Come along and show your support for YOUR show give us your thoughts and views maybe even join us on the committee we need some new younger blood

I was moaning last month about a lack of content but this month I've been struggling to get it all in, HOWEVER I'm not complaining as it's great to see the magazine so well supported. Plenty of pictures of the great event the twinning staged on 6 September - we Diana had loads of pictures given us and we thank everyone who allowed us to use them. You may if you look hard enough find me on one of them!! The Parish Council are attempting to engage residents who are either on their own or just looking for something to fill their time by proposing the opening of a Shed in the village, if enough interest is shown. Don't know about Sheds? - then Kevin take a look at - whilst this is mainly about men, the Town Shed in Broadstairs has gone for a male/female mix which appears to be working well so that will be the model that Minster hopes to adopt - see page 5 of this issue for further details. Finally, rumour has it our PCSO, Kiren Kallu, is leaving us to take up a civilian post in Canterbury, but I'm told we will be getting a replacement for her in the near future. We at MM wish her well and thank her for all she has done in the village, she will be missed. Well that’s about it, just room to ask my usual question -”Where’s Zac?”

The shed movement started in Australia in 1999. The idea : create a space and facilities to bring older people together through communal activities, generally DIY and carpentry, to in turn benefit the community. Sheds are places to meet, make friends, share and learn new skills and have access to health and well-being information. The shed would be a community led initiative pulling on fantastic support, knowledge and experiences from other Sheds and “Shedders” throughout the UK. Be you male or female, if you are interested in learning new skills or hobbies, or sharing your own skills and experience with others, please contact the Parish Office and leave your name, address and phone number. Depending on interest shown the Parish Council will then look to organise a public meeting to discuss this venture further and they will also look toward locating suitable premises. Tel: 01843 821 339 Email:

Our Next Event Last year the Playhouse put on a Hallowe’en Dance, which was a great success, thanks to good support from the Village and the excellent showmanship and musicianship of Jeff Barker and band. Jeff has agreed to perform for us again this year, and it promises to be as fun an evening as before. Hallowe’en themed fancy dress is optional, and you can bring your own food and drink. The venue is the Village Hall, the date, Saturday 31 October, Hallowe’en itself, at 7.30. Why not arrange a party now, get the fancy dress sorted early, and come along to enjoy Jeff’s excellent music and entertainment. Make a date in your diary not to miss this one! Tickets are £10 and available from Attwells or call 01843 821 785 This Year’s Pantomime Rehearsals are already under way for our traditional Christmas Pantomime Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, written and directed by Sally Reynolds, an experienced director and choreographer, directing our Panto for the first time. At Minster Playhouse we welcome keen new people whether to act or on the technical side, so why not join us? If you are interested, please contact the Playhouse through Niki Kelly on 07852 271 614. The Panto will run from Wednesday 2 to Saturday 5 December, evening performances at 7.30 and a morning and afternoon matinee additionally on the Saturday. Box Office: 07501 894 381 or email:

CARRIER BAGS Remember that from Monday 5 October it becomes law that larger retailers must charge a minimum of 5p for each single use carrier bag they supply. SO! - be prepared and remember to take your own bags with you when you go shopping. In Minster if you use the Salvation Army Community Shop you should be aware that the Salvation Army nationally are no longer supplying carrier bags so take your bags if you’re paying them a visit too.

MINSTER SHOW DRAW Karen Brazil would like to say a huge thank you to local businesses and villagers for their continuous support, donating fantastic prizes for the Minster Show Draw. This now provides a substantial contribution towards the running costs of the Show and is very much appreciated by all of the Committee.

I almost saw you It was your finger putting the finishing touches to the world’s edge of the downs today wasn’t it? Just smoothing off, satisfied, pleased with that perfect, bold brush-stroke; not another touch until man comes, on this great white horse. I almost saw your hand, as I turned aside didn’t I? A tear-prick away from nearly catching you at creation today; unaware you were, observing your own bright shadow. It was the sliver-glimpse of you slipping through the wildflower meadow beyond the field today wasn’t it? Not quite hidden, bending down to cornflower poppy and daisy, tracing their petals as a mother contours her child’s face. You nearly caught my eye as I turned didn’t you? Just a moth-wing away from nearly catching you at creation today. But did you know that I heard, well almost, the swish of the hem of your garment as you passed by that day?

MINSTER ARMBOUTS CAPPEL TWINNING ASSOCIATION THE PARADE OF GIANTS – 6 SEPTEMBER 2015 This unique event was a great success and one which was put on primarily for the village of Minster to show our gratitude for the support that the village has given us in the past. So, it’s a pat on the back to both the Twinning Association and the Village itself. The streets were lined with onlookers as the giants strolled majestically through the village, amazing all who saw them. The Parade was led by a group of Primary School children towing a Hind which the school had made, followed by our very own giant, Mildred, escorted by Minster Carnival Court, a fantastic Entourage of Bands, Majorettes, Morris Dancers and the like. Hundreds of pictures have been added to our Facebook page:, please take the time to look at them. Each group who participated in the Parade received a 'Medallion' and 'Certificate of Attendance' awarded by the Chair of Minster Parish Council, Bob Grove, supported by other dignitaries from the village. The Parade made its way slowly from the Holiday Inn down through the village to Parkminster where hundreds of people flooded in for an afternoon of entertainment, refreshments and stalls. There was a party atmosphere in the grounds, much like a garden party. The raffle as always was well supported and the results have been placed in Attwells for all to see. They came: 7 Giants from Armbouts Cappel, Bergues, Mardyck and Oudezeele joined 7 local beauties from Minster, Canterbury, Margate, Hawkinge, Ashford and Herne Bay. They saw: A village turnout that no one had anticipated. They conquered: The feedback was amazing, and it seemed the whole day was welcomed with open arms. It was an event that was intended as a 'one-off', but co-ordinator, John Quittenden has said "Never say Never". Our thanks go out to the many helpers who assisted with background duties, without whom we would have been unable to function so successfully, thank you everybody. Other dates for your diary: Friday 13 November – AGM at the Neighbourhood Centre – 7.30pm (access via side door) Saturday 14 November – Race Night at the Village Hall cost £15pp. This event is being supported by O’Sheas who are providing a 3 course meal. More details can be obtained from O’Sheas direct.

RiverOak wrote to the Select Committee on Transport, Smaller Airports: “RiverOak has been at pains to avoid unrealistic estimates. However, based on previous employment levels at Manston and on industry averages, we believe that a future scenario where Manston handles 150,000 tonnes of cargo annually, has five teardown lines in operation, one MRO operation, 750,000 passengers annually, and a growing private jet and flight training business can generate around 1,000 jobs.” ument/transport-committee/smaller-airports/written/13485.pdf Q: … where do you see Manston Airport in 10 years’ time? “1,300 direct jobs plus at least 1,000 indirect jobs" These are new, high quality jobs. Minster Matters MINSTER W.I.

Fresh from the Summer break, Minster WI members gathered in the Village Hall at 7.30 on Tuesday 8 September for the monthly meeting. President, Sarah Eaton-Brown, welcomed everyone and after she ran through the Summer events, highlighting successes at the July Minster Show when the Cooperative exhibit was awarded 1st Prize, the Float came 3rd and the Stall made £103! The Bat ‘n Trap evening was deemed a real success and may become an annual event. events include trips to Bruges Christmas Market; the monthly walk; the ballet in October at the Marlowe Theatre and the possibility of a trip to Windsor Castle. At the end of October, the Group Meeting will be held in St Mark’s Church Hall, Ramsgate and 14th November sees the Annual Dabble Day. So much to look forward to ……….. Ralph Hoult, speaker for the evening, entertained the meeting with fascinating photos celebrating 100 years of Ramsgate - to coincide with the WI’s Centenary. Everyone really enjoyed both the pictures and his witty commentary very much. After refreshments, Sarah gave details of two appeals; one for clothes in aid of Syrian refugees and the other for Christmas boxes to go to Oasis in Margate. She then wished everyone good night and closed another busy, sociable meeting of the Minster WI. Forthcoming Events: 13 October – 'Crafty' Meeting – 7.30 Village Hall – All welcome 28 October – Games Evening – 7.30 Committee Room, Village Hall

The 11th Memorial “Ride to Remember” Jake Philpott Sunday 30 August 2015 Well, if you can cast your mind back to the Saturday and Bank Holiday Monday you will know how fortunate we were, maybe even blessed, on the Sunday for our 11th annual bike ride which was completed this year without a drop of rain and mostly in glorious sunshine. Yet again “Thanks” go to all you lovely people who turned up with your bikes, some looking really keen, some not so, some with new upgraded bikes, others with the cobwebs still attached. After all for some of us this is the only time our bikes come out of the sheds. We are never disappointed at the number of people who turn up, not only family and friends who knew and loved Jake but all the people who never met him but appreciate how very special this day is, so to all this year's new faces, thank you. I have a special mention to our youngsters, Cobi Smith completing his second whole ride, Cass Smith who did Minnis Bay to Reculver and Josh Matheson who also completed the whole 20 [something] miles, well done you were brilliant. Also well done to big Al who retired on Friday and despite not being on a bike for years decided to celebrate by joining us [is he mad I hear you ask?] No, he’s just like all the people who turn out to make this day so worthwhile every year, they show Hayley, Dave, Levi and Ryder and all the family that they care too. Thanks must also go to Cynthia [Mum], Sue, Min, Barbara and Pat for making sure the food was waiting for us on our return to the British Legion, Alan for following with his truck, but most of all to every one of you who came along took on the challenge, enjoyed the day and made this once again a… RIDE TO REMEMBER See you all again next year xxx. (Picture on front page)

MINSTER ABBEY Mother Nikola and the community were delighted to welcome so many to the ‘Village Twinning Event at Parkminster.’ It was glorious weather and it was so good to see people really enjoying the afternoon together. We hope that other groups from the village will continue to use our facilities for special events. Please do drop in to the ‘Looking Ahead Tea Rooms’ at Parkminster, open now every Tuesday to Friday from 10:30 to 3 p.m.!

MINSTER POST OFFICE IS CHANGING As you may be aware our Post Office is to undergo a major refit, which Shabaz and Afsheen tell us is due to happen around January. It will mean some big changes to the premises as we know them today, the existing Post Office counter will come out and the shop will be extended into that area, the central display stand will also be removed thus opening up the floor space for customers. A single service point will be added to the existing retail counter solely for Post Office services. Opening hours will also be extended like so: Mon – Fri 08:00 to 18:00 and Sat 08:00 to 16:00, so longer hours daily and no closure at lunchtimes or Wednesday afternoons. This work is expected to take up to 2 weeks to complete and the Post Office will be closed for that period, a notice will be posted in the window of the shop approximately two weeks before work is due to begin. Post Office services will be available in Birchington at the Co-op 54/56 Station Road. Those with their own transport shouldn’t find this too much trouble but for those who rely on public transport there is no direct bus service to Birchington. We have looked at the Stagecoach timetables and it would appear that people will have 2 options to get into Birchington, but only one option to get back, both mean a fair while away from home. The options as we see them are: No11 from Minster Church at 1044 arriving Manston Church at 1054, then change to No38 leaving Manston Church at 1111 arriving in Birchington at 1128 – there is also another No11 leaving Minster an hour later at 1144 – No38 from Manston at 1211 arriving in Birchington at 1228. However we can see only one bus back which is the No38 from Birchington Station at 1328 arriving Manston Church at 1345 then No11 from Manston at 1402 arriving back in Minster at 1412, so the first option gives you two hours in Birchington and the second option just one hour. Remember if you only need a small number of postage stamps these are obtainable from both Attwells and Ben’s. Ben’s and the Co-op both have cashpoint machines and Cliffsend Post Office is open on a Thursday morning from 10am to 12noon, catch the 42/42a from the New Inn at either 1022 or 1137 and return at 1108 or 1223 from Cliffsend.

POOR PARKING More and more people are sending us their poor parking pictures. Two of those shown are at the same junction, Hill House Drive/Tothill St, where parking so close to the junction is making it impossible to see traffic coming up the hill. The third image is a superb piece of parallel parking - parallel to the white line that is not parallel to the kerb. This one is in the entrance to Norton Drive opposite Attwells shop. Where did they all learn to drive?? Absolutely unbelievable, as is the number of vehicles that we regularly see parked virtually up to the junction in Laundry Road, opposite McDonald's, making it extremely awkward for HGVs especially to negotiate the traffic island in the centre of the road.
