FROM THE STAGE DIRECTOR
In the Heights comes to us as the early work of the amazing Lin Manel Miranda, known to many as the writer and star of the musical Hamilton. Lin wrote In the Heights as a school project and it turned into a Broadway hit. As a show, it’s set in a specific area in New York City, the upper island of Manhattan, with characters not related necessarily by blood, but my home, community, friendship, hopes, and dreams. I think anyone can relate to calling the community and people who surround you as “home”. Though the show’s heart is centered around a specific Latin community, this story will resonate with anyone’s culture: “Family comes first,” although family doesn’t mean the people you are “related to,” but the human beings you call when are you down. These humans remind you that you ARE “Home,” to “Just Breath,” and yes, that you take your coffee with “a little bit of cinnamon!”
As the director of a piece I am so passionate about, I have been honored to share this story with the beautiful people of Salt Lake City. The wonderful people I met here have welcomed me with open arms and showed me the true meaning of acceptance. That’s love!! Beyond that, the cast of characters (meaning the extremely talented actors) on this stage have given their all at every single rehearsal to show SLC the meaning of “FAMILIA!” It’s been an honor being in the same room as each and every one of them.
I hope everyone will be touched with the spirit of In the Heights. That’s your laugh along with this funny cast of characters. You will get emotional, and yes, even dance to this amazing music. Enjoy and “Alabanza!” Oh and “WEPA!!

BUMINGHAM (Ensemble) is thrilled to be making her Grand Theatre debut in In the Heights. She loves the inclusivity and diversity of this story. She is a sophomore at the University of Oklahoma, double majoring in Political Science & Journalism. Previous credits include Anita in West Side Story (Hopebox Theatre), Chiffon in Little Shop of Horrors (West Valley Theatre), and Specs in Newsies (The Terrace).

MASON BURR (Ensemble) marks their first show at the Grand Theatre and also their first show since being put in a wheelchair. In the Heights is one of Mason’s favorite Broadway shows because it portrays a family when a family is needed the most, which is what theatre means to Mason.
ASHLEY COOMBS (Ensemble) broke her multi-year theatre hiatus when she eturned to the stage in 2022 as a featured dancer in Regalo Theater Company’s Shrek the Musical. She is electrified to continue dancing her heart out In the Heights. As a Latina, she is grateful for opportunities to share the beautiful stories of her community. ¡Sí, se puede!
SOPHIA VALDEZ DAVIS
(Camila Rosario) is enlivened to return to the Grand Theatre where she began her acting career with Hello Dolly way back in 1992. After taking 18 years off to raise her 2 kids, she was able to come back for West Valley Performing Arts production of In the Heights and is happy to be able to reprise her role of Camila Rosario at The Grand this spring. Before her break, Sophia had the pleasure of performing for PTC, Salt Lake Acting Company, the Grand Theatre, The Hale Center Theatre, and Sundance Outdoor Theatre.

Audiences may have seen her as Anita in West Side Story, on the Hallmark and Magnolia television networks, or performing at a Utah Jazz game. As a Professor of Performing Arts and Director of the SLCC Dance Company, she also enjoys producing dance concerts and sharing this very stage with dancers of all ages and backgrounds.
ASHER HEAD (Ensemble) is very excited to make his acting debut in the Grande Theatre’s In the Heights production. He loves singing and dancing. Since his last show here, he returned to Utah after living in Orlando where he performed at Seaworld, Disneyworld and was part of the mascot team for Monster Jam. and team. He gained musical experience throughout high school and college and hopes to gain more in the future.
JOSIE MAGUNA (Ensemble) worked several shows at The Grand behind the scenes as an electrician, wardrobe manager, and, most recently, fly rail operator, and is thrilled to be on the front of the stage this time. In the Heights had always been a dream show for Josie, and she is beyond grateful for that dream to have become a reality in the theatre she knows so well.
SOPHIA MORRILL MANCILLA (Vanessa) is a proud Utahn, NYU Tisch grad, and occasional singer/songwriter. Former Mario Kart Wii champion. Thank you for supporting Utah theatre!

SONIA MARITZA INOAROSADO MAUGHAN (Abuela Claudia) #freedomforcuba. Sonia is thrilled to be in her first production at The Grand! Born in Puerto Rico to Dominican & Boricua parents & raised in South Florida, Sonia is deeply honored to play the role of a Cuban immigrant. She grew up with friends who have shared their stories of dreams, hardships & successes in making their way to the states. With great pride and a lot of love in her heart, she will tell their stories through her portrayal of Abuela Claudia. Sonia is overjoyed to be in this show once again (most recently with West Valley Arts) & she is humbled to be able to reprise this beautiful role. She has performed in Miami, Cali, and in local theatres here in Utah. “We are not powerless. We are powerful.”

His most recent roles have been Francis in Forever Plaid and Tom Collins in RENT, both at the Ziegfeld Theatre. He also performs in his band Tides of Autumn as the lead vocalist. But enough about this dingus. Enjoy this show!
ONIAS SNUKA (Benny) reminds us that “it is said when emotion becomes too strong for speech, you sing: and when it becomes too strong for song, you dance.” Onias feels this connection to the production, it’s music, and above all the message of In the Heights that no matter how relatively small or large your dream is, own it. And embrace your roots as you pursue that dream.
