Thursday 25 September
As I write we have just finished Sunday evensong, our first night-time chapel service of the year The candlelit Abbey was incredibly atmospheric, the hymns were sung with gusto and the sermon from Athelstan House was a corker; never has a Headmaster been happier
It has been a jam-packed first quarter of term, with the excitement of a large new intake of September students settling in There has been the usual enthusiasm of novel subjects to try and an ever-growing activity list, with Model United Nations Club proving very popular Our stables also continues to develop, with new horses arriving and more riding lessons available The switch of Round Square activities from Wednesday to Friday afternoon appears to have succeeded, giving more balance to the pupils’ studies
In August we had a significant improvement in all of our results metrics across A-level, GCSE and BTEC, a sign I believe of our continuing focus on academic aspiration for every individual student. Our estates team was also hard at work making our academic environment more comfortable, with new roofs on three buildings and redecoration progressing, although there is still lots to do
Student feedback is also very positive about the arrival of our new chefs Through our student council, food forum, PTA and informal pitch-side chats, we always endeavour to listen and learn If anything is particularly troubling you, please do email me on head@miltonabbey co uk
We will have a sharpened focus on charity, community and Old Miltonian alumni engagement this year, to bring a better sense of belonging to the school The students will decide soon on both their external charity for the year and their fundraising challenges and events With events in mind please take note of dates for the diary this term on page 21 I look forward to seeing you all soon as we charge on into another super year at Milton Abbey School
All the best,
Mr Watson | Headmaster

QWho are you, what do you teach and how long have you been here?
My name is Mr Crane and I teach English As an older school master, I do understand that what is needed from anyone teaching in a boarding school, is a wider set of offerings, and so I am on board to help and assist Mr Lucas with the school play "Private Peaceful" I also assist with girls' hockey although the specialist skills I wisely leave to the specialists, and I am a Resident Tutor in Hambro House I have been at Milton Abbey for 4 weeks now, but this is my second chapter at this fine school, and so I have logged eleven years of service prior, between 1996 and 2007 I am a loyal friend to many and someone who believes in caring for others as a first priority
All the good things in my life happened here I met my wife, Marianne, while I was here I got married while I was here Our daughter, Aimée, was born while we were here and Joel was born shortly after we left for South Africa, and so Milton Abbey is a place filled with so many happy memories of the most significant moments in my life Further to this, teaching allows one so many wonderful moments and the colleagues, parents and pupils of this wonderful school have impacted upon me for good in a myriad of ways, which has contributed to the Simon of 2025, and for these things, I am most sincerely grateful (I always enjoyed it when it snowed during the Carol Service too )
Oh dear This question I really hope my school reports have been lost in the sands of time because I was not a good student I was rather lazy and unmotivated by school, and I regret not taking more initiative, but I was young and didn't really grow up until university. I had two very good English teachers who inspired me to write and I now love to write and am an English teacher and so thank you to Mr Clarence and Mrs Bojé In addition, I am very grateful to Professor Vivienne de Klerk at Rhodes University, who encouraged me to believe in myself, that I could study Literature and that I was worthy to stand alongside the other esteemed students at Rhodes University
Q What advice to you give to our students?
Be kind to everyone Don't allow how others might treat you to change how you treat them You cannot control how others behave towards you, only your reactions to them So be kind, be courteous, be generous, care and invest in others Don't allow them to change you Just continue to be kind to others, always
Q
This is an easy one The book is Lee Child's "The Hard Way" which was my first Jack Reacher novel, given to me by my parents in 2005 I do love the detective novels of Robert B Parker, especially the "Spenser" series The plays are Athol Fugard's "Sizwe Banzi is Dead" and Tom Stoppard's "The Real Inspector Hound " Two classics that I will watch anywhere, anytime The film is Steven Spielberg's 1971 made-for-tv classic "Duel" But not the 1973 release which had three added scenes The original 1971 version that has none of that added content It is just a pure classic No extra details I love this film, and once flew to California to drive the roads used in it I even have a piece of America at home, in the form of a rock that I picked up from Soledad Canyon Road
Q What don’t we know about you?
I have a short story called "Heavy Metal" in circulation I was in a movie with John Cleese in 2010 "Spud: The Movie" features me as Spud's Dad's Driving Double, which might not sound all that impressive, but it gave me two weeks' work on a movie set I got paid a little for this, but I would have done it for free I loved this experience

As a small by choice school, we take time to make sure that every student is known, noticed and nurtured.
With this in mind, we invite all our new students to the Head's study, for a sweet treat and have a chat about how the start of term is going and hear about the activities they have been up to
CAT tests are baseline psychometric assessments aligned with national data They identify individual thinking strengths and weaknesses, helping to predict potential outcomes at GCSE and A Level They guide subject choices by highlighting where pupils may excel and mirror the types of tests used in many corporate recruitment processes, offering useful preparation for life beyond Milton Abbey
Mr Watson consistently encourages our students to challenge themselves, so he joined the Lower Sixth in taking the CAT test to lead by example
