A long Journey with Brudy Hummel by Sonia Parera-Hummel1

Can you imagine how a mother feels when she is told that her only son is not “normal”. That he is different from his sister and therefore cannot attend a “normal” school but has to receive “special” education? This devastating news was shared to my husband and me in 1992. At that time, my family and I were living in Veendam – The Netherlands. Brudy, our son, was 4 years old and for some month had been attending a Kindergarten. For me, he was just a normal boy. Indeed he used to be on his own, he kept repeating things, was quite naughty – just like other children at his age. I think I just wanted to see the bright side of my son and closed my eyes to his shortcomings. In the Kindergarten, the teachers were more objective. They observed that Brudy was not developing like his friends. They sought advice from a psychologist, who then diagnosed Brudy as being autistic. After this was communicated to us, I couldn’t pay much attention any more to the explanations about autism by the psychologists and psychiatrists we consulted. What I had heard was enough to imagine what this meant for Brudy: surely, he had to leave this “normal” Kindergarten and visit a “special” one. He would always depend on us and others, for he couldn't take care of himself. Thousands of horrible pictures came to my mind: Brudy will be excluded by other children. They might even ridicule and harm him. He will be helpless and nobody will want him. He could never get married and would be very unhappy and lonely all of his life. My heart was bleeding; I was shattered. Often, when Brudy was asleep, I would sit besides his bed, watch him and cry. Until one night, he suddenly opened his eyes and looked at me and asked: “Mama, why are you crying?” He then held me long and tight, then went back to sleep peacefully. His question that night touched me in a special way. I determined then not to treat him as a helpless son. He shouldn't just live in his own world – as autistic persons normally do. He must go out and mingle with others. He will get our maximum attention and love, so that he will be able to love others – and others cannot do otherwise but like him in return. Uwe, 1

Rev. Sonia Parera-Hummel is Executive Secretary for Asia in UEM. She is married to Rev. Dr. Uwe Hummel. Together, they have two children: Thea Hummel and Brudy Hummel.

Thea and I then treated Brudy as “normal” as possible. He had to help us in the household, we brought him along to our activities, he was reprimanded when doing something wrong and received our praise when he did things beyond expectation.

We prayed a lot and sought advice from the experts. In 1994, we struggled with the question: “would it be helpful for Brudy if we moved to Nias to serve the church there? In the Netherlands he was already receiving a good education. The Dutch society is open enough to receive people like him. Then, came again that horrible fear that he might be excluded by the Niasan community. Unexpectedly, exactly on Nias Brudy developed extremely well. Attending a Catholic Kindergarten, a young priest from Timor took good care of him. Brudy had a lot of friends, not only at school, but also in our church – the BNKP. He used to be invited for tea in the office of former Ephorus Hulu; he used to have lunch in the house of our neighbour, former General Secretary Rev. L Gulö. During the weekends, our students from the Theological Seminary took him along to their villages, where he was treated kindly by other children and the communities. In short, Brudy was more popular on Nias than his parents and sister. The rickshaw drivers, who used to clean their rickshaws near our house, were his special friends. Brudy often helped them to clean their rickshaws and in return, they used to take him for a ride around Gunungsitoli town for free. Brudy once uttered his intention to become a rickshaw-driver one day. Unfortunately, we had to return to Germany, where no rickshaws where used in public transport.

Why do I share this personal story with you? “Disabled persons”, or more correctly said: “persons with different abilities”, are part of us. They will always be around us. They are born into our families, they are the children of our neighbours, and they may even be our colleagues in our work places. The way we treat them has an immense influence in their lives. We could harm them and make their lives miserable. Or we accept them as dignified members of our communities, which will mean a lot to them, to their families, even to ourselves. One may say that Brudy is “not normal”. But can a normal boy remember the name of a village on Nias, which he visited only once, 20 years ago? What “normal” person could remember the name of the pastor, who preached on a specific Sunday and even quote from memory parts of the sermon? Can a normal boy or girl show the direction to an address he or 4

she once visited 24 years ago in a crowded and complicated city like Hamburg? Brudy is able to do that easily. Today, Brudy lives on his own in an apartment in Wuppertal – Germany, which he hires with the salary he earns. He cares for himself, cooks, cleans the flat, and goes shopping on his own. When he drives a car, you can enjoy the ride, for he drives extremely carefully and quite calm, even on a busy street. He belongs to a theatre group, is a faithful church-goer and frugally saves his money for his annual holidays.

Probably you have the impression that this is one of those success stories. The truth is, we as a family suffered a lot ever since we were told about the “abnormality” of our son and brother. Just like other parents in such a situation, we were disappointed and struggled with thousand questions. We even questioned the justice and love of God. We were depressed when people were unfriendly and ridiculed our son. It was extremely difficult to nurture and train him. It was hard not to hurt him unconsciously and it was hard not to neglect the need of his three years older sister. We are thankful for our close friends and families in Germany, Ambon, Netherlands, and Nias. They love Brudy the way he is. This makes us finally realize that God has a purpose and chose us for this task, which may also be called a special mission. The idea to start a “special class” for “children with special abilities and needs” was born when I was entrusted to become the head of the BNKP Kindergarten “Hanna Blindow” in Gunungsitoli. It came from my own experience and my yearning to make other children be accepted with open arms by the community. They should never be excluded. They need us, but they also have special talents and abilities which so-called normal people may lack and need. It is therefore a lost if these “special” children and adults are marginalized because of their “otherness”. In fact, if we want, we can embrace them and make them inseparable persons in our lives. Believe me, they are able also to change us to be more patient, loving and human. The smile, the hugs, the understanding and acceptance that we give them will mean a lot to their families and they will be part of our lives. God has intention with every person that is born on this earth. May your world and mine is not pale but colourful like beautiful rainbow, for we give spaces to all: young and old, small and big, normal and special.

2.Patnership 2.1. Internship Program of GKPM Youth at GKJTU-Sion By: Rev. Tulus One of the partnership forms between GKJTU and GKPM is by sending two young people from Mentawai to GKJTU-Sion, Java for an internship program. They have learned on how to hold a business of cattle for almost two months. They were Sihol and Betricado. This internship program had been conducted from 1st November until 16 December 2014. The objective of the internship is to train the GKPM youth to acquiare skills in managing the cattle business. They are being prepared by the GKPM to manage the cattle business in Mentawai because until now it is very rare to find cattle business in Mentawai. The 2 (two) youths were learning and practising on how to manage the cattle. Incidentally for more than 10 years already the GKJTU has assisted some groups of farmers in the congregation, they are dairiy cows and beef cattle throughout Zion Foundation. And not only that, since 2005 the foundation also estabilished a cattle ranch in Zion as a way to learn and as fundraising campaign for Sion Foundation. The success of cattle ranchers are influenced by six factors, namely: seeds, cages, sustainer, feed, health, and markets. The sixth factors must be discovered by the farmers. If they do not know exactly one factor, they will not get an optimal percentage, i.e; they should know on what are the superior seeds, qualified cages, abundant food, healthy cows, milk guaranteed. But if famers are not able to produce a good cow, the cow will not produce its milk fat and the result is not gratifying. Conversely, if the cages are good, and the seeds are not good, the cows will grow slowly. Throughout the two-month internship program, we offered 6 materials with various methods, such as; 1. Theory, the topic is about selecting good seeds, making a healthy cage, processing animal feed, cattle maintenance eingineerring, mechanical sewage treatment, about disaster 2. Practise in a cowshed owned by Sion-GKJTU Such as; Making food technology (eg: Fermentation, ammoniation, concentrates, chewing cow, etc.), Making stables images, milking cows Practice, processing waste and BIOGAS, raising cattle Practice. 3.Oberservation /visit to the animal market in Sunggingan – Boyolali ( it is the largest dairy cattle markets in Central Java), visit to animals market in Ambarawa (one of the largest beef market in Central Java), visit to some cattle farmers owned by Sion Foundation, visit to ranch dairy cows in Rowo happy – waterford (one of the best dairy farms in Central Java owned by the Catholic Church, visit to cattle farm in Temanggung (One of dairy farms owned by Husbandry Department in Central Java) In addition we also provided materials about goat farming and mushroom farming, which is placed next to the goat farm and mushroom farm owned by GKJTU-Sion

2.2 Encouraged to be a Partner-Giver By: Rev. Marudur Siahaan / Partnership Officer in Asia

On Friday, 28 Feb. 2014, HKBP has held a Partnership meeting at Ebeneser Bibelvrouw Pension Center, Sinaksak Pematang Siantar. This meeting was attended by 30 people, such as the General secretary of HKBP, the Partnership officer of UEM Asia, the Partnership Secretary of HKBP, Praeses, Director of HKBP Institutions, the Representatives of HKBP Institutions and Districts who are involved in partnership work or for district/institution who has partner Church/Institution among UEM members. From this meeting HKBP was really motivated and encouraged to be a giver. The General Secretary of HKBP also strongly supported the ideal partnership of mutual giving and not to stick out as a receiver only. Actually HKBP has been trying to implement the system of being a giver, but it still needs to be enhanced as well. Partnership must evolve towards a better partnership than before. Some need to be improved; when both church/Institution are implementing an activity or project, they cover the expenses by their contributions even in different amounts. And HKBP can improve the partnership for those who have already done this kind of partnership as well as on how HKBP maintain the partnership activities that lingers in the district or even at the HKBP institutions with and without the financial contributions of its partners. During this meeting all delegates from districts and partners provided a brief report on the situation and the activities of each partnership and synchronize the information from partners in Germany through the minutes of the recent partnership meeting held in Germany. One topic that became a discussion during this meeting is about the Preparation of HKBP to hold a Partnership Consultation which routinely held every five years. In 2010 Partnership Consultation had been carried out in Germany, in other words in 2015 HKBP will be holding partnership consultation in Indonesia which is planned to be held in Balige in July 2015. Nevertheless, it is only a plan of HKBP and it still needs to be discussed with partners in Germany. Because indeed this is the life of partnership which have a mutual respect and accept one another. May God bless all plans to gain a fruitful partnership.

and the evangelism in Keerom. Therefore they expected donation of Bible in Java language and Pasamuwan song. This is a great partnership program wherein the support from all parties are expected. Hopefully all plans can be realized for the glory of God.

2.4. The Youth for Children program in Germany under the HKI-Hamm Partnership Rev. Marudur Siahaan – UEM Asia Partnership Officer After a successful Youth for Children (YfC) program held in August 2012 in Pematang Siantar, the HKI-Hamm partnership groups have planned to hold similar program in Germany to focus as well on the theme: Climate Protection. Through this, the two partners can learn from each other through seeing the difference of the life and situations between Indonesia and Germany. In preparation for this program, the HKI has held a meeting on Saturday, January 25th, 2014 at Pematang Siantar, HKI Head Office, as attended by 10 participants. Among those who attended were the Ephorus of HKI, the Head of HKI Diakonia Department, the UEM Asia Partnership staff and the HKI youth participants to YfC 2012 and the next YfC in Germany. In that meeting, an evaluation on the Youth for Children in August 2012 in Pematang Siantar was taken up. It is observed that the participants have really appreciated such Youth for Children Program in 2012. They have found it very meaningful as they get to know other churches outside their church, including the other poor churches in HKI as well as the churches in Germany within Hamm District. The experience was really good as it helped raise their awareness and to make them closer with the children. The YfC has helped them to learn on how to engage with groups. The HKI youth could experience about German culture as well as get to know UEM and other international activities. It was indeed an opportunity for HKI youth to share with the German youth about their church in Indonesia. Hamm, as a partner of HKI, became more known among the local churches of HKI through this program. It has raised the youth’s awareness on cleanliness, to teach people by doing, etc. As a practicum, the participants have done an environmental protection activity through plastic recycling, etc. After the evaluation, we proceeded with the preparation for the upcoming Youth for Children program in September 2014 in Hamm, Germany. The participants are really enthusiastic and we have agreed on the idea that the HKI participants will be responsible for their own pocket money in Germany as well as their own local transport in Indonesia. The HKI Participants have expressed their readiness to experience different food and weather in Germany. The HKI 9

participants will abide with all the activities of the YfC in Germany even to stay in a tent. They are very grateful for this opportunity. They are strongly motivated, even wrote their personal commitment, to this program. Generally, the HKI in Indonesia greatly supports this program. We do pray for its success for God’s glory.

3.Diaconia 3.1. The Services of Alpha Omega among the Refugees of Mount Sinabung Eruption Rev. Mestika N.Ginting / Director of Alpha Omega

Ricard Sitepu dan Janto Ginting (warga pengungsi disable yang dititipkan di Alpha Omega)

Early in the morning of September 15, 2013 the sky was still dark and the weather was cold, Mount Sinabung has suddenly erupted and forced the villagers to quickly evacuate to Kabanjahe. At that time the youth disaster response of GBKP was holding a board meeting at GBKP-Retreat Center in Sukamakmur (about 25 kilometers away from Kabnjahe). After being informed about the eruption, they immediately went to Kabanjahe to help evacuate the victims of the eruption.

The Rev. Augustinus Purba, Head of Diaconia Department of GBKP, had immediately rushed to Kabanjahe to lead in the emergency briefing and in setting up some refugee camps. The Director of Alpha Omega, who is based in Kabanjahe, has heard the panic of people and observed how crowded Kabanjahe was. Then he phoned Rev. Agustinus after getting the news of the Mount Sinabung eruption and offered to provide help, if needed. Then Rev. Agustinus asked YKPC Alpha Omega to provide any available food to the refugees who would be dispatched to Alpha Omega. Because the number of refugees was getting more and more, the Head of Diaconia Department of GBKP, Rev. Agustinus Purba, has asked Masehi School of GBKP, Alpha Omega and the Abdi Karya printing house to coordinate the Kabanjahe Kota Post. Until March 12, 2014 Alpha Omega has taken care of 1125 people from 339 families who are accommodated at six (6) houses for women and children, and five (5) camps for men. Alpha Omega has provided three (3) big buildings for the refugees such as the Chapel, the Physiotherapy room, and the Showroom for 467 people (consisting of 194 families) and the Carpentry Room for the logistics and administration office at once. Furthermore, Alpha 10

Omega also accepted two (2) refugees with disability and they are placed and treated like other children of Alpha Omega. Although the logistical supply and the needs of the refugees are provided by the GBKP Kabanjahe Kota post in cooperation with the main post of GBKP, the situation gives some impact to Alpha Omega, namely: 1. It is a joy and pride for Alpha Omega to serve people who need help from Alpha Omega. Although Alpha Omega still needs help from others for the sustainability of Alpha Omega 2. Before, there were so many people who came to visit Alpha Omega and gave their assistance to Alpha Omega, especially during the Christmas season. But now the attention of people are focused to the refugees of Mount Sinabung. Consequently this has made a decrease of donations for Alpha Omega. 3. When the refugees stayed at Alpha Omega for the first time, it hampered the normal services of Alpha Omega. But God gave wisdom and compassion to the Alpha Omega Board and finally the class could be transferred temporarily to other conducive places. The presence of the refugees with varieties of character and the ensuing panic felt by the refugees have disturbed drastically the normal operation of Alpha Omega especially when the children get to interact with the refugees. But eventually the communication got better through the adaptation process. The refugees could learn to be in solidarity with the children of Alpha Omega and the staff. Slowly they got closer and the refugees would sometimes help the children of Alpha Omega. Until now the alert level of Mount Sinabung is still on high alert (level IV) wherein it is still dangerous for people to come closer to the volcano. We still do not know until when the refugees are allowed to go home. That is why Alpha Omega really hopes for the support from brother and sisters for the following needs: - Inventory: Alpha Omega has to repair and replace the damaged inventories which are used by the refugees like Physiotherapy equipment, chairs, tables, mats, bathroom equipment and so forth. - Water: Alpha Omega has to upgrade the water reservoir tank in order to adequately supply the water needs of Alpha Omega and the refugees - Electricity: Alpha Omega has to pay the increased consumption of electricity.

11

This is all Alpha Omega could pour out its sentiments particularly the impact to its normal services amid providing services to the refugees of Mount Sinabung Eruption. May it be useful to all readers and the observers of Alpha Omega. God Bless us always.

3.2. Close Meeting of PLWHA assisted by GBKP By: Ria Lumbangaol / UEM Consultant on HIV in Indonesia On March 10th, 2014, the HIV AIDS Commission of GBKP held a close meeting of PLWHA assisted by GBKP at the Women Training Center in Berastagi. The agendas of this meeting are sharing of knowledge, sharing of experiences, and support mechanism among PLWHA. This is the first sharing for them as conducted by the GBKB-HIV AIDS Commission. Currently GBKP provides services to 25 PLWHA and most of them have already undergone the HIV treatment. The sharing was led by the Head of GBKP AIDS Commission Mr.Bestari and the Secretary Rev. Mona Ginting together with the UEM AIDS Consultant dr.Ria Lumbangaol. The topics being discussed in a casual manner include such issues like how does the virus work on your body, aren’t HIV and AIDS the same thing, how does the immune system work after the viruses enter your body, how do the confidentiality of HIV and AIDS, asymptomatic period, when the treatment is started, how to tell others and how is the sex life after becoming infected. During the sharing of experiences we have talked about their feelings especially when they came to know that they are detected with the virus. There was one who almost committed suicide. Generally they could not understand why and it took time for them to accept this reality. And because of the HIV they get stigma and discrimination at home, at their work place, even from adat. The shelter of GBKP has been transferred to other places several times because the neighbourhood did not accept their presence. Indeed it is unfortunate because those who reject the program precisely are some GBKP members themselves. Socialization and dissemination of the right information about HIV and AIDS will help people to reduce stigma and discrimination. This sharing has stirred the awareness among them to take a healthy lifestyle and the passion to stay healthy. The way to stay healthy is open to them for as long as they are willing to restore themselves. The HIV AIDS commission of GBKP will try to arrange a sharing for ODHA regularly with a discussion of different topics and to hold it in various venues in order to get new

12

atmospheres. The PLWHA have admitted that they have gained a new enthusiasm to get on with their lives after being involved in this meeting. Looking forward to see you again in the next PLWHA sharing!

4. Development

4.1 Development / Integration of GBKP Koinonia Department "Improving the Quality of Qualified Human Resources" By: Rev. Erick J. Barus, D.Th / Head of Koinonia Department of GBKP

GBKP has launched “Improving the Quality of Qualified Human Resources” as it’s theme in 2014. There are two targets to achieve for this year, such as; the quantity and the quality of human resources which include the Pastors, church workers together with the members of congregations.

The theme can be interpreted that the services of GBKP in 2014 focuses towards increasing the number of churches and improve the quality of spirituality, intellectuality and morality of pastors and church workers. Hence the Koinonia Department of GBKP has conducted a debriefing program to all District Chairpersons and Heads of the Koinonia Department in the District level, the Categorical Fellowship and all units under GBKP’s Koinonia Department. The development / integration program was carried out for two days from 25th-26 February 2014 at Retreat Center GBKP Sukamakmur. Afterwards all delegations from the Districts will hold similar program at their own Districts to achieve the goal of improving the quantity of qualified human resources towards the mission of church.

13

GBKP had invited Rev. Armand Barus from Jakarta whose Paper stressed about the life guided by Jesus (Imitating Jesus). Head of GBKP Personnel Rev. Rosmalia Barus was also invited to speak deeply about GBKP’s theme in 2014. Rev. Dr. Robinson Butarbutar from HKBP and Rev. B.D. Sinulingga were also invited. His Paper talked about the academic and practical aspects and empirical review of Human Resources in relation to increasing the quantity of qualified human resources. At the end part of this activity all participants were divided into some groups to visit the refugees in Kabanjahe as dislocated by Mount Sinabung Eruption. Each group has made a small discussion and counseling session, and after that they had dinner with the refugees and joined the evening devotion in each refugee camp.

It is a very important program to all District Chairpersons and the Heads of Koinonia Department in all Districts to continually sustain and integrate this program into the annual theme of GBKP up to the grassroots level.

4.2. Be Joyful Always By: Mawarisa Purba / Volunteer from GKPS in Tanzania My name is Mawarisa Purba, I am a Pastor from Indonesia of the Simalungun Protestant Christian Church (GKPS). I am a UEM South-South Volunteer batch 2013 placed in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. I have been here since August 2013. I stay with a Tanzanian Family, with a very kind widow. I feel Lucky to stay with this Family because I can learn their culture, and I get the chance to join her family activity. They also have some kind of ethnic identity like my country Indonesia. I felt so hard on my new situation in the beginning of my stay here. But now I am comfortable of everything in here. Tanzanian people are friendly, warm and open minded.

14

They like to greet people if we meet them on the street even with people whom they don’t know exactly. Sometimes I felt funny because they always assume all Asians are Chinese. So almost every day when I go to work and I meet them, they always call me “Eee Mchina/ Hei Chinese”. Now I am used to hear such call, and so I just smile when they called me Chinese. But sometimes when I have time, I tell them that I come from Indonesia. I am working at Msasani Parish. The Parish belongs to ELCT (Eastern Lutheran Church in Tanzania). The Parish has about 2500 members, one Pastor, two Parish workers, one Evangelist and 32 elders. It also has Nursery school/Kindergarten. On Monday to Friday I work as Kindergarten teacher. Msasani Nursery school has 47 students consisted of two teachers. We are three teachers. Our students ages between 2-7 years old. They generally come from poor families, and some of them do not pay the school fee because of economic problem. Msasani Church allows them to come to school without paying any school fee, because it is a diaconia program of the church. The situation in our kindergarten school is very simple. We do not have classrooms for study. We use the old Church building for class sessions. We do not have small chairs and tables. We only have a blackboard and church bench for sitting. Sometimes I feel pity for them because it is difficult for them to write without tables. But we are lucky because we have a large yard so our students can play outside. Even though we just have a few facilities, but they look happy. Even me, I’m always happy. Every morning when the kids saw me, they would run to the church gate and come and hug me, and then they would say “Shikamo Mwalimu” which means “How are you teacher?” When I see them smile, I feel I get a new enthusiasm. I teach English and teach them on how to write. I also teach them new songs. Sometimes I would translate Indonesian songs to Kiswahili language to make them more understandable. As a teacher I also have to prepare stationery because some of them don’t have pencil or eraser. I had an experience when one of our students was sick and we visited her. She got malaria. And I could see their living conditions wherein many of them live in a bad environment. They don’t have clean water. Sometimes we can see one house consisting of two or three families living together to save money, because they don’t have money to rent a house. On Sunday I teach in the Sunday School. Msasani Parish has two classes of Sunday school; the English class and the Kiswahili class. I taught many songs. And every month, in the third week, I help the Msasani Pastor to serve the Holy communion. I remembered last November when the first time I had helped the Pastor, I was so nervous because at that time we had both the Holy Communion and the “Ibada ya Kipaimara/ Confirmation”. I had to memorize the words of blessing for “Ibada ya Kipaimara.” During Holy Communion I didn’t smile because I was nervous and panicky. Suddenly one of them who received “Ibada ya 15

Kipaimara” saw me, he whispered and said “Sister, please don’t forget to smile”, and finally at that time I would smile. I am thankful to God who gave me this opportunity through UEM, so I can meet new families, stay with them, sharing life together. I got many experiences, and all of them reminded me to be always grateful to God and be joyful in all situations. Please continue to pray for me so I can do this task well for the glory of His Name.

In this framework, partnerships and networking are necessary to increase the capacity in order to overcome the weaknesses; expand all opportunities to confront the threats. GKJTU always opens to have partners with the principle of equality, mutuality, openness, and respect to the differences of each side. GKJTU always opens to share all the talents possessed in order to be meaningful for others. Sustainability are the dynamics of two partnership desks to welcome a superiorly future.

7. About Us Mission Spark used to be published quarterly as a printed Magazine. In our desire to reach many readers expeditiously, we had started in September 2012 its publication in electronic form. It got published monthly. Indeed, as surfed in our website and sent out via email, Mission Spark has been accessed and read anytime by interested readers within and beyond Asia.

Due to Asia Department’s desire to be coherent with UEM Corporate Identity, the Mission Spark is a bit redesigned and launches it last January 2014 edition. Noticeably, the five integral working areas of UEM – evangelism, diaconia, development, advocacy and partnership – serve as the bases of the reports, ideas and information concerning UEM and the Member-Churches’ programs and activities in the Asia Region.

We covet our readers and recipients’ continued patronage and support to Mission Spark as we unceasingly work hard to cater to the readers’ interests and welcome their helpful feedback. This we do together for the glory of God and in the service of God’s people in Asia and everywhere.
