EDITORIAL I’m sure the months are getting shorter it only seems a few weeks ago we were recovering from Christmas and now I’m looking at events in October and November, where does the time go?? Please note we now have a new phone number, not that there is anything Diana wrong with my old one but we felt it was time MM had its own number so as if anything were to happen to me, or God forbid I decide one day to just give this all up, then there is no panic by whoever takes over the reins to get numbers changed in the magazine or on the web as they will have the new number on handover of the job. So please make a note of it in your phone books/diaries as Kevin this is the number I intend doing all of my MM work on from here on in. A slimmer issue than normal as it appears no-one did a great deal in August and there’s not too much going on in September - we started off this month cutting it down to 32 pages then as time went by it was decided we would reduce it to 28 pages as there was nothing coming in to fill it. Let’s hope it picks up again in the build up to the ‘Festive Season’. Pictures on our front cover this month show some of the VJ Day 70th Anniversary Celebrations at the Royal British Legion Club Open Day on Sunday 23 August. Well that’s about it, just room to ask my usual question -”Where’s Zac?”

Minster and Monkton Horticultural Society As there has been no meeting of the Society since June, this is a reminder that our September meeting is on Wednesday 16 September. This meeting will be our Autumn Show, so members please have your vegetables, flowers and cookery items ready for entry. Staging will be from 6.30pm with judging at 7.30pm or thereabouts. Show schedules were distributed previously but some are still available from Don Wilks at 9 High Street. The Show is open to anyone and entry forms need to be handed in to Joan Card at 71A High Street by Monday 14 September. This event will round off a very interesting year with talks on various subjects and some lovely outings. The Society’s AGM will be held on Wednesday 21 October at 7.30pm. We should welcome new ideas to improve the Society, names of any speakers that might be of interest and anyone who would like to join us on the Committee. The AGM business will be followed by a talk from Secretary Don Wilks on ‘Fungi, Dragons and Flies’. We also have a Coffee Morning in the Old Schools, on Saturday 17 October from 9.30 until 11.30am, when there will be plants, cookery items and other things for sale as well as refreshments and a chance to chat. We also hope to have a Christmas Floral Art Demonstration in November and a Christmas Party in December (Tickets available from October). We are currently finalising next year’s programme and have decided that there will be no meetings in January and February but there will now be one in July. The subscription for the year will be £5.00, including a free cup of tea or coffee at meetings. We always welcome new members and if you would like a taster we charge £1 for visitors. We are hoping to reinstate Saturdays for both our Spring and Autumn Shows. Speakers we have booked so far will be talking on ‘Growing Sweet Peas’, ‘Bearded Iris’, ‘Growing Vegetables for Showing’ and ‘Care of Orchids’. We will also run the ‘Grow a Potato in a Bucket’ Competition again, with both the bucket and the potato supplied by the Society. This year’s clear winner was Cynthia Neville with a massive 3.2 kilos. Try your luck next year! Joan Card – Chairman Don Wilks - Secretary

A Big Thank You Can I say a very big thank you to all the children and parents who gave me such wonderful cards and presents upon my recent retirement from school. I was totally overwhelmed by all of your kind comments and good wishes. I just consider myself so very lucky to have had the opportunity of working with so many amazing children and parents over the years, not forgetting so many work colleagues. It was a hard decision to make as I will miss seeing the children each day, but I feel the right one. Thank you all for making my job so enjoyable.

The courses are broken down into four levels (Available to anyone living in Kent) as detailed below – Starting to Ride - Suitable for anyone wanting to start riding a bicycle, this course will give you the skills and courage to get out there. It includes getting on and off the bike, balancing and making the bike go where you want. Return to Cycling - It's true you never forget how to ride a bicycle but a practical, off road session to get you back up to speed will help give you the confidence to start riding again regularly. It includes manoeuvring, using the gears, riding confidently and being able to stop safely. This session also includes some basic safety checks and is suitable for leisure cyclists as well as those wanting to cycle on the road. Confidence Booster - Beginning to cycle for work or pleasure but unsure how to share the road safely with other vehicles and pedestrians? This short course will include important manoeuvres and key safety messages to increase your knowledge and give you the skills to cycle alongside other road users. Includes overtaking parked cars, using junctions, signalling and understanding where to ride on the road. Advanced Cycling - For cyclists already commuting to work or cycling regularly on the road, this intensive course tackles cycling on busy roads and through complex junctions including roundabouts and multilane systems. Gain confidence cycling during rush hour, improve your road position and filtering skills. Cycle with an instructor and get practical advice and cycling experience that will assure your position as a cyclist. The courses have been developed using the national standards for cycle instruction and are delivered by qualified instructors, lasting for 2 hours. As you can see from the picture, it starts with a well-known local celebrity, playing the main part, falling from an electricity pylon into an eight-footdeep pile of manure. This funny, enjoyable, and very different play will run from Wednesday 23 to Saturday 26 September, which will soon be with us, so make a date in your diary not to miss this one! The Box Office is now open on 07501 894 381. Pantomime Auditions have already taken place for our pantomime this year, which will be Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and will run from Wednesday 2 to Saturday 5 December. However, if you would like to join in at Minster Playhouse, we welcome keen new people whether to act or on the technical side, so why not join us? If you are interested, please contact the Playhouse: info@minsterplayhouse.co.uk www.minsterplayhouse.co.uk

THE GIANTS ARE COMING Our big event A DAY OF GIANTS is creeping even nearer. A year of preparations is coming to an end. Look at the picture and see how some of the giants are sneaking into the village. What adorable eyes he has!! This one is only from Hawkinge, having crept in early, but Liverpool, Essex, Herne Bay, and Ashford have theirs ready to come here too, as well as at least 6 from France joining Mildred and Princess Fleur. Canterbury and Margate are here already. Belle from Canterbury showed us how amazing she was when she made an appearance at the Minster Show. Were you impressed? There will be a small group of young volunteers from Minster School, majorettes, bands and Morris Dancers joining the parade too, so be prepared on 6 September to line the streets of the village to see these spectacular giants working their way from the Holiday Inn at midday, down Fairfield Road, Greenhill Gardens, Freeman’s Road, out onto the Monkton Road, down the High Street, past the church to the main entrance of the Abbey gates. It is here that each giant will ‘dance’ before being awarded their medallions and attendance certificates. They will then proceed to Parkminster, and form an orderly line in front of the barn for all to view. Awesome! There will be light refreshments, entertainment, a free bouncy castle and a variety of stalls in this area during the afternoon. The prizes for the grand raffle will be on show. Raffle tickets can be purchased in advance from Attwells newsagent and from the Hair of the Dog. THIS IS AN EVENT NOT TO BE MISSED!!

The cost is £5 per person and this includes a wonderful buffet. Questions start at 8pm. A raffle will be held too. To book a table in advance, please contact Carol on 07745 We are now an 683 466. This makes it easier for our caterers and ensures there will be Orthopaedic Referral Centre more than enough for everyone. Quality Service FINALLY at affordable rates REMEMBER, REMEMBER, 6 SEPTEMBER
