EDITORIAL ‘I’VE HAD IT OFF!!’ (Founder members of the MOGs dared me to write that !!) My plaster that is! Although my wrist is still quite swollen I’ve now lost the cast and slowly things are returning to normal, whatever normal is. I can say, that even though I’m not yet back to 100%, I am at least able to sleep now without the aid of painkillers, what a blessing. Enough about me, let’s talk about something more interesting. Yes I know, anything is more interesting than me but sometimes you have to allow me to be that little bit selfish and speak about myself, after all I have to fill this column every month and it gets harder every time. I’m quite sad to see this years Year 6 leavers on the front page, some of them have been the best members of Journalist Club that I’ve had the privilege of teaching in the 6 or 7 years I’ve been doing it. They’ve all been great but some have made a big impression on me over the 3 years they’ve been coming to the club and I’ll find it strange not seeing them every week. I don’t intend mentioning any names as I’m sure they’ll all know who I’m talking about and it would be unfair if I forgot anybody and believe me I’m quite capable of that. I will however just say to one former member, “Mr Potter, look after those teeth !!”. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Minster Parish Council, but more especially Danny Day and Kyla, for getting me involved in helping, albeit in a small way, with the organisation of the De Selys Longchamps Commemoration Service. I found it frustrating at times but I just know I’d do it again at the drop of a hat, not least because the ‘Belgian beer and cakes’ were great but also because I really enjoyed being involved and taking on some of the more mundane responsibilities. So thank you for asking me, it has been a privilege. Speaking of the Commemoration Service, you will find we have included 5, yes 5, full colour pages of pictures from ‘Snappy’s camera’, which we hope will show those who were unable to attend just what they missed. (To view all 129 of ‘Snappy’s photos go to Although the weather wasn’t great and some people did have to get the brollies out for a few minutes, everyone I spoke to at the British Legion afterwards had nothing but praise for both the Service and the people who had made it possible. The Service even got a good mention on the early evening BBC Southeast news, thanks to their reporter/cameraperson Alex Beard, so thank you Alex and the BBC. We also had reporters and photographers from most of the local papers so watch the news-stands for further reports on the day. (Do you have any pictures of the Commemoration Service we 61, High St could use to add to the library on our website - if so please get in Minster contact with us - his family would love to see them) Again space has beaten me and I had so much more I wanted Tel: to say (like not!). I just wonder what my hound’s got to say this month - to find out see Zac’s Musings - me thinks he’s getting too big for his boots !!

SURGERY TRAINING DAYS The Surgery will be closed from Midday onwards, on the following days: Wednesday 11th September and Wednesday 9th October. Should you need to see a Doctor during these times, please call “Doctors on Call” via the normal surgery number - 821333. You can also access the new “NHS 111 Service”, where you can get confidential help and advice for you and your family. This is for less urgent cases, that are not life threatening, rather than calling “999”. Further information can be found on their web site at: AN INTERESTING FACT - DID YOU KNOW? As GP’s are now in control of their own budgets Every time a patient visits A&E, their GP gets charged for that visit. Every time a GP refers a patient to see a Consultant, the GP is charged for that referral. PLEASE! PLEASE! STOP BEING A TIME WASTER ! Last month 80 patients failed to attend for their Doctor’s appointment, that’s an INCREASE on the previous month. Last month 37 patients failed to attend for their Nurse’s appointment, and that’s a slight DECREASE thank you, but it’s still 117 MISSED APPOINTMENTS, 117 WASTED APPOINTMENTS AND 117 OTHER PATIENTS THAT COULD HAVE BEEN SEEN ! One has to ask, why make an appointment and not bother to turn up? In comparison to other NHS services supplied by the surgery, a record of such appointments is now being compiled, and any action deemed necessary to help reduce this problem will be considered! SO PLEASE STOP WASTING TIME AND MONEY - DON’T NEED IT CANCEL IT ! ANNUAL CHRISTMAS BAZAAR SATURDAY 16th NOVEMBER Table bookings are being taken now - and several have already been reserved - so get in quick! PATIENT GROUP MEETING If you have any issues you would like to raise at our next meeting or require further information on any of the above, then please contact : Ken Self on 821200 or Jeanne Lawrence on 821049

Alan Tucker 17.11.35 - 30.06.13 It is with great sadness that Shirley Tucker and her daughter Karon Wilson announce the death of a very brave and beloved husband, father and grandfather. Alan passed away peacefully on the 30th June 2013 after a long illness courageously and cheerfully borne. As was his wish during his last few days he was surrounded by his family at home. Alan and Shirley moved to Monkton 9 years ago from Derby to be close to Karon, Peter and their family and they settled happily into village life and made many new friends. Alan's family was so important to him and he was especially proud of his grandchildren Daniel and Laura. To them he was granddad-their hero, he instilled in them a hardworking attitude and a zest 1L/ for life (and wherever possible a complete disregard for Health and Safety MPG CARPET CLEANING at all times!). The bouncy castle was, as usual, very popular with the little folk and new friends were made. Christine Lynch won the lottery and kindly donated her prize to the YOUR LOCAL BUILDER Twinning Association. The bowling game was again very popular and won by Brickwork Specialist, Roofing the English this year. Young Thomas Whelan, aged 11, represented us well, Plastering, Extensions he is seen in the photo on page 19 being presented with his cash by last 85 Tothill Street, Minster year’s French winner. In the other photograph on the same page you can see t: 823 974 m: 07989 578 169 that the French visitors enjoyed the camaraderie. Due to holidays, we were a little sparse on staff for the event but would like to thank Alex and Dale’s family members for coming on board. They enjoyed it as much as anyone else – which was a great deal. Again a small profit was made and a lot of networking done. We now have two local offers for the supply of a generator for the bouncy castle, which is kindly donated by Parkland Estates. We are planning our own quiz, at The Royal British Legion Club, on 5th October so please support us. Christine will be Question Master yet again so that should encourage previous attendees. Please do contact us if you have any interest in joining the committee or helping in any way, and if you want the chance to speak more French.

MINSTER & MONKTON ROYAL BRITISH LEGION CLUB DISPLAY CABINETS A recent announcement by Club Chairman Brian Stevenson saw three new display cabinets officially ‘launched’ at the club, thanks in the main to Ron Baker who designed them and the ‘Ward Room’ who financed them. It had been a long and arduous task to get to this stage but having overcome many obstacles and emails to the Chairman’s wife a plaque was duly unveiled to commemorate the occasion. Glasses were raised to the ‘Display Cabinets’

URGENT! Recipes Needed for Minster Village Cookbook!

We would like to produce a cookbook with recipes and accompanying photographs from the villagers of Minster. We are looking for all your favourite recipes. These may have been passed down through the generations or just found in the latest magazines. Maybe you have tried something from a TV chef or invented your own delicious dish. If you have anything you would like to share we would be glad to hear from you. The idea is that once all recipes have been gathered we would choose a selection to enter in the book and those chosen would be asked to prepare their recipe for a ‘taster evening’ on late night shopping night at the Old Schools when we would hope to launch the book. We think this would be a fun way for all to raise funds for much needed repairs to our beautiful Parish church. If you think you would like to be included and have your name in a published book please send a copy of your recipe, with your name and contact details, along with a photograph if you have one of your dish to Or drop it in at the old schools in the box marked Village Recipes. CLOSING DATE: 31 AUGUST

The Big Collection 2013

Thank you to everyone who donated to the Big Collection in 2012 Please support our work to provide vital social and community services, through the Big Collection. Every day The Salvation Army supports thousands of people in desperate need, including people who are homeless, families facing hardship, victims of violence and abuse, and lonely older people. By giving to the Big Collection you can help us to raise the funds we need to carry on our work. Our collectors – Salvation Army members, friends and volunteers – are going door-to-door in September. Please be as generous as you can as 100% of all donations to the Big Collection will directly support The Salvation Army’s work to help people in need. Your donation will be spent entirely on our work with vulnerable people across the UK. Close to a century and a half of caring for people in need, The Salvation Army today is helping more people than ever before. In the current difficult economic circumstances, we are already seeing large increases in the number o f people needing the basic necessities of life - food, shelter, comfort and warmth. We don't judge or condemn, we are here to help people. If you can help in our Big Collection this year by collecting your street or road, or would like to be part of a Collection group please contact Captains Bryn & Lyn Hargreaves on 08143 825178 or 822308

Editor for this month was Jim Dolman

On Tuesday afternoon Year 6 attended their leavers service at the church. It was a wonderful ceremony where the children shared their memories from KS1 and KS2 and sang their favourite hymn “Be Bold, Be Strong”.

TIME TO SAY GOODBYE It is always sad to say goodbye to our Year 6 children but we know they are ready to leave and move onto their next stage of learning.

Well done to all Year 6 who produced a very successful performance. Everybody involved did a brilliant job and the performance was greatly enjoyed by the rest of the school, family and friends. LEAVERS vs STAYERS

Mrs Stone then presented the awards for 2013 starting with the Literacy Award to Tommy Lamb. Other awards presented were; Maths: Thomas Hulks; Drama: Arianne Daw; Sports: Mitchell Pask; Community: Alice Cox; Science: Hayley Palmer and Music: Luke Meads. The Booker Award, this year, was presented to Theodore Smith for his overall achievement and contribution to school life. It was an emotional end to the service with the children singing “The Greatest Day” by Take That. PARTY TIME! During the last week Year 6 had the opportunity to enjoy some fun

As in previous years, the Year 6 leavers, challenged the Year 5 stayers, to some friendly sports matches including netball, football and rugby. Both year groups had success with the results as follows: LEAVERS STAYERS Netball 8 2 activities including a BBQ in Football 0 2 the sun, a fabulous roller Rugby 5 3 disco and to end their last day in style, a cooling water party, in which the adults definitely came off worse!!

Good luck to you all in your new schools, we wish you every success.

Zac’s Musings

How inconsiderate can you be? Since I last wrote he, who should be obeyed (if I’m in the mood!!), had to take a bus trip home from Canterbury on the No11. En-route a window got broken but he didn’t tell the driver until he got off - WHY? - so as he didn’t have to wait for a replacement bus to pick them up - NO get home first and then leave the rest of the passengers stranded, very inconsiderate !!
