in calories and protein and is naturally lactose and diary-free. Great for vegan diets or dairy sensitivities. For a more balanced option, choose a fortified version with added calcium, vitamin D, and B12. Watch for added gums or thickeners, which may cause digestive issues. Fewer ingredients = better.
Coach Maggie recommends:
F Three Trees Unsweetened (not fortified, made with ~10% almonds)
F Califia Farms Organic Unsweetened (fortified)
Find both at Whole Foods and Target.
3/4 cup = D/F (Dairy/Fruit)
Cool off with this creamy, fruity treat. Just blend and freeze in an airtight container!
F 1 cup frozen fruit (pineapple is my favorite!)
F 1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk
F 1/2 cup 2% plain Fage yogurt
F 1 tablespoon honey
F 1/2 teaspoon vanilla or flavored extract
SOY MILK
6 to 8 oz = D (Dairy)
Soy milk is the most protein-rich plantbased option, with almost as much protein as dairy milk. It’s naturally lactose-free, usually fortified, and rich in isoflavones — plant compounds that may support heart health, bone strength, and hormonal balance. While soy may sometimes raise concerns due to its estrogen-like properties, studies show it’s safe in moderation (up to 25g of soy protein daily).
Coach Maggie recommends:
F Eden Soy Unsweetened (not fortified)
F Silk Organic Unsweetened (fortified)
Find both at Whole Foods and Target.
