The small island of Bali has nestled itself safely inside my heart in a way that no other place could. After living in Bali and returning to South Africa, we desired to find a space to settle that would set our spirits alive in the same way that the small island had done. This is when we decided to move to the South Coast. We had already decided before we had even left Bali.
At the end of the day, people don't travel to Bali to take photos on swings overlooking the rice fields or swim beneath turquoise waterfalls, eat tropical food and drink coffee made by the Balinese, or visit monkeys in some of the richest jungles on the equator. Bali is filled with digital nomads, people who work from a space of freedom and who choose to explore the world whilst creating and offering up their services online.
Bali has its own unique energetic signature, one that cannot be matched by any other space. Its lush jungles sit on the equator, which makes it the perfect space for growing rice and tropical fruits. It has two seasons: rainy and not-so-rainy. Africa, on the other hand, has one of the richest and most powerful
energetic signatures I have felt. There is a deep presence and spirit that resounds beneath the earth, some even say it was the birthing space of mankind. It is a space of fire and deep transformation – and our winters on the Highveld can attest to that. The South Coast, on the other hand, carries a rich balance of both these signatures of Bali and Africa. There is a sacred and quiet fire within the winter – the land dries and the trees shed partially for winter. It is gentle and subtle, yet still as powerful. Bali is indeed a space of great spiritual connection, but it cannot be matched by the power that is held within Africa, particularly within the South Coast of KZN.
For those who are looking for a physical comparison – yes, the South Coast has always reminded me of Bali. It is wild, free and pristine in every sense of the word. There is an organic opulence that permeates the space, with wild rivers, forested belts, mountainous spaces, and an ocean that comes alive no matter the season. The natural surroundings instil a sense of calm and peace, which is why so many travellers choose the South Coast for summer and winter vacations.
Whether you are travelling for the warm summers settled on the beach, a spring hike near Oribi Gorge, or a season of whale and sardine watching in the winter, every season is eclipsed by a unique kind of beauty that cannot be replicated anywhere else across South Africa. This was the first thing we fell in love with and the first reason why we moved here. We loved to be beside the natural streams, to see the sun hit the gossamer wings of the dragonfly as it settled upon a lily pad, to see the natural glow of a firefly beside the river at night (yes, it happens, we have already experienced this within our garden). By gazing at the South Coast with new lenses, you may begin to feel that the magic is abundant and larger than anything you previously dared to dream would be possible. It all starts with a shift in perspective and a deep appreciation for the natural beauty that eclipses our coastlines.
Ever dreamed of walking down the winding pathways of Monkey Forest before skipping over to the Jatilu with rice fields in Tabanan? Well, on the South Coast you can walk through monkey forest any day, any time. The wild vervet monkeys that are present on the coastline are plentiful. Although it is strongly advised to not feed them in any way, we would like to invite you to settle beneath the trees and simply admire how they approach life. While there, your eyes may even spot a water monitor, the natal water snake, or a blue kingfisher. Oribi Gorge has some of the best hiking trails, allowing visitors to get lost in the flora and fauna for hours on end. Is deep forest vegetation not up your alley? No worries, the south coast is home to many hidden jewels in the form of beaches that are hidden away down side roads, between rocks and amongst quaint little suburbs, five of which are blue flag beaches.
From hand-woven baskets and local items curated by artisans, to indigenous fruits picked by local growers
and displayed in fruit and veggie markets, the south coast brings the natural kingdoms to life and then shares them with all who walk upon her soil. Drawing in tourists from across South Africa, it's easy to see why this rich essence of Africa is celebrated far and wide. Come rain or shine, this rich paradise never fails to deliver. Celebrated for having the warmest winter in Africa, it is a season-by-season haven for digital nomads, families, and solo travellers.
From small boutique hotels to quaint Airbnb's, to restaurants owned by locals – the South Coast offers up some of the best when it comes to food. From burgers to gin, to authentic Italian pasta, ribs and curry - there is something for every taste bud along the South Coast coastline. If you are wanting to experience coffee grown in the humidity and mountains of our very coast, then you are in for a treat.
“A place is less about the place and more about the people” – said every well-versed traveller always. I will always remember that this was the one thing that stood out in Bali – it was the kind, gracious, and loving energy that emanated from the locals that made us feel at home and accepted. The island has always offered itself up for tourism as a space for weary visitors to rest and heal. Over time, I have come to see that the south coast does the same.“ Kerry Killan

Keep an eye out for sightings of moray eels, stingrays, and nudibranchs hiding among the rockyformations.
South African Freedive Champion and Guiness World Record Holder of the longest underwater kiss, Beth Neale, shared some insight on the benefits she's found in the depths of the ocean. “Freediving demands focus and presence. It's a form of moving meditation that cultivates an intimate connection with the marine environment. Not only is it a reminder of our symbiotic relationship with the planet, butitalsohasauniquecapacitytohealbothbody and mind. Diving Conditions: Expect a subtropical climate, characterizedbywarmtemperaturesthroughouttheyear. Thewatertemperaturesrangefromaround19°Cinwinter to 25°C in summer, making it conducive to diving throughout the year. It's no secret that the ocean is salted with therapeutic effects, but diving and scuba enthusiasts know this secret intimately Saltwater, well known for its rejuvenating properties, also has a remarkable ability to alleviate stress and anxiety. It's believed that this is due to the negative ions present in ocean air, which promote feelings of positivityandvitality.Saltwaterimmersionsalsoencourage circulation, reduce inflammation, and boost the immune system.

With an abundance of opportunities to catch a sighting, you're guaranteed to get some viewings when embarking on a coastal marine safari, whether you're the unintentional, dreamy ocean onlooker or the stalwart whale-watcher with binosinhand. So,hereareafewthingstokeepyoureyeoutfor:
Water Spouts: Keep watch for subtle disturbances on the water's surface, indicating the presence of a whale just beneath. These "blows" or exhalations often create small ripples or patches of calm water, providing clues to their whereabouts.
Dorsal Fins: Scan the horizon for the distinctive shape of a whale's dorsal fin breaking through the surface. These fins can vary in size and shape depending onthespecies, butthey'reusuallyvisiblewhenthewhaleswimsnearthesurface.
Tail Flukes: Watch for the telltale sign of a whale diving below the surface, indicated by the upward curve of its tail flukes as it prepares to descend. This fleetingglimpsecanhelpanticipatewherethewhalemightresurface.
Bird Activity: Keep an eye on seabirds such as gulls, terns, or shearwaters, as they often gather around areas where whales are feeding. Their aerial movements and sudden dives can lead you to the presence of feeding whales below.
Whale Sounds: Listen attentively for the haunting melodies of whale songs, which can sometimes be heard underwater or even from the surface on calm days.Thesevocalizationscanprovidefurtherevidenceofnearbywhaleactivity.

Living in a world where constant messages, sounds and demands are flung at us in malls, shops, restaurants and even tours; the overstimulated amongst us seem to be craving experiences that immerse us in quiet, natural spaces with a complete lack of sound and utter solace. I would hazard a biased guess that we, as parents, would crave these silent retreats and experiences most of all. Experiences like silent retreats, quieter hotels (for adults only), and silent walks are becoming more popular and invite the opportunity to really invite quiet into your life, reset and immerse yourself in the surrounding sounds of nature.

The Global Wellness Institute reported that “wellness tourism” is expected to grow more than any other wellness sector, increasing by about 20.9% by 2025 to become a $1.1 billion slice of the economy. The hospitality industry is taking notice and so should we! www.globalwellnessinstitute.org
Wellness tourism is voluntary travel to worldwide destinations for the purpose of promoting health and wellbeing through the nurturing of body, mind and spirit. It refers to travelling for health and wellbeing reasons. The wellness tourism economy includes all expenditures that tourists make during a trip to improve or maintain their wellbeing.
The wellness tourism industry has been revolutionised due to a global surge in interest in fitness, health, wellbeing, and increased consumer disposable income post-Covid leading players in the hospitality sector are capitalising on this trend by catering to conscious consumers.
There is also a global increase in demand for wellness lifestyle habitats and estates, which can be defined as living or vacation spaces that are proactively designed and built to support the holistic health and wellbeing of their residents.
Primary wellness travellers.
These travellers are primarily motivated by wellness to take a trip. Their destination is chosen specifically for its wellness offerings. An example of this type of tourist might be someone who books a retreat at a spa resort
Secondary wellness travellers.
These individuals aim to maintain wellness or engage in wellness activities during any kind of travel. An example would be someone who ensures their hotel has a fitness centre and uses it regularly during their business trips or a traveller who chooses accommodations based on the availability of healthy menu options.
Wellness Tourism and Medical Tourism, Adventure and Eco tourism.
- Wellness tourists travel to improve or maintain their health and quality of life and wellness whilst practicing holism. This is a conscious choice and is different for every traveller.
- Medical tourists travel to receive treatment for a specific diagnosed medical condition and elective surgery.
renowned for its holistic health programs, such as yoga, meditation, and nutritional workshops.- Eco-tourism is considered to be responsible travel to natural areas that conserve the environment and sustain the wellbeing of the local people and the planet. It generally involves interpretation and education. - Adventure tourism is where travellers generally travel to partake in physical, and often physically challenging endeavours, which may include: Climbing / Hiking / Trail Running / Kayaking / Paragliding / Diving / Caving / Cycling.
Wellness Tourism Includes…

The growth and sustainability of wellness tourism and lifestyles.
Leading players in the hospitality sector are capitalising on this trend by catering to conscious consumers. They are incorporating fitness facilities into their hotels and offering amenities like in-room yoga mats. However, it's not just hotels that are adapting to the needs of wellness tourists. Airports around the world are also entering the market, providing travellers with meditation rooms, massage chairs, indoor green spaces, organic and plantbased dining options, and walking tracks.

We look back in gratitude and celebration at all those who have gone before, contributing to the past 24 editions of the Southern Explorer Magazine and Route Guide in collaboration with South Coast Tourism and Investment Enterprises.
Going forward, there will be business opportunities that will enable Small Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMME's) to flourish. Our roads will be upgraded and the expansion of Margate airport would create an aerotropolis where the city will develop around this hub creating more opportunities for hotels, restaurants, shopping facilities and a transportation infrastructure to support inbound tourism. Inbound travel and tourism is a gargantuan driving force for the economy, upskilling and uplifting communities.
Looking forward… editor Debra Robins connected with the new SCTIE Board.
Going forward, what are the key priorities of the SCTIE through 2024 and into 2026?
Destination of choice to attract investment through different sectors with tourism being one of them, in order to grow, transform and diversify the economy
To increase the number of investors and tourists to the district.
How will these priorities positively impact both local and inbound tourism and tourism infrastructure development in the region?
Creating investment opportunities will grow the demand for other activities and support tourism activities –accommodation, restaurants, and activities. Our activities are aimed at growing the overall economy of the KZN South Coast.
It is understood that tourism infrastructure development is vital to growth and sustainability of the tourism industry.
What are the primary tourism infrastructure development objectives moving forward?
Connectivity is important to the growth of the district.
With the mission of SCTIE being to attract investment in different sectors, as well as tourism. We have identified, through the new Board of Directors, catalytic projects that are vital to the Ugu district, being:
- Revitalisation of the Railway Line
- Key Roads Upgrade
- Airport Expansion
- Port and Harbour Development
- Intermodal Transport Facility
And how will these objectives improve the local economy?
The revitalisation and development of the railway track will drive passengers and freight across the district quickly and efficiently. Creating links between Ugu, the Eastern Cape and eThekweni along the coastline, and also linking Harry Gwala and Umgungundlovu, and linking them to a port, small craft harbour or airport.
The Margate Airport expansion into a Regional Airport would create an aerotropolis with facilities like an aviation school, hangars, restaurants, hotel, etc.
Port and Harbour development: to develop Port Edward fishing harbour, Hibberdene commercial port, Port Shepstone small craft harbour and beachfront mixed-use development.
These catalytic projects would create jobs and provide opportunities for local businesses to offer their services.
With the increase in demand, create more jobs and opportunities for SMMEs and tourism to flourish.
What do you believe the major challenges to be in the development of tourism and tourism infrastructure?
Because of the challenges faced during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Tourism sector was one of the hardest-hit sectors. We focus on tourism; and in addition we want to stimulate investment across all sectors in the district.
Red-tape and the different application processes and bylaws required in the local municipalities can also be difficult.
The successful establishment of a one-stop shop in January this year is one of the ways we are hoping to alleviate these challenges. We work closely with the local economic development and planning units of the Local Municipalities.
How do the additional challenges related to the lack of service delivery by municipal infrastructures, in particular roads, affect both tourism and investment?
Service delivery and the condition of municipal
infrastructure are challenges in most municipalities across the country
Our Board of Directors includes the HOD from each of the municipalities - as ex-officio members where matters are raised. We also have channels through the intergovernmental relations structures to actively lobby for support in areas identified as requiring attention.
What is the message the SCTIE board would like to share with our businesses, our community, our youth and most importantly, local and international travellers?
SCTIE is here to assist and grow the economy of the destination, which is the Ugu District, by encouraging and supporting investment across all sectors to be the destination of choice for visitors and investors.
We are committed to working with government and private sector stakeholders to offer quality products and services to all.
