EDITORIAL First and foremost I must say a huge thank you to Jack for answering our plea for an Android phone. A brand new Samsung handset was more than we could have wished for, far superior to the very beaten up secondhand Orange Rio we had originally and which we couldn't use for much needed emails. Rest assured it is already being put to very good use. Diana Secondly but no less importantly I must also say a huge thank you to Olive who kindly left me a large piece of Bread Pudding at the library, it was absolutely delicious. I should also mention that a new business is about to open its doors in the village. Quirky's, run by John and Tania, is moving into 79 High Street and they'll be Kevin selling 'upcycled' and vintage items such as china, clothes, furniture etc. Let's hope they make a go of it as it will mean one less unoccupied shop in the village and as it's something that bit different it may attract outsiders to visit, which in turn could be of benefit to other businesses in the area. We at MM wish them every success especially as they've already taken out an advert with us. Great news from the Parish Council re their Sport England funding, I believe it could mean the new facilities may be built before the end of the year, weather permitting. Well I've no space to write much more so I'll quit whilst I'm ahead. Just room enough to ask my usual question -”Where’s Zac?”

MINSTER W.I. Our October meeting was a crafty one, we made apples or pumpkins from old paperback books.......simple but effective! There was a display of photos from our celebration of the WI centenary which was a delicious afternoon tea at St Augustine's. Members had helped make a banner celebrating the event, there was delicious food, some fizz, a beautiful cake made and decorated by two of our members and of course, good company (See pictures on facing page). We have had a bench made as well, to celebrate the event, that we hope to put somewhere in the village. Future Events: Our Meeting on 10th November will be our Annual Meeting The Meeting on 8th December will be our Christmas Party Other future events include our craft 'Dabble Day' which is open to all members

Minster Parish Council awarded £66,220 of funding from Sport England Minster Parish Council is among 148 local sports projects to secure a share of £9 million of National Lottery funding from Sport England’s Inspired Facilities fund.

that can be unattractive, expensive to run and difficult to maintain, and to convert existing non-sporting buildings into venues that are suitable for grassroots sport.

Since 2011, Inspired Facilities has been helping breathe new life into tired community sports facilities and converting existing buildings into venues suitable for grassroots sport. The funding will also allow modern facilities to encourage, particularly the young, to take up or to improve their sporting ability and aspirations.

Applying for funding has never been easier. Based on feedback from previous applicants, the Inspired Facilities Fund is now an open programme which means projects can submit applications as soon as they are ready rather than being restricted by a specific deadline. To find out more and bid, visit www.sportengland.org/inspiredfacilities.

Minster Parish Council will receive £66,220 of National Lottery funding to go towards the building of a multi-use games area to add to the existing facilities which include a play area, outdoor gym equipment and outdoor table tennis table on land recently transferred to the Parish Council.

For more details about this particular project, please contact Kyla Lamb, Clerk to the Parish Council on 018243 821 339 or clerk@minsterparishcouncil.org.uk

Sport England Property Director, Charles Johnston, said: “The Inspired Facilities Fund has had a huge impact on grassroots sport across the country. Since 2011, we’ve invested £102 million into more than 1,920 projects to improve and refurbish sports clubs and transform non-sporting venues into vibrant community sports clubs. It’s great to see Minster Parish Council join the long list of successful clubs to benefit from this fund.” Minster Parish Council Chairman, Cllr. Bob Grove, said: “We are delighted to have secured this amazing investment, which means we can provide free sports facilities for all ages to use. Additional facilities will be available for Minster School and also local netball and tennis groups where it has been generally recognised there has been a shortage of venues. It will also provide for football, basketball, netball and tennis. The Parish Council recognise the need to encourage exercise to tackle society’s problems with health, obesity, general fitness and well-being and these are important factors that the Government has urged local communities to address. The Parish Council is committed to providing these facilities to achieve this goal and also to give the young an avenue to engage in meaningful activities.” Minster`s MP, Sir Roger Gale, has said: “I am absolutely delighted that Sport England has made this award to enable the provision of a multi-sports facility for the village. I am certain that this will make a significant contribution to the health and well-being of the whole community and of the young people of the village in particular. I really look forward to seeing this project now brought to completion as soon as possible.” Many more communities are set to benefit from the hugely popular fund with the latest round of the Inspired Facilities now open. Community and voluntary organisations, councils and schools can bid for a share of £5 million to help upgrade facilities

At least 70 per cent of the funding will go to community and voluntary organisations, through grants of between £20,000 and £75,000. The remaining funding will be open to a wider group of organisations, including councils and schools, with grants of up to £150,000 available. To make sure the technical elements of the application process do not put off groups with good projects, Sport England has created a catalogue of typical facilities developments and costs, based on what sports clubs have told us they need. Sport England is focused on helping people and communities across the country create a sporting habit for life. We will invest over £1 billion of National Lottery and Exchequer funding between 2012 and 2017 in organisations and projects that will: Help more people have a sporting habit for life Create more opportunities for young people to play sport Nurture and develop talent Provide the right facilities in the right places Support local authorities and unlock local funding Ensure real opportunities for communities. The National Lottery has been changing lives for 18 years. Every week National Lottery players raise over £30 million to help change people's lives across the UK. MINSTER ARMBOUTS CAPPEL TWINNING ASSOCIATION A short report this month. I hear that sigh of relief! Our Quiz Night on Saturday 19 September was a great success with 128 guests attending, the most we have seen for some time. The winning team were visitors from nearby Sturry and they walked off with wine to celebrate their success. Thanks goes to the Royal British Legion and staff for the use of their hall and for making a wonderful buffet as always, to Quizmaster Ian, and to everyone for entering into the fun of the evening. We are organising our next quiz for March 2016, so get keyed up on your knowledge. Our AGM is to be held at the Neighbourhood Centre at 1930hrs on Friday 13 November and everyone is welcome. We would like as many as possible to attend. As well as the Election of the Officers and Committee, we are actively looking for volunteer helpers for our future events. Saturday 14 November is to be our Race Night in the Village Hall. O’Sheas Bistro is supporting this event and will be putting on a 3 course meal at £15 a head, with choices for each course. In order for them to cater accurately, and for you to choose your meal, all queries need to go through them directly on 01843 823 091 or 07731 662 864, so get a table together and call them now to secure your place. We look forward to seeing you on both occasions.

MINSTER SHOW AGM REPORT The Show AGM held at 8pm on Friday 16 October at the Neighbourhood Centre was attended by seven members of the Committee, Vice President Sid Griffiths and two members of the public. Sadly the Chair, Dominique Vaughan was unable to attend due to recent hospitalisation and Vice Chair Karen Brazil was absent due to a flight delay back from the USA. Danny Day took the Chair and after receiving additional apologies for Alison Ainsley and Lindsay Grossmith, business was brisk as there were no minutes available from the previous AGM, due to the Minutes Secretary also being away. With both the Treasurer's and the Chair's report given by Treasurer Caroline Fleming and the committee accepting them as a true record, matters moved on to the election of committee and officers. All standing members were re-elected including those who were absent plus the two members of public were also accepted onto the committee. The 5 year review of the Constitution was undertaken and it was agreed that no changes needed to be made. With no further business to discuss and nothing raised in AOB Acting Chair Danny Day closed the meeting at 8.40pm.

The Benefice of the Wantsum Group is pleased to repeat our support for Tools with a Mission (TWAM) again this year. In Africa and other areas around the world there are many schools that have little or no reading or writing material. Sometimes the only person with a book or writing material is the teacher. TWAM works with schools to provide suitable textbooks and with our help would like to provide individual ‘Scholar Packs’ for each child to help with their learning. How does it work? Plastic document wallets are supplied by TWAM ~ these are available in advance from the Church ~ and we are asked to fill them with the following new items and bring them along to the Gift Service on Sunday 6 December: ● ● ● ● ● ●

A4 Writing Pad Pack of Pencils and Biro Pens Pack of Colouring Pencils, not felt tip Geometry Set. i.e. ruler, protractor and square Rubber and Pencil Sharpener Small Calculator

If, instead of filling a wallet you prefer to make a financial contribution to this initiative, special envelopes will be available If you would like to order a pre-filled scholar pack you can order one from Minster Church or please speak to your Churchwardens or Rev Richard Braddy (01843 821 250) or Sally Willins (01843 822 428)

FRANK FINCH Jean, Brian, Paul and Julie would like to thank everyone who attended Frank’s funeral on Friday 9 October and thank you also for the flowers and donations to The Pilgrims Hospice. They were touched by all the flowers, cards and messages of sympathy following Frank’s death on Wednesday 23 September and they particularly thank Jonathan Cole and Paul Willins for their handling of his funeral. Thank you to all Frank’s neighbours and friends for their support over the years.

(You may have heard this on the news this month) A hi-tech new virus targeting online banking users has stolen £20 million in the UK alone, according to the National Crime Agency. It was developed by a ‘technically skilled’ gang of international criminals, and used to gain access to banking details. It was spread via email, often disguised as Microsoft Office documents – and remains on users’ computers after infection. A spokesperson from the National Crime Agency says, "This is a particularly virulent form of malware and we have been working with our international law enforcement partners, as well as key partners from industry, to mitigate the damage it causes." Worried? Here's what to do 1) Check your bank statements to look for unusual transactions. The malware was controlled by a group of criminals, some of whom have already been arrested. The ‘botnet’ they used to control home PCs has been shut down. This means that any thefts are likely to slow down, at least for now. 2) The group – ‘Evil Corp’ – targeted businesses over home users. The virus spread via infected emails, with attachments which resembled Microsoft Office documents. If you received anything suspicious, check your computer equipment. 3) The virus should be picked up by up-to-date antivirus software. Run a check on your PC. If you find signs of infection, check with your bank.

Minster–in–Thanet Parish Boundary Minster is the largest parish on the Isle of Thanet covering well over 4,500 acres, and includes the hamlets of Way, Thorne, Sevenscore, and Ebbsfleet. The history of the parish and how the boundary has arrived at what we see today is too long to detail here, it is well documented elsewhere. Basically the parish has decreased in size since legend tells us that it was set about 670 A.D., when a large area of land was given to Princess Ermenburga, known also as Domneva, by King Egbert as the Weregild, a payment under Saxon law, to recompense her for the murder of her two brothers. The land area was to be set by as much land as her pet hind could cover in one continuous run (hence the hind being adopted as our village symbol) Today as you can see the map shows that our parish covers a very large area, and it has an irregular outline, this would have been due to old field boundaries and trackways being used to set the boundary line. What is not realised is that the present day boundary used as the election map, includes most of Manston Airport, including the Spitfire Museum, the Manston Museum, and the MOD Fire Training School. To the East St. Augustine's Cross, the new Cottington Road bridge, to the South as far as the old power station boundary and the River Stour, and to the West up to and including Sheriffs Court Lane.
