EDITORIAL Kelvin’s reply, to my question last month, was that we are doing good, so I’m hopeful that we can continue in that same vein. Elsewhere in this issue you will find a few facts about the forthcoming Flower Show, but I’d like to make special notice of Ray the fact that the committee are intending to resurrect the Grand (Minster Window Company) Draw this year, and tickets will be on sale prior to the event. On Property Maintenance the day you will be able to purchase tickets at the MM gazebo Building Work outside the entrance to the main marquee, so don’t forget to pop Plastering * Rendering in and see us and at the same time support this venture. Amy uPVC Windows & Doors I am glad to see the Parish Council took on board the KVOY Competition and that a small number of councillors are getting uPVC Fascia, Soffits & Guttering involved with putting together our application. They may well Repairs to existing double glazing need your help so please don’t be shy if approached, we can’t win Misted up sealed units replaced Brenda without you. Garage Doors * Decking It was great to go to church in February and feel so warm, what a difference £70,000 and an awful lot of work makes. Most people I saw even had to remove their coats and jumpers the Call on temperature was so barmy. Well done to everyone involved and Eve all those who have raised monies for the project. The only problem is that ‘those who do’ are trying to cajole Jenny and me into opening our garden this year, but we haven’t committed ourselves as yet. Don’t forget it’s Mothering Sunday on 22nd of this month,(I daren’t forget as it’s also our 40th wedding anniversary - and they Diane said it wouldn’t last!!) Also please remember the clocks go FORWARD on Sunday 29th, so roll on the lighter evenings. We had a great response to our competitions last month and I thank you for that, somehow it makes it all worthwhile. We gave away some really good prizes for which I thank those who so Nora PIZZA-PASTA kindly donated, without your generosity there wouldn’t have been (01843) 823091 No77 High St, Minster anything to compete for. We’ve fallen behind with one of our planned projects, namely Restaurant and Takeaway large print issues, as it has proved near impossible to do this in the Friday & Saturday Heather space I have available at home, so we are trying to organise a larger from 5.30pm space in the village where we can get this off the ground, keep watching this space and we’ll let you know if we have any luck. Finally, if you’re into a bit of limbo dancing, pop along to the Carpet gents toilet at the bottom of the high street and try out your skills. Sue Specialists I certainly think what the Parish Council and Police have done will help to deter those we wish to see desist from using them for unintended Carpets 39, Station Road, Birchpurposes. March 2009 Local Bobby, PC Darren Reed I would like to thank all the residents of the village for making me feel welcome and supporting me over the last couple of months since starting this role. I am thoroughly enjoying myself and finding the job, satisfying, challenging and thoroughly enjoyable. I would especially like to thank a few people who have assisted me during several incidents that have occurred recently. In January offenders broke into 2 vehicles at the railway station, due to the great work of a local resident (thanks ed), and KCC warden Steve Taylor, 2 arrests were made, (not locals), which subsequently led to them admitting to the breaks and further convictions. Earlier this month, 5 youths came into the village causing a considerable amount of problems for local residents and businesses. Again with help from local residents, and Steve Taylor, the youths were located and arrested. They have all been bailed to keep away from the village pending a decision to prosecute. After the ongoing problems at the local toilets, with anti social behaviour, and a small amount of criminal damage, in consultation with Roy Wade, Asst. Parish Clerk, it was agreed to improve the standards in the toilets. Bruno Woods and Steve Parker have been working hard to make alterations to the toilets and sprucing up with a lick of paint, thanks lads! And finally, the off duty Officer who required help at the top of the hill one evening in mid February, wishes to add a special thank you to all those who assisted him.

March 2009 THE HEAT IS ON !!!!!!!!.........at St Mary’s A celebration was held on Friday evening 20th February at St. Mary’s to mark the completion of the first effective heating system ever to have been installed in the building. Works were completed over a period of 3yrs to allow for funds to be raised. Bob Coles gave thanks to everyone involved in fund raising, generous gifts and untold manhours. Only one grant was made available as most granting bodies will not commit monies to heating systems. This single grant came from the Kent International Airport Community Fund. The total cost of the installation was in the region of £70,000 which included 8 tonnes of radiators, 3 tonnes of pipework, 3 boilers and a very large pump. This isn’t however the end of work in the church but just another phase that has been completed. The picture below shows Lucas Bullard of CPS Plumbing and Heating cutting the ceremonial cake watched over by his team of employees in the form of (right to left); Steve, Russ, Mark, Russell and Phil

Minster- in- Thanet WI. Our February speaker, Patsy Baker, gave an extremely interesting and entertaining talk on the History of Wigs, ranging from Egyptian times to the present day. We will surely remember the recipe for black hair dye as used by the Romans: leeches steeped in vinegar in a lead-lined vessel until fermented! (A potential side-effect was blackened teeth.) February also saw (and heard!) us at a local public house for our Birthday Dinner. Huge portions served put paid to any 'after Christmas' diets, and a most enjoyable evening ended with a raffle. So much goes on at the monthly meetings with tables and boards for this and that, notices, announcements of coming events, and other business matters, that it can become rather confusing for new members as to 'what's what and where', and so Information Sheets have been introduced for them (and longer term members too), explaining our set-up, the various monthly activities, and other events such as the Wine and Wisdom evening.

Guest Rooms from £59 per room per night Self Catering from £190 per week

Following on from the popularity of board games played at the 'Coffee and Chat' morning, it was requested that we hold games evenings regularly, and the first has been scheduled in February (after press date). From the number of people who expressed an interest in attending, it should be a success. Our next branch meeting will be at 7.30 pm on 10th March in the Village Hall, when Clive Aslet will give a talk on Historic Buildings. Visitors and new members are always welcome.

STOP NUISANCE CALLS & UNSOLICITED MAIL To help stop silent (nuisance) calls register your home telephone number here for free (businesses have to pay) http://tinyurl.com/silentcallgard or ring 0870 444 3969 the only drawback being that you must re-register annually to continue the service.(We suggest for the non-technical amongst us that you add a note to your birthday card list to remind you of when it needs doing again !!) To register for the Telephone Preference Service (TPS) which greatly reduces the number of unsolicited calls you will receive go to http://tinyurl.com/teleprefs. Here you can not only register for the TPS but also for the Mail Preference Service (MPS) to stop the majority of junk mail you receive, the Baby MPS to stop junk mail after a recent birth and finally the FPS to stop the majority of unwanted faxes. Useful telephone numbers: To register for TPS call 0845 070 0707, for MPS call 0845 703 4599, for Baby MPS call 020 7291 3310 and finally for FPS call 0845 070 0702. For the more affluent amongst us there is, on the market, a neat little gadget (Call Blocker) that intercepts calls for you and thus reduces the majority of unwanted calls including those irritating International calls such as the common "This is your Captain welcoming you aboard" recorded message type call which bypass the TPS system as they do not originate from the UK. It's cost is £54.99 inc VAT plus a £4.99 postage charge, but this might be a very small price to pay if it saves you or an elderly relative being caught out by just one scam call that might eventually cost you/them thousands. (Believe us, plenty of people do get caught even those who say "it won't happen to me", remember as we get older we tend to become much more vulnerable). The bump-off on their website says it can stop "Telesales calls; Silent calls; Automated/robot calls; Fax calls; Market research calls and International calls. It works alongside the TPS and Silent Callgard mentioned above and is ok to use with emergency/panic alarms. It does not however stop calls from friends and family, where-ever they may be in the world, so you won't miss calls that you are happy to accept. This may sound as though it will require some highly technical setup that could possibly be beyond the general member of public, but rest assured it doesn't require anything more technical than plugging it into your telephone line. To view further details about this go to http://www.callblocker.co.uk/ or ring them on 0800 988 0210. And before anyone asks "NO" I am not on commission from them for promoting this product. Minster Flower Show Don’t forget this years launch day on Saturday 9th May outside the Gossip Shop as usual. Thank you for the feedback on our plans for the show and for your continued support. Please remember the gate fee this year will be £3 per person. Don’t forget the Photo Competition - Theme “On The Water”. We also need volunteers to help on the Friday evening, during the day on the Saturday and again on the Sunday morning. If you can spare us some time please let us know. Thank you. We are also planning to resurrect the Flower Show Grand draw this year so look out for tickets on sale prior to the event more on this in a later issue.

Minster Bowls Club No, we haven’t been asleep, or in hibernation. Short Mat bowling on Tuesday and Thursday roll-ups has been well supported. The Wednesday night Pairs Competition has been completed. Friday night Fours are now well under way. There are 36 actual players plus supporters enjoying the atmosphere whilst supporting the bar. We also have 2 teams in the East Kent League, in different divisions, playing quite well. With all the expenses we have to pay for the loan on the Ground and Pavilion, Council Tax, Public Liability Insurance, electricity, heating fuel, water, waste disposal, fund raising is a regular occurrence. HOW DO WE DO IT, and in a way that keeps members happy ? We have Sunday dinners, Christmas dinner, New Years party and disco, quiz night, race night and dance lessons, plus the raffle at every opportunity. It is surprising how many non-members are asking members to invite them to our functions. Most of these have become Social Members. Before the start of the outdoor season we have more fun nights planned. Our Open Day is on Sunday 21st June for you Team Leaders to get a team together once again.

March 2009 NEW CATHOLIC PARISH ARRANGEMENTS FOR MINSTER (AND RAMSGATE) By Reverend Father Steven Fisher BSC BTh JCL MCL JVParish Priest, Saints Ethelbert and Gertrude, Ramsgate and Minster Contact Tel No: 01843 592071 Thanet has a very rich and complex Catholic history, and it can only be touched upon in the briefest manner in this short article. It should be noted from the outset that there will be no exposition on Catholic education in Ramsgate in this article: this is a complex issue in its own right; not mentioned either are places other than Catholic Churches where Mass was said (such as at Monkton, Cliffsend and RAF Manston). It should be pointed out too that this is not an academic article, and thus citations and footnotes are conspicuous by their absence. If you would like to know from where a particular point comes, please ask me. The creation of the new parish of “Saints Ethelbert and Gertrude, Ramsgate and Minster” (to give it its formal title) is merely the latest chapter in the book of the Catholic Faith in this part of Thanet. Since Saint Augustine landed in the parish (at Ebbsfleet) in 597AD to convert the kingdom of Kent to Christianity there have been numerous changes in ecclesiastical structures: after all, 1412 years is a long time! It is beyond the scope of this brief overview to dwell on the first millennium of Catholic history and we must needs rush forward to the eighteenth century. In 1797 a Mission was established in Margate, and the Mission chapel which is today Saints Austin and Gregory Church came into being. One of the towering names of this period is the Reverend Thomas Costigan who looked after Catholics from Margate to Hastings which, of course, included Ramsgate and Minster. Reverend Costigan never said Mass in Minster (the honour of saying the first Catholic Mass since the reformation in Minster falls to Dom Thomas Bergh OSB, on 10th August 1878), but did regularly say Mass in Ramsgate. Living in Ramsgate at this time was Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin. There is no need to dwell overly long on Augustus Pugin–many better pens than mine have done that at length. He began the Church of Saint Augustine and Our Lady of Sorrows in 1844, which was completed after his untimely death in 1852. I say completed, but some parts of Pugun’s plans have not yet been built, and, I venture to say, probably never will be. Reverend Costigan and Pugin were rather different characters, and Rosemary Hill’s book ‘God’s Architect’ gives one a small insight into their relationship. The Church (which is now Grade I Listed) has always been expensive and difficult to maintain. As Hill puts it in her book “Father Costigan, who if unsophisticated was no fool, pointed out with justice that it was all very well having 'the feasts of Constantine the great' but it was a pity Pugin had 'not his means of raising funds'”. The Church was transferred prior to Pugin’s death to the Vicar Apostolic of the Southern District, whose successor today is the Archbishop of Southwark (the Catholic diocese in which Ramsgate is located). Pugin wanted clergy slightly more refined than the Reverend Costigan to look after the Catholics of the area in ‘his’ Church, and his prayers were answered four years after his death. Abbot Wilfred Alcock OSB established a Benedictine Community in 1856. By 1861 a full monastic observance had been established and the period of the Benedictines looking after the Catholics of Thanet began in earnest. For over 100 years Catholic Churches sprang up across Thanet thanks to the zeal, sacrifices (and financial generosity) of the Benedictines of Ramsgate, as well as numerous individuals, and the faithful of the Catholic community. The Catholics of Thanet will always owe to the Benedictines of Ramsgate a huge debt of gratitude. In 1897 the Catholics of England celebrated the 1300th anniversary of the arrival of Saint Augustine at Ebbsfleet. Perhaps flowing from an increased confidence the Catholic community looked for more ways in which to advance the catholic religion in England. In Ramsgate attention turned to the largely poor community on the East cliff of Ramsgate. It was thought that provision should be made for them, to avoid the journey to the Abbey Church on the West Cliff, a Church “adapted rather for choral offices than for congregational devotions” as a writer put it at the time. Pugin himself had made clear that the Abbey was not designed as a parish Church. The Benedictine monks brought forward proposals and financial contributions came in. By far the largest amount of money came from one person, Miss Frances Elizabeth Ellis (1846-1930). She had a considerable fortune which she spent almost entirely on establishing schools, hospitals, orphanages and small Churches. There is not space here to go into the fascinating life of Mrs Ellis and her conversion to the Catholic Faith. She gave approximately 90% of the cost of the new Church, as well as providing the land upon which it sits. One of her houses, Victory Villa, was sited on the plot of land upon which the Church and school now sit. Cont’d next page.

New Catholic Parish Arrangements for Minster (and Ramsgate) Cont’d....

The architect of the Church was Peter Paul Pugin, youngest son of Augustus Pugin, and its design could not be more different to that of the Abbey Church. The builder was William Woodgate Martin whose firm, WW Martin and Sons, is still situated next door to the Church. The Benedictine Community looked after the Church of Saints Ethelbert and Gertrude from its opening in 1902 until 1989. The Church of Saint Benedict started in a former Builders’ shed in Cheriton Avenue, Ramsgate. It was opened in 1930, and was used for over 35 years. Then a new Church was built on Whitehall Road; it was opened in 1966 to serve the people of Newington and Whitehall. Very quickly this new Church cemented the great sense of community felt (to this day) by the Catholics of Newington and Whitehall, being used not just as a Church but also as a hall, and a resource for the local community. The Benedictine community looked after the Church of Saint Benedict from its opening until 31st December 2008 when the Church of Saint Benedict closed its doors as a Church for the final time. Turning now to Minster, a Benedictine convent of nuns, originally founded in Ramsgate in 1865, moved to Minster in 1878 having been given a large house there by a Mr Gascoyne. This community of nuns left Minster in 1891. In 1898 the Sisters of Mercy arrived in Minster and moved into the house given by Mr Gascoyne, running a house for orphan girls. Around 1920 these sisters left and were replaced by the Sisters of the Poor Servants of God, who stayed but two years in Minster. The current Benedictine Community of nuns arrived in 1937 from Eichstatt in Bavaria. In 1940 the sisters were placed in an internment camp in Devon (since they were German). They returned to Computer Installation & Repair Web Design & Hosting the village in 1944. From 2007 onwards they have hosted the Sunday services for the Catholics in Minster, which reduced the number of Churches in Minster Tuition available having Mass on a Sunday from two to one. on most popular packages The seemingly financially inexhaustible Miss Ellis provided funds for the 20 YEARS EXPERIENCE building of the parish Church of Saint Mildred in St Mildred’s Road, Minster. 01843 821243/07739 486707 The building was begun in 1900 and opened in 1901. From the beginning the parish was looked after by the Benedictine monks of Ramsgate. Minster www.minster.net obtained its first resident priest in Fr Augustine Keniry OSB (parish priest from 1939-1961). The Benedictines of Ramsgate handed the parish back to the diocese in 1983, and the diocese maintained a resident priest in Minster MB BUILDING & until 2006. From 2007 the parish was entrusted to the care of Saints Ethelbert LANDSCAPING and Gertrude in Ramsgate, and Sunday services ceased to be offered at the Church, being transferred to the Chapel of Our Lady and Saint Andrew at SERVICES Saint Mildred’s Priory, Minster Abbey. The Church of Saint Mildred will Extensions * Refurbishments close its doors for the final time on Wednesday 18th February 2009. Loft and Garage Conversions On 25th February 2009 (Ash Wednesday) the Catholic Community, Property Maintenance and Repairs thanks to the generosity of the Vicar and Parochial Church Council of Minster, will move its mid-week service to a new home: the Anglican Parish Church Block Paving * Turfing * Decking of Saint Mary the Virgin. Garden Clearance * Fencing And so into the future. The little Church of Saints Ethelbert and Gertrude Water Features has become the parish Church of Ramsgate and Minster, and the Abbey Church of Saint Augustine and Our Lady of Sorrows is now predominantly Professional and Reliable Service a monastic chapel, albeit open to the public. The Catholic community will Fully Insured no longer have a Church in Newington, and in Minster Sunday services will Free Quotations take place at Minster Abbey. A time of change, yes, but through change Give Chris a call on: comes growth. The Catholic Church has changed much in the 1412 years 07883 065740 since Saint Augustine landed in our parish, and will undoubtedly change in the next 1412 years. I wonder what the Parish Priest of Ramsgate will write 29 Watchester Lane, Minster in the year 3421AD?

March 2009 LONDON MARATHON 2009 RUNNERS Held on 26th April

Odette Collard-Woolmer, 61 Monkton Road I will be running the London Marathon for the British Heart Foundation. I have never run a marathon before, in fact the furthest I had run before signing up to this was 5k. 26.2 miles – what a long way?? Cycling - no problem, running - a whole different kettle of fish. At the moment I cannot begin to imagine what this is going to feel like. I am training hard which is very difficult at this time of year with the cold weather and the dark nights. Oh yes and the recent blizzard which I got caught in the middle of, running along the cycle path on the top road! I am doing this for a really good cause, to raise money for the British Heart Foundation which I believe will help every single one of us at some time in our lives – we all have a heart. The reason I have chosen the British Heart Foundation as my charity is because I know many people both young and old affected by heart problems and I also lost my granddad at a young age through heart disease. My target is £1800 – and I am also running with 4 work colleagues and our team target is a staggering £10,000. At the moment, as well as our tough training schedule, we are working hard on fundraising ideas and events. For those of you who don’t know me I live in the village and have done all of my life as do many of my family. There are many faces that I know and also plenty that I don’t. I would like to ask for your support in helping me raise the £1800 that I have pledged to the British Heart Foundation. Please can you sponsor me – your donation however small can make a difference. You can donate in a number of ways: • Collection boxes - You may have seen my collection boxes in The Salon (Thank you Julie) and the village butchers (Thank you Andy) • Through my just giving web page which is http://www.justgiving.com/odettecollardwoolmer • Fill out my sponsor form which my mum (Pat Collard) will carry with her when she is shopping in the village, at Soup, Horticultural evenings or one of the many functions at the Salvation Army. Many thanks in advance for your kind donation.

COMPUTER CORNER The Internet seems to have taken over everything these days. We have access to more information than we could ever possibly imagine and “surfing” can get really addictive. But if your gateway to the World Wide Web should suddenly stop working, there’s plenty you can do with your computer whilst the clever Internet people get it sorted out. 10 things you can do with your computer without an Internet connection:1. Tidy up your computer files. Organise your letters and photographs stored in ‘My Documents’ or ‘My Pictures' into folders. 2. Record some of your favourite CDs onto the computer using Windows Media Player or iTunes. 3. Clean up your hard drive. Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup. 4. Press F1 in any Microsoft Office program and learn at least one new thing from the Table of Contents. 5. Personalize your PC’s Desktop – start by changing the wallpaper to one of your favourite pictures. 6. Point your cursor / arrow at different areas on the screen and click the right mouse button. You’ll be surprised what it comes up with. 7. If you have a webcam, make a video diary. 8. From the Start Menu > Programs, go into each program to find out what it is. (Be careful not to uninstall or delete anything you shouldn’t!). 9. Read your printer’s instruction manual. 10. Clean your keyboard and sort out the plugs and wires.
