LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Welcome to Spring MAC members! As we close out the excitement and drama of March’s NCAA basketball tournaments, I hope this message finds you well and in great spirits! April is a time of renewal, growth, and new beginnings, and we’re embracing this spirit in every aspect of what we do here at the MAC. With the weather warming up and nature blossoming, we are preparing for a host of thrilling activities and events that promise to offer something for everyone.

REFLECTING ON MARCH: A MONTH OF CELEBRATIONS AND INSPIRATION

March was an exciting and inspiring month for our community. Early in the month, our Women’s Initiative Group hosted a memorable breakfast in collaboration with FOCUS St. Louis, honoring Women’s History Month. Nearly 350 attendees were inspired by our distinguished panelists, who shared insights on their careers, the importance of community, and how to navigate power structures to drive meaningful change. Additionally, I had the honor of attending our annual Employee Service Awards. I have had the opportunity to witness firsthand the dedication, energy, and hard work our MAC team pours into every event, day after day. Their passion for what they do is unmatched, and it’s a privilege to work alongside such a committed team. Truly, no one does events quite like Team MAC!

KEY UPDATES FOR APRIL:

F Clayton Opportunity Townhalls: We hope you’re aware of the upcoming Townhalls in early April regarding the Clayton opportunity. It’s essential that you attend one to ensure you're well-informed about this potential offering. Your input is crucial to helping the Board make a well-informed decision on the final proposal, which, if approved, will be put to a full member vote.

F Strategic Plan in the Works: We are finalizing the first draft of our updated strategic plan, which will map out the Club's strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats, while outlining clear strategies to ensure we are poised for continued, sustainable growth.

F Golf Program Reminder: As the season shifts to warmer weather, now is the perfect time to take advantage of our golfing amenity program with Norwood Hills Country Club. There are still open spots available, so don’t hesitate to reach out to Rodney Stoyer at rstoyer@mac-stl.org for more information.

EXCITING APRIL EVENTS

YOU WON’T WANT TO MISS:

F Governor Mike Kehoe – April 1st: We are thrilled to host Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe, who will share his thoughts on the “State of the State.” It promises to be an insightful discussion, and we encourage you to join us for this exciting event.

F United States Basketball Writers’ College Basketball Awards – April 17th: This event is a must for basketball fans! Celebrate the best and brightest in men’s and women’s college basketball, as coaches, rookies, and players of the year receive well-deserved honors. Plus, don’t miss the recognition of the legendary Dick Vitalethe biggest Diaper Dandy of them all!

F Easter Celebration – April 19th and 20th: Whether you’re enjoying the holiday with family or taking time to unwind, our Easter celebrations have something for everyone. Join us for Breakfast with the Bunny on Saturday, April 19th at our West Clubhouse, and be sure to make reservations for our delectable Easter Brunch on April 20th at either the Downtown or West Clubhouses.

F Election Rooftop Happy Hour – April 23rd: All members are invited to gather and mingle before our Board of Governors Election. It’s a great opportunity to connect with fellow members in a relaxed setting.

F MAC Apollos Spring Show – April 25th: Join the MAC Apollos for their Spring Showcase, featuring iconic hits like “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Yellow Submarine,” and “Purple Rain”! This event promises to be a night of great music, fun, and entertainment for all.

CLUBHOUSE UPDATES:

As you’ll see in our CFO Pam Roth’s update, we are in a strong position financially, with a favorable variance of over $100,000 to budget midway through Fiscal Year 2025. With this solid footing, we’re moving forward with key capital projects, including continued enhancements to the West café and pool, along with updates to carpeting, furniture, window treatments, and fresh paint for the stairs, foyer, and ballroom at the Downtown Clubhouse.

As we move into spring, let’s come together to make lasting memories, enjoy all that our Club has to offer, and build deeper connections within our community. April is shaping up to be a month filled with growth, celebration, and shared experiences.

Wishing you all a wonderful April, and I look forward to seeing you at one of the Townhalls!

With gratitude,

LETTER FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER

Iam continually reminded how incredibly vibrant the MAC club culture truly is. In the past 30 days alone, we hosted numerous unforgettable events. We celebrated the 25th Anniversary of the Saint Louis Rams Super Bowl win; we hosted the McQueenie Cup Squash finals at our West Club; in a wonderful St. Louis tradition we hosted a float in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade; we celebrated our employees with our anniversary awards celebration and April 1 kicks off the month with Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe providing members with a “State of the State” address! A special note of “Thanks” goes to Steve Albart and Chris Swank leading the efforts of our MAC Speaker Series Committee to the benefit of the Club!

Please join me in welcoming our new Director of Security, Eric Jones. We conducted a lengthy selection process, which started with over 90 applicants. Eric brings an extensive background in law enforcement and private security, with over 20 years of progressive success. Eric is a retired Sergeant with the Marion County Sherriff’s Department, where he oversaw security operations for the circuit courts. Most recently he served as Director of Security for Reliant Care Management Company, where he oversaw operations for 21 facilities and 2,000 employees. His understanding of multiple operations, developing safety standards and protocols, combined with his service approach is what makes Eric an outstanding addition to the MAC team. Eric and his wife Talia of 26 years call O’Fallon, Missouri home with their wonderful children: Tre’Von, Lauren, Eric III, Taija and Evan.

Eric will be focused on all things safety and security for both Clubhouses, elevating our safety standards, member safety and an endless plan for training and implementation of protocols for the benefit of the MAC. Please join me in welcoming Eric to the MAC team. He will make his rounds at both Clubhouses in the coming weeks.

A highlight of the year is when the team of employees gather with the Board of Governors to celebrate service to the MAC. CONGRATULATIONS to the following team members:

2025 SECOND QUARTER FINANCIAL REPORT

February marked the end of the first half of the Club’s 2025 fiscal year, and our positive financial performance continues! The Club’s bottom-line Operating Cash Flow (net income before depreciation) for the six-month period totaled $1.3 million, which was $100,000 more favorable than budget, and $457,000 higher than last year. Membership has grown to 2,642 members with dues revenue totaling $5,970,000. Operating revenue reached an impressive $8.5 million, an increase of $430,000 over last year. This growth came primarily from our food and beverage departments.

At the end of February, the line of credit balance was $385,000, and the Working Capital Reserve (our internal line of credit) was fully utilized. Long-term bank debt totaled $7.5 million, while capital expenditures for the first half of the year amounted to $662,000. The balance of the Cash Reserve Fund remained steady at $2.7 million.

KEY UPDATES

Switching gears, I’d like to share an overview of the financial projections related to the potential Clayton opportunity in the Pierre Laclede Building. The pro forma is based on a proposed dues structure of $175 per month for current MAC members and a proposed offering to new MAC Clayton members of $400 per month, with a $5,000 initiation fee.

Initial start-up costs, staffing, training, and first-year losses are expected to create a funding gap of up to $2.9

unfavorable for the first two years but is expected to turn positive by the end of year three. By year four, working capital is forecasted to improve by $1.3 million.

A similar trend is expected for the current ratio, which takes a dip during the first two years of operation but improves by year three. Over four years, a cumulative 17% improvement is projected.

Members’ equity is expected to improve approximately $1 million per year, following a decrease during the first year. Over four years, members’ equity will increase by $2.5 million. By the end of the year four, the pro forma indicates:

F $1.3 million improvement in working capital

F 17% growth in the current ratio

F $2.5 million increase in members’ equity

F $3 million in generated cash flow after repayment of short-term borrowing

This significant cash flow can be used to fund capital projects at the Downtown and West Clubhouses, pay off existing debt, contribute to the funding strategy for the West Master Plan, or enhance the reserve fund.

GET INVOLVED

Please participate in the Clayton town hall meetings in early April to learn about this exciting opportunity, ask questions, and share your thoughts with Club leadership. MAC BOOK CLUB

Thursday, April 10 F 5:30 p.m. F West Clubhouse

Thursday, May 8 F 5:30 p.m. F West Clubhouse

On April 10, the Book Club returns to the world of fiction as Cathy Beckette guides our discussion of “Nothing Ventured” by Jeffrey Archer.

“Nothing Ventured” heralds the start of a brand-new series in the style of Jeffrey Archer’s #1 New York Times bestselling Clifton Chronicles: introducing Detective William Warwick. But this is not a detective story, this is a story about the making of a detective.

William Warwick has always wanted to be a detective, and decides, much to his father’s dismay, that rather than become a lawyer like his father and sister, he will join London’s Metropolitan Police Force. After graduating from university, William begins a career that will define his life. Investigating the theft of a priceless Rembrandt painting from the Fitzwilliam Museum, he meets Beth Rainsford, a research assistant at the gallery who he falls hopelessly in love with, even as Beth guards a secret that she’s terrified will come to light. Through twists, triumph and tragedy, this series will show that William Warwick is destined to become one of Jeffrey Archer’s most enduring legacies.

On May 8, we revert to history as we discuss “The Happiest Man on Earth” by Eddie Jaku, under the direction of Deborah Besserman.

Born into a Jewish family in Leipzig, Germany, Eddie Jaku was a teenager when his world was turned upside-down. On November 9, 1938, during the terrifying violence of Kristallnacht, the Night of Broken Glass, Eddie was beaten by SS thugs, arrested, and sent to a concentration camp with thousands of other Jews across Germany. Every day of the next seven years of his life, Eddie faced unimaginable horrors in Buchenwald, Auschwitz, and finally on a forced death march during the Third Reich’s final days. The Nazis took everything from Eddie—his family, his friends, and his country. But they did not break his spirit.

Against unbelievable odds, Eddie found the will to survive. Overwhelmingly grateful, he made a promise: he would smile every day in thanks for the precious gift he was given and to honor the six million Jews murdered by Hitler. Today, at 100 years of age, despite all he suffered, Eddie calls himself the “happiest man on earth.” In his remarkable memoir, this born storyteller shares his wisdom and reflects on how he has led his best possible life, talking warmly and openly about the power of gratitude, tolerance, and kindness. Filled with his insights on friendship, family, health, ethics, love, hatred, and the simple beliefs that have shaped him, “The Happiest Man on Earth” offers timeless lessons for readers of all ages.

Tuesday, April 22 F 11:30 a.m. F Downtown

The Military History Club welcomes a return, in-person visit by Dr. Don Hickey, who will speak on "The War of 1812: Why Is This Conflict All But Forgotten Today?"

The War of 1812 played a central role in shaping the development of the United States in the nineteenth century, but it is all but forgotten today. Why is this so? Why do most Americans, even those who are well educated, know so little about such an important event in our history? In this lecture, Don Hickey identifies what he thinks are the principal reasons that explain why this war has slipped so deep into the recesses of our public memory.

Don Hickey is an award-winning author who has written 12 books and

Myths of the War of 1812 (2006)” and his latest book, “Tecumseh’s War: The Epic Conflict for the Heart of America,” was published in 2023. ST. LOUIS FOOTBALL

A CHAMPIONSHIP LEGACY MEETS NEW GAMEDAY EXCITEMENT

Former St. Louis Post-Dispatch columnist Bernie Miklasz once wrote, “there’s no such thing as a bad football town – only bad owners.” Stan Kroenke may have taken NFL football out of St. Louis, but he can’t take away the passion for football in the Gateway City.

St. Louis Rallies Around the Battlehawks

Celebrating a St. Louis Super Bowl Championship

Members filled the ballroom on Thursday, Feb. 20 as the MAC Speaker Series presented a celebration commemorating the 25th anniversary of St. Louis winning the Super Bowl.

The “Greatest Show on Turf” took the NFL by storm during the 1999 season and thrilled fans on their way to winning the championship.

Hall of Fame Head Coach Dick Vermeil shared his memories of leading a special group of players. Topping the list of his star players was Marshall Faulk, who recalled the great crowd support and homefield advantage that the team enjoyed at the Dome.

Linebacker Mike Jones, who made “The Tackle” in the final seconds to preserve the championship, recalled what it was like to make one of the most clutch plays in Super Bowl history. Coach Vermeil highlighted the important role that some of the unsung players like Andy McCollum and Adam Timmerman had in the team’s success. The “Doughnut Brothers” anchored a line that allowed the offense to thrive.

KTVI FOX 2 Sports Director and MAC member Martin Kilcoyne moderated the entertaining discussion. At the conclusion of the Q&A, the Lombardi Trophy made a surprise appearance on the stage. Following the event, attendees formed a line outside the ballroom to pose with the trophy at the MAC photobooth. It was a fantastic finale to another memorable night at the Club!

The enthusiasm for football in St. Louis will be on full display this spring at the Dome! Ecstatic crowds pack the lower bowl of the stadium for Battlehawks games, bringing unmatched energy. The fan support in St. Louis is unrivaled in the United Football League (UFL) with the Battlehawks more than doubling the average attendance of every other franchise. Gameday at the Dome is a thrilling experience that goes beyond the action on the field. Conveniently located just across the street, make the MAC part of your game plan. Treat friends and family to discounted tickets and enjoy gameday dining at your Club!

GET CARE FASTER

Did you know that you may not need a prescription for physical therapy?

It’s called direct access, and it empowers you to be your own health care advocate. You may be able to be evaluated and treated by a licensed physical therapist without a physician’s prescription.*

This means you can start treatment more quickly to restore your strength, regain your skills and reduce any pain. Depending upon the diagnosis, your therapist at SSM Health Physical Therapy may recommend that you follow up with a physician or other licensed health care professional before beginning your treatment.

Getting therapy first may help you:

• Save time

• Save money

• Expedite treatment

• Avoid opioids

• Prevent surgery

If your physician does prescribe physical therapy, you are not obligated to receive physical therapy in any specific facility. You have the right to choose where you want to go.

When choosing the right physical therapy provider, SSM Health Physical Therapy offers:

• Therapists who are licensed by the state and many hold advanced certifications.

• Participation with most insurance plans, which may help to minimize any out-ofpocket expenses.

• Submission of claims to your insurance company and help estimating any personal financial responsibilities.

• Examples of comments our patients provided so that you may learn more about their experiences with our care.

• Accreditation by the Joint Commission, which ensures the highest level of quality and patient safety.

Remember:

You are the most important member of your health care team and are free to choose the rehabilitation provider that can best help you meet your goals.

Find Inner Peace with Conscious Breathwork

Breathwork Sessions with Nicki Hamrah West Clubhouse Yoga/Barre Room

Saturday, April 12 | 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.

Thursday, April 24 | 6-8 p.m.

Sunday, May 4 | 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

$40 per person, per session (members can attend one, two, or all sessions)

Conscious breathwork is a means of inducing an altered state of awareness through full and connected breathing. Energy is activated in the body, and as the energy disperses, it serves to release physical and emotional blockages. Possible experiences include resolution and release of problems, unresolved childhood wounds, birth memories, and stored trauma in the body. The process is gentle, safe and deeply moving. You will be conscious and completely in control. Come prepared for immediate growth and a powerful experience!

“I went in with an open mind so that I could allow any experience to take place. Initially, I thought the breathing was hard to keep pace and then it suddenly became easy, and I was in a meditative relaxed state. I found myself experiencing energy changes in my body and limbs. When we ended, I felt like I had slept for hours!”

Paul Helfrich, West Fitness Manager

“I was unsure what to expect with taking the Conscious Breathwork class. I went in with an open mind. It was a deeply relaxing and meditative experience. I even found myself emotional. Nicki was great at giving gentle reminders and telling us what to expect. If you are looking for a meditative experience, I would recommend trying this class.”

Joy Holdmeier, Youth Programs Manager

WHAT TO BRING:

Wear loose, comfortable clothing and bring a blanket and pillow. Avoid eating for at least one hour before class. Eye masks will be provided, but you are welcome to bring your own.

Register on the MAC app. For more information, contact Christine Hillenbrand at chillenbrand@mac-stl.org

COSTA RICA YOGA RETREAT

Exploring New Places, Embracing First-Time Experiences, and Building Diverse Connections

For the second year in a row, MAC yogis returned to the breathtaking beauty of Nosara, Costa Rica — and what an unforgettable week it was! This year, new faces were welcomed alongside many returning attendees, creating a dynamic and inspiring group.

The focus this year was to step beyond comfort zones, embrace the unknown, forge new connections, and, for some, try yoga for the first time! By the end of the week, it was clear no one was ready to leave. A special bond formed among the group, one that will last far beyond their time in Costa Rica. New friendships were made, lifelong memories created, and they returned home to St. Louis feeling alive and refreshed — just in time for the start of a winter storm!

This year brought exciting new experiences, from a hands-on cooking class and Malamaking session to a Cacao Ceremony and Sound Journey. Members also took to ATVs and ventured off the beaten path to ride through lush backroads, eventually arriving at La Finca de Don Vidol, a 40-year-old coffee farm. There, they enjoyed a guided tour, a homemade lunch, and even a live guitar performance by Don Vidol’s grandson — a truly magical moment.

Thank you, Costa Rica, for your beauty, your warmth, and the experiences that MAC members carried home in their hearts. Members can join the third visit to Nosara, Costa Rica, next year!

MAC Member Testimonials

“If you have the opportunity to do any retreat with Megan, do not hesitate — DO IT! Her thoughtful attention in creating a magical and balanced retreat is evident with every detail. Her teaching style is loving, as well as encouraging. The Costa Rica retreat that I attended was extraordinary. I leave with memories that will last a lifetime, a better appreciation of my mind and body, new friendships, and those incredible Costa Rican sunsets imprinted in my heart. A+++++ First rate!”

“This retreat was held at a perfect location, and the food was amazing! As someone that has been in the travel/event industry for over 40 years, I can say this trip was very well planned and organized. There were enough optional activities to keep the very busy travelers occupied. And the hotel setting was extremely relaxing, so it was perfect for the participants that just needed time and space to relax. I hope I get the opportunity to return next year!”

“After suffering from a health issue two years ago, I felt very disconnected from my body. I had not done yoga in years, although it was something I used to enjoy very much. This retreat was very therapeutic and reignited my love of yoga. It was filled with great yoga classes, amazing adventures, laughter, excellent food and company. I now have new friends who I can’t wait to see again in St. Louis. To say I came home reinvigorated would be an understatement. I can’t wait to go on another retreat with Megan.”

COACH MAGGIE’S NOTES

ON

Choosing the Right Bread

Everyone wants to be healthier, and choosing the right bread and grain products can provide a strong foundation for a nutritious diet.

WHOLE-GRAIN BREAD

Made from whole, unrefined grains, whole-grain bread contains all parts of the grain—the bran, germ and endosperm— offering more fiber, vitamins, and minerals. This is a great option for steady energy, better digestion, and musclebuilding due to its complex carbohydrates and nutrients. Whole-grain bread can be made from any whole grain (not just wheat), such as oats, barley, rye, quinoa, or a mix of grains.

MAGGIE'S PICKS

F Dave’s Killer Bread Powerseed – If weight loss is the goal, choose the thin slice. The added sugar comes from organic fruit juices, mainly from apples, pears, and peaches.

F Ezekiel 4:9 Low Sodium – This is a sprouted wheat bread, which helps break down starches, making it easier to digest and absorb nutrients. It usually contains more fiber and protein and has a low glycemic index, which helps control blood sugar.

WHOLE-WHEAT BREAD

Made entirely from whole-wheat flour, meaning the entire wheat kernel (bran, germ, and endosperm) is used, this bread is typically labeled 100% whole wheat It’s more nutritious than regular wheat bread because it retains fiber, vitamins, and minerals.

MAGGIE'S PICK

F Dave’s Killer Bread 100% Whole Wheat Thin Slices

WHEAT BREAD

Labeled as “wheat flour” or “enriched wheat flour,” this type of bread is often made with refined wheat flour. This means the bran and germ—both nutritious parts of the grain—are removed during processing, leaving only the endosperm. The refining process makes the flour softer and extends shelf life but strips away fiber, vitamins, and minerals, making it nutritionally similar to white bread.

If nutrition is a priority, whole grain or whole wheat is always a better option over regular wheat bread. Whole-grain and whole-wheat breads contain more fiber, vitamins, and minerals making them healthier choices for digestion and overall health. When selecting bread, read the label to ensure it is made with 100% whole grain or whole-wheat flour. The Whole Grain Council makes it easier for consumers by placing a Whole Grain

SOURDOUGH

For those watching gluten intake, sourdough is easier to digest than regular bread its natural fermentation process breaks down gluten. However, sourdough made from wheat still contains gluten and is not safe for those with celiac disease or severe gluten intolerance.

For a lower-gluten option, look for a long-fermented sourdough made using traditional methods. If avoiding gluten entirely, choose a gluten-free sourdough made from alternative flours like rice or buckwheat.

MAGGIE'S PICKS

F Simple Kneads Organic Sourdough (Gluten-Free)

F Izzio Artisan Bakery – Uses a 72-hour fermentation process, making it a good choice for those watching gluten.

Stamp on certified whole-grain products— look for the gold stamp on the bag.

West Clubhouse Childcare Room Undergoes Stunning Renovation

The renovation of the West Clubhouse Childcare Room is now complete! In just one month, the space has undergone a remarkable transformation. The new foam-backed vinyl flooring and fresh coat of paint create a bright and inviting atmosphere. The room also features several upgrades, including new lighting, blinds, chairs, cabinets, countertops, and cribs.

In addition to aesthetic improvements, safety and security have been enhanced. A new wall has been installed, allowing childcare staff to securely buzz parents and children in and out from behind the drop-off area. As well as all cabinets now include child safety locks for added protection.

These updates provide a more comfortable and engaging environment for the children. They can now enjoy a new kitchen set, dollhouse, workbench, and two new iPads preloaded with educational games. Childcare reservations can be easily made through the MAC app!

CELEBRATING COLLEGE BASKETBALL’S BEST

On April 17, the MAC will host the USBWA College Basketball Awards honoring the top stars in the game. Legendary broadcaster Dick Vitale will receive the USBWA’s Dean Smith Award. During a broadcasting career spanning five decades, Vitale has become college basketball’s ultimate ambassador.

LaPhonso Ellis, a decorated local

high school player who went on to shine at Notre Dame and have an 11-year NBA career, will be a featured banquet guest. Duke star Cooper Flagg is both the Freshman of the Year and the Men's Player of the Year. Rick Pitino of St. John’s is the Men’s Coach of the Year and Cori Close of UCLA is the Women’s Coach of the Year. JuJu Watkins of USC is the Women’s

Player of the Year and Mikayla Blakes of Vanderbilt is the Freshman of the Year. Tom Ackerman from KMOX Radio and Michelle Smallmon of ESPN Radio will return as co-hosts of the banquet. The event is sold out, but a few sponsorship opportunities remain to attend the banquet. Contact jwilson@mac-stl.org for details.
