from the president The MAC is open. Although COVID-19 continues to limit our daily activities, our Club is open and providing a level of normalcy for us. August was the first month since March that our Club hosted larger events, which were done so safely. The tradition of the Father-Daughter Banquet continued in 2020. The attendees appreciated an event that felt “normal” and enjoyed carriage rides, dinner and dancing in a safe environment. It was grand to see fellow members adoring their daughters and experiencing a wonderful time together. We recognized Members who have attended the event with their daughters for five, 10, 15 years or more. Steve Bahn has attended the event for 35 years with his daughters, and more recently, his granddaughters. Amazing tradition! We held the first Lawyers’ Joke Contest and Dinner. While the humor was suspect, the dinner and camaraderie were entertaining and classic MAC. We wrapped up Foundations’ Month at the end of August with the Preservation Foundation Golf Tournament. This fun event raised funds for the MAC Preservation Foundation and included a unique golf trip to an exclusive club in Florida. Looking ahead to September, the Monthly Membership Mixer on Sept. 3 presents an excellent opportunity to mingle with other Members and introduce prospective Members to the Club. The Cigar-B-Que on Sept. 12 offers a unique experience with a meal, beer and cigars on the rooftop of the Downtown Clubhouse. The Golf Club Championship kicks off at Glen Echo on Sept. 17. The event is free to Glen Echo members, but all golfers are welcome. There is an open division and a handicap division. You can be the next Club champion! There will be food and drinks after the round. Reservations remain open for all

the September events. Further details and registration can be found on our website. We will continue to navigate COVID and the changing requirements of St. Louis City and County. Although neither Clubhouse is currently permitted to operate at 100 percent capacity, we are close to 100 percent in the Member services and amenities that are open. We are now welcoming guests for dining at both Clubhouses, and reservations are no longer required for fitness at the Downtown Clubhouse. Thank you to the 500-plus Members who responded to our recent survey. The goal of the survey is to gain insights into how our Club can evolve to meet the changing needs of our Members and their families during this unprecedented time. Your responses will help the Club deliver relevant services and program offerings during the pendency of the pandemic. Our Club is financially stable. We were on pace for a solid financial fiscal year when COVID arrived. Quick actions by the Board of Governors and staff mitigated the initial, adverse impacts and helped the Club endure during the Clubhouse closures. As we reopened, we experienced negative cash flow as the costs of staffing for Member services and amenities outpaced revenue from anemic hotel bookings and banquets just beginning to return. That said, we finished the fiscal year ending Aug. 31 with positive cash flow and have many events booked for the remainder of 2020. We just completed next fiscal year’s budget. We were careful to make realistic budget assumptions and consider multiple scenarios given the uncertainties surrounding COVID. We are prepared to react to multiple scenarios and are confident that our Club will persevere and emerge from the pandemic

stronger than ever. You can help by continuing to refer potential Members to the Club and sharing with them the many benefits of membership. As part of our new strategic planning process, a Thriving Membership is a Strategic Priority under our Relevance and Sustainability Strategic Pillar. A Thriving Membership means a membership comprised of individuals and families with different backgrounds and experiences who come together for the common purposes that the Club offers: premier social, dining and athletic experiences. As a new initiative, our Board launched a diversity and inclusion task force made up of MAC Governors, members of color and staff. The mission of the task force is to “engage diverse Members of the MAC community in meaningful activities to promote positive and sustained relationships among all persons inclusive of race, ethnicity, gender and other aspects of the human experience.” As part of this initiative, we will soon arrange our first Member and employee listening forum. Through these, we aim to better understand how we can make the MAC a more inclusive place for our employees, Members and guests. Our Club is open and striving to safely offer amenities and programs that our Members value during the pandemic. Please continue to offer your feedback and ideas to make our Club relevant and sustainable during COVID and beyond. I hope to see you at the Club soon.

Dan Lett, President Missouri Athletic Club

70+ YEARS AT THE MAC The Club celebrates its longest Members

During the month of August, MAC governors and staff leaders treated long-term Members Don Nies and Cliff Kurrus to special luncheons at the Club, where they received proclamations for being at the Club for more than 70 years. Their dedication and involvment to the Club has made them staples of the MAC community. Learn a little more about them and their time at the Club below.

DON NIES

Member for 72 years

Don Nies joined the MAC in February of 1948 when his father gifted him membership for his 21st birthday. Although he was grateful for this gift, his primary concern was how he would pay for it. At the time, he was working for the International Shoe Company. Since he first entered the MAC, Nies’ life has changed quite a bit. He married his wife in his first year at the MAC, welcomed four daughters and lived in three or four houses. He eventually even became president of a printing company and printed the Cherry Diamond publication for more than 20 years. To this day, Nies often uses the Club for dining and the fitness center. In his time at the MAC, he has enjoyed the all of the friends he and activities here, even as a boy in the Boy’s Group. His favorite memory, however, had to be the many New Year’s Eves he spent with his friends at the Club Downtown. “It was televised at midnight, and since I’m 6’4”, I’d stand in the middle of the dancefloor and stand above the participants and wave to WALLY SMITH, PRESIDENT DAN LETT, DON NIES, HIS my four little girls at home. DAUGHTER AND GRANDDAUGHTER, GOV. FOWLER AND And the next day, they’d LARRY ABSHEER say ‘We saw you! We saw you!’ We had a lot of fun doing that.” Nies went on to say being honored by the Club was “a special occasion. The Club is something that I’ve been a part of for more than 70 years so to be honored here today is quite a thrill.”

CLIFFORD KURRUS Member for 70 years

When Cliff Kurrus joined the MAC, he was 20 years old, the summer before his senior year of college. Though college and the Korean War kept him away from the Club for a while, he came back in full force, four years later, joining the basketball team right away, where they would play on Tuesday nights and have dinner afterward where he met many friends. Soon after, he attended an MAC volleyball game and, before he knew it, he had joined that team as well. In his time on the volleyball team, they won several tournaments. He also played tennis out at the West Clubhouse. Time when on, and though he was working and raising children, he came to the Club as often as he could. Then, a group of the mostly-retired Club members decided to start a club of their own, which they called the Forever Young Club. Through the FYC, they were able to reconnect with old friends and meet new ones. “At a Christmas concert, the FYC president at the time twisted my arm and asked me to be the next president. I told him I had to ask my wife, and she didn’t say no, so I became the president.” They continued activity in the Club and would go to the fitness center and dining and he stayed on the Board of the AIDAN, CLIFF AND PHILIP KURRUS POSE Forever Young Club. WITH CLIFF’S FATHER PRES. A.B. KURRUS Kurrus went on to say his only regret was that he was never on the Board of Governors, but because he was active in the Army Reserve, an ordained Anglican deacon and taught in the military, he, unfortunately, could not do it all.

For the Love OF THE GAME

Athletics is the MAC’s middle name, so it’s no surprise that its tennis programs are second to none in the region. This year, the tennis pros have encountered plenty of challenges with the shutdown, but their resolve remains as strong as ever. Read below to see how each tennis pro has dealt with the current situation. KIM STEINMETZ

2020 may be described in many ways, and, however surprising it may seem, I would describe it as revitalizing! The time I spent away from the Club ended up a positive experience for me. I spent more time with my kids, completed all kinds of projects, ate better, got the cobwebs off my bicycle and exercised! Plus, upon returning to work, I was rejuvenated! Once on the courts again, I analyzed my students’ tennis strokes as if I had not seen them before, which allowed me to notice things I had been overlooking due to familiarity. I not only came back with new energy, I also came back with new ideas and new teaching techniques to try. These things I had picked up due to watching online tennis videos. I hope MAC Members are enjoying or will enjoy being back at the Club and on the tennis courts as much as I am!

AMANDA PRATZEL

Most of the kids I work with hoped to go back to school for in-person learning in the fall, but, unfortunately that didn’t happen for most. The freshmen were especially anxious to start school and have a “normal” first year of high school and the chance to play on the tennis team. Now that the schools are offering some form of tennis, the kids are really excited. I’m glad they get to be a part of a team. The kids that aren’t in high school are so happy that they can still play tennis because most of their other activities have been canceled this fall. As a coach, it’s great being able to help them through this time and try to give them some sort of normalcy and fun! I can’t help them with their chemistry homework, but I can at least help them with tennis.

PATRICK MCNALLY

I utilized a merry-go-round formation so the kids would move in a circle around me and would feed the tennis balls to them to minimalize them touching different equipment. I also created stations to keep the tots spaced apart. It was challenging because I had to do more demonstrations with the tots due to limited hand-on restrictions.

SCOTT STUTZ

Having been on the tennis staff for 20+ years at the MAC, this year has proven to be a challenge in many ways from Club closure to having to wear masks to limited group size, etc. But as an employee of the MAC, if I’ve learned anything, we will persevere through this as a Club. There’s nothing we can’t overcome! MAC Strong.

MAX SHAPIRO

I’ve worked at the MAC for more than 10 years now, and this has been the most challenging six months for both Members and staff at the Club. I think it has been amazing that we’ve been able to provide a safe environment for kids and adults to continue to play tennis through the pandemic. This hasn’t been the most traditional summer but the perseverance from both the Members and staff has brought out the Club spirit in the MAC.

MOMENTS THAT BUILD SUCCESS Success is built on unwavering principle and the support of a good team. We’re proud to be a long-standing supporter of the Missouri Athletic Club, where lifetime friendships are built and strengthened every day. As you forge your path, we’ll be here to support you every step of the way. NEW CONSTRUCTION // REHAB // REFINANCE // WORKING CAPITAL

Richard Elias

This month, the highlighted player is Richard Elias, who currently takes private instruction from tennis pro, Scott Stutz, and participates in the men’s league on Wednesday evenings. Elias credits his rise in the USTA rankings to the tennis staff at the MAC! As spotlight player, Elias wanted to improve his game and move up to a higher level, one thing that was missing was a strong backhand volley since he noticed he had many opportunities to finish the point at the net, but came up short. The backhand volley can be one of the weaker shots for many many players! Although it can be frustrating

trying to apply technique and mechanics you have learned during practice, but he set out to improve this part of his game and along the way absorbed some bumps and bruises and in the end, it proved to be a good decision. Although started with a USTA 3.0 team and is now on the roster of a 4.0 USTA team. Way to go Rich! Elias joined the MAC in 2015 with his wife Martille, who also participates in tennis at the MAC, and children Annie, Richard, August and Evie. He is partner at Elias LLC.

Racquet Sports: In Full Swing TRY A NEW WAY TO SQUASH Introducing a new English racquet sport to try out at the courts — Squash 57, named that due to the diameter of the ball. This is a growing game in the UK. Players use a bigger, racket and a bigger, bouncier ball. The extra bounce means there’s more time to get to the ball, so expect a lot of fun as you get engrossed in a long rally. Squash 57 is a nice halfway house between squash and US racquetball.

SQUASH SKILLS CHALLENGE

Who has the skills to pay the bills? The MAC Squash juniors were set some racquet skills and fitness challenges. Racquet skills challenges included figure eights, target hitting and court sprints, which were all timed for a minute. The juniors all improved over the few weeks. Henry Byrne and Eli Paul were neck-and-neck in the competition, but Byrne topped the leader board by a few extra targets and running a quick 20 court sprints in 49.19 seconds (with sunburnt feet) to Paul’s 49.25 seconds (speculation on accuracy of the stopwatch). When the MAC returns to squash, a good alternative to gameplay, keeping distance, and honing in on your skills is solo practice. Solo is a great way of enhancing your racquet skills and can be combined with “ghosting,” which is where players practice movement patterns simulating a rally. There are solo drills written up by the courts, and Squash Director, Alex Ingham, would be happy to demonstrate and help you get started. Reach him by email at aingham@mac-stl.org or 314-539-4484.

GOOD FOUNDATIONS Project to Restore the Downtown Clubhouse Nears Completion

The exterior renovations on the Downtown Clubhouse are nearing completion. The project began earlier this year as part of the Building on Tradition Campaign to restore and beautify the Downtown Clubhouse. This project was made possible through a grant from the Robert J. Trulaske Jr. Family Foundation and generous donations from our Members to the Building on Tradition Fund and at the Preservation Foundation Ball, which took place

earlier this year on Feb. 15. Thank you to the many generous Members who were integral in making this project a possibility. These renovations on the exterior of the building are taking place on both the eastern and southern-facing elevations. This project includes tuckpointing, power washing, wood windows, metal rails, window lintel and sills, terra cotta, granite and limestone. Other work includes masonry cleaning and brick water repellent.

Leaving a Legacy

AFTER

Do You Have a Will? An Estate Plan? Amazingly, more than 50 percent of adults in the United States do not have a will or an estate plan, and many wills and estate plans have not been updated in many years. Writing wills and estate plans and updating them takes time and can be expensive, but one easy and inexpensive way to ensure that your heirs and favorite charities receive assets at the time of your death is through beneficiary designations. Beneficiary designations are easy to make and easy to change. In order to leave a lasting legacy here at your Club, please consider designating the MAC or one of its three foundations (Preservation, Sports and Arts) as a beneficiary on one of your retirement accounts (IRAs, 401ks, 403bs, etc.) or a life insurance policy.

A NIGHT

Fit for a Princess

The iconic Father-Daughter Banquet dates back to the early years of the MAC and has remained a favorite event since then. On Wednesday, Aug. 12, fathers and grandfathers left their houses to escort their daughters and granddaughters to a fairytale evening at the annual Father-Daughter

Banquet at the Downtown Clubhouse. The magic began on a fun note with horsedrawn carriage rides around downtown along with a cocktails and kiddie cocktails,

photographs and balloon art while children’s movies played in the Art Lounge. Afterward, dinner and dancing rounded out an enchanting night.

Lawyers' Group Brings Laughs

As events are slowly reintroduced to the MAC, the MAC’s Lawyers’ Group and Mark Twain Society jumped at the chance to get together at the Downtown Clubhouse, which brought the idea of a Lawyers’ Group Steak Dinner and Joke Contest. The night began with a cocktail reception in the Eads Room as Members mingled after their long absence. Next, Past President Tom Albus gave a welcoming speech to Members and passed out a sheet of all the submitted jokes, asking attendees to choose their favorite three, which would be later voted on by the group. Then, Chef Bart and his team prepared a three-course meal consisting of spicy beet-cured salmon with ricotta cheese, blood oranges, baby beets and rye crisp for the first course; bourbon stout-braised short ribs with spicy cheddar grits, harissa roasted root vegetables, pickled onions with black currant jus; and amber chocolate with dark chocolate mousse, apricot compote, chocolate flourless sponge and toasted almond ice cream for dessert. Next, attendees were asked to share any lawyer-related jokes they had not submitted. After several members shared their jokes or anecdotes, it was time for the main event. Members had narrowed down the jokes to the ones submitted by Gary Sextro, Peter Dunne, Chris Lawhorn and John Kingston. After dramatic readings of these jokes, Sextro was announced as the victor of the night.
