SEPTEMBER 11 – OCTOBER 4, 2025

PREVIEW: SEPTEMBER 10 | MAIN STAGE | R

Welcome back for The Grand’s 2025 - 2026 theatrical season! We’re so excited that you could join us once again as we continue to bring you professional-quality theatre, at community theater prices. This year’s season features some great comedy and great drama. The production you’re about to see, THE FULL MONTY, is one of my favorite shows. This is the third time I’ve been able to work on this show, and each time has been more enjoyable than the last. It’s a show with a lot of heart, focusing on friendship, family, and self-acceptance, as well as some fun 1990s nostalgia (for those of us born in the 1900s). We’re thrilled to welcome back Jamie Rocha Allan, who has directed several shows here at The Grand. He has put together a fantastic cast, and our entire production team has done a wonderful job. I sincerely hope you enjoy the show! This year we are also proud to continue our partnership with Excellence in the Community to bring you free community concerts once a month featuring some of Utah’s most talented musicians. We hope you will join us for these free concerts and see just how much amazing talent we have in our great state. Please remember to show your continued support for The Grand by helping us spread the word about our productions and all the incredible local talent they showcase. We would not be able to continue without the ongoing support of patrons like you. Helping spread the word about our shows and events really does make a difference! Thank you, and ENJOY THE SHOW!

The Grand Theatre

FROM THE DRAMATURG

Throwing it back to the ‘90s: Past the boy bands, rollerblades, and beanie babies, our story begins with a less nostalgic reality of the time. While employment with the American Iron and Steel Institute peaked in 1953, by the mid 1980s it decreased by more than 60% and would continue to decline for decades. By the mid 1990s, it was clear the end was near, but it was too expensive to just shut everything down all at once - pensions had to be paid. What was once an environment of rapid growth and possibility became a negative environment where the inevitable was clear to all. Besides the obvious impacts of income loss, this type of displacement also increased anxiety, depression, feelings of isolation, and decreased self-worth.

As the workers grapple with their new status as failures in the eyes of their community and loved ones, they uncover deeper issues within themselves that often go unaddressed for men. We see how physical appearance is a large contributor in their self-worth. Even though Harold states that regardless of weight, everyone is beautiful, he immediately admits that he doesn’t actually believe that himself, and doesn’t know anyone who does. He, like the rest of the guys, see being fat and wrinkled as a personal failure. There is a real fear, universally experienced, of failing to meet society’s expectations of beauty that influences how they hold themselves and each other to these unrealistic standards. Poor self-image contributes to their inability to feel worthy to be seen as masculine, lovable, desirable… and worth seeing naked.

More than thirty years later, these are questions that human beings of all genders still ask themselves today. And much like the boys of Hot Metal, when we’re able to muster the courage to find self-acceptance, we also find strength in our vulnerability, power in friendship, and that worthiness we all deserve.
