MINSTER BUSINESS ASSOCIATION Following our first very successful year, having achieved all of our targets, thanks in the main to our retiring Secretary and Treasurer, we are now looking forward to 2014/15. With new Officers filling these posts we will again be producing both an update to the flyer/map and our directory, plus this year we also hope to be able to organise a ‘Traders Day’ to showcase our members businesses to the general public. Members report good feedback and an increase in business from the directory which is great to hear. We will again be having a stall at the Minster Show in July to both promote members businesses, and recruit new businesses, so come along and meet us there. We are also looking at having our logo produced as window stickers this year for businesses to use in their vehicles and premises, so another exciting year ahead. Do you run a business in Minster, Monkton, St Nicholas, Sarre, Acol, Manston or Cliffsend? Are you a member? If not and you’d like to join please contact our Hon. Secretary at for a form. 2014/15 membership is just £25, the year begins on 1 August and we are accepting applications as of now. Our website is also up and running and you’ll find all members businesses listed on their own page, plus various documentation and Minutes of Meetings are available for downloading from the site. Find us at , we look forward to seeing you there.

Firstly this month I’d like to put out an appeal for a volunteer or two to take on the regular delivery of this magazine to the Heronsbrook Estate (Cheney and St Benedicts). I’d also like to ask for volunteers to be on a standby list should we need someone to cover for illness or holidays. Very unusually I am covering for 3 rounds as well as my own this month and I have another being covered by a volunteer, so more standby help would Nora really make a difference at times. Think about it and if you feel you could maybe spare us the odd hour or so, you may only be called upon once a year, we’d appreciate hearing from you. Crime in the village seems to have increased dramatically just recently with sheds, garages and homes being broken into, even in the middle of the day! So please be extra Henry vigilant and keep doors and windows locked especially if you are not at home, don’t give an open invite to these criminals. The outcome of this, however, is that more residents are becoming interested in Neighbourhood Watch, which has been pretty dormant in the village of late, so if you have an email facility at home and you would like to become involved in keeping an eye on your street then please contact Tony, Village NHW Secretary, by emailing him at: Diane . He’ll be pleased to hear from you. Seems that some of the youths in the village just can’t respect other people’s property, not least that which has actually been supplied for their enjoyment. We’ve had numerous reports of incidents and damage at the new play area and it has now come to the point where the installation of further equipment and amenities for all have been put on hold. The Parish Council intend to install CCTV, the cost of which will come out of Diana money put aside to fund the other amenities that were destined for that area, and they intend to seek prosecution for any criminal damage they gather evidence on. Please read PCSO Steve England’s report on page 10 and the Parish Council article on page 6 of this issue. Finally, I’d like to just add a reminder to individuals, groups and those responsible for Kevin the hire of premises in the village that we need your input to the online village calendar, please don’t forget to add your events and bookings regularly so as it is kept up to date. We get a lot of feedback from residents who view it and say what a useful resource it is, but it’ll only remain so if it gets regularly updated. So please if you have something to add then get it in to us and we’ll get it published. So that’s it for this month, just my usual question - where’s Zac?

JULY NEWSLETTER ANNUAL SPRING FAYRE - MAIN PRIZE WINNERS We are delighted to announce that the winner of our “luxury weekend away for 6 people courtesy of Foxhunter Caravan Parks” was Mr. Mrs. R. Baynham, Mrs. C. Cornwall won the second prize and Mrs. D. Smith won the third, all three live in Minster. A full list of all the lucky winners, ticket numbers and their various allocations, is on display at the surgery. All have been notified and have received their prizes with the exception of one “UNCLAIMED PRIZE” WHITE TICKET 364 - IS THAT YOU? If so please let us know ASAP! We would like to thank everyone who supported us throughout this event, as well as all those who purchased raffle tickets, which helped make the whole event such an overwhelming success WE’VE HIT OUT TARGET Thanks to the tremendous support from so many of our patients and friends, we have now raised the £2,500 necessary to purchase the “CARDIOTENS APBPB & ECG MONITOR” much sooner than anticipated. The equipment is now at the surgery and following commissioning and training will be in use by end of the month. We would particularly like to thank Gill at “Field Pharmacy” Minster, for her assistance in expediting a speedy purchase and delivery of the equipment. A formal presentation will be held during the month, and we invite everyone to attend. Please ring 821200 or the surgery for further details. Information can also be found on our noticeboard in the waiting room. DISTRICT NURSES You may be aware that the structure and organisation of district nurses has recently changed, but although it is not anticipated to have any effect on patient care, we would appreciate any comments and concerns you may have on the service you now currently receive. SEASONAL WINTER ‘FLU VACCINATIONS Vaccination Clinics will be held on the following days: Saturdays 4 October and 1 November, between 9am and 1pm. Eligible and “at risk” patients will receive a reminder on their “Repeat Prescription Form” and will be invited to make an appointment on either of those days. MISSED APPOINTMENTS Again a slight improvement, thank you very much, but still last month 47 patients did not attend their doctor’s appointment and 31 patients did not attend their nurse’s appointment so again that’s 78 patients wasting valuable appointments and time. PLEASE DON’T GET COMPLACENT DON’T NEED IT, CANCEL IT - KEEP FORGETTING, REGISTER ! SURGERY TRAINING DAYS Please note that the surgery will close from 12.00 Midday on the following days: Wednesday 9 July and Wednesday 10 September. Please ensure that you have sufficient medication to last you during these periods. Should you need to see a doctor when the surgery is closed, please call the “NHS 111 Service” via the normal surgery number 821333 where you will be transferred automatically, or you can call direct on “111“ to receive “non-urgent” confidential health advice and information for you and your family. For urgent or life threatening cases please dial “999“. PATIENT GROUP MEETING If you have any issues you would like to raise at our meeting in July, or require further information on any of the above, then please contact either Ken Self on 821200 or Jeanne Lawrence on 821049.

21, St. Mildred’s Rd During "Open Gardens" weekend we had a sales table,& a plant stall in this garden. All the money raised has been donated to the Doctor’s Surgery towards a Heart Monitor. A cheque for £150 has been handed to Dr. Crosfield to boost their funds. A big thank you to everyone who helped raise so much. A special "Thank You" to Carol & Maurice Burton who gave up their weekend to run the whole thing for us, allowing us to meet & greet those visiting our garden. We couldn't have done it without their help. Gwen & Glynne Hibbert In Memory of Daphne Huckstep (1929 - 2014) We would like to express our sincere thanks to all those people who sent cards, flowers and condolences at the passing of Daphne. Thanks also to Dr Elliott and the staff at Minster Surgery for all their help in making Daphne's life more comfortable and manageable. Daphne put up a brave fight but passed away peacefully on 11 May 2014 aged 84 after a very long illness. Daphne was cremated on 27 May at Thanet Crematorium, conducted by Rev’d Richard Braddy to whom thanks must go for his support and guidance at this difficult time. Finally thanks also to funeral director Jonathan Cole and his staff for all their support and help. Colin, Wendy and family For the attention of Minster motorists – parking problems. As most of you are aware, we have a problem in Monkton Road between the car park and The Saddler public house, with buses and other large vehicles that serve our village. These vehicles have trouble getting through. This week alone I have had three bus drivers and the warden knock on my door asking if I know the owners of the cars that have double parked. This is worse at school times. On Thursday last week a BMW was badly damaged after someone parked opposite him. The last thing we want is double yellow lines as this would kill the shops. So come on, Minster, please have some consideration for others, including the residents of Monkton Road. Name and address supplied.

The official opening of the new play area in Minster took place on a chilly and blustery morning in May, however despite this there was a good turnout Freshly Baked of Councillors, parents and children to the event. The ribbon was cut jointly by the Parish Council’s newest and youngest Minster Cream Teas Councillor, Jack Whybrow and the Chairperson of Minster School’s Youth Council, Olivia Rae. Since the opening the play area is proving very successful however disappointingly it is also now a meeting point for youths during the evening attracting anti-social behaviour to the site. The boundary fence has been damaged by youths doing their best to cause MPG CARPET CLEANING damage to the equipment. Because of the behaviour of a certain number of (small local family run business) youths the Parish Council have agreed to install CCTV to cover the play area CARPET CLEANING FOR THE 21st CENTURY so that any further damage will lead to prosecutions for criminal damage. These ladies are volunteer charity workers for the Pilgrims Hospice. Minster Bowls Club are delighted that they were able to accept an invitation to participate at the opening. This is a small way of thanking them and Esther Jenner for their work in all weathers collecting for the Pilgrims Hospice. Sport England’s financial contribution together with club funding have enabled us to provide facilities second to none in Thanet and across most of Kent. The new complex will allow for increased membership and we hope will encourage members of the parish and community to consider joining the club and participate in our lovely game for fun, competition, and friendship. Thank you everyone for your support. Brian East. Chairman of the Sport England 'Inspired Facilities Project'

Residents of Minster, As the summer months approach I know many of you will have concerns about anti-social behaviour in the village. I wanted to provide you with some reassurance that Kent Police will be making every effort possible to identify any unacceptable behaviour in our communities and intervene at the earliest opportunity. Kent Police have introduced a dedicated Anti-Social Behaviour Car which will be operating on a daily basis across the Thanet District with the primary objective of responding to any calls received in relation to anti-social behaviour, whilst also providing a visual presence in our communities to act as a deterrence. The officers staffing the car will also be heavily emphasising positive engagement with people they encounter to prevent any anti-social behaviour that the officers may envisage happening. However, I must emphasise that this resource is tasked by demand so please report any anti-social behaviour that you are experiencing via 101; furthermore you can also notify PCSO Craig Raisbeck or myself of any previous incidents or on-going issues so that we can request patrols pay passing attention to the area when we are not available. Lastly I would like to provide you all with an update on the school parking measures being discussed by Kent Police, Minster Primary School and Minster Parish Council. I am continuing to liaise with all of these agencies on a regular basis and we are all working hard to identify how we can reduce the traffic flow and encourage different modes of transport into the village, to alleviate the parking problem. As I am sure you will all appreciate this is a lengthy process that involves a considerable amount of discussion and I am extremely thankful for your continued patience. I want to ensure we dedicate as much time as needed to these ideas rather than rushing them and not getting the maximum benefit from these initiatives. We have developed a scheme called the Minster Mountain Challenge which we will hopefully be launching on the 30 June. I will be attending the school on the 25 June to provide an Assembly about the idea and information will be disseminated to parents about the scheme. As always I am more than happy to discuss policing matters in the village, so please contact me and we can discuss anything you wish to raise. Kind regards, PCSO Steven England.

STRAWBERRY TEA I would like to thank all who came along to support us at the Strawberry Tea. £675 was raised on the day for the Salvation Army – brilliant – many thanks. JACK’S BORNEO TRIP UPDATE Hi everybody, well I am off to Borneo on the 20 July! I can’t believe how quick the time has gone, I have been busy with my fundraising and at the time of writing this I am pleased and proud to tell you that I am only a few hundred pounds away from raising the full amount!!. I have been holding my monthly book stall at Thanet Farmers Market and want to say thanks to the market managers for my free stall. I held a book sale on my driveway recently when Minster held the Open Gardens weekend and I sold many books, met lots of lovely people and was touched as always by people’s kind donations. Attwells very generously held a raffle for me and raised £123!! so a massive thank you to Karen, Jenny and Clive. Minster resident Sarah has kept me busy with gardening and also donated many raffle prizes for the Attwells raffle so a big thank you to Sarah too. Eagle Vets made a very kind and generous donation after hearing about my expedition! as did Thanet Lions (thank you!), Minster Tandoori kindly allowed me to hold a fundraising meal in their restaurant and I have also had donations handed into Attwells from people in the village so thank you to those people too. I would run out of room if I listed everyone I wanted to thank so I just want you ALL to know that without your support, kindness and generosity I wouldn’t be where I am now.....on my way to Borneo to work hard to make a difference to the lives of the people and wildlife of Borneo. Thank you so much. Jack.

MINSTER ARMBOUTS CAPPEL TWINNING ASSOCIATION Just a brief report from the Association this month. Jack Whybrow, one of the leaders of Minster Scouts and also youth representative for Minster Parish Council, attended our Committee meeting in May and invited us to attend a French evening that the Scouts were holding in their headquarters on 22 May. Five committee members attended and gave a short chat on the aims of the Association, accompanied by a slide show. They were then entertained with slides of the pack’s visit to France. Following this, everyone enjoyed a buffet consisting of French foods. The evening was rounded off with a game of boules, which is a favourite pastime for the French. Thank you for inviting us to the evening which we thoroughly enjoyed. The quiz held in the RBL in aid of the WW1 Memorial on 30 May was supported by members of the committee when they entered a team. They struggled with some of the questions, but were pleased that they managed to reach a halfway point when the results were read out. A report will be given in the next edition of MM regarding the order of the day and the hopeful success at the Bowls Club where we will be entering a lads and a lasses team!! Please keep your eyes on our website for any additional information and updates. We now have software to show where, when and which countries view the website. The parting thought is that it has been viewed in Chile and India, as well as France and England! Amazing. French Speaking Group Following on from our request for new members we have decided to try to create a range of groups, a beginners group, an intermediate group and a higher level group for those of you wishing to participate in the French language. Anyone interested please send an email to Please add a subject heading of “French Group” to the mail as it will not be opened otherwise. Thanks.

St Mary's: bees, bell-tower and builders! You may have noticed that there is scaffolding around part of St Mary's church at the moment. In order for your church to remain a safe place for the whole community to enjoy we are having some major restoration work carried out on the south aisle roof and also the turret to the tower. But before this work could begin, a large swarm of bees needed to be removed and we are very grateful to Roger Thompson for moving them - over several days. This is a costly project and we are grateful for grants towards this from English Heritage and Friends of Kent Churches and also legacies that have been given to the church. Look out for further updates on the building works in Minster Matters. The church will still remain open every day throughout these works and, as always, you are welcome to join us for worship on Sundays at 9.00am or 10.00am - it would be great to see you! July 2014 OPEN GARDENS Wow! What a weekend. Thank you to everyone who attended and made this such a wonderful event. The Open Gardens weekend was a huge success and all the money raised will go towards the renovation work on our Parish Church. It was lovely to see Minster so full of people obviously enjoying the delightful gardens. One person made a wonderful remark about the gardens being all very individual and being an extension of gardeners’ personalities. Many visitors commented on the friendly and welcoming atmosphere around the village too. A lot of the gardeners put out Danish flags and signs in Danish for our European party that visited from Denmark. 50 members of the Royal Danish Horticultural Society were visiting England for 6 days and touring gardens in the South Eastern Counties. They were all overwhelmed with the warm welcome they received. It is not all villages that can boast that their Open Gardens event is truly an international affair! Next year Open Gardens will hopefully be held on 13 & 14 June. Sue Jezzard. Quiz Winner The lucky winner of the Garden Quiz Prize Draw was Sue Brooks from Broadstairs who receives a Garden Centre voucher for £25. Congratulations to Sue. Dear Editor, Great War Memorial Project Quiz Night 30 May. Over 100 people turned up on the night and we raised the spectacular sum of £898 at the quiz and were given another £100 as an extra donation afterwards! This incredible amount shows how close this subject is to the hearts of the people in our villages, and I would like to thank everyone who came along and gave so generously. The evening's success is largely due to Carol Sayer - caterer extraordinaire and whose organisational skills are worthy of a G8 Summit, Gary from the Hair of the Dog who absolutely made the evening with his stand up comedy quiz master routine (my sides still ache from laughing so much), Steve and Sam Philpot for promoting the quiz and gathering so many people and raffle prizes to make the evening the success it was, and the wonderful staff at the Royal British Legion who tirelessly looked after everyone all evening. Thank you also to The Hair of the Dog, The Corner House, The Saddlers, The New Inn, Archie's, Belle's Beauty, The Royal British Legion and the other Minster businesses and organisations who donated raffle prizes for the evening - I am sorry if I have left anybody out. It was lovely seeing so many from our little community coming together to support this worthy cause. Each of the men we are trying to commemorate has a story to tell, and our community's support means that neither the men nor their stories will now be forgotten. I really am grateful. We will keep you updated with our next fund raising events and of course with the progress regarding the memorial. Julie Seales

Anti Social Behaviour in the New Play Park Area Minster Matters received an email from a concerned resident which has been edited somewhat and published below. “There were a group of about 10 teenagers, boys and girls, absolutely doing their best to break all the equipment. Generally tearing round the place shouting and every other word began with an ‘F’ and doing their best to break the zip wire by forcing it so hard it’ll be broke soon if not now! They were swinging sideways on it bashing against the new fence, so that’ll be broke soon too. Both latches on the gates have been ripped off. There were cigarette papers, used joints, bottles and general rubbish just dumped at the swings. They’d either been drinking, smoking dope or other substances and were loud, obnoxious and had a total disregard for the other parks users and the adults there. I asked them once politely to please stop their language as there was little children using the play area, one of the boys said sorry, but the others just ignored me and carried on. There was also an elderly gentleman, a lady and a younger chap with their children in there trying to use the swings but they were all taken up by these awful kids. I eventually took my daughter and left. What a great shame, that once again such a great facility (just like the all-weather pitch) is being vandalised and people seem to just turn a blind eye for fear of retaliation from these feral children!” The original email was forwarded by us to the Parish Council (see what they have to say on page 6) and the Community Warden was also informed. The Police need to know of such happenings. See PCSO Steve England’s report on page 10 of this issue.

MINSTER SHOW This is the last magazine before ‘The Show’, on Saturday 19 July, so it seems the right time to remind everyone not to forget to purchase a schedule, just 40p from various outlets in the village, get your entries prepared for the tent or start tidying your garden. Time also to get out, get fit and get ready for the races (running or cycling), time also to make a start on your float or entry for the parade. Let’s make it a great show with plenty of competitors in all categories, go on ‘be brave’ and maybe try something new. On show day, if you are able, please walk to the recreation ground or if you are coming from outside of the village please try to come by train. If you have to bring your car please park away from the procession route and the recreation ground, space onsite is very limited and will be prioritised for those with disabilities. Kaddy Lee-Preston of BBC Weather fame is ‘Opening’ the show for us this year and we also hope to have Spongebob Squarepants, Hello Kitty and Woody coming along to entertain the youngsters. Other attractions include Mike Appleton (as Michael Buble), Deal Hoodeners, Youth Music School Steel Band, 438 (Thanet) Squadron ATC Band, Thanet Concert Band, Polar Beach and our very own Paul Cornwall. If you are bringing your bike for the cycle race please remember you must wear a helmet ( we hope to have a few spares for those who forget) and also bring a lock and chain to secure it whilst you visit the rest of the show. We are making arrangements to have an area where you can lock them to a secure fence and we’ll keep a watch on them for you. Finally, to encourage those of the fairer sex amongst us to enter the ‘ladies mile’ we are offering a cash prize to the winner this year, so come on ladies let’s see a good entry on the day. Here’s looking forward to seeing you all there!!

The welcoming of visitors by the President, Sarah Eaton-Brown, and the singing of Jerusalem saw the opening of the monthly meeting on Tuesday 10 June at 7.30 in the Minster Village Hall. Sarah thanked Ann and Don for hosting the Garden Morning on the 7 June, which raised £144.30. She also thanked those who helped serve refreshments at the Royal Opening of the Ramsgate Tunnels. Details of forthcoming events were outlined, including the Strawberry Tea at Marion’s on the 2 July; Bat & Trap with Monkton on 12 August and the Bruges Trip on 11 October. Members were invited to enter the “Denman Bursary” draw (and, later on in the evening, two members won a place on the course of their choice at the College). The Minster Show on 19 July was discussed and volunteers requested, both for the stall and the float. The talk by Helen Kendall-Tobias “Make-up for the Forever 40s Woman” was a great success, being full of tips on skin care and make up. After the refreshment break Joan Backler reported on the Federation Meeting she attended. Following the raffle, Sarah closed the meeting with an amusing story and a reminder that there is no monthly meeting in August! Forthcoming events: Tues 8 July – WI meeting – Craft Corners – All welcome Sat 19 July – Minster Flower Show – Recreation Ground Wed 23 July – Games Evening 7.30 to 10 pm – Village Hall Committee Room July – Sunshine Club outing - TBA
