Minster and Monkton Horticultural Society As there has been no meeting of the Society since June, this is a reminder that our September meeting is on Wednesday 16 September. This meeting will be our Autumn Show, so members please have your vegetables, flowers and cookery items ready for entry. Staging will be from 6.30pm with judging at 7.30pm or thereabouts. Show schedules were distributed previously but some are still available from Don Wilks at 9 High Street. The Show is open to anyone and entry forms need to be handed in to Joan Card at 71A High Street by Monday 14 September. This event will round off a very interesting year with talks on various subjects and some lovely outings. The Society’s AGM will be held on Wednesday 21 October at 7.30pm. We should welcome new ideas to improve the Society, names of any speakers that might be of interest and anyone who would like to join us on the Committee. The AGM business will be followed by a talk from Secretary Don Wilks on ‘Fungi, Dragons and Flies’. We also have a Coffee Morning in the Old Schools, on Saturday 17 October from 9.30 until 11.30am, when there will be plants, cookery items and other things for sale as well as refreshments and a chance to chat. We also hope to have a Christmas Floral Art Demonstration in November and a Christmas Party in December (Tickets available from October). We are currently finalising next year’s programme and have decided that there will be no meetings in January and February but there will now be one in July. The subscription for the year will be £5.00, including a free cup of tea or coffee at meetings. We always welcome new members and if you would like a taster we charge £1 for visitors. We are hoping to reinstate Saturdays for both our Spring and Autumn Shows. Speakers we have booked so far will be talking on ‘Growing Sweet Peas’, ‘Bearded Iris’, ‘Growing Vegetables for Showing’ and ‘Care of Orchids’. We will also run the ‘Grow a Potato in a Bucket’ Competition again, with both the bucket and the potato supplied by the Society. This year’s clear winner was Cynthia Neville with a massive 3.2 kilos. Try your luck next year! Joan Card – Chairman Don Wilks - Secretary

OLD SCHOOLS BOOKINGS Jacque Sings has worked tirelessly to ensure that the Old Schools has run smoothly, from her perfectly placed home by the Church. She has found solutions to each new query or problem, and has been constantly seen dashing backwards and forwards to lock, unlock or deal with deliveries. She is soon to move - not far- but she won't be quite so conveniently placed! Everyone at St. Mary's Church is very grateful for her strenuous efforts; so THANK YOU JACQUE! You've done an amazing job, and we wish you much happiness in your new home. From Friday 21 August could all enquiries about the Old Schools please be directed to: Pat Hogben on 822 082 or Email: pmhogben@hotmail.co.uk Thank you.
