My first career path was spent teaching high school English, environmental and cultural geography for eight years. My husband and I looked at the opportunity to run a business together that would enable us to work and vacation together and that would benefit our children to be growing up in a healthy environment similar to our farm upbringing while following a different path from our parents. In August of 1988, we opened our natural food store in Brandon, just days after the birth of our daughter. I was teaching every day by helping people achieve better health. My strength lies in my ability to study all areas of natural health topics, and in communicating effectively to those seeking help in making changes. It has been so extremely rewarding over the last 32 years to have people come back and tell me that they have made positive changes in their lifestyle based on me pointing them in the direction of vibrant health. Being in business for me is about – In an independent small business, I love being able to adapt quickly to change in order to help other people find the natural foods, supplements, and personal care that they require in their search for better health for themselves and for the environment.

How are you going to leave your mark on

the world – I hope people will say, “Sylvia helped me live a better life by giving me the confidence to take charge of my own health. It started with her statement, “If YOU don’t look after your health, it WILL go away! It made me realize that I need to listen to my body and learn to help myself achieve better health.”

Tell us what gets you out of bed and

motivated each day – Helping others learn how to make changes for a healthier life. You see a pattern here?!

What do you love most about work and

life here in Westman – Westman has a population base still strongly tied to the family farm, and I have always supported local farm-based businesses by giving them a start by selling their farm products in our store. In the early 1990’s, we were the first to sell Linda Pizzey’s Flax Bread and in 2007, she won the Canadian Agi-Marketer of the year, as well as many other awards for the production and promotion of Manitoba grown flax. We are happy to have raised our family in a community with great family values and with great word of mouth that has helped to establish two farm kids NATURAL FOODS as a leader in healthy living.
