Thank you to everyone who supported the Show this year in whatever capacity, whether you were involved in organising, assisting, competing, entertaining or just visiting - without you it wouldn’t happen, so thank you again. Kevin Remember you can get involved with the Committee and help make the 2017 Show better than ever - come along, show your support and get involved at our AGM on Friday 14 October 7.30pm at the Neighbourhood Centre - we look forward to seeing you there EDITORIAL I love a good moan as most of you who regularly read my editorial will know so not to disappoint you this month I just want to say we often receive unsigned letters or anonymous texts which go straight in the bin without a second thought, if you aren’t brave enough to put your name to anything you write then don’t bother writing it, as it’s just a waste of your time. Now on a happier note you’ll read elsewhere in this issue about how the village flagpole is progressing and I’d like to thank everyone who is involved in actually doing their bit to make it happen, thanks also goes to a former resident (whom I won’t name at this time) for their very kind offer to purchase some flags for us - to that person - if you’re reading this I will be in touch very soon now I know what we require. Well that seems to be about as much as I can squeeze in again, so it just leaves me to ask the usual question -”Where’s Zac?” Gel Polish on fingers and toes only £28 Book now to avoid disappointment

Appointments are now available and can be made in the usual way via the surgery. SO DON’T DELAY - BOOK YOURS TODAY Eligible and “at risk” patients will receive a reminder on their “Repeat Prescription List” and/or text message, and will be invited to make an appointment. If you have any concerns about your eligibility please contact Reception. NEW EQUIPMENT BRINGS NEW ENHANCED FACILITIES Please see elsewhere in this the publication, an article and pictures covering the presentation of new equipment on 14 September, generously donated by Mrs Richardson. The equipment that we previously announced as our new project was one of the items donated during the presentation, and as we go to press we are in discussion with the Practice Partners and will announce our next new project at the ‘Flu Days, with full details being displayed on our notice board in the waiting room. DONATION We would like to express our sincere thanks to the families and friends of both the late Mrs Barbara Prescott and Mr. Malcolm Smith, whose generosity has enabled the Practice to purchase an additional “CardioPad Portable ECG Machine” which was recently presented to Dr C Crosfield. This will be of great benefit to the Practice especially when a patient needs to be visited at home by a GP or other Healthcare Professionals. NEW GP REGISTRARS AT THE SURGERY We are delighted to welcome two new Registrars who have recently joined the Practice: Dr Lesley Greenway - who will be with us until August 2017 and Dr Thakshayini Thivyattasan who will be with us until December 2016. FRIENDS AND FAMILY SURVEY Last month patient’s responses to “would you recommend our Practice” were as follows: Extremely likely/Likely - 89%; Extremely unlikely/Unlikely - 6%; Unsure/Don’t know - 5% MISSED APPOINTMENTS Last month two less patients missed their doctor’s appointment, thank you, but the number still missing their nurse’s appointment is disappointing. As a result 32 patients did not attend their doctor’s appointment and 71 failed to attend their nurse’s appointment, so that is still over 100 patients missing appointments! Don’t need it – cancel it. Keep forgetting – get our text reminder service. A sincere thank you to all those who do attend, cancel or apologise in advance, so as others may benefit. SURGERY CLOSURE DAYS Please note that the surgery will close from 12.00noon onwards for staff training on the following days: Thursday 29 September: Wednesday 19 October; Thursday 24 November. Please ensure that you have sufficient medication to last you during these times, and of course, please don’t forget to include all the family who may require repeat prescriptions and check when their medication review appointment is due. Should you need to see a Doctor when the surgery is closed, please call the NHS 111 Service via the normal surgery number 821 333 where you will be transferred automatically, or you can call direct on 111, to receive non-urgent confidential health advice and information for you and your family. For urgent/life threatening cases please dial 999 as normal. A DATE FOR YOUR DIARY! Our ANNUAL CHRISTMAS BAZAAR will be held on Saturday 26 November. As this is our most popular event, tables are highly sought after, and there are only a few left. So please book now to avoid disappointment. ANNUAL CHRISTMAS RAFFLE - Win top prize worth over £100 and much more! We will be launching our “GRAND RAFFLE” with nearly £500 worth of prizes including a Rose Arch and Planters, Hand Made Rocking Horse, Luxury Christmas Hamper and many more. Tickets will be on sale at the “Flu Days” and thereafter at the surgery. The draw will be made at our Annual Christmas Bazaar. PATIENT GROUP MEETING If you have any issues you would like to raise at our next meeting, or require further information on any of the above, then please contact either Ken Self on 821 200 or Jeanne Lawrence on 821 049 or email kenself@me.com

MINSTER W.I. President, Sarah Eaton Brown welcomed everyone to the monthly meeting at 7.30pm on Tuesday 13 September in the Village Hall. After a rousing rendition of Jerusalem she thanked helpers and participants in the Summer events, especially those who organised our Minster Show 2nd prizewinning Co-operative entry and the Teddy Tombola stall. The Bat and Trap evening in August, with fish and chip supper, was a huge success too. Sarah then introduced David who gave an extremely informative talk about the valuable work of the Kent Air Ambulance Service and the need for public support. After refreshments Sarah talked about the Annual Group Meeting on the 26 October, Minster WI being the hosts, announcing a fan-making competition and requesting cake baking for the event. Before the raffle members were reminded that our meeting on 11 October, is a Craft and Social evening. Those who wish can make poppies for our own Minster Remembrance Service wreath, play board games or just generally socialise! There will be a baking competition with members voting on the best plate of biscuits. Kate’s Puddings – what’s cooking?

Minster Matters

This is an update on the classic Key Lime Pie, with a delicious twist of basil. Very simple to make, it’s a firm favourite with my family, friends and also at the Stour Festival, where it is always one of the first to be finished. What my father would describe as “the accolade of the empty plate”! This serves about 8. Lime and Basil Crunch Pie 8oz/230g Gingernuts or Hobnobs, crushed (use gluten free biscuits if wished) 4oz/110 g butter, melted Juice and zest of 4 limes 1 can condensed milk (full fat) ½ pint/300ml double cream Small handful of fresh basil leaves, chopped, but not too fine 1 lime for decoration Grease a 9” springclip tin and put baking parchment in the base. Mix the crushed biscuits with the melted butter and spread into the tin, levelling out. Put in the fridge to allow the butter to harden. Whisk the condensed milk, cream and lime zest and juice together for about 5 minutes or so until it has thickened. This is best done with a Kenwood/Kitchen Aid mixer, or at least a deep bowl so you don’t redecorate the kitchen! Lastly, add the basil leaves and stir in. Pour the mixture onto the biscuit base, level the top and chill for at least half an hour so that it sets. Cut the last lime into thin pieces and arrange over the top. When you remove this from the tin, remember that it has paper underneath… For more delicious recipes look at www.katespuddings.co.uk

LETTER TO THE EDITOR I am not often compelled to moan, but the situation with traffic flow and parking around school times is, in my opinion and many others I've spoken to, no better probably worse since the alterations! Great that they made parking spaces along Taylor Road. to stop congestion. Then they go and widen the path and allow cars to park around the corner at the butchers causing congestion. Do they plan to put yellow lines there? In St Mary’s Road where I live, great they put yellow lines on the corners, by the school, but why put them further up the road… which hasn't stopped people from parking there anyway. Has anyone thought about the residents of St Mary's Road parking their cars? It was a race with time to get there before schools chuck out, now it is even worse as there are less spaces and parents get there earlier to get a space. How about subsidising cost to have kerb drop so we can use a driveway… or allowing permits for residents? Cannot a bigger parking area be made at the back of the school somewhere… many other areas have been utilised around there. Maybe, rather than build loads more houses around that area, they should have built a car park! Maybe, the planners and decision makers of this change should spend a week living in St Mary’s Road… spend ages driving round and round the estate because there is nowhere to stop and wait for a parking space. I finish work at either 2.30 or 3 from a very early start and would like to come home to relax, not have the stress of driving around wasting my time, adding to congestion and risk of accidents! Any helpful response welcome! Regards, Ann James.

POTHOLE REPORTING Kent County Council's pothole blitz has been going on this summer with so far 839 potholes filled alongside 24,108m2 of larger road repairs across the county. The work includes filling individual holes alongside repairs to larger areas which can see multiple potholes repaired at the same time with, in total, £954,471 has been spent on repairs since June. We aim to make a permanent, quality repair by cutting out a small section of the road around the hole, clearing out the old material and filling it with new Tarmac. If a road has lots of potholes, it may need a larger patch or work is programmed in to resurface the whole section. Where possible, the fix will then be protected by surface dressing the whole road in the near future, to prevent damage by the next winter weather. Lines and verges are also receiving a spruce up. I hope that you will have noticed work in your parish but KCC still needs your help by reporting any potholes that may remain un-repaired, though these are likely to be already included in the planned work programme. I would be grateful if you could report any un-repaired IRONING SERVICE potholes online, as this is the quickest Need a quick efficient and easiest way to alert crews to damage to the roads. Once reported, ironing service? it will be inspected by a local crew and I supply a collection/delivery service if work is necessary, it will be free to Minster, Monkton & Cliffsend programmed in to be fixed. No pile to big or too small For the latest updates week-byweek, and to report a pothole, please Smoke/pet free home visit For more information contact

Minster Matters 12th Memory Bike Ride JAKE PHILPOTT August  28th  2016 (See picture on front cover)

This year I want to dedicate this write up to FAMILY, as with the last 11 rides, this year’s bike ride of 26 miles, was just as brilliant and with over 40 riders was a great sight as we left the British Legion on to Reculver then through the countryside, visiting all the, now familiar watering holes on the route, hoping the weather would hold, which it did, glad that nobody needed Alan and his truck for assistance, other than a broken chain, that was soon fixed and then everyone making it back safely to the Legion in one piece, just made it a really great day. ..But back to FAMILY, this Ride to Remember came about because of our family tragedy at losing Jake at just 15 years old very suddenly. We wanted to do something so we and others could show Dave Hayley and Levi, in some small way that we wanted to share and remember Jake with them in a happy way and so the Ride to Remember started. Our wider family (there is a lot of them) all get involved, those that can ride do, and those

October 2016 who can’t ride join us at the pubs, older and younger family they are all involved in some way. Over the last 12 years a lot of the younger ones have now got families of their own and they too are joining in. We have some great friends who also come year after year, some come with their whole family, others join their families once back safely, these youngsters are hopefully the next generation that will keep this special day going for years to come. Family is quite often the only thing that matters when times are tough, but more importantly, they are the people that make the good times really special. We are lucky to have such a great family and good friends, so this year, which was the first without Dad (Malc) the Family pulled together and made this wonderful day very special.  To Cynthia (Mum), Doreen, Min and Sue thank you for the food on our return, thank you to Alan for following with his truck , well done Josh (the youngest rider again), to the British Legion and Kathy, a huge thank you to you all. But most of all to our FAMILY and FRIENDS well done to you all, thanks for being there it really does mean so much, so to our "bike riding family", see you all again next year. XXXX

Eating alone Meal times are traditionally social occasions, a time to catch up with the day’s activities and to chat. Meal times are often the only time the family gets together. Quality time to share and enjoy food with those you care about.

Exciting News - New Charity Shop in Margate We are moving to larger premises, the new Age UK Thanet charity shop will still be located on the High street in Margate, but we will have more room to display our merchandise. It will be easier for our customers to move around the shop and will give us an opportunity to display goods more effectively.

For many older people meal times are not happy times at all. Sitting alone with a plate of food, day after day, can be a bit depressing. This often, results in people losing their appetite and not bothering very much about eating. Obviously if this continues significant health problems can arise.

Everyone is very excited about the move and looking forward to being established in our new home. Our charity shop raises vital funds to help support the work Age UK Thanet does throughout the local area. We have a large group of regular customers, which is lovely. A growing number of people use charity shops because of the environmental and ethical benefits of the reuse of goods, rather than buying completely new goods, or dumping new or barely used goods.

Age UK Thanet is trying to encourage older people to eat and is looking for volunteer lunch buddies to visit someone at lunch time and join them for lunch. Eating together will hopefully make meal times more enjoyable again. Meal buddy volunteers will be provided with a free cooked meal. If you would like to become a meal buddy please contact Gill Ball on 07735 556 811 or email her on agecorecruiter@btinternet.com.

Quite a lot of our stock is new and unworn, still with labels on. A huge “thank you” to everyone who donates to us, we couldn’t manage without you. If you have something you would like to donate, please either deliver it directly to our shop or to our centre in Zion Place (next door to the Casino and Aldi). We are also looking for new volunteers to join us in our new shop. If you regularly have a little time to spare and would like to find out more about volunteering with us, please contact Gill Ball on 07735 556 811 or email agecorecruiter@btinternet.com.

MINSTER ARMBOUTS CAPPEL TWINNING ASSOCIATION The recent quiz we held at the Royal British Legion was very well supported and our thanks go to all who made it a success, organisers and quizzers alike. Extra tables had to be put up as the demand was greater than expected, so all future quizzes will probably need to have tables booked in advance to guarantee entry. The result of the Treasure Hunt on 18 September will be reported in the next issue of this magazine and we’re hoping for a good turn-out. We have been asked by the Art Show organisers if we would like to hold a raffle throughout the weekend of 30 September to 2 October to boost our funds. If anyone has any unwanted or unused gifts that they would like to offer, then Carol Bubb on 01843 447 706 would be pleased to collect them. Tickets for the Race Night in the Village Hall on 29 October are obtainable from O’Sheas on 01843 823 091, along with a menu choice of 3 courses to accompany the racing. An excellent evening was enjoyed last year, so book early to avoid disappointment. We have invited our friends from France and hopefully there will be 7-9 of them joining us for the evening. There are 2 spare tickets for the coach trip to Winchester on 26 November at £15 per person. Are you interested? Then please contact Carol Bubb on 01843 447 706 The Twinning Association AGM will be held in the Neighbourhood Centre, Monkton Road, Minster, on Friday 18 November at 7.30 pm. All are welcome to attend.

VOLUNTEERS WANTED Minster Parish Council staff work tirelessly to keep the village to the standard we are all used to seeing, but unfortunately, with government cutbacks, it is getting increasingly difficult. Minster has a small group of volunteers who look after and maintain two footpaths in the village. An even smaller group is working on the High Street car park to make it a nicer area. We are now looking to enhance the cemetery area. Do you love Minster and would like to help out? Do you have a few hours to spare per week/month? Are you aged between 15 and 100? Would you like to have volunteering listed on your University application? Are you embarking on a Duke of Edinburgh Award and require a community scheme to join? If you would like to join any of the above groups, or have another area of the village that you would like to see improved, then please contact The Clerk, Kyla Lamb at clerk@minsterparishcouncil.org.uk or ring 821 339.

Zac’s Musings Phew, has it been hot or what? The recent rain was such a godsend cooling the air so we could all sleep, only problem with it is I hate getting wet, so I’ve had to do a lot of leg-crossing until to wait any longer was impossible then it was a quick dash out the back and in again ASAP!! All’s been very quiet in our house for a few weeks but I always know when it is magazine weekend as tempers get fraught and the air changes to a sombre shade of blue, especially when there’s loads of typing to do or he’s lost something that he remembers being given 2 weeks previously but can’t lay his hand on it now. Everything but the kitchen sink is moved in an effort to find the elusive piece of paper only to eventually have it turn up where he’d looked at the very outset. He reckons I hide them on purpose but I can assure him I’d rather he remembered to put them in the same place each month it would save me having to suffer the earache he gives me whilst tearing the place apart. We’ve had a hedgehog visit recently which has large white patches of spines - looks most odd., but it’s been a talking point between the grandchildren who found him (or it could be a her). We even had a squirrel in the garden the other morning balancing along the top of the fence - never seen one of those here before, the closest trees are such long way off I reckon he must have been lost. NEXTDOOR - FLAGPOLE PROJECT A site has now been selected for the location of our new flagpole - it will be positioned at the junction of Monkton Road and Taylor Road on the green opposite Cliffe’s where at present there is a dead tree. This tree is to be removed and at the same time other work will be carried out on the living tree (to raise its crown) plus an old stump (to be ground out) in the same area. The flower bed where the pole will be situated is to also undergo a transformation with some new planting. It has also been agreed we will supply a new ‘Village’ flag and Nextdoor members have been given the opportunity to decide on its colour. It will be British Racing Green with an image of the existing village sign and a line of text which will read ‘Twinned with ARMBOUTSCAPPEL, France’. This private social network continues to grow within the village and our coverage has now been extended to include Monkton, Acol, Manston and Cliffsend. Residents within this new area should have received a flyer from us to that effect, so we hope to welcome many of them soon.

PATIENT LIAISON GROUP PRESENTATION WEDNESDAY 14 SEPTEMBER NEW EQUIPMENT BRINGS NEW ENHANCED FACILITIES TO MINSTER SURGERY Thanks to a very generous donation by a Minster patient and resident, new “State of the Art” equipment has been purchased for the practice resulting in two new facilities becoming available at Minster Surgery, for which patients would generally have had to travel to hospital or await test results, but all that can now be carried out at the surgery. The presentation, arranged by Ken Self, Chairman of the Patient Liaison Group, was held at the surgery on Wednesday 14 September, where Mrs Helen Richardson officially handed over the equipment to Dr M Elliott, a Senior Partner at the Practice. Ken was asked by Mrs Richardson to explain to all present her reasons for her donations by reading out a letter she had previously written. Having been a resident in the village for over 20 years, it was to say thank you to the English people for giving her and her family a second chance after being forced from their home in Estonia during the war in 1942, and for the excellent care given to her husband by Dr Elliott since they came to live in the village. Firstly Mrs Richardson presented a “Bard Bladder Scanner” - which is be used to detect various bladder problems immediately, and thus facilitate early diagnosis and treatment, and of course, patient reassurance. She dedicated this to the memory of her sister. She then presented a “Huntleigh Dopplex Ability ABI System” which is used to diagnose “Peripheral Arterial Disease” and immediately helps identify the potential risk of future Cardiovascular, Blood Clots and Diabetes problems. This new system is far less time consuming for patients and results in more efficient use of healthcare resources, giving an overall better patient experience. This was dedicated to the memory of her mother. On behalf of all members of the Practice, Dr Elliott expressed his sincere thanks to Mrs Richardson and was overwhelmed by her generosity. Mrs Richardson then went on to say she would like to do something similar in memory of her father, and various suggestions were put forward which she is considering. Also attending the presentation were Jodie O’Shaughnessy, “Bard UK Territory Manager”, Tracy Thomas, “Williams Medical Development Manager”, members of the Surgery’s Nursing Team and the Nurse Practitioner, who then attended a demonstration and familiarisation of the new equipment along with members of the Patient Liaison Group.

October 2016 Minster Parish Council Meeting Tuesday 6 September Summary of Key Points ● County Cllr. Latchford reminded the council that he had set aside £1k to assist with the Minster ‘Shed’ project and £2k to assist with the update of the village CCTV system and that we need to use it as soon as possible. ● Cllr. Latchford expressed concern that KCC had issued a letter to TDC firmly in support of the Stonehill Park development, apparently flying in the face of a previous agreement to support the airport. The matter will be before the Scrutiny Committee on Monday. ● Cllr. Latchford also reported that there will be a meeting with the Police and Crime Commissioner on Thursday next regarding the issue of Thanet South Election costs. ● Chairman Cllr. Bob Grove has raised the issue of Police Community Support Officers having the power to enforce parking restrictions with MP Roger Gale and we now await an answer from Ch. Insp. Adley. ● Bell Helicopters have replied to the Parish Council enquiry about the number of helicopters flying over the village and will advise their pilots accordingly but reminded us that other helicopter operators do fly in this area. They have been contacted. ● The Chairman has been in consultation with TDC Leader Chris Wells and KCC regarding the Parish Council’s proposal to hold back development in this parish until the future of Manston is decided. In the meantime, there will be a traffic count and pollution test in the parish, both relating to key areas of concern re: increased building/population. ● A petition has gone to TDC supporting the suggestion that the No.9 bus route should be varied to come into the village. ● The renovated village sign is now ready and we await a new post on which to mount it. ● The Chairman will meet with Ray Mallon on 9th September for further discussion re: Stonehill Park development and the implications for this parish. ● The Clerk to the Council reported that the repair and painting of the chapel windows at the cemetery is in progress. ● Concerns have been raised about the new ‘One Way’ system in Thorne Road/St. Mary’s Road. Some are confused and others simply ignore the no entry signs. In addition, the build out in Monkton Road at the top of Taylor Road to prevent parking has been ignored with vehicles actually parking on the build

out and causing increasing difficulties for all road users and pedestrians. The matter of enforcement will be pursued as mentioned above. The passing place in Laundry Road has still to be progressed. Cllr. Jones has submitted proposals to improve the traffic situation in the parish and members of the parish council highways committee have all been invited to submit suggestions which will be considered by KCC Highways. Cllr. Gimes, who is part of a working party preparing a Community Emergency Plan, reported that there had been a limited response to the letter circulated in the Minster Matters asking for volunteers who would be willing to assist in the unlikely event that there is an emergency on the village. She thanked those who had come forward so far; posters will be placed on noticeboards around the area in the hope of encouraging more responses. A letter had been received suggesting that signage to the All Weather Pitch, Play Area, etc. should be increased; the matter was discussed and the conclusion was that this was not necessary at the present time. A resident has suggested that a ‘pay and play’ arrangement be allowed for the All Weather Pitch; this has been referred to the Operations committee. A very high quote for repairing the fencing around the All Weather Pitch has been received; the damage is caused by people cutting holes to enter and use the pitch without permission. After discussion it was agreed to delay this and effect another temporary repair for the time being in the hope that more youngsters will make full use of the new multi-use games area, free and open to all. Cllr Quittenden reported on a meeting of the Kent Assn. of Local Councils (Thanet). The Police and Crime Commissioner had declined to attend the meeting to discuss policing in Thanet, and Broadstairs are considering using private security on the seafront at weekends. The new Monkton CCTV was reported as being very effective. The parish councils expressed concerns that they are not given sufficient opportunity to contribute to the TDC Joint Transportation Board as many decisions appear to be made prior to the meetings. The association is to invite a representative of Stonehill Park to attend a future meeting. The Twinning Association reported that £550 had been raised at their recent quiz night and reminded everyone of the walking treasure hunt taking place on 18th September.

HANDEL IN BROADSTAIRS A performance of Handel’s Messiah in its entirety is a rare gem, and Thanet Festival Choir will offer every glorious moment of it, complete with professional soloists and chamber orchestra, as part of its 70th anniversary celebrations. Beloved of singer and audience, the work includes movements of great beauty and lyricism, some of which are now rarely heard in concert, among them sparkling arias, a contemplative duet and several typically rousing choruses, which more than hold their own against the perennial favourite, Hallelujah Chorus. Handel’s sacred oratorios seem to strike the perfect balance between virtuosic and pious, and Messiah, a veritable outpouring of faith by a deeply spiritual man, is rightly considered his finest. The reverent sweetness of I Know That My Redeemer Liveth contrasts with the harrowing mockery of He Trusted In God That He Would Deliver Him, and that with the stately assurances of the bass aria, The Trumpet Shall Sound, as just a selection of the King James Bible scriptures set to music in Handel’s masterpiece. A concert of this profound and exciting work is certainly one for the diary… The 100-strong Thanet Festival Choir boasts an ever-growing membership and is renowned for its exceptionally friendly and supportive character, and for producing truly thrilling performances under the baton of its Musical Director of 20 years, professional singer and vocal coach, Clifford Lister. Thanet Festival Choir presents a complete, uncut Handel’s Messiah on Saturday 12 November 2016 at 6pm in Holy Trinity Church, Broadstairs. Tickets cost £15 on the door and £13 in advance. For advance tickets please contact the Ticket Secretary on 01304 620 560 or visit www.thanetfestivalchoir.org
