CCI has seen some of their best success come out of this and now they are stronger because of it! As employers closed their doors, employee lay- offs began to fill the CCI employment counsellor’s days. Each client needed assistance in understanding the federal funding support programs, how to apply, if to apply and where to apply. As time went on the programs and service models were adapted to the communication capabilities of the clientele, 87% of clients had access to a phone and/ or internet. This meant that that clients would be able to still access CCI programming but from their homes. During the first month of remote delivery CCI had seen a significant increase in new clients due to a new provincial government program in Brandon called “Jobs on 9th,” 27 new people entered the job market. What came next, no one was expecting. Local Westman employers began to phone looking for staff to start ASAP, not one or two jobs but now almost 25! Clients were being hired for jobs all over Westman. Calls from local employers who knew that CCI has access to 200 plus individuals at any given time who were ready to work. Many clients started work the next day at local grocery stores, sanitation companies, meat packing and others and 95% of these people are still working today and have been hired on as permanent employees. None of this could be been predicted, but what is now clear is that it takes an entire community to move through a pandemic. Not one person, organization, business etc. it truly takes everyone!
