Flowers by Vanessa EDITORIAL Bouquets, Baskets,Table decorations, Let me start this month by welcoming Fiona, Katie and Keith to Weddings or Funerals the team. Fiona will be attending Council meetings for us, Katie is Created with the “Personal Touch” doing a bit of this and that, when we need her assistance, and Keith For designs with a difference Ray has come on board to tackle the thorny issue of commercial Vanessa Fairbrass advertising. Look out for them joining the ‘Rogues Gallery’ anytime (C&G qualified florist) soon. (Well, when we’ve got their pictures that is) Thank you to you Rose Cottage, Manor Road, all for answering the call. St. Nicholas at Wade CT7 0NY Sadly the rain affected the Twinning Associations Fun Day but I 01843 847 012 07934 420 837 Amy noted there were quite a few brave souls who came out to support I can deliver within Thanet & Canterbury 1P/5 them and the music was pretty good too, least ways I listened to it from my bath for most of the afternoon and it sounded ok to me. Doggy doo doos and motorcycles seem to be the bane of most villagers lives at the moment. I’ve written elsewhere in this issue Brenda about the dogs, but issues with motorcycles, including those awful sounding mini ones, seem to be pretty prevalent of late. We’ve received complaints about them using the footpath down the back of (Minster Window Company) Heronsbrook, plus they are regularly to be seen in the Rec, whilst Property Maintenance more recently we’ve heard of problems in both the Augustine Road Eve and Butts Field estate areas, and we’ve also encountered them along Building Work Marsh Farm Road. Just what we can do about them I don’t know, Plastering * Rendering however reporting them to our local bobbies seems as good a place as any to start, they have confiscated motorbikes previously and I’m uPVC Windows & Doors sure they will do so again, if they have enough evidence to pinpoint uPVC Fascia, Soffits & Guttering Diane particular individuals. If you can’t get them on the phone then leave a Repairs to existing double glazing note for them at the library where they have a mailbox that they check Misted up sealed units replaced regularly. Garage Doors * Decking I can now tell you that Minster Matters was nominated for a Queens Award for Voluntary Services (aka MBE for Voluntary Nora Groups) this year, but sadly we were not one of the 130/410 chosen Call on for that honour, nevertheless we would like to say a very special thank you to those of you who put in all the effort to submit the nomination and accompanying literature, your efforts are very much appreciated by the whole team and even though we didn’t make the final awards 2P/6 Sue we are grateful to you for believing we were worthy of such an acclaim, it makes our efforts in producing the magazine seem so worthwhile A.J.Cliffe & Sons when people are so generous of their time to do something like that. (Butchers) Ltd We have at long last got the keys to ‘our office’ so now it’s a case of getting ourselves setup and ready to welcome you to our opening. We are still awaiting Best Wishes delivery of the braille embosser and we have quite a lot of work to do before we to ‘The Show’ can open our doors to the public, but as soon as that is possible we will be announcing a date for you to come along and see what we have to offer and Don’t Forget Our maybe partake of a bit of light refreshment with us. As we don’t yet know when NEW BBQ PACKS this will be (not too far off we hope) we will be announcing a date via posters around the village and a message on our website, so please keep your eyes open Canterbury House, Monkton Road, Minster and come along and say hello on the day. Tel: 01843 821288 1L/1 Don’t forget if you’re coming to ‘The Show’ on 23rd July then stop by at our gazebo (we’ll be just outside the entrance to the marquee) and say hello, we’d love to hear your views and ideas, so that’s the day when you can tell us all the home truths about our efforts. Finally I have a personal plea to make, for something I’ve been cajoled into taking part in. I am in need of borrowing a bowler hat just for a day, actually 31st July, when I can be seen taking part in the ‘fashion show’ at the Salvation Army, where Cynthia Neville and myself are www.minstersalon.com hopefully parading as Laurel and Hardy with clothing from 61, High St the shop, but I don’t have a hat. If anyone can help please off with our Minster contact me on 822322 or email me at ray.owen@gmail.com I promise to look after it very carefully and I will return Tel: Junior Stylist it just as soon as I can afterwards. on production of this advert Well space has beaten me yet again, just enough left to 824000 2L/8 ask the usual question - ‘Where’s Zac’ ?

During the first quarter of this year a total 384 appointments were lost because patients failed to attend or did not cancel their appointment. YES! 384! Ironman Challengers Fund Raise for QEQM Hospital Friends Last year they ran the Paris Marathon for the League of Friends. This year three consultant surgeons from QEQM Hospital are undertaking a greater challenge and are seeking sponsorship to raise funds for their hospital. Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeons Andrew Smith and Richard Slack have entered the Ironman competition in Nice, France and will face their challenge on Sunday June 26th. The day starts at 7am with a 3.km (2.4 mile) open water swim in the Baie des Anges. Then they get on their bikes for a 180 km (112 mile) Andrew Richard cycle ride in the hilly terrain surrounding Nice and then finish by running a full marathon course of 42.2 km (26 miles) on the Nice seafront finishing on the famous Promenade des Anglais. Consultant Gynaecologist Obstetrician Zoe Woodward is competing at Regensburg in Germany on Sunday August 7th. Her day will start with a swim in the “Guggenberger See”, followed by a 180 km (112 mile) bike course through the Bavarian Forest National Park and finishing with a marathon run through the historical city centre of Regensburg. Such heroic efforts deserve your support. If you would like to sponsor Zoe, Andrew and Richard you can go on line Zoe to www.justgiving.com/qeqmhospital-lof or use the new JustTextGiving by texting the message QEQM20 to 70070 or by phoning 234507 and asking for a sponsor form. Adding Giftaid where applicable adds extra funds to the donations and won’t cost you a penny more. League of Friends chairman Jeremy Voizey welcomed the news that Zoe, Andrew and Richard are undertaking such a mammoth challenge to raise funds. The League of Friends gave £101,000 to QEQM Hospital last year, including small items like courtesy toiletry packs for emergency admissions, armchairs, wheelchairs, physiotherapy equipment and major items of equipment such as a bladder scanner for A&E costing £8,625. Fundraising is non stop so the League can continue to support the QEQM Hospital.

Thanks to those of you who braved the weather for Fun Day. Those who were there enjoyed themselves, but luckily the expected French contingent must have seen the weather forecast and changed their minds, as we are not sure how we would have entertained them for the day. Great Expectations almost became Bleak House entirely due to the weather. Just think how good it would have been had we had the weather of the preceding Saturday! Thanks to Vicki and her staff for the yummy catering that at least kept the helpers and performers going. Credit must also go to the Royal British Legion who provided the bar. A lot of hard work went into the preparation let alone the set up and purchase and sale of food and drinks. Well done to those few who used the bouncy castle! Our congratulations go to all the musicians who provided excellent entertainment, and thanks to their fans both old and new who supported them. Tribute is due to Paul Cornwall for all his help and his performance as 4th Street. Luke, another soloist was well received by his fans. Jakadam, a group of local young boys and girls performed very well. Local, young, up and coming band The Quirks were also well supported by their fans in the rain. Peter Alan & Son sung their songs successfully. Crash Gate 28 were the last to perform and thus it was to an even more depleted audience, but that did not daunt their show. If you want to see more of these excellent musicians it is hoped that they will be performing at the Flower Show when you will have another opportunity to applaud their skills. And finally in this section thanks to the PA system without whom nobody would have heard the delightful sounds. Gratitude is sent to all stall holders, helpers and villagers. Have you got your last minute tickets for the trip to France on 26th June yet? Better hurry! The coach and ferry have been booked and you can apply now and pay in full at £20 per person, or pay a deposit, with the balance to pay on board the coach. Departure time is 6.45am from The Gossip Shop with return anticipated at about 9.00pm.

Your Letters ...... Heronsbrook Pathways Having read the June edition I feel there are a few comments that I need to make, especially in regard to the pathways bounding the Heronsbrook development. As the footpath runs across my land, I am aware that there has been some fly-tipping and some possibly by the residents that back onto it. However, residents’ dogs alone could not possibly leave the amount of mess that is left in the path. More importantly, it is none of the residents of Heronsbrook that are making a nuisance of themselves by riding motorbikes along the footpath. Note: it is a footpath. We newcomers also take pride in this lovely village, perhaps some of the other residents should as well! Yours sincerely, (name and address withheld) Non-Resident Surgery Patients I was amazed and angry to read the article by the Patients Liaison Group (in the last edition of the Minster Matters), that patients are registered in Minster from as far away as Birchington and Westgate. Birchington and Westgate obviously have their own surgeries. The situation is ridiculous when I hear of Minster residents not being able to get appointments. I can understand Acol, Cliffsend and probably St Nicholas, but Birchington and Westgate? It should never be allowed. From a concerned resident (name and address withheld) Knitters Requested Last year many ladies of both Minster and Thanet knitted vests for orphaned babies. If you would like to help again, this time it can be any type of garment but NO Vests, I would like to hear from you. Garments must be in by end of July, sorry for such short notice, but I have only just received the date. I have a small amount of wool available. Gwen, 821221. Respectful Residents We are constantly receiving reports about dog fouling and anti-social behaviour in and around our village and we don’t want to continually bore our readers with the same old gripes and moans, but dog fouling is becoming quite an issue especially in the areas of the Recreation Ground, Marsh Farm Road, Sheriffs Court Lane, the Cemetery and just about all the alleyways and public footpaths in the village. If you own a dog, then you have a moral and possibly a legal duty to clean up after it. You never see dogs running loose on their own. They always have an owner close by so cleaning up shouldn’t be an issue. Durlock Lodge We have it on good authority that the Parish Council are looking at installing more dog bins Durlock, Minster, Thanet, but the fact that if there mightn’t be bins in the area where you walk your dog, this is no excuse Kent CT12 4HD not to ‘pick up’ and take it with you. You can always deposit it in a normal litter bin, however Phone 01843 821219 don’t hang it in a tree or a hedge or even, as we’ve been told, throw it over someone else’s 18th Century garden wall just to save you the effort of carrying it too far. It is the few who give a bad name quality & character to the many and as we’ve said numerous times before we will report anyone we see failing to Guest rooms do the right thing. from £62 per night Also whilst mentioning the Cemetery not only shouldn’t it be used for a dog toilet area but Self Catering it also isn’t somewhere to take the kids to play football, there is ample space in the Rec for that. It is sacrilegious to play amongst and across the graves more especially so by adults who really from £200 per week should be more respectful and certainly should know better. If you’re the culprit who was seen Discounts for longer stays. and you are reading this then shame on you. www.durlocklodge.co.uk Ray Editor 1P/6

Thank you’s and messages.... Friends of St. Nicholas-at-Wade Church would like to say THANK YOU to…… all those who came to support the St. Nicholas-at-Wade Open Gardens on 4th and 5th June. The Saturday was superb, with lots of visitors enjoying the gardens, the flowers in church, the art work, cream teas and ploughmans’ lunches in lovely sunshine. However, the Sunday was cold and wet, and though there were a few stalwart visitors, numbers were well down on the previous day. In spite of the disappointing day on Sunday, we managed to raise just under £9,000, which will be used to improve the St. Nicholas Church Lighting. Thank you to all those who helped to make it such an enjoyable and successful event. Tessa Tapp

Only half way through June and already it has been a busy month for Minster in Thanet's W.I. Saturday 11th June saw another successful Garden morning which was held in Don and Anne Wilks' beautiful garden. Not only did those running the stalls but visitors too had the chance to view all the wonderful plants, vegetables and caterpillars that Don and Ann nurture so carefully. Plans are underfoot for the Minster Show and W.I. Members will be running the very popular cakes and preserves stall. There is even talk of an entry in the parade by the W.I. The June meeting started with a rousing rendition of 'Jerusalem'. This was followed by a comprehensive talk from Jennifer Smith and Frank Batt fromThe Ramsgate Society which was both interesting and detailed. Several questions from the floor were taken and Members went home with a new understanding of the 'Blue Plaque Scheme' in Ramsgate. If you would like to join us the next meeting is to be held on 12th July at 7.30pm Minster Village Hall. Coffee and Chat Thursday 21st July 10-12 also at the Village Hall. All members and visitors welcome.

At the local Corps we look forward to the main event in the 125th anniversary year of the Salvation Army coming to the village. This will take place on Sunday 31st July. We would like to welcome as many people from the village as can come to one or all of the events. The day commences at 11 am when Captains Bryn and Lynda Hargreaves, who come to us after seven years at Gillingham, are installed as the new Corps Officers. At 1 pm there is a free, yes, free lunch. During the afternoon Chris Randall will play the organ and there will be a performance by a guest harpist. Face painting, a helium balloon race, a tots corner, a teddy bear's picnic, with a prize for the best dressed teddy ( only teddies not other animals), a prize for the best decorated cycle (adults and children's classes) are scheduled. The 'Keep Fit Group' will be taking part and there is a fashion parade of clothes from the Community shop( you do not have to work there to take part). There is also a display of old photographs. At 3.30 pm a free tea will be followed by the prize giving, including the poetry competition result. The final event of the day is a 'Songs of Praise' at 4.30pm led by the new Corps Officers. MINSTER PARISH COUNCIL - HIGHWAYS ACTION TEAM (HAT) RURAL SPEED WATCH

The team have recently carried out checks in the Tothill Street area and we are pleased to report that the majority of vehicles were being driven with care and consideration, whilst also adhering to the 30mph limit. However, as usual, a minority of drivers weren’t quite so considerate and were exceeding the speed limit, some quite excessively. Also being monitored was the wearing of seat belts and the use of mobile phones whilst driving. The latter, unfortunately seemed to be quite prevalent in the village. All instances were recorded and the information supplied to Kent Police who will take the necessary action. On one occasion we were delighted to have the assistance of PC’s Kim Burgess and Darren Reed and we thank them for their support and guidance. The sole aim of Rural Speed Watch is to keep our village safe for all those who live and work here, whilst also to encouraging safer and more considerate driving. For further information contact the Parish Office (821339) or email: kenself014@btinternet.com

On Saturday 11th June 2011 a team of Y3s 4s 5s & 6s (from the local Primary School) went to Palm Bay Primary School to do a race across the schools playing field. In Y3 we had: Lucy Ward, Gabby Elks and Molly Nell for the girls with Jack Yardly and Archie Cotton for the boys. In Y4 we had Maisie Macartney, Hannah Prentis and Isabelle Quarrington for the girls. In Y5 we had Georgia Elks and Emily Giardina for the girls and Calum Dawson for the boys. In Y6 we had Oscar Macartney and George Cannon for the boys. By Maisie Macartney

The year six production. Come to the year six production at the hall. There is singing, dancing and acting to get involved in. Your view of the past will never be the same as you delve deep into the danger and sadness of the blitz on a breathtaking journey into the past with some characters from the war, like Potato Pete. by Oscar Macartney

Year six! Year six is the best year of primary school, even though it is the last year! In year six there are so many fun activities such as hind leap, leavers service, the year six production and many other things! Even homework is made fun in your last year, and it is the best send off! We even get our own roller skating disco! by Kathryn Goldfinch

Underwater World It’s in Hastings and it is very cool and fishy. Tidal rock pools, sandy seabed’s and seaside touch pools let visitors get close to the marine inhabitants at underwater world. Visitors can walk through a glass tunnel beneath a reef pool that is home to a multitude of sharks, rays, crabs and starfish. By Annabelle Fleming. A Beautiful Lie This book is about a boy called Bilal who doesn’t want his poorly dad to find out about the partition because he loves his India. So why is it called a beautiful lie ? Bilal and his friends Chota, Sallem and Manjeet help him to publish a false newspaper so they can trick his father into not knowing about the partition. It is a great book by Ifran Master 10/10. by Richard Hulks

Build a Bear Ville is a fun place to go. You can create a bear and pick clothes out for your bear. You can give your bear a noise and a magnet in its paws. You can put red white and pink hearts in your bears tummy to make it feel loved. You choose the bear you would like and then you can stuff up your bear. by Annabelle Fleming

French Exchange Last week year five had a French exchange program; some of us went to France while some of us stayed in England. The people who stayed here! The first day we were learning about the evacuees in the Second World War! We researched using the computers and books, some of the facts we learnt were interesting such as: they carried a box with a gas mask so that the Germans could not send gases into the air to kill us! The second day they were luckily enough they got to The partition is where India and Pakistan were make three croissants each for themselves and they were delicious! fighting over religion. by Emily Giardina and Michaela Hockley
