MINSTER MATTERS 2 CALLS FOR HELP Minster Matters are still looking for one or maybe two active retired/non-working people who drive and have a car that could possibly give up a few hours once a month or maybe every other month on a Friday and Saturday to help distribute the magazine.

This would require you being on-hand to come to the library on the Friday when the magazine is delivered back from the printers, splitting and boxing them into the various ‘rounds’ and delivering them to our willing band of volunteers who then deliver NORTHROP SERVICES them door to door. Furthermore, there are also a number of both KITCHEN & BATHROOM FITTING bulk and individual deliveries we make outside of the immediate Tiling, Plastering village but still within Minster Parish and this is what we normally & General Maintenance do on the Saturday morning.

HOME DECORATING Our second request is for someone (or two) to help us with Interior & Exterior our audio recording once a month, or again maybe every other Local, Reliable & Experienced month, at The Holiday Inn on a Tuesday evening. We just need Contact Paul or Tracy you to watch that the recording is happening successfully on our 01843 823 646 laptop, noting, by hand, any mistakes made by our volunteer readers on the supplied script, uploading the finished file to a memory stick, then delivering both stick and annotated script to Flowers by Vanessa Bouquets, Baskets,Table decorations, our audio editor. This usually takes about 1.5hrs from 7.30 to Weddings or Funerals 9pm.

PATIENT LIAISON GROUP SEASONAL WINTER ‘FLU VACCINATIONS Vaccination Clinics will be held on Saturday 6 October and Saturday 10 November from 9.00am and 1.00pm. Appointments are now available and can be made in the usual way via the surgery. Eligible and at-risk patients will receive a text reminder or letter and will be invited to make an appointment on either of these days.

FOR ST. NICHOLAS PATIENTS ONLY: A clinic will be held in the Village Hall on Friday 19 October between 12.00noon and 1.00pm but appointments MUST be booked in advance.

If you have any concerns about your eligibility or availability of the vaccination, especially if you are over 65, please contact reception. Please book now to ensure you get your preferred date and time.

THANK YOU! We are pleased to announce that our target to purchase an additional 24-hour Blood Pressure Monitor has been achieved and the equipment is now available for patient’s use. This should help alleviate the need for patients having to travel to hospital to be fitted for such tests. We would therefore like to thank everyone for their support and generous donations in helping us achieve our target so quickly.

MISSED APPOINTMENTS Last month 38 patients did not attend their doctor’s appointment and 56 did not attend their nurse’s appointment. With the average cost of £160 per appointment that’s another £15040 of wasted NHS funds. Please, if you don’t need it then cancel it, if you keep forgetting and you have a mobile phone then get our free text reminder service.

FRIENDS AND FAMILY SURVEY Thank you to all those patients who take part and please continue to do so. We welcome all your comments, good and bad, as they can help us to continually improve our service to all of our patients. Last month we received 204 patient responses to “Would you recommend our Practice” and the results are as follows: Extremely likely/Likely - 93%; Extremely unlikely/Unlikely - 4%; Unsure/Don’t know - 3%.

SURGERY CLOSURE DAYS Please note that the surgery will close from 1.00pm on the following days for staff training - Wednesday 17 October and Thursday 29 November.

Should you need to see a doctor during that time please call the NHS 111 Service via the normal surgery number 821333 where you will be transferred automatically. Or you can call direct on 111 to receive nonurgent confidential health advice and information for you and your family.

SPITFIRE MAKES A SPECIAL APPEARANCE OVER MINSTER On Saturday the 15th of September many Minster residents were startled when they heard the mighty whine of a WW2 Spitfire fighter plane at 1000 feet, following the route of our High Street. The roar of the Merlin engine then increased as the fighter climbed to four times that height, only to loop back down towards the church, roll and then veer off towards Monkton, going so low over Bonnies’ paddock that she said she could see the pilots’ faces.

This event had originally been arranged by Vivien Walford of the Old Oak Cottage, in the High Street, for

High Street and perform aerobatics over the marshes.

John then flew the plane back to within sight of

her husband John’s 75th birthday in August, however, due to aviation logistics the event turned into a joint celebration, eventually happening on their 50th golden wedding anniversary.

Vivien and John had left the following day for the village of Goudhurst to enjoy a stay in a luxury hotel for their anniversary, leaving for Headcorn airfield early the next morning.

The mark 9 spitfire (DB-E) had been flown into Headcorn airfield from Duxford by serving RAF officer Flight Lieutenant Charlie Brown, who John had flown with a few years ago from Lydd airport, and is known to

be one of the UK’s top classic pilots. There could be no better instructor for John’s flight.

After the pre-flight safety briefing and usual form filling, John was fitted with his flight suit, boots and gloves, helmet, life jacket and parachute, and along with his instructor and ground crew, out to the aircraft to be strapped tightly into the cockpit.

The flight plan was that Flt Lt. Brown handled take off procedure to 2000feet, with John then taking control and flying the aircraft to Deal, turning left to Sandwich and proceeding to Manston, the instructor then takes back control to reduce height and fly down Minster

Headcorn airfield, then handing back control to Charlie Brown, to complete more aerobatics to the delight of the public at the airport.

John said “This particular aircraft saw considerable action in WW2, downing many Messerschmitt bf 109s, and it is not until you hear the incredible noise of being strapped tightly behind a twelve cylinder Merlin engine with open exhausts, experience the smell, come to terms with the claustrophobic restriction of any movement in the cockpit, and witness how frail your entire surrounding structure is, that you realise how unbelievably brave and fearless our young pilots actually were.

It has always been easy to pay homage to ‘The Few’, but not until you have flown in a WW2 fighter plane can you even begin to understand the fear, and the extent the debt is that we actually owe to those young men to allow us all to live our lives as we have chosen.

THE AGELESS THANET 50+ FESTIVAL IS BACK! The annual Ageless Thanet 50+ Festival is being held on Sunday 4th November, at St. George’s School in Broadstairs. Doors will be open from 10am-3pm, and all ages are welcome! This is a free event to come along to, to find out what is available for people over 50, living in Thanet.

We’ve got some fantastic refreshment options booked for this year, including two of our 300 Age-Friendly Businesses: Our Kitchen in the Isle of Thanet, run by Sharon Goodyer who will be cooking up a storm with her healthy stir fries; vintage tea room, Bessie’s Tea Parlour will be bringing a touch of nostalgia to the event with their homemade food and drink. We also have Tea and Tiffin Tuk Tuk in the grounds offering coffee and cake.

With free taster sessions such as Tai Chi, Japanese Drumming, Singing, Samba, Belly Dancing, Boccia, Scottish Country Dancing and Healthy Cooking, to name just a few, it’s promising to be a fun-filled day. A survey conducted by ‘A Campaign to End Loneliness’ found that 88% of people believe that small moments of connection can help tackle loneliness, so don’t forget to come and get your hug!

MINSTER ARMBOUTS-CAPPEL TWINNING ASSOCIATION September bought the Committee back together for our first meeting after the summer break.

We have started to plan events for 2019 and a few ideas are beginning to take shape, so keep a lookout for details in this magazine over the coming months.

On the Saturday 8 September another successful quiz took place at the British Legion and this year all profits are going to the Minster Christmas Lights Fund.

We’ll be making a presentation of the money to the Lights Organisers shortly.

Our next event is a Race Night on Saturday 6 October at 7.00pm, again at the Royal British Legion. The cost is £15.00 per person, which includes a quality 3 course meal (with choices) and if last year’s event is anything to go by, it will be a real fun evening. Make sure of your place by contacting Kathryn on 07825 601 601.

The Twinning Association AGM will take place on Friday 16 November at 7.30pm in the Neighbourhood Centre above the Library, if you’re interested in getting involved with this Association please do come along.

On Sunday 11 November it will of course be the 100th Anniversary of the ending of World War One and Minster will be paying respect to all those whose lives were lost during that terrible conflict. A number of our French colleagues will be coming across to pay their respects at our Memorial Service whilst some of our members will be going to France to attend the Service at their Memorial.

Both our Countries suffered great losses during the conflict, we should remember them.

"Give A Bag Some Life" with the Thanet Good Neighbours Service

"Give A Bag Some Life" gives you the chance to decorate a canvas bag to your heart’s content and support the Thanet Community Support Partnership (TCSP) in the process.

All completed bags will be photographed to form a gallery - and then sold to the public at various locations and events in the run-up to Christmas, with all moneys raised going to TCSP and the work we do to support the Thanet community.

No pre-existing arts or creative skills are required – we would just be delighted for you to take part. If you would like a bag to decorate, contact GNS Co-ordinator Rebecca on 01843 609336, who will give you all the guidance you need to decorate your bag and arrange for a time for you to collect it. If you can't wait, here are some initial points to consider, as your mind begins to race with ideas: �� Our TCSP logo needs to be applied to one of the bottom corners of the bag, with a 1½” or 4cm margin from the edges; �� You only have to decorate one side of the bag (the side with the badge) but are most welcome to decorate both if you would like to; �� We would ask that you avoid religious, political or offensive images or wording on your bag.

We must also pass on a huge word of thanks to Thanet Rotary who liked our “Give A Bag Some Life” idea so much that they gave us the money to purchase the canvas bags and TCSP logos, meaning that 100 per cent of the money raised will go towards the project.

The Thanet Good Neighbours Service is open to anybody aged 60 or above, and our volunteer befrienders can help by: �� Visiting for a cup of tea and a chat (“traditional befriending”) �� Going out shopping with / for you �� Going with you for a stroll or short trip �� De-cluttering We can also support with: �� Regular chats over the phone �� Helping us on the admin or organising side of things �� Attending one of our monthly lunches Our volunteers are not carers, cleaners or nurses, but can help by simply being a friend. At the September meeting of the WI members and visitors were warmly welcomed, then were asked to keep a short silence in memory of founder member and former president Jean Fuller, and former member Betty Southgate who both had sadly died since the last meeting.

They then enjoyed an interesting and very entertaining talk by Susan Scrivens about her introduction to and adventures in beekeeping, accompanied by an excellent slide show.

After a break for refreshments, members were told of our successes in the Minster Show with first prizes for both the co-operative entry and in the walking fancy dress where six members dressed as Suffragettes paraded with placards bearing past national resolutions. Their Teddy and Soft Toy tombola stall provided by individual members, raised a generous donation for the Dementia Support fund at QEQM hospital.

Later business included reports on an enjoyable Bat and Trap evening followed by fish and chips, and an excellent coach outing to tour the Houses of Parliament. Future plans include a Thanet group meeting in October, Minster WI Annual Meeting and a Dabble Day in November, the Christmas Party in December and an Open Tea Party to celebrate the Centenary of the WI in East Kent in 2019.

KENT HOUSEHOLD WASTE RECYCLING CENTRE CONSULTATION

The consultation opened on 6 September 2018 and closes on 1 November 2018.

Kent County Council (KCC) is not legally obligated to accept nonhousehold wastes e.g. soil, rubble, hardcore and plasterboard at Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs).

Moving forward it is vital that there is enough capacity in the county for Kent residents to dispose of their household waste and to protect these services.

KCC has no statutory requirement to accept non-household waste (soil, rubble, hardcore and plasterboard). However, it is appreciated that from time to time Kent residents may need to dispose of these materials, therefore KCC would like to continue to offer a service.

KCC already makes a charge to accept domestic tyres for recycling (classed as non-household waste), with the fee covering the cost of

managing this service. In order to continue to provide a disposal service for these materials in the future, KCC is proposing to extend the non-household waste charging policy to include: Soil, Rubble and Hardcore This also includes other materials such as ceramics which are recycled in the soil, rubble and hardcore container.

A daily limit on soil, rubble and hardcore, in-line with current restrictions will apply – a maximum of 5 bags / items (a bag can be up to the size of a standard black sack). The policy to limit these materials was introduced in 2012 to prevent trade waste abuse.

Plasterboard KCC is open minded to charging a modest fee. The disposal charge would be in line with our neighbouring Councils that already charge for these materials and will off-set the cost of providing and maintaining this valuable service.

In line with neighbouring Councils, in Kent we anticipate the charge to be: Soil, Rubble and Hardcore: £4 per bag (or part bag) / item (a bag being up to the size of a standard black sack Plasterboard: £6 per bag (or part bag) / sheet (a bag being up to the size of a standard black sack Your participation in this consultation and views on this proposal are important and will help KCC to carefully consider options and inform any decision. Whether you are a past, current or future user of these services, a member of the public, a carer or relative of a service user, an existing or potential provider of services, or another stakeholder, we would now like to hear your views before a final recommendation is discussed by the Environment and Transport Cabinet Committee, prior to the Cabinet Member taking the decision late 2018 / early 2019.

THE 14th ANNUAL BIKE RIDE IN MEMORY OF JAKE PHILPOTT On Sunday 26th August, we arrived at the Royal British Legion for our annual bike ride, not knowing if the dreadful weather forecast had put people off, we were overwhelmed by the great turnout over 40 riders of family and friends plus the older family and the very young also there to see us off and meet up with us at each stop along the way. Our very own AA [Alan and Anne] had joined us with the truck again in case of emergency.

We set off at 11 o’clock and our first hurdle of the day are the new speed bumps and as yet unmarked ramp in Acol although I am sure they have been welcomed in the village, I can’t say the same when going over them on a bike... Ouch!! ..through Birchington to Minnis Bay where we have our first welcome breather, as we set off along the sea wall towards Reculver although the sun is out there are grey clouds looming and the wind is getting stronger and is "head on" but heads down and on we go and eventually everyone has made it to the Ethelbert at Reculver for a chance to get a drink and a short rest before we all head off for the next stop The Gate at Marshside every year we stop here, 40+ people buying drinks and food and yet we are never welcomed like in all the other pubs, so this year when the wait for a drink was reaching 15 minutes and the chance of getting food, even a bowl of chips, much longer [we’d even phoned ahead to say we were on our way] some of us decided to leave and get going to the Grove Ferry where we could get food and a couple drinks whilst waiting for everyone to catch up and continue on our way.. this was the point at which that our plan failed us because a few minutes after leaving, the heavens opened and we were absolutely drenched, it’s getting harder to see as the rain is battering us, passing cars are drowning us and we can just see black sky ahead.

We are now worrying that this is no longer going to be enjoyable for everyone so a decision is made, when we get to the Grove we will organise getting people back to Minster so on arriving we ask Alan how many bikes he’d get in his truck he loads up 5 but can only take one passenger, Grace phones her dad[Chris Birch] and he gets

there and rescues 6 more people, it’s still chucking it down so Jay [Grossmith] phones Emily [Johnson] and soon she’s there with the big van, that’s the next 9 bikes on their way home, Jay promises he’ll be back with the truck to do another run when the next lot of riders arrive at the pub, we send off the last few people in cars with those family following us round and now wait for all the others… With the rain easing slightly everyone else decides there is no way they want to stop now and soaked to the skin they continue on, stopping at the next two pubs they even said it was just as enjoyable as other year despite the weather.

The conversation was mainly about who had got the wettest and a round of applause for each one arriving back because by now it had been raining constantly for hours but once everyone was back we could enjoy the food laid on and get some well-earned drinks Now it just leaves me to do the Thank you's... Kathy at the club for organizing the food, Cynthia Doreen and Min who did pick-ups but also who travelled round with the youngest family Dawson and Freddie, to young Josh Matheson who is now veteran and usually the youngest rider but this year that was Jake Grossmith well done boys, But the biggest thanks go to each and every one of you who turned up once again to join us for this special day ,it means everything to us that when we started this 14yrs ago as a day to come together and ride to remember Jake, that we would still be joined by so many friends and family every year so we hope to see you all again next year .

Minster Parish Council Meeting Summary of Key Points - 4th September, 2018 There was no Council meeting in August so there were quite a few items on the agenda this month.

We began with a summary from Community Warden, Aaron Kluibenschadl, which stated that it had thankfully been a relatively quiet period in the parish over the past two months. Police Community Support Officer Adrian Butterworth gave us more detail; it seems there have been 106 calls to Kent Police over the two months which included a range of subjects. The most serious related to a burglary at the home of an elderly resident in Prospect Road where intruders entered in the early hours of the morning and stole her handbag; this contained cash and other personal documents. Support is being provided to the victim and as yet there is no progress in the investigation. If anyone has any information on this dreadful crime, please come forward.

He confirmed that a female driver was arrested after colliding with the wall of the village hall; Cllr. Bailey stated that they were still assessing the extent of the damage.

Other reports included the theft of two bicycles from outside the New Inn, damage to a gate in Ebbsfleet Lane, linked to travellers in the area, and a number of anti-social and domestic incidents.

PCSO Butterworth identified a nuisance motor cyclist riding on the recreation ground and the youth has now been advised in the presence of his parents. He has still been unable to identify the youths congregating in the cemetery despite numerous visits to the site. Such gatherings are wholly inappropriate and insensitive so any information would be welcome. It is hoped that the end of the summer holiday period may see an end to this nuisance.

He thanked Cllr. Owen for his recent cooperation in reviewing CCTV footage in relation to a number of enquiries.

He concluded by thanking everyone for their support for the Skate Park Graffiti Project scheduled for 22nd September. He encouraged the community to come along and support the painting of a mural; music and refreshments will be available.

Cllr. Crow-Brown reminded the meeting that the Local Plan consultation has now started and urged residents to respond, whatever their views. This subject was discussed later in the meeting when Cllr. Pugh and the Chairman emphasised that all previous responses to Thanet District Council are not taken into account by the Planning Inspectorate so it is important to respond again. Details are contained in the documents available in the library and on line on the council website. The main changes are the retention of the airport site for 2 years pending the decision on aviation use; this has resulted in additional housing numbers in Westgate, Birchington and Minster. There is also an extensive transport plan. A response will be prepared by the Parish Council.

The closing date is 4th October.

Cllr. Crow-Brown spoke of the many thousands of pounds which has been spent by Cummins, Stone Hill Park and TDC clearing up after unlawful Traveller incursions in the area over recent months.

A discussion took place about the need for more powers to deal with such incidents. Perhaps letters to our MP’s.

He was asked about what the intended use of the site at the Spitfire junction is; it seems that Virgin Media are using it for storage at the moment, and it will then be used to store caravans.

October 2018 The Chairman said that as the Secretary of State has accepted Riveroak’s application for a DCO in relation to Manston Airport there is now the opportunity for comment. Again, documents and information on how to do this are available in the library; the closing date is 8th October.

A review of the Minster Emergency Plan is currently taking place and the Chairman encouraged local people to volunteer to be called in a case of emergency. Details are available from the parish office.

Several road safety issues were confirmed including yellow bar markings on the eastern approach to Minster roundabout in an effort to reduce accidents. New village signs have been approved to be erected at the northern end of Tothill Street. Additional yellow lines will be painted in the main village area in the near future and Cllr. Day suggested that once completed we liaise with TDC regarding increased enforcement.

Cllr. Quittenden spoke of the plans to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War on Sunday 11th November. The Queen’s Pageant Master has asked that Minster take part in a beacon lighting ceremony in the evening, which will be accompanied by a piper, a bugler and the delivery of a proclamation; there will also be fireworks. All this is in addition to the usual parade, church service and ceremony at the memorial in the cemetery on the morning of that day.

KCC Cllrs. Dawson and Hurst have agreed to provide financial support for this event and Minster Parish Council voted to donate £1000.

He confirmed that the project to adorn the village with thousands of poppies is going really well; over 16,600 have been made, so only a few more to reach the target of 17,000! Everyone expressed their congratulations on such an achievement. Work has now begun to attach them to panels ready to be displayed and any help with this would be welcome.

The Clerks have prepared and circulated a response to the KCC Public Rights of Way consultation and all members agreed that it was excellent and should be submitted on behalf of the parish.

The Chairman reported some good news! Last year Sunley Estates wrote of their plans to build a house on the green space in Hill House Drive. A letter of objection was written and then, with the support of evidence from residents, a village green application was submitted to KCC in an effort to protect the site from development. It has taken some time for this to be actioned by KCC but when they finally contacted the landowners early in August this year, Sunley Estates decided that they would transfer ownership of the land to Minster Parish Council. It will not be built on!

The paths in the cemetery are in a poor state of repair so the parish council has accepted a quote of £24,460 to re-tarmac the majority of them; it is hoped that this can be completed in the next few weeks.

Cllr. Bailey confirmed that the Art Exhibition will run from 5th to 7th October at the Village Hall and Cllr. Quittenden said that the Twinning Association will be holding a Race Night at the British Legion on 6th October.

There were only a few questions from the public this time which included the use of CCTV at the cemetery, the height of the new pylons across the marshes and concerns about traveller incursions.

Welcome to this month’s input. I would firstly like to appeal to any parents of teenage children. Across the Island at the moment we are getting a lot of calls in relation to large groups of teens on push bikes riding in the middle of the roads and showing off by riding with the front wheel in the air. This is causing a lot of distress to bus and car drivers who are concerned that should the child lose control the driver may not be able to react in time to prevent any injury.

We are also getting calls in relation to mindless criminal damage to park furniture and graffiti on the skate park ramps. I know you cannot watch your children all of the time but please be aware of what they may have been doing.

I would also like to warn all residents that there are always persons around who will try and get you to part with your hard earned money. At the moment there are persons going door to door selling dusters polish and other products.

They will claim to be ex forces or an ex offender. Please do not buy products on the door step. Send them away politely.

If you notice anyone acting suspiciously contact the police on 999 or 101.

Kate’s Puddings – what’s cooking?

What I particularly like about modern cheesecakes is that they are so easy….. no raw eggs, no whisking egg whites and cream in separate bowls…. Yes, there’s gelatine, but that goes on afterwards. So, there’s really nothing to worry about, and nothing to stop you from making this fabulous recipe. If time is short, do the base one day, the middle the next and finally the gel glaze. The chocolate layer keeps the base crisp. I made this for Stour Music, hence the little chocolate scribbled notes on the top.

Bailey’s and Chocolate Cheesecake 8oz/225g digestive biscuits, crushed to crumbs 4oz/110g butter 4oz/110g dark chocolate 8oz/225g cream cheese or soft cheese (full fat) 8oz/225g Mascarpone cheese (or just cream cheese) 3oz/75g icing sugar 10floz/280ml double cream Baileys Irish Cream 2 sheets gelatine softened in water 5 floz/140ml Bailey’s Irish Cream 2oz/60g dark chocolate Line a 9” spring clip tin with parchment. Melt the butter in a bowl, add the biscuit crumbs, mix well and spread them over the base of the tin. Chill in the fridge until set. Melt the chocolate and spread it over the chilled biscuits. Allow to set.

In a Magimix, beat together the cream cheese, Mascarpone, icing sugar, cream and a glug of Baileys (unmeasurable, but you know what I mean). Beat until the cream thickens up.

Scoop this mixture into the tin and level it. Allow to chill for at least an hour. Now take the gelatine and soften it in water.

Warm the Baileys to approx. blood heat before melting the gelatine into it – if it doesn’t dissolve, heat the Baileys a bit further). Wait until the gelatine has started to cool and set, then pour it over the cheesecake.

Chill for a couple of hours until set.

To make the chocolate scribble, melt the chocolate and pipe it onto baking parchment. Chill in the fridge. Simple designs work best.

To remove from the tin, run a knife or thin spatula around the edge so that, when you remove the clip, the jelly layer does not break (nor do you lose a lot of the cheesecake on the sides of the tin, though that’s a cook’s bonus!).
