LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

February was another terrific month at the Missouri Athletic Club! There is no doubt that very good things are happening around the Club. The buzz is exciting, and it is contagious. I am pleased to report that we have reached the highest membership level since 2010!

One of the terrific things that happened in February was the Gala held on February 10, 2024, at the Downtown Clubhouse. The evening was amazing and great fun for our members and our staff alike. We have been talking a lot lately about what “better” looks like at the MAC. This Gala night was undoubtedly better. I am confident that all who attended will agree. Our staff did a fantastic job, as usual. If you did not attend the Gala this year, you should plan to attend next year.

Other recent news concerns the survey that went out to members to gauge interest in a Clayton location for the MAC. As of the date this article was submitted, we have had an impressive response to the survey from our members. The Clayton task force, management, and ultimately, the Board of Governors will drill down into the data to determine the next steps. We plan to decide on this unique opportunity soon. Our goal as an elected Board is to accomplish what is best for the Club and its members. We must thank (and continue to thank) Past Presidents Mike Schoedel, Dan Lett, Angie Minges, Brent Beumer, and all others who have worked hard on this effort for the Club. The Board and MAC members greatly appreciate their dedication.

We continue working on long-term strategic planning for Downtown and West Clubhouses. The discipline of the Board working collaboratively with the Finance and Planning committees and management should help our Club be well positioned for the future. There should be more information on this subject soon, too.

Other news involves our efforts to revive and renovate the 6th Floor spaces at the MAC Downtown. Thus far, the plan to revive this historic part of our Club is proceeding well. All our members know we have neglected the Board Room and the adjacent 6th Floor rooms for many years. In addition, there is a need for private dining options Downtown for our members. The spaces in the Jack Buck Grille and the Rendezvous room do not provide the private areas or quiet sophistication the renovated spaces will

provide. The renewed 6th Floor spaces will be available to all members for their professional and personal entertainment needs. GM/COO Chip Misch and his team are entirely on board and excited about this project and how it will serve members excellently in these new spaces. So all members are aware, an essential component of the 6th Floor project is the intention to fund a significant portion of it privately through voluntary donations by current and former Governors — folks that have historically, enthusiastically expressed fondness for their service to the Club and the 6th Floor itself — as well as via other members who see the vision and need and want to step up to make a difference. One hundred percent of the current Board of Governors is committed financially to this project. I am very thankful for all the support thus far to bring this essential 6th Floor space to a quality standard for all members to enjoy.

On a broader scale, extending beyond the 6th Floor, we as members must ensure that we take excellent care of our entire Club and leave it in better (or at least as good) condition than when we found it.

In addition, we recently re-activated a Board ad hoc safety and security committee. This group will liaise with the Board and management to ensure we handle safety and security issues at the Downtown and West Clubhouses as well as possible. We anticipate an important announcement on this front soon.

Finally, on the GM leadership transition front, about seven months in, I can report continued, excellent progress. GM/COO Misch and the team strive daily to make our Club better. That is and has continued to be the Board of Governors’ charge. I hope our members agree and are supportive, even if we are not yet quite perfect. If you do not see improvement, please immediately contact Chip, me, or any Board member. The Board of Governors and staff remain focused on our vision “to be the foremost private club in St. Louis known for attracting exceptional people and enriching lives for generations.”

See you around the Club!

LETTER FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER

There is much to report, and I trust this note finds you and your families enjoying your MAC experiences — whether Downtown or at West! I continue to hear great feedback on the monthly features on our Athletics program — which is the heart and soul of the Club, and I am thankful to Jeff Tuhro and his team for their commitment to driving best-in-class programming at all levels.

By now, you have had the chance to enjoy the many new menus featured at our Downtown and West Clubhouses. Please be sure to share your feedback at all levels. We have a great deal of “untapped” culinary talent at the MAC, and we intend to highlight their talents and enthusiasm in the months ahead. We are focused on elevating experiences in each of our dining outlets, and we will continue to bring unique menu offerings to differentiate each outlet while encouraging each Chef to put their passion on display. In that spirit ...

I am proud to recognize MAC Executive Pastry Chef Katie Acker for recently attending a class at the Chocolate Academy in New York City in late January. It was an excellent opportunity for her to expand and perfect her skills and to work with true masters from the Barry Callebaut chocolate brand. Katie has already incorporated some of what she learned in the class back at the Club. I encourage all our members to experience Chef Katie and her pastry team’s creations — and look for upcoming opportunities to meet the team and enjoy one of the more desirable “amenities” at the MAC! Please turn to page 27 to learn more about her experience.

Congratulations to Chef Bart and Chef Katie for their commitment to elevating the culinary experience at the MAC! I can personally vouch for the salted caramel chocolates. They are absolutely superb!

One of the initial priorities in joining the MAC family was to initiate a plan to position the MAC as an “employer of choice” in the St. Louis region! This substantial goal is a process and will take a continued effort by the leadership team, with the support of the Board, to drive excellence in creating a culture of hiring only the best, most engaging employees available to us — and just as significantly, retaining the quality members of the team already in place! Our first priority was to bring on a Director of Training for all MAC departments — focused on a cohesive service standard, elevated training processes, continuous programming on safety and security, and elevated leadership training of our management team. The entire leadership team is focused on the success of this role and its importance in positioning the Club for long-term success!

Please join me in welcoming Jennifer Aremka as the Director of Training for the MAC. Jenni brings over 10 years of progressive training experience to the Club, with an impressive track record in the hospitality business ranging from front-line programming to executive-level development. She has been with the MAC for almost 60 days now and spent the first month immersed in the operations — watching and learning. Please say hello as you see her about both Clubhouses and expect Jenni to update all members on her priorities and progress as she settles in. As all levels of service, engagement, and efficiencies improve — be assured that Jenni will be at the heart of this success.

February was yet another memorable month, with the President’s Gala, Good Fellowship Day and Boxing Night leading the way, from my perspective, as impactful! And Baseball ... is just around the corner!

Very best regards,

6 F CHERRY DIAMOND

MAC Art Society Guest Speaker: MARK O. HOWALD

One of Wyoming’s most celebrated cowboy artists, William “Bill” Gollings longed for a forgotten American West and went about authenticating his lifestyle to carefully render its people and pains in his artwork.

Born in the Territory of Idaho in 1878, Gollings’ early years were spent in a mining camp before his parents sent him to live with his aunt in Michigan to be educated. His early paintings gained him admittance to the Academy of Fine Arts in Chicago where he studied for two years. From there he moved West engaging in Western activities, branding cattle, driving a stagecoach, and roaming the open ranges working odd jobs for money, food, and shelter. After five years he was accepted back in Chicago on scholarship but grew tired of city life, and in 1909 moved to Sheraton, Wyoming where he built a small studio. Gollings was a pupil of the great Frederick Remington, and his scenes of Western life were immensely popular and widely reproduced on Christmas cards of his time. He never abandoned the cowboy way of life and remained in Wyoming until his death in 1932.

12 F CHERRY DIAMOND CLUBS WITHIN THE CLUB

MAC BOOK CLUB

Thursday, March 14 F 5:30 p.m. F West Clubhouse

On Thursday, March 14, Past Governor Judith Hanses will lead the book club in a discussion of The Sweetness of Water by Nathan Harris.

In the waning days of the Civil War, brothers Prentiss and Landry — freed by the Emancipation Proclamation — seek refuge on the homestead of George Walker and his wife, Isabelle. The Walkers, wracked by the loss of their only son in the war, hire the brothers to work on their farm, hoping through an unexpected friendship to stanch their grief. Prentiss and Landry, meanwhile, plan to save money for the journey north and a chance to reunite with their mother, who was sold away when they were boys.

Parallel to their story runs a forbidden romance between two Confederate soldiers. The young men, recently returned from the war to the town of Old Ox, hold their trysts in the woods. But when their secret is discovered, the resulting chaos, including a murder, unleashes convulsive repercussions on the entire community. In the aftermath of so much turmoil, it is Isabelle who emerges as an unlikely leader, proffering a healing vision for the land and for the newly free citizens of Old Ox.

With candor and sympathy, debut novelist Nathan Harris creates an unforgettable cast of characters, depicting Georgia in the violent crucible of Reconstruction. Equal parts beauty and terror, as gripping as it is moving, The Sweetness of Water is an epic whose grandeur locates humanity and love amid the most harrowing circumstances.

For monthly MAC Book Club meetings, reservations are made with Dr. Genie McKee, Book Club Chair at evmckee@gmail.com

Military History Club Welcomes Author John Stillman

Tuesday, March 26 F 11:30 a.m. F Downtown Clubhouse

On Tuesday, March 26, the Military History Club turns its attention to the Vietnam War as it welcomes an in-person appearance by John Stillman, who recounts his wartime memories in Jumping from Helicopters.

In 1967, at age nineteen, John Stillman — refusing to wait for the draft — voluntarily enlisted in the Army to aid his fellow countrymen in one of the most opposed involvements in our nation’s history: the Vietnam War. Quickly falling in love with the rush of being a paratrooper with the 101st Airborne, he believed his service would honorably help the South Vietnamese protect their country from the ruthless communist North and their Southern allies. But once in the volatile jungles of Vietnam, the merciless hunting and killing of the enemy, the constant threat of landmines and booby traps, ambushes that could easily backfire, and deaths of his comrades made Stillman question how any man — if he survived — could ever return to his life as he’d known it. Written with John’s daughter, Lori Stillman, Jumping from Helicopters is a vivid and moving memoir that unearths fifty years of repressed memories with stunning accuracy and raw details. Interwoven with the author’s own journal entries and including thirty-five photographs, it is a story that will open your eyes to what these brave young men witnessed and endured, and why they returned facing a lifetime of often unspoken unrest, persistent nightmares, and forced normalcy, haunting even the strongest of soldiers.

FROM COURTSIDE CONNECTIONS TO NATIONAL TRIUMPHS

MAC Basketball is More Than Just a Game – It’s a Brotherhood

BEYOND THE BUZZER: MORE THAN A CENTURY OF COURTSIDE CONNECTIONS

Since the early 1900s, basketball has been a slam-dunk at the MAC, setting an unmatched record for longevity and sustained popularity. Over the years, the Club has hosted several basketball events, including the North American Association of Club Athletic Directors tournament (NACAD) and the United States Basketball Writers Association banquet.

As a game-changer in the MAC athletic playbook, basketball isn’t just a sport; it’s a key player in fostering Club camaraderie. Athletic Director Jeff Tuhro emphasizes that within the MAC’s basketball group, the tight-knit community forms a brotherhood that’s a gamechanger in itself.

“The basketball group is one of the tightest groups in the Club,” Tuhro noted. “The camaraderie and brotherhood is unlike anything else.” When new members join the basketball group, Tuhro says they “instantly have lifelong friends.”

Under the watchful eye of Athletic Department Supervisor Scott Mattingly, MAC basketball leagues maintain a consistent full-court press of quality. With minimal turnover in the past four decades, the leagues create connections that extend far beyond the court.

Mattingly ensures teams undergo a strategic shake-up each session, promoting an environment where guys get to know each other, leading to friendships that span beyond the three-point line.

The passion for basketball at the MAC goes beyond the structured leagues, with pick-up games happening daily at both locations. The Downtown Clubhouse, home to the Jack Buck Grille, serves as the ultimate post-game hangout, elevating the overall experience for players. In keeping with the MAC’s commitment to sportsmanship, the year-end banquet is a highlight, presenting prestigious awards to deserving players.

The Bill Daake Sportsmanship Award, named after a beloved MAC basketball legend, honors a player who has been in the league for at least five seasons and brings Daake’s spirit and sportsmanship to the court.

Another unique accolade, the BRICK award, originated in jest in 2008 and is presented to a player exhibiting a lighthearted approach to the game, with a less than stellar freethrow percentage. The inaugural recipient of this whimsical honor was Beau Reinberg, recognized for his good-natured spirit despite shooting under 20% from the free-throw line.

In the end, the joy of the game and the bonds formed within the MAC basketball community are just as vital as the scores on the scoreboard.

NACAD NATIONALS: MAC BASKETBALL TRIUMPHS AND TRADITIONS

The North American Association of Club Athletic Director’s tournament, where basketball teams from clubs nationwide compete, began in 1986. The tournament is hosted in a different city every year and the MAC hosted it in 1988, 1994, 2001 and 2015. There are seven divisions: Open, A, AA 35+, Masters 45+, Golden Masters 45+, Platinum Masters 60+ and Womens.

It is a true honor to represent the MAC at the NACAD tournament as it is invitation only. Many times, the same members from the clubs are chosen so the tournament becomes an annual reunion for those competing.

The MAC A division won two national championships. One in 1999 and the other in 2006. After winning the A division in 2006, that team moved up to the Open division and went on a tear, making it to the Open finals in 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010. The tournament also gives players access to the nation’s top courts. When the MAC hosts the tournament, games are played at Saint Louis University thanks to our member, Athletic Director Chris May. The Detroit Athletic Club will host the 2024 tournament from May 17-19 with games played at Wayne State University.

Michael Lofton is a pillar of the NACAD tournament for the MAC. He played in the MAC leagues for years, but now attends the NACAD tournament as a coach. He coached high school basketball in St. Louis for years and now lives in Indianapolis, but ahead of the tournament, he attends practices with those chosen to represent the MAC. Then he goes to the NACAD host site and coaches the MAC teams in each division.

There is a phrase in sales, “always be closing.” The same is true for tennis. Whether hitting from the baseline or moving into the net, always be closing to hit the shot.

In groundstroke rallies, be sure to stay far enough behind the baseline to ensure every ball bounces in front of you. This will also allow you to move forward with each groundstroke. High balls may require movement backwards first before closing to hit the shot. Short balls already require forward movement, and an attempt to contact the ball above the net should always be made. In both cases, moving forward to hit the shot will create momentum and an ability to hit a stronger ball.

In the case of volleys, it is even more important to close towards the net to make contact. With less space to lift the ball over the net and still have it land in the court, the volleyer should always do whatever possible to contact the ball high. Additionally, a closer position to contact the ball allows greater angles and space away from opponents. Finally, moving forward takes time away from the opponent to not allow them to recover to a neutral position after having been moved for the previous shot. Moving forward to hit the volley is guaranteed to create a winning position.

So, every time you set foot on the court, just remember your ABC’s: Always Be Closing!

ACL INJURY PREVENTION

AT SSM HEALTH PHYSICAL THERAPY!

Are You at Risk?

More than 200,000 young athletes sustain an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) knee injury each year … and over 70 percent of these injuries are not caused by contact. Studies show that injury rates can be dramatically reduced if the athlete is properly screened and participates in a preseason ACL injury prevention program.

How SSM Health Physical Therapy Can Help:

Using the dorsa Vi™ wireless wearable sensors while completing the ViPerform™ Athletic Movement Index (AMI™), the sports medicine therapists at SSM Health Physical Therapy can:

• Detect and correct potential muscular imbalances and movement deficits that may lead to pain and injuries

• Identify weak muscle areas and help improve poor biomechanics

• Provide a customized exercise regimen to reduce the risk of ACL injuries and improve performance on the field

SSM Health Physical Therapy’s approach to preventive and rehabilitative care maximizes function and promotes well-being in individuals of all ages and abilities. We focus on:

• Agility

• Strength and conditioning

• Endurance and performance

• Single leg stability and mechanics

Raising Your Game

Using the dorsa Vi™ wireless wearable sensors while evaluating clients, we

consider the many factors that can contribute to an ACL injury:

• Environment-related issues such as footwear and playing surfaces

• Athlete-specific causes such as muscle strength, flexibility and range of motion

• Previous injuries including concussions

A quick lower extremity screen using dorsa Vi™ and other assessment tools may help detect any weaknesses and/or imbalances that may put you at risk for an ACL injury.

Take the first step toward preventing an ACL injury — and staying in the game. Call to see if dorsa Vi™ or other movement efficiency screenings are right for you and your team!

Our MAC nutritionist, Maggie Dickinson, is such a tremendous asset for all of us. We are so fortunate to have such a trained specialist that will support and instill a healthy lifestyle for you.

In mid-June of 2023 I met with Maggie for the first time, and I asked her to help me improve my overall health and my eating habits. Throughout the past seven months, Maggie has taught me how to make better and wiser food choices to not only improve my wellbeing, but to lower my weight. Within months my cholesterol dropped by 30 points and my weight loss was amazing.

Maggie’s weekly meal plans, daily upbeat messages, wonderful recipes, and heartfelt encouragements have made my journey so enjoyable, fun and extremely rewarding. Maggie is THE best gift you could ever give yourself! I truly count her in my blessings!

I was able to lose 15% of my body weight with Maggie’s assistance. We met and she explained the program and took measurements so that she could track my progress. She explained what was missing from my diet and what I needed to avoid. She was always available for questions, including many text messages about what to eat. I personally met with her at the MAC every other week to discuss my progress and goals. She is the BEST! So knowledgeable and easy to work with. I would highly recommend Maggie to anyone who wants to be healthier and lose weight.

Chef Katie’s Sweet Success at NYC Chocolate Academy

In late January, Executive Pastry Chef Katie Acker attended a class at the Chocolate Academy in New York City. World-renowned confectioner Ewald Notter and his son Nicoll Notter led the week-long course, focusing on chocolate, pastillage and sugar sculptures, and bonbons.

By the end of the intensive class, Chef Katie had crafted a hanging showpiece adorned with chocolate bonbons underneath.

“I have been able to immediately bring back some of the techniques I learned,” Chef Katie shared. “We’re going to start small, but I’m hoping to make some chocolate showpieces for big holiday displays.”

Encouragement to expand and perfect her newfound skills came from Executive Chef Bart Philipps and MAC COO/General Manager Chip Misch. Chef Katie noted, “I’ve worked at other clubs, and they’ve sent me to a class here or there, but this is where I’ve felt the most enthusiasm for me to take more classes.”

Expressing pride, Chef Bart remarked, “I’m happy that she is taking the chance and the opportunity to further her abilities by taking chocolate classes and truffle classes where she’s going to bring something back to the Club that will enhance the pastry shop’s product.”

New Wine By The Glass List Rolls Out at Downtown Clubhouse

The Downtown Clubhouse’s new Wine By The Glass list, available to members starting Wednesday, Feb. 21, reflects the collaborative efforts of Sommelier Patricia Wamhoff and the MAC team. The new list now boasts an extensive selection of nearly 20 options, showcasing collections from France and Italy, alongside offerings from domestic vineyards. These wines are sourced from smaller, high-quality producers out of classic regions, contributing to a refined and diverse selection.

The Club’s commitment to elevating the wine experience is evident in the presentation of wines comparable to those enjoyed by members over the years. To complement this, the introduction of new wine glasses enhances the overall enjoyment of savoring a glass of wine.

Encouraging members to explore new flavors, Wamhoff remarked, “Why not open up your horizons and experience something different.”
