CHRISTMAS LIGHTS @ LATE NIGHT SHOPPING A suggestion has been made that we try to encourage businesses and households in the centre of the village to festively decorate their window(s) in a bid to encourage more people to come to Minster for our Annual Late Night Shopping event. We are looking at possibly offering a prize for the best window as voted on by members of the public attending on the evening. This is in the early planning stage at present and we’d love to hear your views and more especially, if you live or run a business in the area, that you’d be willing to participate. Look for more details next month but in the meantime if you wish to contact us please either speak to Brenda at Jemima’s or email the Editor.

MOBILITY SCOOTERS & WHEELCHAIRS VILLAGE FREE LOAN SCHEME WE NEED YOUR HELP!!! Many of you will be aware that Minster Matters runs a free short term loan scheme for Mobility Scooters and Wheelchairs in the village (we have 3 of each) - however up until now we have been able to house these at the Library but we were recently asked to remove them from the building. So now we are desperately looking for a small amount of undercover storage space to enable us to continue to operate this service. Failure to find a new home, very soon, may mean we will have to close down the facility and rehome the equipment. Can you help? Please contact the Editor on 07864 345 019 or email E-mail : Find us on Google Hangouts MM Mobile: 07864 345 019

MINSTER MATTERS NEEDS YOU!! Well our plea did encourage one resident to step forward to help. However Minster Matters is still looking for at least one more keen ‘unpaid’ volunteer to join our team with a view to becoming Ray a page editor/layout designer. Training will obviously be given and relevant software will be supplied. Any prospective volunteer will need to have regular access to a Windows computer (apologies but our DTP program won’t run Diane on a MAC, although that may change later this year). You must also be willing to give up a weekend every other month . You should be NORTHROP SERVICES able to work as part of a team, be IT literate and have an ’eye’ for KITCHEN & BATHROOM FITTING layout and design. Diane Tiling, Plastering The job will entail designing new advertisements from & General Maintenance customer’s specs, laying out magazine pages ready for printing, HOME DECORATING making best use of available space, helping to keep our websites updated and assisting with distribution. Interior & Exterior Diana The position would best suit a retired/semi-retired person, a Local, Reliable & Experienced stay at home parent or in fact anyone who feels they have the time Contact Paul or Tracy to commit to keep this magazine ‘alive and kicking’. 01843 823 646 We also still have a position available for someone who can Kevin commit to one evening a month (or maybe every other month) for Flowers by Vanessa Bouquets, Baskets,Table decorations, our audio recording at the Holiday Inn. Someone who knows the Weddings or Funerals Audacity program would be good, but we are willing to give training if Created with the “Personal Touch” necessary. You will be required to ensure the monthly script is recorded For designs with a difference successfully to our laptop and transferred to memory stick for delivery to our Vanessa Fairbrass audio editor. (C&G qualified florist) If you feel you would like to ‘get involved’ in either of these positions then Rose Cottage, Manor Road, please speak to a member of the MM team or contact the editor - details can St. Nicholas at Wade CT7 0NY 01843 847 012 07934 420 837 be found on page 2 of this issue. We look forward to meeting you!! I can deliver within Thanet & Canterbury

EDITORIAL Firstly thank you to Kathryn for coming forward and offering to help produce this magazine, I really thought my plea would fall on deaf ears. Just got to get you trained up now!! We hope you liked the Show pictures last month - we had so many to choose from eventually that we thought we’d give you another 5 pages again this month - soon, they will all be available to view on the Show website at, there are loads we’ve been unable to print. Well as usual I've all too soon run out of space so it just leaves me enough room to ask my usual question - where’s Zac? Gel Polish on fingers and toes only £28 Book now to avoid disappointment

MISSING USB MEMORY STICK On the day of Minster Show I lent someone a brand new USB memory stick to put some files (possibly pictures) on it for me (I think) However I cannot for the life of me remember who it was I gave it to. It has a turquoise blue/green body with a transparent blue connection cover and a short black strap. It is a 16GB Toshiba stick. I’d love to get it back, as I say it was brand new and I’m sure I wouldn’t have lent it out if I wasn’t expecting it to be returned. SO, do you have it? If you do then can you please let me know so as I can stop fretting and maybe come and collect it. Thanks, Ray (Editor)

ZAC’S MUSINGS The old boy has been a lot less stressed this month knowing he has a volunteer joining the team to help him out, mind you he’d be even better to live with if he could find another one or two to assist as well, fingers crossed. I’ve kept him up a few nights recently when I’ve been off colour and not sleeping too well, but we cope, it’s really a case of who gets the biggest bit of the settee, quite amazing how much space a ‘little’ dog can take up!! We’re expecting the Welsh contingent here again for a week before they’re back to school, let’s hope the weather is good and we can all get out in the Rec to burn off some energy.

'Twas the sweet day of rest on the first day of May, To the Church of St. Mary's I wended my way: I breathed as I passed up the sacred aisle "As sound as the bells keep my heart from guile."

The Curlew, so fearful, so timid, so shy, Comes nearer the beach with his whistling cry, By the hand of the sportsman it's sure not to fall; The bells of St. Mary's sound safety to all.

The Bingo evening which we held in the Marquee after the Minster Show, was not too well attended, but enjoyed by those who did. So, not to be defeated it has been decided that we will attempt another evening, maybe during the winter months and advertise a little more extensively. Congratulations go to Judy Kennett who walked away with over £100 in cash prizes!! Our next Quiz is looming (Saturday 2 September) and we still have a few tables left to fill. Please call Carol on 01843 447 706 to book yourselves in. The quiz starts at 8pm sharp and cost is £5 per person including a buffet. Always a fun evening at the RBL. (See our poster on page**) Sunday 3 September is our Treasure Hunt which costs just £5 per couple with children up to 12 free. Please meet up at the High St Car Park next to the Bell Inn at 2pm for a walk and car hunt. Bring a picnic to enjoy when the final clue is solved and the winners are being decided. Full details from Ann and Jamie Thomson on 01843 822 156. (See poster on page**) There are still some spaces at our Race Night on Saturday 21 October at the RBL. Book yourselves in and enjoy a 3 course meal with us for just £15. Races should be streamed to the TV, so everyone ought to get a good view. A Coach Trip to the Brighton Centre is being organized for Saturday 13 January 2018 to see “Holiday on Ice”. Your coach fare and ticket for the show will be a very reasonable £43 per person in total. For further details see our poster on page **. We hope there will be sufficient interest to fill the coach by the end of September, but if not, the trip will not go ahead. We hope to see you at the Quiz, which has attendees of 100 so far!

September 2017 Kate’s Puddings – what’s cooking? This month I bring you a fabulous recipe from Lorraine Pascale. It’s simple, easy and delicious. What more can I say?

Minster Matters

Pear, Almond and Amaretto Tart Enriched Pastry: 4oz/100g butter 8oz/225g plain flour pinch salt 1 egg, beaten Tart: 4oz/100g softened butter 4oz/100g caster sugar 4oz/100g ground almonds 3tbsp plain flour 1 egg 1tbsp amaretto liqueur (or 2tsp almond essence and 1dsp milk) 4 ripe pears Mascarpone and ginger Cream: 1 tub (8oz/250g) mascarpone cheese 1 ball stem ginger (comes in syrup), chopped finely ½ vanilla pod or few drops extract 2oz/50g icing sugar Handful of fresh mint, chopped finely Preheat the oven to 180deg C. Make the pastry (in a food processor, add the butter to the flour and salt, process until it looks like crumbs, add the egg and cold water as needed to make a smooth dough). For best results, put the pastry in a ball into the fridge for 20 minutes, then roll out into a 9” loose bottomed flan tin (or oblong tin) and prick the base lightly. You can refrigerate it again for another 20 minutes. Whisk the butter and sugar together until it is well creamed, then beat in the almonds and flour before adding the egg and essence. Continue to whisk together until it is well combined. Now spread the filling evenly in the tart case. Peel the pears and take out the core. Arrange them nose to tail, or in a circle (whatever fits, really!) on the filling. Bake for 35 minutes or so until the filling has all puffed up – watch carefully near the end! Mix the ingredients for the mascarpone cream. Dust the tart with icing sugar and serve with a few chopped mint leaves and the Mascarpone cream. For more decadent recipes, go to Upcoming Events

MINSTER BOWLS CLUB We are nearing the end of the Outdoor season with only our Finals Weekend at home on the 16/17 September left to play. Two of our bowlers had a very successful time at the Ramsgate Open Tournament, Terry Harrison won the Men's Singles and also the Mixed Doubles which he played with Christy, his wife. Christy also won the Ladies Doubles playing alongside Christine Penn of Cliftonville and she came third in the Ladies Singles. Congratulations to them both. We had a very enjoyable Quiz Night in August thanks to Alan Pummell the Organizer and Roger Pluckrose the Quizmaster. Two trips are planned for the Autumn, firstly St. Omer on Wednesday 4 October which will include a three-course restaurant meal, with wine, for a very reasonable £59 all in, whilst on Tuesday 28 November we’re off to the Bruges Christmas Market, tickets for this are just £35. Minster residents are invited to apply for tickets to these outings on a first come first served basis. The Pre-Season Short-Mat Meeting will be held on Friday 8 September at 7.00p.m. in the Clubhouse when entries for the competitions will be accepted and fees collected from those members who have not already paid. Remember this is a village club, anyone who would like to try the game can do so free of charge by e-mailing or telephone 845 638. Brian Morphew, Hon. Secretary

Minster Parish Council Meeting Summary of Key Points 4th July, 2017 • • The Chairman reported that the Riveroak

Consultation event at the Village Hall on 27 June had been very well attended; 163 people signed the attendance sheet, some 20 others were refused entry on a health and safety basis as the hall had reached capacity. It was noted that the majority of those present were in favour of the retention of the airport. The meeting then discussed the policy of Minster Parish Council. A vote was taken and it was agreed that the Parish Council policy would be to support the retention of Manston Airport. The Chairman agreed to complete the consultation document accordingly. • A meeting with the TDC Chief Executive was confirmed for 10 July to discuss parking charges in Minster. The meeting did take place and the matter is not yet resolved. The negotiation has become more complex as it encompasses payments from TDC to the parish for work carried out on their behalf. Further discussion took place on 17 August and another meeting was agreed for September. The Chairman undertook to keep everyone informed of developments. • The members discussed the application made by McDonald’s restaurant to extend their licence; the company wish to remove the condition of ‘drive thru only’ between 11pm and 5am. The council agreed to strongly object on the grounds that this would increase the incidence of anti-social behaviour. Residents were encouraged to submit their objections to the Licensing Officer. At that time confirmation had been received that the Police were objecting to this extension of the licence. Unfortunately, when the licensing hearing took place on 8 August the police withdrew their objections at the last minute. Despite 26 letters of objection and personal representations from Cllrs. Grove and Crow-Brown, two residents and the Chairman of Minster Parish Council, the Licensing committee decided to grant the application. The Parish Council have written to the Police to express their disappointment for their seeming

lack of support for local residents following many incidents of anti-social behaviour linked to the premises; we await a reply. The meeting noted a report of a go kart being used on the play area and open space near the multi-use games area in the early hours of the morning. It was considered that signage was not necessary at this stage after just one incident but that the situation would be monitored. The meeting agreed to order plaques to be presented as a civic award to locations that made positive contributions to the local environment in the Parish. Thanks to Dee Tompkins and her daughter for suggesting this scheme. Cllr. Quittenden reported that the Twinning Assn. had been involved in a number of successful events recently and were looking forward to the Minster Show when, amongst other things, they would be running a bingo event in the evening in the marquee. Cllr. Goodman reported that the Vicar had expressed his thanks to all those who had supported the open gardens events, which raised £5,400 for the church. Question from the public were as follows: A microphone would assist in the council meetings. Council were unsure about the cost of this. Complaint about the eyesore at Quirky’s; it was agreed that a letter would be sent to the owner of the forecourt. The speed of cars along the pavement in Rose Gardens; it was agreed to raise this matter with KCC at a forthcoming meeting. A resident of Smuggler’s Leap outlined errors in the Riveroak document and expressed concerns over the resale value of her property linked to noise pollution. The resident was advised to ensure that she completed the consultation document and was also reassured by others present that homes had been at that site since 1921 while the airport had been fully operational. A resident informed the meeting that, with reference to planned developments in the parish, an informal traffic census would be carried out on 18 July and volunteers would be welcome.

KENT SCOUTS TRIP TO ANTARCTICA 2021 will be the 100th Anniversary of Ernest Shackleton’s Final Quest Expedition to Antarctica for which he had invited 2 scouts to join him. Kent Scouts hope to recreate this experience for 30 scouts and 10 adult leaders. However to do so they need financial sponsorship and during 2017/18 they must raise more than £300,000. Each selected scout will have to raise £5000, promote scouting’s strong heritage links with the 1921 Shackleton expedition, undertake an Antarctic Research Project and learn to crew a 100 year old sailing vessel through Antarctic waters. Selection will only take place if Kent Scouts achieve their initial fundraising goals over the next year.
