June 2014

EDITORIAL Well the warm weathers here at last and I’m stuck under the stairs again, typical! Sad to see the airport close, let’s hope it’s not forever. Had loads to squeeze in again this month, and believe me I’ve squeezed real Ray hard in some places, trouble is one or two of the report writers seem to suffer from a bit of verbal diarrhea at times as I’m forever trying to shorten the same ones each month. I remember being interviewed by Pat Marsh on the radio a few years back and he asked me what I did, when I said I edited a village magazine his reply was ‘well there can’t be too much to actually edit in that’, to which I replied that I often Amy Semi-retired!! wielded my ‘red pen’ on articles that I thought dragged on a bit. Nothing’s changed over the years - I’m still at it. My good lady and I received an invite to attend the Twinning Anniversary, but having replied to say yes we would be attending, before checking my calendar, I discovered to my horror that I’d already planned to go to Brighton that day to see Brenda the Historic Commercial Vehicle Run. Well not to be done out of a free meal I got up before the lark and motored up to Crystal Palace to see the ‘off’ - arriving there at 6.15am - start time listed as 7.00am - I found I’d missed seeing the steam trucks leave by about ¾ of an hour. However I still got to see a couple of hundred other and took around 550 photographs (thank goodness we’re not still using vehicles Diane roll film - that’d have cost me a fortune) - back to Minster in time to get my usual Sunday bath, (not my normal 4 to 5hrs though), then off to the Village Hall for some great entertainment and a wonderful meal - turned out my whole day was worth all the effort - thank you to the Twinning Association, from us both we really enjoyed our afternoon. Next May it’s definitely Brighton, (or thereabouts), before Nora that though I’m off to see the Veteran Car Run in November (Pyecombe is my preferred viewing spot as they’ve all slowed down there having just climbed quite a hill). Enough of my waffle, let me now speak of something of more interest to our readers, that being the fact that the Minster Show Schedule is now available at Henry various outlets in the village, so sport a very reasonable 40p and purchase a copy. All the various classes and trophies are listed plus it contains entry forms for the Show tent , the garden and colouring competitions and recipes for some of the cookery classes. I can also now report that Kaddy Lee-Preston is ‘Opening the Show’ for us this year. Entry is still a very reasonable £3.00pp and well worth it for a great Diane afternoons entertainment. Remember the Business Association AGM is on Thursday 29 May 7pm for 7.15pm at the Sports Pavilion in the Rec, membership is open to all businesses operating from Minster, Monkton, Sarre, St Nicholas, Acol, Manston and Cliffsend and they are in need of some new blood on the committee so they’d love to see you Diana there. Now a quick plea for ‘readers’ to join one of our audio teams to help us produce this magazine as a CD for the visually impaired. Can you read clearly? Then give me a ring on 07914 623 287 or email editor@minstermatters.org.uk . It isn’t onerous and we only ask that you read for us every other month, usually a Tuesday Kevin evening at the Holiday Inn where we record from around 7.30pm to 9.30pm. Finally I’d just like to say a personal thank you to those TDC tenants in Minster who voted for me in the recent ‘Area Board’ elections. I can report I was one of the 13 people elected to serve for the next 3 years and I’ll have attended my first quarterly meeting before you read this. So that’s it for this month, just my usual question - where’s Zac?

JUNE NEWSLETTER SPRING FAYRE At the time of going to press our Spring Fayre had not yet taken place so we couldn’t at this time announce the winner of our luxury weekend away for six people courtesy of Foxhunter Caravan Parks. However, a full list of all the lucky prize winners will be on display at the surgery. We would like to thank all those who supported us throughout this event, and also those who purchased raffle tickets. A full report will be given in our next newsletter. DONATIONS We would sincerely like to thank the two patients who have recently made generous donations towards our fund raising project, one of whom didn’t leave any contact details when he left a donation at the surgery pharmacy whilst collecting a prescription. We would be extremely grateful if he could contact us, either via the surgery or by ringing 821200, so that we can thank him personally. The other person, who wished to remain anonymous, also donated one of the main raffle prizes, and has been thanked personally on behalf of the group. We would also like to thank our prolific cake maker Hilary from Monkton (assisted by her husband Malcolm, no doubt!), for her beautiful selection of cupcakes and sugar mice. They were delicious I was told! DON’T FORGET TO REGISTER FOR OUR NEW WEB SITE ! A new more “user friendly’ web site is now available giving patients access to new on-line services, for example; ordering repeat prescriptions, making appointments, travel advice for immunisations and access to patient details, to verify/amend as necessary, log on at the usual address; www.minstersurgery-thanet.co.uk APPOINTMENT REMINDERS VIA TEXT MESSAGE This service is now available to all patients, and hopefully will help overcome the number of missed appointments. If you wish to be included in this system, please advise the surgery and confirm your mobile number. Several hundred of our patients have already, so WHY DONT YOU? MISSED APPOINTMENTS Last month these were greatly reduced thank you very much. As if to emphasise the need for such reminders, last month’s figures for doctor’s appointments were greatly reduced, but are still unnecessarily high and could be reduced even further, especially for the nurses. Last month 53 patients did not attend their doctor’s appointment (over 30% less !) and 33 patients did not attend their nurse’s appointment (over 30% more!). THAT’S STILL 86 PATIENTS WASTING VALUABLE APPOINTMENTS, so please don't be complacent: DON’T NEED IT CANCEL IT……….KEEP FORGETTING - REGISTER ! SURGERY CLOSURE DAYS Please note that the surgery will close from 12.00noon on the following days for training purposes: Wednesday 11th June and Thursday 10th July. Please ensure that you have sufficient medication to cover you during these periods. Should you need to see a doctor when the surgery is closed, please call the NHS 111 service via the normal surgery number 821333 where you will be transferred automatically, or you can call direct on 111, to receive non urgent confidential health advice and information for you and your family. For urgent/life threatening cases please dial 999 as usual. PATIENT GROUP MEETING If you have any issues you would like to raise at our next meeting, or require further information on any of the above, then please contact either Ken Self on 821200 or Jeanne Lawrence on 821049

Freshly Baked Minster Cream Teas

My daughter Chloe (15), has recently been successful in gaining a place at Canterbury College to study a Level 3 Diploma in Photography and Digital Imaging. As part of her interview she was asked to present a series of 15 photographs that she had taken. Chloe went for a walk around our village and found creative ways to photograph the letters to spell out ‘Minster in Thanet’. She intends to continue her studies at University after the course. Her future aspirations are to become a professional photographer specialising in portrait photography.

Country Life I’m a country boy at heart, you know I love the countryside I love to let the hounds go To flush foxy from his hide I let him have both barrels That’s usually the end And then we hold a solemn wake For our furry little friend

I can gut and skin a rabbit I can disembowel a hare I’ve got the country habit Of love, respect and care For all the little animals Well done, or medium rare And of all the lovely dickey birds The pheasant is the winner Especially when pot roasted Served with vegetables for dinner! Vic.

Sponsored Walk 2014 Just a note to say a BIG thank you to all the local businesses in Minster that sponsored myself, Grace and Mollie on our 10 mile walk from Minnis Bay to Reculver and back again on Monday 5 May. Thankfully the sun shone and there were no blisters! I would also like to say a huge thank you to the village group who generously sponsored us for £100.00; this helped us raise £400.00 for Minster Carnival Association. Once again thank you. LONDON MARATHON Dear Editor and Team, Just a note to say thank you for covering our London Marathon training and sponsorship for Alzheimer's in the April Minster Matters. My wife Jo and I had completely different starts, did not see each other at any point in the race and finished within 43 seconds of each other! Both our times were a very respectable 4hrs and 4 minutes… and yes she did beat me. If only I hadn’t stopped for that 44 second pit stop at mile 17! We have raised almost £2 thousand for the Alzheimer's Society supported by more than a dozen donations from people in the village. A huge thank you to all. Jon and Jo Holl

Dear Editor, I was pointed to this site by a friend. I thought it may be useful for others to know via MM: http://www.turn2us.org.uk/default.aspx The friend found grant funding for a career change when all other channels failed as she was “too old”. Bizarrely she also found that as she was a widow over the age of 60, and known to her local minister, then she qualified for grants to buy medical aids if she needed them! It seems to be an interesting site with some unusual sources of funding. Kind regards, (name withheld)

MINSTER ARMBOUTS CAPPEL TWINNING ASSOCIATION We now have the report of the Anniversary Day held on 4 May which thankfully turned out to be dry and sunny. The Parade gathered at the centre of the village near The New Inn ready to process down to the Old Schools for the formal ‘Meet and Greet’. The pick-up from Minster Garage which led the procession, was suitably decorated with flags and the Twinning Association banner, this was followed by a colourful entourage which included the excellent Band from 438 (Thanet) Squadron Air Training Corps, the five Giants from both villages, Miss Minster and her Princesses, plus the French and English supporters. Once inside the Old Schools, refreshments were given and there was an additional performance by the drums from the Air Cadets. This was to have been followed by a bagpipe solo, but hey, there’s always one calamity and the pipe fell out of the pipe bag! Unfortunately a repair could not to be resolved on the day for which we were quite sad as it should have been a very stirring and popular rendition. The young cadet who was to have played it was most disappointed too. Speeches were made by Twinning Association Chairman, Roy Bailey, French Mayor, Jean Luc Darcourt, and Chairman of Minster Parish Council, Bob Groves. Gifts were then exchanged, our Association presenting the Mayor with an apple tree and a beautifully engraved presentation plaque that had been kindly donated by Whybrow Stonemasons and our visitors’ gift to us was a hamper of locally produced French specialities. The next two hours was free time when visitors could explore the village and enjoy the entertainment that The Bell Inn had provided in the form of singer Martin Croones. He was a big hit with all who ventured into the pub garden and he even had French and English people dancing on the lawn, much to the appreciation of the onlookers. Also collecting a big crowd by the Lych Gate were members of the Wantsum Morris who were showing their skills of precision and expertise as they struck their batons in hair raising crashes. Jean Luc was persuaded to join in and he appeared to enjoy every minute of it and even walked off unscathed. Next on the itinerary was the delicious buffet that O’Shea’s had been contracted to supply, this was soon devoured. The Ceilidh music which produced the party atmosphere was down to the 3 musicians, Penny and Stuart led by committee member Chris Ransom on his accordian. More entertainment followed outside in The Bell Inn car park with a splendid performance by the Maypole Dancers from Nikinattynoos. Once they got their breath, they went back inside to amuse us with a silhouette performance, assisted by members of Minster Playhouse, showing a typical day return trip to France. The choir from Minster School and the dancers from Armbouts Cappel also gave magnificent performances on stage. There was a raffle on the day and the winner of the 1st prize was Karen Brazil. Her ticket was drawn out by David Otteson, General Manager of the Holiday Inn Express who had donated the prize of a 2 night stay in Staffordshire, lucky Karen! It was soon time for the day to end and the send-off finale was performed by the Hand Bell Ringers from St Mary’s Church, delightful. Simon Pickering, Ray Owen and some of our committee members have sent along a selection of magnificent photographs that will be uploaded to our website www.minsterarmboutstwinning.org.uk in the near future. In the meantime though, you can view some of these photos on our Facebook page at facebook.com/minstertwinning. Please tag any of your friends and remember to ‘like’ the page. We thank everyone who organised, participated in, donated to and supported the event. Anyone wishing to be involved with the Twinning Association, please contact our Secretary Heather Epps on 826 406.

THE POPPY The Poppy lends its magnificent colour to our countryside and fields. It has a timeless magic, that somehow yields. A sense of eternity between present and past. Also of a true love, and friendship, that forever lasts. For those anniversaries that return each year. Perhaps of those we have loved, and are no longer no near. When one has not the knowledge of a postal address. Yet realises they reside in a place of the best. Where it is a thing of the past, to have pain or suffering. This beautiful red Poppy, is a true sign of remembering. Yvonne

MINSTER-IN-THANET WI May was our Resolutions meeting, so after we had concluded the business side of the meeting we listened to this year’s resolution- Increasing organ donation ‘The NFWI notes that three people die every day whilst waiting for an organ transplant. We call on every member of the WI to make their wishes regarding organ donation known, and to encourage their families and friends, and members of their local communities to do likewise.’ Members were given a ‘for’ and ‘against’ view and one member stood up and spoke about her own personal experience of organ donation- she donated her own kidney to her son 26 years ago! We voted ‘for’ the resolution!! Ralph Hoult then gave a captivating slide show about ‘Old Ramsgate’-it was interesting to see how much it had changed and how many landmarks have disappeared! Art at the Abbey

at Parkminster, Minster Abbey, Bedam Court Lane, Minster

Saturday 7th & Sunday 8th June 10a.m - 4.30pm The beautifully restored barn at Parkminster in the grounds of historic Minster Abbey will again be home to an exhibition of paintings and craftwork by Minster Art Group. Admission is free and refreshments are available. This is the second exhibition by the group and is back by popular request following the success of the 2011 show. The group, which was started by two local artists in 2009 has grown to its present capacity membership of 30 and a second satellite group has recently started in Minster Village Hall. The group is made up of men and women from all walks of life and all ages. There is a wide variety of artistic ability from the very experienced to the beginners. Group members are encouraged to bring children and grandchildren along in school holidays – some of the children’s work will be on show. Many items will be on sale and in addition to their usual work, each artist has been invited to prepare one piece of art or craft to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the first World War. We do hope that you can support our local artists by visiting the exhibition at some point during the two days and we look forward to meeting you. Should you need any more information, do please get in touch. Anne Lehane, Group Publicity 01843 821 092 e.mail: anne@lehane23.plus.com

Zac’s Musings Thought I’d give you a change of picture this month. This is me looking a bit more relaxed than in my usual mugshot. It’s been pretty peaceful here except of course for the Easter bank holiday when we were inundated with the grandchildren, really nice to see them but also great when they go home again, I get my armchair back, it’s so much more comfortable than the carpet under the coffee table!. Tom the eldest has just passed his driving test at the first attempt, he was just starting school when I joined the family, doesn’t time fly when you’re having fun. Anyhow well done Tom, just got to save now for the insurance, more shifts at McDonalds me thinks!! Even the old boy is less stressed this month so it’s a win win situation here at the moment, let’s hope it lasts!!

A Cracking Poem

Eggstremely Eggciting News AT MINSTER CE PRIMARY SCHOOL, A CRACKING DISCOVERY WAS UNCOVERED! During their assembly, the lockdown bell hit the ears of the pupils! Thoughts raced through their minds. Suddenly Mrs Stone and Mrs Alentis came in and whispered what the problem was to Mr McCarthy. Suspence filled the room as the children sat quietly. We were reassured that it was safe to look at according to PCSO England. As we approached the discovery zone, a policeman was guarding the object. As we came closer, we realised what the “Object” was. An Egg! It was bigger than an ostrich egg! That week, the whole school did a “Get Writing Task” about the egg.

The lockdown bells ring, Children all scream, What’s going on during the middle of spring?, Who?, What?, When?, Where?, Why?, Maybe a dinosaur?, No one knows it’s a complete surprise?,

An Egg-citing Poem An egg has been discovered, Great cries of fear arise, Giant could it be, Could it be a dinosaur surprise, Maybe a phoenix, What about a bird, You never know, it could be Richard III. By Bethany Strickett

The Minster School Easter Competition Easter was a very eggciting time for Minster school but one of the most eggciting events was the Easter competition. It is a competition where pupils from the school either decorate a boiled egg, make an Easter bonnet or a miniature Easter garden. In the morning, all of the ks1 pupils who had made a bonnet walked around the playground, modelling their creations. In the afternoon all of the school entered their eggs, bonnets and gardens to be judged by Mrs Stone and Mr McCarthy (they had a very difficult job!). All the winners received an Easter egg.
