The overwhelming response of all the memberchurches in Asia to our recent campaign to provide emergency aid to GBKP (Mt. Sinabung eruption in Karoland, Indonesia) and UCCP (Typhoon Yolanda/Haiyan in Visayas, Philippines) was evidently unprecedented and therefore indicative of the emerging spirit of stronger solidarity among us as a Communion. In November and December 2013 alone, UEM Medan Office had received an emergency aid of IDR 107,105,000.00 for GBKP and IDR 247,129,288.00 for UCCP. This is first time to happen in Asia Region. Indeed, in times of great challenge, we in Asia have displayed our United Action.

“Over recent years, UEM income has been stable both from member fees and donations. But this will change within the next few years. German churches are facing diminishing incomes, and as the donor base for mission work in Germany is aging and diminishing. So far most of the finances for UEM work have been provided by the German members in terms of contributions and project funding, while Africa and Asia contribute less than 1.5 % to the UEM budget.” (Quoted from UEM „United Action‟s Brochure).

Likewise, early this 2014, Asia Department is initiating a major activity wherein we shall “walk the talk.”

The “United Action” United Action Logo Campaign, its basic idea, is to develop consecutive campaigns for fundraising which strongly focus on UEM ownership of all churches. These campaigns will run under the label “United Action” and have a clear thematic focus. Each campaign will raise funds for the UEM budget and cover projects and programs as well as UEM operational costs. Donations will be raised through collections in churches (e.g. during UEM Sunday and UEM Week), and other means. Each campaign will run for 2 to 3 years with a clearly defined thematic focus.

On 6th February, a “Walk a Mile” celebratory campaign is going to be held in the Batakland, the land where the „footsteps‟ of early missionaries dispatched by the Rhenish Mission Society (RMG) have tread on over 150 years ago. Those „missionary footsteps‟ have „rooted‟ and bore fruits tremendously through the massive conversion of local populace and eventually the establishment of varied congregations and churches as nurtured immensely for the task of continuous mission up to the present time under the banner of the United Evangelical Mission (UEM).

a brainchild of Rev. Sonia Parera-Hummel and is positively welcomed by the HKBP Ephorus, Rev. Willem TP Simarmata, who is concurrently the UEM Vice-Moderator from Asia Region. Thus, the HKBP readily accepts as the hosting Church for this maiden attempt.

The “Walk a Mile” (WaM) -- with Huria Kristen Batak Protestan (HKBPas the hosting Church this 2014 -- is conceived as a celebration and a campaign.

HKBP Sigumpar is chosen as the venue of this commemoration in recognition of the place‟s significance in the life of Dr. Nommensen. It is here where he had served longer until his ultimate return to our Creator.

A celebration, because it expresses the thanksgiving and collective reaffirmation of the member-churches in North Sumatra to a continuing journey of faith and mission as trail-blazed by earlier missionaries notably by DR. LUDWIG INGWER NOMMENSEN – acclaimed as the “Apostle of the Bataks.”

Moreover, to emphasize the importance of this endeavor, no less than the current UEM Moderator (Regina Buschmann) graces the occasion together with the UEM Deputy General Secretary (Juergen Borchardt), the Head of Asia Department (Rev. Sonia Parera-Hummel) and the other prominent Church Leaders in the Batakland from GKPI, GKPS, GKPA, GBKP, GKPPD and HKI.

A campaign, for it symbolically launches in the Batakland the UEM „United Action‟ plan as agreed upon in Hongkong during the AsRA 2013. The campaign envisions to raise considerable sum of money to eventually support UEM‟s continuing work for God‟s mission through and along with its member-churches in the three continents and beyond.

Hopefully, the „birthing‟ of this practice would encourage those who seriously follow Nommensen‟s missionary footsteps to mark every 6th of February as an ongoing „tradition‟ – an annual festival to celebrate together our joys and re-new our unwavering commitment for God‟s continuing mission as expressed in UEM‟s zeal and work in evangelism, diaconia, development, advocacy and partnership.

region. They met to advance the Triple Zero vision and translate it into policy and practice. In addition to sharing of experience at ICAAP I also learn about many things, and build networking with different organizations engaged in HIV / AIDS.

ICAAP invited the HIV Consultant of UEM as one of the speakers to share experiences particularly on how to enable and increase the participation of church leaders in the AIDS response.

Program Structure: The ICAAP consists of Plenary Session, Oral Session, E Poster, E Poster Discussion, Symposia, Satellite Meeting, Skill Building Workshops, Asia Pacific Village and Pre Congress Community Forums. Nearly 600 presentations were given in the ICAAP,

It is also a religious mandate to bring dignity, fullness of life and sustainable community to all. From this perspective is the involvement in understanding, forgiveness, reconciliation and unity.

For that, the HIV Consultant chose the theme of science and advocacy skills, and skills training modules on latest HIV / AIDS delivery such as Innovative Contribution of Young Religious Leaders towards the Triple Zero, Save Tool Kit, Key Affected Women and Girls, Getting to Zero in the Workplace and Migrant Worker, Strengthening Policy and Advocacy Skill of Sexuality Education for Young People. Hopefully all these experiences, knowledge and skills being gained have provided the UEM HIV Consultant with professional development to enhance her work towards empowering the churches in HIV and AIDS response.

With the theme „Prevent HIV/AIDS, Protect Workers, Family and Nation” the International AIDS Day brought the individuals and organizations together from around the world to raise the profile of the global AIDS epidemic. It is related to the global AIDs program “Getting To Zero, Zero AIDs related deaths, zero

There are about 80 percent of adults aged 15 to 49 years living with HIV/AIDs, most of them are students and workers. If we could do to avoid getting AIDS or could find ways of preventing AIDS, it would be a tremendous phase for the future. Pondok Kasih also held a post of HIV testimony. Before getting the test they might have a counseling with counselors who explain the process and answer questions about HIV. The Pondok Kasih Board also took the HIV Test as a campaign to perceive the state of conscience and health. As a symbol of awareness of HIV/AIDS, the government, communities, non-governmental, private sector, state enterprises and students put their signatures on a 15meter banner, and afterward some red ribbons, brochures and flowers were handed out by local committee along the main streets of Siantar.

Sixty Hope in Tumaini, Tanzania Development

Written By Bertua Kristina Elisabeth Silalahi South-South Volunteer in Tumaini, Tanzania as a volunteer, I was the alumni of France Literature at Padang State University. Then I had worked as an administrative assistant at a hotel owned by my family.

My name is Bertua Kristina Elisabeth Silalahi. I was born on 10th February 1986. I come from Christian Protestant Angkola Church (GKPA) in Padangsidimpuan, Indonesia. I started my volunteer program since August 2013 in Tumaini Children‟s Center Bukoba, a Non-Government Organization under the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania (ELCT). Before I started my performance

The first two months of serving as volunteer became a period of adaptation with the food, neighborhood, language, and the weather in Bukoba, Tanzania. The weather is similar to Indonesia, but throughout the month of May, June, July and November, the daytime temperatures would generally reach high. About food, most of them are new to me. In Indonesia I eat rice, but in Tanzania, the major staple food is cooked bananas (Ndizi), Ugali (made from maize flour), and its side dish is like a side dish to be eaten with white rice in Indonesia. I initially felt strange to eat banana with fish, eggplant and red beans, but now I absolutely fell in love with them. Moreover, I am glad to eat chili and small fish as it is a kind of anchovies in my hometown. As I have mentioned before, I am working as volunteer at Tumaini Children‟s Center (TCC) in

of street children. TCC office is located in the heart of downtown Bukoba. There are about sixty children being rehabilitated because of poverty and domestic violence. Some are orphaned after their parents have died of HIV/AIDs. These children are missing their opportunity for education, are vulnerable to violence and disease, and are without access to health care. They are fundamentally denied their rights as children by the demands of living a life of survival on the streets. TCC becomes temporary home, helps them in terms of counseling, recovering, and integrating back with their families, TCC also helps them to attend school and let them to have health services.

In October 2013 I began to serve as a volunteer teacher in Memkwa. It is a special class for children who are late to their formal class. They are between 8-16 years old. I taught math and drawing. They are very active in learning. I was so happy to see their enthusiasm and high spirit. From them, I learn about homeliness. I was touched to see a child when she cut a little piece of biscuit, but she still shared it with her neighbor. Time goes by so fast and I am looking forward to work here for the remaining 6 months. Even though I miss my family in Padangsidimpuan, but I hope to stay longer here with the children. Even I will be back to my hometown they will always be in my prayers.

In the first month, I was involved in visiting some families in several villages wherein their children are supported by TCC. Normally I work with a field assistant. We distribute books, pens, toiletries; soap, toothpaste, toothbrush, and sugar. I can see the atmosphere of their houses, how could they live a humane life. No electricity, and the wall is made of clay/brick, and they sit on the floor being covered with rice straw.

I would like to say a thousand thanks to God by way of the United Evangelical Mission (UEM) who offered me this rare opportunity of being a SouthSouth Volunteer. Please pray that God will lead me to finish this volunteer program.

PARTNERSHIP VISIT TO GERMANY

After our arrival on April 27, we have enjoyed seeing the sort of local/traditional exhibition â&#x20AC;&#x153;Mirktzmartâ&#x20AC;? because we saw a lot of things about German life as lived hundred years ago. We have visited the head office of An der Agger District, got to know the partnership board and we had a sharing on partnership which became very meaningful for all the delegates. It was enjoyable to see the great interest among Kirchentag participants in Germany. We have visited the booth of UEM. We joined the interfaith dialog about Indonesia and the phenomena that occur to some churches in Java.

We have visited the Mission House of UEM in Wuppertal where we met Rev. Marudur Siahaan and Kristina Neubauer (the partnership officers of UEM Asia). Besides visiting the Archive of UEM and getting to hear and learn more about the workings of UEM, in the evening we were invited to attend the cultural night of GKPS. Taking part in the Women Circle was a great joy. Mrs. Ginting (from Dairi District) shared her experiences as a woman coordinator in Dairi District. Biblevrouw also shared her impression in leading the women circle of Medan-Aceh District. The women circle of our partner churches in Germany was particularly happy and almost ecstatic during the sharing. They regretted the form of their groups because only a few people joined and most of them were elder people. No less than had a talk every week about their weekly life without performing any choirs or attractive programs like Indonesian women circle did. This partnership visit really helps us to enrich our lives. It increases our knowledge and widens our perspective about partnership. We discover and learn many things from our partners and our interactions with the people. We are looking forward to a long lasting and mutually fruitful partnership.

On 18 December 2013 during the Christmas celebration, HKBP Silindung District distributed scholarship for 21 young people from Silindung District in HKBP-Pearaja for the regular category, it was around 1440 Euro for 21 awardees.

The Partnership between HKBP Silindung District and Koeln-Sued District has been on-going as established more than 20 years ago. Every year Koeln-Sued District from Germany supports Silindung District by sending fund for scholarship, water project, mass treatment, books etc

Church Youth Warns on Climate Change Impacts

The Youth of HKBP Church warns on the impact of climate change through simultaneous actions around the vicinity of Toba Lake. About 600 youths gathered in Porsea and Parapat, North Sumatra, Indonesia on December 7th, 2013 to take part in the global Climate Action Day. Hundreds of HKBP youth from Toba district have performed a long march as far as four (4) kilometers wearing masks from Porsea to the coastal area of Lake Toba. Along the way they collected the trash and conduct tree planting on the outskirts of Lake Toba. Another action, the HKBP Youth from Parapat did a theatrical performance by occupying a passanger ship at Toba Lake in Parapat waving big banners advocating "Save Tapanuli Forest" and Save Toba Lake Now!!!. The HKBP Youth action has enjoined the solidarity support of several local organizations such as Taman Eden, Radio Green Samosir, Earth Society (ES) Youth protest on forest degradation in Tapanuli at the climate youth action day on December 7th 2013 (Andi Siahaan)

for Danau Toba, Hubert Apartment, GOA, and KSPPM. The other actions done were the â&#x20AC;&#x153;freeing of fishesâ&#x20AC;? to the lake, and a tree planting at Tuktuk, Samosir Island. In his speech, the Chairman of the HKBP youth from Toba district, Jeffri Simangungsong, has stated that the action is done as a form of protest against the destruction of nature in Tapanuli, the contamination of Lake Toba and the endless air pollution in Porsea region which have affected the weather instability. "Not only at this action, it eems we have to wear a mask every day because of the air pollution emitted daily by the pulp company in the region," Jeffri asserted.

Meilisa Manurung, Parapat HKBP youth spokesperson, has expressed concern over the damage to the beauty of Lake Toba which resulted to reduced numbers of tourists and guests visiting the place. Meilisa complained about the lack of

serious efforts from the government of Indonesia, especially the North Sumatra Governor and the Regent of Simalungun, in protecting the environment and Lake Toba. Marandus Sirait, one of the initiators of the “Youth Action Day” in Parapat has stated that calls are more than enough, but no one listens. Marandus, the holder of the highest environmental award in Indonesia (Kalpataru) but returned the award to the President of the Republic of Indonesia, is calling for action on all parties to restore Lake Toba. Other initiator, Saurlin Siagian of Environment and Climate department of international institution UEM, has stated the limited time and opportunity to restore the man-made and natural damage to climate. "I am sure, as various scientists say, this generation has a very important contribution, whether to save the earth now, or not at all", he concluded.

The Ephorus who is very keen to campaign for restoring the nature, mourns on the lesser committment of the Indonesian Government to preserve Toba Lake and Tapanuli forests from degradation. He restated, ”We are on a ship, no one can leak the ship, otherwise we all sink. The youth is like a head of the spear, and I support totally every initiative of the youth in struggling and defending the nature,” the Ephorus declared. Another action being done by the Youth of GBKP and GKPS in Siantar on December 7th is dubbed “GarbageFree Day.” One of the youth, Yanti Sitepu from GBKP who was once a South-North Volunteer to Germany, has noted that Siantar used to be a nice city, but now is made ugly by the habit of people throwing trashes everywhere. “We want to warn the people and the government that the streets, rivers, and public spaces are not garbage dump. The Government should provide thrash bins and the people should throw the garbage properly on them,” she emphatically said.

“United Action” Concept for a Fundraising Campaign in Asia 2013

One of the key tenets of UEM Corporate Identity is that: “We manage the resources entrusted to us transparently and conscientiously and account for them together in faithful stewardship.” All members are givers and receivers. Over recent years, UEM income has been stable both from member fees and donations. But this will change within the next few years. Most of the finances for UEM work have been provided by the German members in terms of contributions and project funding, while Africa and Asia contribute less than 1.5 % to the UEM budget. Therefore the 2012 General Assembly in Berastagi has decided to embark on the United Action campaigns in order to increase significantly the contributions of the members in Asia and Africa. The goal is that by 2018, donations of 500,000 Euro per year will come from the Asian and African Regions (40 per cent from the African Region, 60 per cent from the Asian Region). In response thereof, the 2013 Asia Regional Assembly (AsRA) in Hong-Kong asks all churches to identify and apply the most appropriate means of fundraising in order to honor their pledges to contribute to the financial targets expected from the Asia Region (€30.000 in 2013, € 90.000 in 2014, € 150.000 in 2015, €210.000 in 2016, €270.000 in 2017, € 300.000 in 2018 and thereafter). Promise of Faith (Faith Promise) During the 2013 AsRA in Hong-kong, a Special Service was held. The delegates, staff and stewards were asked for a “Promise of Faith” as one‟s concrete response to the challenges of child poverty and trafficking in Asia. The promise is expressed through an amount each one pledges (in Rupiah, Peso, SL Rupee, HK$, Euro, etc.) This “promise of faith” is encouraged by AsRA to be a yearly pledge (2013, 2014 & 2015) as a personal contribution of the delegates for the United Action Campaign. Ten Thousand One (10001) Delightful Boxes Wanting to generate massive awareness and support from families, organizations and congregations of UEM members, the Church Leaders have pledged certain quotas of “delightful boxes per Church. The quotas have reached 10001 boxes all in all. These “delightful boxes” (to be appended with United Action Sticker as produced uniformly by UEM) will be apportioned by each Church to its respective congregations, families, offices and centers. These boxes will be dropped or filled with whatever amount of money either on a daily or weekly basis. Later, on UEM Sunday (first Sunday of June) these boxes will be reported by the congregations to the Church Headquarters, which will account and remit the whole collections to UEM (Medan Office). C. Offerings/Collections during AsRA, ARB Meetings & other UEM Programs/Activities The ARB has decided on these offerings as intended for UEM Foundation. As the target contribution for the UEM Foundation is already achieved, the subsequent offerings/collections beginning this 2013 will be earmarked as contribution to the United Action Campaign. "Our breaking news for now are: A) The first-ever "Walk a Mile" activity in the Batakland on 6th February 2014 at HKBP-Sigumpar in Samosir, with over 1.000 people expected to take part, including UEM personalities from Germany and Church Leaders in North Sumatra. B) The "UEM Goes to Campus" in Laguboti and Balige schools on 15th February and the STTSundermann on Nias island on 21st February. C) The International Youth Programme in Africa on March 3rd, 2014. Welcoming Ceremony at the Gate or Entrance + The HKBP Local Committee prepares Batak songs, dances and Ulos as a traditional form of receiving Guests (UEM and Church Leaders)

Tree Planting around the Church Grounds + As a symbolic life-giving act, each Church Leader (Ephorus/Bishop) in North Sumatra plants a seedling as his Church‟s solemn pledge to continue the mission work of DR. LI Nommensen, who pioneered in “sowing the seeds of faith” in the Batakland.

HKBP-Sigumpar Church -

Act of offering flowers + Each Church Leader and other participants shall offer flowers at the tomb as an act of remembering DR. Nommensen on the occasion of his birthday. The HKBP Local Committee prepares the flowers.

B. UEM GOES TO CAMPUS in Laguboti, Balige and Nias After the success of program “UEM GOES TO CAMPUS” in 2013, United Evangelical Mission is going to hold UEM GOES TO CAMPUS focussing on different themes. Early this 2014, UEM will hold Public lecture “UEM Goes To Campus” to the Biblevrouw School of HKBP in Laguboti on 15 February 2014, and to the Deaconess School of HKBP in Balige. With the theme “Child Poverty and Trafficking”, UEM will be together with Mrs. Widhiyanti, a jurist Consultant, to lead the students and faculty to familiarize themselves with the UEM program and with the issues related to Child Poverty and Trafficking from a theological perspective. Furthermore, on February 22 UEM will also visit STT-Sundermann BNKP in Nias Island. Mr.Saurlin Siagian, a Consultant of Climate Justice, will bring the students to know deeper about Climate Justice and encourage the youth to take action for caring the planet earth.

C. The International Youth Programme: “The Great Lakes Region in the Eyes of Their Children” UEM will hold an International Youth Programme, “The great lakes region in the eyes of their children.” The program will be conducted on March 3, 2014 in Rwanda and Eastern Congo. This venue now has been chosen due to our intention to set a special sign of solidarity with the people in this conflict region. The UEM youth shall get to be aware of the political and general situation there, but also to reflect on their own backgrounds. The project will not only create a platform for inter-cultural learning but also motivate the youth raise their own voices and get involved in the fights against child poverty. The international youth project will bring together 20 young international participants, among them 4 young adults from Asia, are expected to joint this project. Goals of the project:  to raise interest in and spread knowledge of the political situation in the Great Lakes Region;  to strengthen the international UEM youth community;  to motivate young people to get more involved with UEM and human rights issues;  to publish, that UEM youth live visible in solidarity in difficult circumstances;  to exchange about the theme of the General Assembly: “Child poverty and trafficking”;  to create awareness about the situation of child poverty in the Great Lake Region in a creative way with new media;
