Minster Matters

MINSTER COMMUNITY LED PLAN This eagerly anticipated Plan has been produced and is enclosed within this issue of Minster Matters. Thanks to the MM team for distributing it. In April a questionnaire was delivered to every household and business in the Parish. The enclosed report is the result of the analysis of the questionnaires returned. The document was presented to Minster Parish Council at their September meeting and copies will be sent to Thanet District Council, Kent County Council and other Agencies so the views of residents will be represented when forming future strategic plans.

Your Friendly Village Magazine Issue Number 152: October 2013 ISSN 1755-9502 (Print) : ISSN 1755-9510 (Online) : ISSN 1758-4175 (CD-ROM)

At the back of the report there is an ‘Action Plan’ and the issues raised will be considered by Minster Parish Council at future meetings. Some of the matters raised by residents are already being considered by the Parish Council and in some cases are already being acted upon. There were so many extra comments noted during the analysis of the questionnaires that it was not possible to include them all within the document but these will be called upon by the Parish Council when specific items are considered. Finally the Steering Group, under the Chairmanship of John Shervington, has worked hard to produce this document but we all realise that nothing would have been achieved without the generous support of the residents. On behalf of the Community Led Plan Team a big thank you residents of Minster. Roy Wade Project Coordinator

EDITORIAL E - Team Well I guess Summer is over now and the nights are drawing in. I see we even have adverts for Christmas Bazaars, pubs with Christmas menus and the Village Late Night Shopping, all too soon we’ll find Easter Eggs on the Supermarket shelves. I’m sure time never went this quickly when I was Ray working full time, all that ever went quickly then were weekends and holidays! I digress, back to the business at hand, I’ve been asked to make you all aware that Archies Fish Shop and Restaurant is still open for business as usual, even though the building sustained some severe damage recently. Access to the shop is via the restaurant door (MIND THE STEP!!) and the owners and Amy staff would be pleased to see you. There’s no school page this month as we’ve cut the School Journalist Club back to once a fortnight and this week was the first one since the Summer holidays. We hope to have the youngsters write more interesting articles than we’ve previously printed so watch this space! Brenda You will read elsewhere in this issue about a new section we hope to start in the magazine giving you the opportunity to have your say on village matters and we’re starting off this month by asking you about the new waste and recycling service that some of us already have and the rest of us will get in November. Please note though we will not publish anything that arrives in our Diane mailbox without a name and address attached. In fact that goes for anything we receive for publication; if it doesn’t have a name and address it will be ignored. How many on the new recycling scheme have noticed the mistake on the collection calendar supplied with your new bins? From March 2014 they are Nora all marked incorrectly!! Even TDC hadn’t noticed until I told them !! They said, however, at least they’ve now got time to reissue them before they cause a problem. Well space is very limited this month just enough left to say check out Attwells offer to the housebound on page 19, Finally, where’s Zac ?

NEW FUND RAISING PROJECT Having achieved our target to purchase an additional 24 Hour Blood Pressure Monitor for the surgery, we will be launching our “New Project” at the “Flu Days”, so please come along to see our “Presentations”. THE LATE MR BRIAN ATKINSON On behalf of the Practice Partners and Patient Liaison Group, we would like to formally thank the Family and Friends of Brian Atkinson for their kindness and generosity, which has made it possible to purchase seven additional “Personal Blood Pressure Monitors” and associated accessories. This equipment means that GPs will have greater flexibility when allocating them to patients, thus allowing many more to have this facility for use in their own home. The equipment will be displayed and the family will present them to Dr Crosfield during the ‘Flu Days in October. SURGERY TRAINING DAYS The Surgery will be closed from Midday onwards, on the following days: Wednesday 9th October and Thursday 14th November Should you need to see a Doctor during these times, please call “Doctors on Call” via the normal surgery number - 821333. You can also directly access the new “NHS 111 Service”, where you can get confidential help and advice for you and your family. This is for less urgent cases, that are not life threatening, rather than calling” 999”. Further information can be found on their web site at www.nhs.uk/111 YOU STILL WON’T BELIEVE IT! Last month 78 Patients DID NOT ATTEND their DOCTOR’S appointment (A very slight decrease on last month - Thank You), 27 Patients DID NOT ATTEND their NURSE’S appointment (A BIG DECREASE THANK YOU VERY MUCH !). BUT THAT’S STILL 105 MISSED APPOINTMENTS, THAT’S STILL 105 WASTED APPOINTMENTS AND THAT MEANS THERE WERE 105 OTHER PATIENTS THAT COULD HAVE BEEN SEEN ! One has to ask! Why make an appointment and not bother to turn up? In comparison to other NHS services, a record of such appointments are now being compiled, and any action necessary to help reduce this problem will be considered! SO PLEASE STOP WASTING TIME AND MONEY, DON’T NEED IT, CANCEL IT ! PATIENT GROUP MEETING If you have any issues you would like to raise at our next meeting or require further information on any of the above, then please contact : Ken Self on 821200 or Jeanne Lawrence on 821049

Jack’s Borneo Fundraising Update On Saturday 17th August, with the very kind help of Attwells, I did a book sale to help me raise some more funds for my trip to Borneo next year. Friends and family kindly donated books for me to sell and as a result I raised £84! Thank you so much to everyone who donated some money in return for books, and thank you also to those who purely donated. As always I am touched by

people’s generosity. I am nearly half way to raising the money needed for me to go to Borneo and as it draws nearer I am really excited about this trip and helping to improve the lives of people and wildlife out in Borneo. I will be holding another book sale at the Thanet Farmers’ Market launch which will be held at the Marlowe Academy on Saturday 15th September. I am also still very willing to do jobs for people to help me raise the money needed, so please speak to Karen in Attwells if you need my contact details. Thank you for reading this. Jack.

FREE INFORMATION SERVICE AVAILABLE FOR ALL A FREE service is now available for all Kent residents to help them find which health and social care services are available for them. The service is part of Healthwatch Kent, a new independent consumer champion for people who use Kent’s many health and social care services. Healthwatch’s Information and Signposting dedicated service is available to everyone and will help people to find the services that they require within the complex NHS system in Kent. You can call them anytime on Freephone 0808 801 0102, alternatively email your enquiry to:info@healthwatchkent.co.uk . Talking about the service, Healthwatch’s Charlie Fox said, “We are getting calls and providing assistance to people from all over the county. For example, one customer had been struggling to find a local dentist with a winch to lift him from his wheel chair. Our team tracked one down for him and provided all the information he needed to make an appointment. We know how complicated it can be to find your way around the health and social care system. Our team of trained staff can take the worry away and find the answers for you. I have no doubt that once people are more aware of our service then we can be of assistance to hundreds of people every week.” Healthwatch Kent also wants to hear about peoples’ views and their experiences of local health and social care services. It will take your voice to the people who commission services in Kent and help to shape the future of health and social care services. To get involved visit our website at www.healthwatchkent.co.uk. October 2013

I fear the weather is becoming more Autumnal, but our spirits are raised with the prospect of more fund raising for the Twinning Association in the near future. Firstly, may I just remind everyone that the holiday raffle prize from the Foxhunter Caravan Park, which was drawn on the Fun Day in June, has now been redeemed by the winner Mr. Brian Yost from Gloucestershire. He experienced mixed weather during his visit last week, but cannot praise the Foxhunter enough for the excellent welcome he was given and the standard of the luxury caravan in which he spent his week. His gratitude is extended to the Twinning Association for giving him the chance of an extra holiday this year and he has requested more tickets for any future events! This leads me on nicely to explain that our next planned raffle will be drawn on the Quiz Night on Saturday 5 October, at the Royal British Legion. If you wish to book your table of 6-8 people, please ring Heather on 01843 826 406. A buffet will be provided. The cost is £5 a head and a good evening, kicking off at 7.30pm sharp, is promised. Raffle tickets are available in advance from: Carol on 07745 683 466, Alex on 01843 821 429 or John at Minster Garage. They each have a list of prizes sponsored by various outlets. Prizes include: ● A two night stay for 2 adults and 2 children at a Holiday Inn in Tamworth, Staffordshire. ● A Ferry Sailing to France. ● A Cut and Blow Dry at a Canterbury Salon plus many more prizes. Plans are already underway for the 16th Anniversary of the Association which has been scheduled for Sunday 4 May 2014 here in our village. Any suggestions for activities to entertain the French Group, will be gratefully received. More details will follow. For now, please call Heather and book your table for the QUIZ NIGHT. Please note that the AGM for the Twinning Association is Friday 22 November, 7.30pm at the Neighbourhood Centre so please support your village and turn up to offer any thoughts you may have on raising our profile and the sort of activities you would like to see at future events. As a community, you are all members of the Association and we would benefit from new inputs, young and old alike. Carol

1 High Street, Minster, Thanet CT12 4BU

Tel: 01843 822516/7

Dear Villagers, The response to the cookbook has been very slow and only 9 people have given me recipes. I feel that if a village cookbook is to be produced it must be from the people who live here, therefore I am going to postpone the publication of the book until next year, in the hope that we can gain more interest. If you feel that you do, indeed, have a recipe please email it to me at sjezzard@gmail.com and I will save it for future reference. If you do not have access to a computer you may leave your recipes at the Old Schools marked : S. Jezzard, village recipes We will now try to launch the book next Easter, with a taster session at the Easter Market. All proceeds will go towards saving the Saxon Tower of St. Mary’s Church. Thank you to those of you that have submitted recipes. Yours sincerely Sue Jezzard

Minster Bowls Club This is the last report as the outdoor bowls season comes to an end. After all the hard work of getting to a final with all the nice sunny weather over the past few weeks, what a shame that on the first day of final’s weekend we had persistent precipitation, making bowling very uncomfortable. The second day was an improvement, but the chilly wind spoilt what could have been a perfect day for the players, and those spectators sitting around the green. Conditions underfoot made the surface very slippery – well done for staying upright! Congratulations go to all the runners-up of each final for giving the winners a good game. A special pat on the back to those in their first season who very nearly got their names on the Honours Board, but instead will have a medal to keep. As this season ends, the short mat season begins. Starting on the 24th September the mats will be down from Tuesdays to Sundays every week until 26th April. One exception will be Friday 27th when the end of season ball takes place. We give free taster sessions for anyone wanting to try an activity through the cold winter months. Already four people have booked up for coaching so WHY NOT YOU? Just turn up or ‘phone, and ask if you can join in. We have six friendly games booked up between now and December, pairs games every Wednesday night, besides League games for those who seek the challenge of playing other clubs in our region. Between November and April you will see quite a bit of activity with improvements to the area around the pavilion as well as expansion of the facilities inside. Don’t be put off, BOWLING will carry on. So, come on and have a look at what we can provide for your entertainment, exercise and enjoyment. Contact numbers are 589615 and 293736. Glynne Hibbert Bereavement Dorothy Fagg 1921 – 2013 Sadly Dorothy has peacefully passed away aged 92 years. Dorothy was a resident of Minster for close on 70 years. She came to the village as a land army girl during the Second World War working at Willett’s Farm in Monkton. It was during that time that she met her husband Joe and they settled into married life never leaving the village. Joe and Trevor would like to say a big thank you to all the staff at Shottendane Nursing Home for the love and care given to Dorothy over the last six months Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this sad time.

October 2013 MEMORIES I have two favourite places on earth, Malta and Minster-in-Thanet. Each one is from opposite ends of my life but each one has a connection with my father. He served briefly in Malta with the RAF during the Second World War between the North African campaign and the invasion of Sicily. He didn't see much of the Island apart from the aerodrome at Safi and the odd visit to Valletta, but it did seem to leave an impression on him. It was a long held ambition of mine to visit the Island, and so when four years ago my wife suggested we take a holiday there I immediately said yes - let's go for it. When we told people the first time we were going, the reactions were very varied. The impression was you either love it or hate it. We absolutely loved it and have been there now four years in succession. My association with Minster is longer than that with Malta. My father's family lived in Minster for many years. His mother Hilda King, nee Ayers (my grandmother) who was born in Wingham, was married at St Mary's Church on 1st January 1920. She and my grandfather moved to Essex where he was originally from. They had met while he was serving with the RNAS at Manston. By the time I started visiting Minister for our annual holidays in the early 1950's at about age four, there were three members of the family living in Durlock – 8 Sunnyside, Durlock, Minster, Thanet, Kent. That's how my gran used to address the envelopes. Two of them (brother and sister) were at No 8 - Aunt "Lil" - Nellie Ayers and Uncle "Sun" - Harold Ayers. A little further up the road was Aunt "May" - Frances Studham (nee Ayers). Living in Birchington was Aunt "Win" - Winifred Taylor (nee Ayers).

Once a year for many years we would descend on Durlock and share bedrooms so that we could spend a holiday with the relatives. Each year in our borrowed car we would set off from Southend about 8 o'clock and head for the Tilbury Ferry - no Dartford Crossing in those days - and hope that the queue was not too long. Sometimes we would queue for a couple of hours just inching forward as cars were loaded on to the ferry from the landing-stage. Once off the ferry, turn left out of Gravesend and head towards the A2 - no motorways either. Now we are on holiday!. Off we go through Rochester, Chatham, Gillingham, Sittingbourne, Faversham, round the coast road past Herne Bay and then wriggle our way to Minster. If we arrived by 4 o'clock we had done well. I revisited Minster five years ago, the first time since the early 1970's, using the modern roads and did the journey in about two and a half hours including dropping the dog off at the kennels much better. Many childhood memories came back. The farm opposite the house that had ducks and cows is still there but without the animals. The White Horse public house where we spent our evenings in the children's room, no longer a public house but still recognisable, even to the bricked up doors to the outside toilets. The railway station and the level crossing where I used to watch the trains. I have a few photographs from those halcyon days which help keep the memories alive of the village and the visits to the lovely towns of Kent. Must do it again soon before age overtakes me. MINSTER SCHOOL LIBRARY A big THANK YOU to the lady who donated an amazing collection of books to Minster CE Primary School on Wednesday 18th September. You did not leave your name or contact details so we were unable to write to you personally to say thank you. We really appreciate your kindness and the children will love them. Grateful thanks from Minster School Library. The 9th Annual Bike Ride in Memory of Jake Philpott Here we were again, another year on, to do our bike ride to remember Jake. Every year we are so glad to see all the familiar faces and always some new ones, who join us at the British Legion to do this memorial bike ride. This year again we were not disappointed; about forty people turned up, and considering the awful weather we had had on the Saturday we were amazed, but the sun was shining so we set off. For the first time ever we got to Minnis Bay and it was a back wind, and oh how everyone felt the difference! We got to Reculver, had a drink in the King Ethelbert and with no moans of, “God, that was hard work along the sea wall”, we set off again to the Gate Inn. Again the weather was wonderful and after more refreshments and pub grub off we went to the Grove Ferry, the Rising Sun and the Dog and Duck, where we all knew we were nearly there. Another year of fun, laughter, good company, great weather and, most of all, friends and family together for a great day out. The last leg took us to Monkton and the White Stag and then on to the British Legion for Doreen’s curry and chips, and Cynth and Sue with lasagne and French stick. The day could not have ended better. Although Min and Malc were on hand for a lift once more it was not needed and everyone got back safe and sound. A massive thank you to all who took part and made this day a very special one for Hayley, Dave and Levi. See you all again next year. XXX

The President’s welcome and the rendition of Jerusalem opened September’s meeting on the second Tuesday of the month at 7.30 in the Village Hall. Marion Rose then thanked everyone who helped at the Minster Show with the very impressive co-operative exhibit, the excellent (but not prize winning) Float and the “fruity & tarty” stall (which was a sell-out and raised £121.21). She then confirmed that the Link visit to Quex with 9 members of North Tonbridge WI will be on Thursday 26th September and that October’s meeting is “Going Pink” in order to raise funds for the QEQM mammography appeal. Final details of the Dabble Day in November were given with participants being urged to indicate first choice. Marion pointed out that, along with the minutes of July’s meeting, the Treasurer’s report can be seen on the notice board. Secretary, Liz Shervington, read current correspondence including details of a discount to WI members at C & H Fabrics, the free Denman College day and the London at Christmas trip. Marion Bullard then introduced the speaker for the evening. Martin Gurdon began by introducing himself as a “professional car bore” but the hilarious account of his life in motoring journalism was anything but boring. Following refreshments, various items were discussed including speakers’ audition day on the 1st October; cushions for Archie’s Fish & Chip shop; and the Annual meeting in November with election of new committee members etc. After the raffle, when Marion thanked Maria and Margaret for running the raffle over the past year, she rounded off the evening with a witty story. Minster Matters

October 2013

I am researching the history of the defence of Thanet in the Second World War. If any readers of Minster Matters have any personnel reminiscences could they please contact me. This could be details of Home Guard, ARP, Civil Defence Service, WVS, or something that you observed as a child or working in one of the 'Reserved Occupations'. I would also be interested in recollections handed down to you from older relatives. I have assembled a large number of accounts from the various towns and villages around the island, but so far, the Minster area has not produced much in the way of reminiscences. Hopefully this will be remedied with the aid of Minster Matters. Contact details: Ron Stilwell 01843 825 545 stilwellrv@yahoo.co.uk

Minster Matters Bell Quiz for the Bells

A new record was set at the Bell Inn on the evening of Friday 23rd August when the new landlords, Ken and Fiona, held a quiz night on behalf of the Bell Restoration Fund for St Mary’s Church. The response was amazing, with fourteen tables of six booked, and a further seven tables having to be turned away because there was simply not enough room to accommodate them! (but that was not the record!) It was a very jolly evening with questions set as usual by Chris Sings, to a well varied standard so that there was something for everyone. Ken and Shaun supplied everyone with food at the interval, and Fiona kept score. At the end of the evening, the pub had raised a grand total of £542.50 for the Bell Restoration Fund, a record for the pub, and a very useful addition to the Fund. The band of ringers from St Mary’s tower were well represented with two tables, and the ringing tutor, Tony Goodman, who has already done much to improve the

CROP - Citizens' Rights for Older People - needs volunteers with experience of life and time to spare. CROP is an independent advocacy service set up specifically to help and support older people by visiting clients in their own home to help with matters such as applying for benefits, filling in forms, helping sort out financial problems, letter-writing, making phone calls and much more. Many of our clients struggle with dayto-day bureaucracy and red tape, which leaves them frustrated, overwhelmed and losing confidence. As a CROP Advocate you can make a difference by engaging with older people who ask for our help, taking away feelings of being powerless, isolated and confused by the difficulties they face. Although CROP offers help

October 2013 bells, thanked Ken, Fiona, and Chris for their magnificent effort, and excellent result. Among the bell-ringers of Kent the bells at St Mary’s are well-known as “difficult” bells, because their maintenance had been neglected for many years before Tony started to work on them, and they still need extensive work to bring them to a good ringing condition. The necessary work has been costed at £45,000!! It would be such a shame to see these bells fall further into disrepair – the oldest of the five in the tower

was cast in about 1580, and has been ringing in the village since that time. If you would like to visit the tower and see the bells, or perhaps to try the ancient skill of bellringing for yourself, call the Tower Captain, Sheila Palmer, on 822348. Oh, and who won the quiz? The ‘Early Drinkers’, by a whole half a point! (Ed: Are you sure that shouldn’t say half a pint!!)

on a wide range of needs, Advocates do not need to be skilled in everything! There are no wages but there's an abundance of satisfaction. You gain confidence not just with CROP clients but with life in general, and you'll meet people from all walks of life. We provide full training, pay mileage at 40p per mile and meet all other out-of-pocket expenses. In 2012 CROP gained the Queens Award for Voluntary Service in recognition of the good work the charity provides. To learn more about CROP, or to volunteer and join our team of Advocates, call us on 01622 851200 or email lenham@cropkent.org.uk CROP is a Company Limited by Guarantee and a Registered Charity (reg. no. 1087538), and is supported by Kent County Council.
