I t is both an honor and a privilege to serve as the 110th president of the Missouri Athletic Club. As I step into this role, I am filled with a deep sense of gratitude—for the members who make this Club such a vibrant community, for the leadership and vision of those who came before me, and for the opportunity to contribute to an institution that has been a cornerstone of St. Louis life for more than a century.
I am especially thankful to be serving alongside an outstanding group of officers: Adrian DiBisceglie, Carrie Burggraf, David Sweeney, and Matt Masiel. Each of them brings not only talent and insight but also an unwavering commitment to placing the interests of the Club and its members at the forefront of everything we do. Their passion for the MAC is inspiring, and I am confident we will accomplish great things together.
I would also like to extend my sincere appreciation to our outgoing president, Jodi Petersen. Over the past several months, Jodi and I have worked closely to ensure a seamless transition of leadership. Her counsel, wisdom and dedication have been invaluable to me personally, and her contributions to the Club this past year have been exceptional. Under her leadership, the MAC successfully navigated a pivotal vote to move forward with the Clayton amenity. I know I speak for many when I say we are all deeply grateful for her dedicated service and numerous accomplishments over the past year.
Alongside Jodi, I also want to recognize the outgoing officers who have completed their terms: Tom Dankenbring, Jeff Wehmer, Gary Sextro and Tim Maynard. These gentlemen have given their time and leadership generously, and their efforts have left a lasting, positive impact on the Club. They will be missed, but their legacy will be felt for years to come.
As we look ahead, I have been fortunate to spend time getting to know and work with our newest class of Junior Board members: Bob Bax, Mark Milton, Peggy Northcott, Jerina Phillips and Cale Prokopf. Their enthusiasm, fresh perspectives and willingness to contribute are already making a difference. I am confident they are ready to embrace the challenges and opportunities this year will bring.
I also want to congratulate our newly elected Governors: Brad Burns, Chris Hermann, Tom Hilton, Kathleen Tallis and Kurt Witzel. Each brings unique experience and expertise to the Board of Governors, and we are lucky to have them join our leadership ranks.
I look forward to working alongside the Board of Governors, our newly formed committees, GM/COO Chip Misch and our outstanding staff as we continue to grow and strengthen the MAC.
Looking forward, I am energized by the opportunities on the horizon — especially the exciting developments surrounding the Clayton amenity.
As we continue to work diligently toward negotiating a favorable lease agreement, I want to take a moment to express my sincere gratitude to several individuals whose dedication has been instrumental in reaching this pivotal stage. Past Presidents Brent Beumer, Dan Lett, Angie Minges and Mike Schoedel have each contributed countless hours and unwavering commitment to the vision and planning that brought us to the successful Clayton amenity club vote.
Their efforts exemplify the spirit of collaboration and service that defines our Club. Thanks to their hard work— and the support of so many members—we are poised to take a significant step forward in enhancing the MAC experience for generations to come.
In future letters, I will elaborate on key initiatives tied to our updated strategic plan — initiatives that align with the Club’s core strategic pillars that are designed to position the MAC for continued success and relevance in the years ahead.
As we dive into another exciting summer season at the MAC, I am thrilled to share some updates that reflect our continued commitment to enhancing the member experience. With the pool now open at the West Clubhouse, members will notice several new features and upgrades designed to elevate both comfort and convenience. Among the most notable improvements is the newly renovated extension of the Café Cherry Diamond, which now offers additional seating for families and guests. We have also refreshed the outside bar to better serve members. To further enhance time at the pool, the deck has been expanded, and brandnew furniture has been added to ensure greater comfort and relaxation for everyone. In response to these enhancements, we are also increasing staff coverage at the pool area to maintain an elevated level of service. These upgrades represent just one part of our broader vision of the Club’s future, and I am confident they will help make this summer one to remember.
Finally, I want to thank you for entrusting me with this role. I will do my best to serve with integrity, transparency and a steady eye toward what is best for the Club and its members. Together, I am confident that we can build upon the MAC’s enduring legacy while writing an exciting new chapter in its story.
Here’s to a great year ahead. I look forward to seeing you around the Club.
Warm regards,
As we approach the midway point of 2025, it is apparent that the MAC is in the midst of what is shaping up to be an impactful year!
Following the favorable membership vote to move forward with the MAC Clayton amenity offering, management has begun its efforts in collaboration with the Board to prepare for a successful launch. By now, all members have received communication relating to securing a membership space in Clayton. Our membership department is readily available to assist with any questions, or referrals of friends interested in becoming a member. We are committed to keeping the membership informed every step of the way as we approach the opening.
In recent months, we have completed several projects at both Clubhouses. I am certain everyone is enjoying the enhancements to the West pool deck and bar, as well as the Café Cherry Diamond. Gerard LaRuffa and Erica Karsznia are to be commended for their diligent efforts in planning for success. In step with this, we are making strides in upgrading the Missouri Room and anticipate work being completed by the end of summer. The renovation plans will enhance this historic space and certainly elevate all events for many years to come.
Our team of employees are at the heart of the MAC experience, and I am pleased to highlight our most recent Employee of the Quarter recipients. Gheri Garza has been a longtime favorite of the MAC Downtown front desk team! Working here since 2004, Gheri is a three-time winner of this prestigious award! Sam Liebman has been on the MAC West team since the Fall of 2020, exemplifying the gracious hospitality that serves as a trademark of the 1903 Bar. Both are shining examples of what makes the MAC so special. Congratulations Gheri and Sam!
The May Board meeting also marks the end of President Jodi Petersen’s term as the 109th president of the MAC! President Petersen was remarkable from the onset and took the lead on many important projects and strategic initiatives to the benefit of the Club! She is an extraordinary leader with the absolute best interests of the MAC membership and team of employees at heart. We made meaningful, impactful progress over the past year as a result of Madame President’s leadership – Thank you!
Here’s to a great summer ahead – please enjoy your MAC experience to the fullest!

April 10 marked 50 years since Past President Tom O’Toole, Jr. joined the Missouri Athletic Club.
Downtown Clubhouse, Missouri Room
Cocktails at 6 p.m. | Dinner at 7 p.m.
Invite only
On Tuesday, June 17, the MAC 50-Year Member Dinner will take place at the Downtown Clubhouse in the Missouri Room to celebrate the Club’s exceptional milestone members. Club leaders will join current and new inductees of the MAC’s 50-Year and 150 Club members.
To qualify for the MAC 150 Club, the sum of a member’s age plus the number of years they have been a member must equal at least 150. This challenging feat is achieved only by the longesttenured members. MAC 150 Club members receive a symbolic coin, a tangible reminder of their commitment to the Club and its values. Meanwhile, 50-Year members receive a commemorative pin, symbolizing their long-lasting dedication to the MAC.
According to the Club’s records, he is the youngest past president ever to achieve 50 years of membership.
O’Toole is a founding partner of the law firm of Mickes O’Toole, LLC. He chairs the firm’s Business and Corporate Group, while his practice focuses on real estate, specializing in zoning/land use, condemnation and real estate transactions.
A native of St. Louis, O’Toole also has had a life in golf. He was the Founder of Metropolitan Amateur Golf Association and was elected the 63rd President of the United States Golf Association in 2014. He is a member of the St. Louis Sports, St. Louis University and Missouri Athletic Club Hall of Fames.
Joan Sheehan has achieved 70 years of membership at the Missouri Athletic Club. To honor her commitment to the Club, May 26, the day she joined, was proclaimed Joan Sheehan Day at the MAC. Mrs. Sheehan will turn 94 on June 9.

The Club is pleased to share that MAC members have voted to move forward with the addition of a third location in Clayton.
The MAC Clayton amenity initiative has been guided at every step by member voices. The vote, held April 14-22, drew participation from 62% of members. Of those who voted, 78% were in favor of the additional amenity. More than 650 members have already expressed interest in adding MAC Clayton to their current membership.
The Board of Governors sincerely thanks all members who participated in the vote, including the 363 members who voiced
opposition. Their perspectives are valued and will continue to help shape the planning process.
Current MAC members will receive first access to opt in to MAC Clayton. Later this month, an email will be sent with instructions on how to reserve a spot. Importantly, no dues will be charged related to MAC Clayton until the location is operational.
Additional information about the project timeline and leasing progress will be shared as details are finalized. For questions, please contact questions@mac-stl.org, or view the MAC Clayton amenity webpage under the About section on the MAC website.

The 2025 Club Election campaign concluded on May 1. Members cast their votes in the Art Lounge and joined in the revelry as they walked through the gauntlet, accompanied by a live band and cheers from fellow members. A complimentary dinner was served in the Missouri Room and Eads Room following voting hours.
President Jodi Petersen addressed the audience, where her nephew, Preston Petersen, presented her with the honorary gold member card in recognition of her service as Club president. At the conclusion of the evening, the five newest MAC Governors were celebrated.

On June 12, Leslee Zillmer leads the Book Club through “North Woods” by David Mason.
When two young lovers abscond from a Puritan colony, little do they know that their humble cabin in the woods will become the home of an extraordinary succession of human and nonhuman characters alike. An English soldier, destined for glory, abandons the battlefields of the New World to devote himself to growing apples. A pair of spinster twins navigate war and famine, envy and desire. A crime reporter unearths an ancient mass grave—only to discover that the earth refused to give up their secrets. A lovelorn painter, a sinister con man, a stalking panther, a lusty beetle: As the inhabitants confront the wonder and mystery around them, they begin to realize that the dark, raucous, beautiful past is very much alive.
This magisterial and highly inventive novel from Pulitzer Prize finalist Daniel Mason brims with love and madness, humor and hope. Following the cycles of history, nature, and even language, “North Woods” shows the myriad, magical ways in which we’re connected to our environment, to history, and to one another.
On July 10, we turn our attention to a former MAC member as Helen McGlynn takes us on a ride through Harry Truman’s “Excellent Adventure.”
ooOn June 19, 1953, Harry Truman got up early, packed the trunk of his Chrysler New Yorker, and did something no other former president has done before or since: he hit the road. No Secret Service protection. No traveling press. Just Harry and his childhood sweetheart Bess off to visit old friends, take in a Broadway play, celebrate their wedding anniversary in the Big Apple, and blow a bit of the money he’d just received to write his memoirs. Hopefully incognito.
ooIn this lively history, author Matthew Algeo meticulously details how Truman’s plan to blend in went wonderfully awry. Fellow diners, bellhops, cabbies, squealing teenagers at a Future Homemakers of America convention, and one very by-the-book Pennsylvania state trooper all unknowingly conspired to blow his cover. Algeo revisits the Trumans’ route, staying at the same hotels and eating at the same diners, and takes readers n brief detours into topics such as the postwar American auto industry, McCarthyism, the nation’s highway system, and the decline of Main Street America. By the end of the 2,500-mile journey, you will have a new and heartfelt appreciation for America’s last citizen-president.

exhibit to recognize the 50th anniversary of the end of U.S. involvement in Vietnam. She will also discuss the importance of photojournalism in the war, including how images of the conflict influenced President Ford’s conviction that the fighting could not continue.

The annual MAC Double Elimination Basketball Tournament wrapped up in thrilling fashion on Tuesday, April 22. The team captained by Andrew Bennett won the 2025 tournament. In a highstakes showdown, Team Bennett faced off against the undefeated squad led by Tom Halliday in what became a two-game championship battle.
Since Team Halliday had advanced through the winner’s bracket without a loss, Team Bennett—coming from the loser’s side—had to beat them twice to take the title. In the first championship game, Bennett’s team pulled off a nailbiting 55–50 overtime win, handing Halliday their first loss of the tournament and forcing a winner-take-all Game 2.
Riding that momentum, Team Bennett sealed the deal in the decisive final matchup, completing a gritty 6-1 tournament run. Gary Wood, a standout on Team Bennett, was named Tournament MVP for his exceptional performance throughout the competition.
Congratulations to all the players for a great tournament!

Summer often brings changes in routine— vacations, social events, cookouts — that can throw off your weight loss and fitness goals. Working with a nutrition coach like me, or one of the Club’s personal trainers, can help you stay accountable with a personalized plan tailored to your schedule. Trying to manage meal planning and workouts alone during the busy summer months can feel overwhelming. A coach or trainer can help streamline the process, saving you time and mental energy.
The season offers plenty of opportunities to indulge, from ice cream to barbecue favorites. With guidance, you can still enjoy your favorite seasonal treats while making smarter choices that keep you on track.
Personal trainers can develop customized outdoor training sessions that keep
you motivated and help you take full advantage of the longer days and warm weather.
SET
Summer is an ideal time to establish healthy habits that extend beyond the season. Whether your focus is fat loss, strength or boosting energy, working with a professional sets you up for long-term success.

Scheduling sessions with a personal trainer also adds structure to your week, turning your workouts into appointments you’re more likely to keep.

Throwing, pitching, swimming, volleyball — each of these activities puts stress on the shoulder and elbow, specifically to the area
that stabilizes and centers the shoulder within the socket. As a result, shoulder and elbow injuries can occur abruptly, or may develop over time in athletes who train with high intensity.
Studies have shown that 58 percent of high school baseball players will experience shoulder or elbow pain during their athletic careers. Other sports that involve these overhead throwing motions have a similar risk of injury.
