DIRECTOR’S NOTE
Welcome to the 30th anniversary production of 2 Pianos 4 Hands. It’s amazing to think that it’s been that long since Ted Dykstra and Richard Greenblatt wrote this show for themselves in Toronto in the 1990s. At the time, they had no idea how it would be received and were concerned that it would only appeal to other piano nerds. It turns out they needn’t have worried. As of 2025, 2 Pianos 4 Hands is one of the most successful Canadian plays in history, having played to nearly 2 million people in 10 different countries and 200 cities worldwide.
I recently wrote to Richard asking why he thought the show had such staying power. He wrote back: Although most people would describe the show’s journey and its continuing longevity as “successful,” I find it hard to quantify what that means...I think the populist nature of the story is what appeals to so many people. It’s hard to find anybody who didn’t have some kind of dream of greatness in whatever field. And with the unrealized dream that most of us experienced, the question of “what now?” is ubiquitous. Even extremely successful folks have sometimes told me that they actually had a dream of being successful in another field other than the one in which they are “successful.”
What struck me in the (much longer) note he sent, was how many ways he turned around the word “success,” questioning it and redefining it. As I age along with the show, I relate to that more and more. While 2P4H can be hilarious and impressive (we hope), it is also a powerful reminder that we get to decide what success is for each of us individually. It gives us permission to look kindly on the kid inside us that had a dream, no matter what came of it. May it continue doing that for a long time to come.
Tom Frey, Director
ARTISTIC DIRECTOR’S NOTE
Hello Everyone!
I can’t believe that it is already fall and another season is beginning.
While summer is considered our downtime at the theatre, it is hardly quiet—there has been a lot going on preparing for the season. As I write this note, all of the directors and designers for the season have been hired and the design meetings, where we begin to explore what all of these shows will look like and what technical requirements they have, will have already happened. We have completely cast the first three shows of the season, and are building the sets for the first two, while prepping the third. Equipment has been cleaned and repaired, and we even had a new elevator installed in the theatre lobby!
We have a truly exciting season ahead, full of some of our most anticipated works, and I genuinely hope you are planning on joining us for all of it. It is a pleasure, and an honor, to bring this work to you. Thank you for supporting live theatre and Pioneer Theatre Company.
Karen
MANAGING DIRECTOR’S NOTE
Dear Friends and Fellow Theatre Lovers,
Welcome back! There’s nothing quite like the energy of a new season and the joy of gathering together to share stories that move and inspire us. Theatre reminds us that even in a fast-changing world, shared stories have the power to bring us closer, spark new ideas, and open our hearts to possibility.
After reflecting on my first year here at PTC, I am reminded of the profound importance and need for human connection; that’s why I am especially thrilled to welcome you to this incredible season, one that celebrates the joy of coming together and experiencing the magic of live theatre side by side.
To our subscribers: thank you for renewing. Your belief in PTC means the world to us. Subscriptions are more than tickets; they’re a commitment to keeping live theatre vibrant in our community. If you’re enjoying what you see here, I hope you’ll share it with friends, family, and colleagues. A personal invitation from you is one of the most powerful ways we can grow our circle.
We open this season with 2 Pianos 4 Hands—a joyful, funny, and heartfelt celebration of chasing dreams and embracing the beauty of music. It’s the perfect reminder of why we come together in the theatre: to laugh, to reflect, and to connect.
Thank you for being here.
With gratitude,

TED DYKSTRA (Playwright) Ted’s professional career began in Edmonton at age 15. Since then he has gone on to play leading roles on every major stage in Canada, from Hamlet at Theatre Calgary to Scrooge in A Christmas Carol at The Citadel Theatre, and often combining his musical skills in such roles as: Mozart in Amadeus; Cale Blackwell, a character based on Jerry Lee Lewis, in Fire (seven Canadian theatres); Shostakovitch in Master Class (Manitoba Theatre Centre); Glenn Gould in An Evening with Glenn Gould (National Arts Centre), Hedwig in Hedwig and the Angry Inch (Crow’s Theatre); and Cousin Kevin in The Who’s Tommy (Mirvish Productions). School children around the world know him as Bach in the film Bach’s Fight for Freedom. He is a veteran of both the Shaw and Stratford Festivals. As well as directing dozens of award-winning shows across Canada, he has acted in dozens of films and TV shows including The Expanse, Orphan Black and Reign, and has also voiced countless cartoon characters. Currently he is the voice of Dad Tiger on Daniel Tiger’s Neighbourhood (PBS). Currently he is composing music for Dion, a rock opera based on The Bacchae. Ted has received six Dora Mavor Moore Awards, as well as Gemini, Merritt, Sterling, and Chalmers Awards, and has oodles of award nominations for acting, directing, composing, writing, and producing. FOR YOUR INFORMATION
Emergency Exits are indicated to your right and left in the theatre. Please identify the exit closest to your seat location in case an emergency occurs.
Videotaping, photographing, or other video or audio recording of this production is strictly prohibited. This includes photos taken by phone.
SMART WATCHES, CELL PHONES, AND CAMERAS ARE DISRUPTIVE; even when set on silent or vibrate, they may disrupt wireless sound equipment. Please leave your electronics in the car, or turn them off entirely while in the theatre.
TEXTING is disturbing to the actors and your fellow audience members. Do not text during the performance.
If you might need to be reached during a performance, leave your exact seat location with the box office. The number for emergency calls is 801-581-6963.
We have a hearing assistance system that allows our hard-of-hearing patrons to sit in any seat in the house. Collateral required; inquire at coat check.
We welcome all persons. Those with special requirements should request assistance in advance. Refreshments are not permitted in the auditorium, but are available in the main floor lobby pre-show, and during intermission. Bottled water and approved PTC drink
containers are allowed in the theatre.
University of Utah is a non-smoking campus, both inside and outside all buildings.
Evening performances are at 7:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday; Saturday matinees at 2 :00 p.m. Please avoid arriving after curtain time. To avoid disturbing other patrons, latecomers will be seated at the discretion of the House Manager. This policy has been instituted at the request of many of our patrons.
Season ticket holders may exchange their tickets for another performance of the same play by notifying the box office at least 48 hours prior to the performance date. Tickets are non-refundable.
You may donate your tickets, helping yourself and Pioneer Theatre Company. If you are unable to attend a production, make a tax-deductible gift of your tickets to the Theatre so that we may re-sell them. Call the box office at least 48 hours prior to the performance date.
The Patron Services staff will serve you from 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. During the run of a show, the box office is open extended hours Monday through Saturday.
No children under age 5 are admitted to performances.
