F ROM T H E C E O & A RT I S T IC DI R E CTOR Welcome to Madame Butterfly and Ballet West’s 53rd Season.

For our first main-stage program of the season, I have chosen to revive Stanton Welch’s exquisite ballet version of one of the world’s most beloved operas. The Ballet West premiere of this Madame Butterfly was part of the first season I personally programmed back in February of 2009, and I have had numerous requests to bring it back ever since. From its opulent sets and costumes and the glorious score by Giacomo Puccini arranged without voices, this heartbreaking tale of love and betrayal is haunting, exciting, exotic and deeply theatrical, filled with beautiful dancing and music. It is to me, a perfect theater experience.

We have also been invited to represent American ballet at the Festival Internacional de Ballet in Havana, Cuba, becoming one of the first American companies invited to perform there since relations have changed. So, a handful of dancers and staff will be traveling down to Cuba to represent Utah and the United States. It is quite an honor!

In December, we bid farewell to our current sets and costumes for Willam Christensen’s incomparable, The Nutcracker. This makes the way for exciting new sets and costumes which will premiere in December of 2017. It is important to remember that during his lifetime, Mr. C changed his Nutcracker sets and costumes four times. As always, I intend to honor his vision and respect his wonderful choreography.

Ballet West is on strong footing these days as an organization. We have a stellar team from our artists to staff, orchestra and crew. It was for these reasons that I have agreed to take on the joint position of CEO & Artistic Director. The one promise I will continue to give you is our commitment to you, our patrons. We remain dedicated to giving everyone from all walks of life in our community a meaningful theatrical experience every time you join us for a performance. Adam Sklute Since 2007, Adam Sklute has expanded Ballet West’s outlook, repertoire, and visibility with exciting Company premieres, increased touring, heightened public exposure, and greater focus on the Ballet West Academy. He began his career with The Joffrey Ballet, where he was a Soloist before rising through the ranks to Associate Director.

His stewardship of Ballet West, marked by both bottom line growth and elevated artistry, has been heralded by many publications, and was the subject of The CW Network’s docu-drama, Breaking Pointe, which aired for two seasons. This year, Adam was promoted to the position of CEO and Artistic Director where he will also oversee the administrative operations of the Company.

SYNOPSIS Prologue Cio-Cio San, a geisha known as Madame Butterfly, dreams of her future.

Act I On a hill overlooking the harbor, a wedding is about to take place between Lieutenant Pinkerton, a U.S. Naval officer, and Butterfly, with whom he has contracted a Japanese marriage. Goro, the obsequious marriage broker and general factotum, shows Pinkerton the house he will share with his young bride, and introduces him to the servants and Suzuki, Butterfly’s personal maid.

The first visitor to arrive is Sharpless, U.S. Consul at Nagasaki. Together, with Goro, they toast Pinkerton’s marriage arrangements. Sharpless, however, is deeply disturbed by the frivolous levity with which Pinkerton regards this marriage and utters a grave warning; not to break a trusting and devoting heart. He hands him a letter from Kate, Pinkerton’s betrothed, who waits for him back home in America. While Pinkerton must travel overseas to fulfill his career, he vows that on day he will marry his American girl.

The bridal party arrives and with much formality, Butterfly is introduced to the two Americans. They discover that she has been forced to become a geisha because of the dire poverty her once wealthy family fell into after her father committed ritual suicide. She is 15 years old.

Butterfly sets up a shrine and places her valuables gently upon it – including the sacred sword her father used to kill himself- and shyly shows them to Pinkerton. Confidingly, she tells Pinkerton that she has visited a U.S. Missionary and has become a Christian so that she may worship the same God as her husband. The brief marriage ceremony is carried out and, afterward, Sharpless warns Pinkerton to be sensible.

The wedding celebration is in full-swing and Pinkerton encourages Butterfly’s family to eat and drink, hoping this will hasten their departure. Suddenly, Butterfly’s uncle, The Bonze, bursts into the happy scene. He has learned of Butterfly’s visits to the U.S. Missionary, and in a rage, now denounces her for rejecting the faith of her fathers. An uproar ensues, and the relatives depart cursing.

Tenderly, Pinkerton consoles his weeping wife. Slowly, she abandons her innocence, and they lie down beneath the stars.

SYNOPSIS Act II Several years have passed since Pinkerton left Nagasaki. Butterfly is desperately poor and only Suzuki will stay with her. She is convinced that one day her husband will return and brushes aside others’ doubts.

Sharpless and Goro arrive at the house. Goro is anxious to profit from a new match between Butterfly and the wealthy Prince Yamadori, now that the marriage to Pinkerton can be annulled. Sharpless produces a letter he has received from Pinkerton. Butterfly teases Yamadori mercilessly over his passion for her and turns down his marriage proposal. Ignoring Japanese tradition Butterfly maintains her vow to Pinkerton. Prince Yamadori leaves, followed by a furious Goro, who finally wipes his hands clean of Butterfly.

Sharpless hands the letter to Butterfly, but she is too excited and begs him to read it to her. Knowing the letter’s fatal contents, he hesitates and inquires what Butterfly’s future would hold if Pinkerton were never to return. Horrified at the suggestion, she fetches their son and triumphantly shows him to the Consul. Instead of the truth, Sharpless tells her that the letter has no sad news and promises to tell Pinkerton about his son.

Goro has been spying on the household and upon Sharpless’s exit, attacks the family saying that a fatherless half-breed child is considered an outcast in Japan. Butterfly is outraged and chases him away.

A cannon shot is heard from the harbor announcing the arrival of a ship. Butterfly, watching from the terrace, recognizes Pinkerton’s ship; he has finally come back to her. She sends Suzuki to pluck flowers from the garden and they set about adorning themselves and the house. As evening falls, she makes several holes in the paper wall so they can watch for Pinkerton’s arrival. She dreams of his return, and of her and her son’s acceptance, wealth, and happiness in America- their new home.

As dawn breaks, the dream is shattered. Suzuki wakes up and urges her weary mistress to retire.

Suddenly, Pinkerton, Sharpless, and Kate arrive at the door. The have come early in the morning with hopes of finding Suzuki alone, and of enlisting her support to persuade Butterfly to accept Kate’s offer to adopt the child. For Pinkerton, the house is full of poignant memories. Overcome by remorse, he decides to leave without seeing Butterfly. Butterfly awakens and notices his departure; alarmed she questions Suzuki. Suzuki’s sobbing and Sharpless’s silence, coupled with the presence of Kate, make her gradually realize the awful truth. With her heart broken, Butterfly agrees to relinquish her son to Pinkerton and his new wife.

Sharpless, Kate, and the boy leave, and Butterfly collapses in desperation. She orders Suzuki away, who rushes after Sharpless for help. Butterfly lifts her father’s sword, reading its inscription “to die with honor when one can no longer live with honor.”

THE ADAPTATION FROM OPERA

One of the first reasons I fell in love with Stanton Welch’s Madame Butterfly is that it is the physical embodiment of the opera. But in the opera, a soprano doesn’t look like a 15-year old geisha, whereas, in the ballet, our dancers can look young. I think portraying her (Cio Cio San) as the story depicts makes it all the more heartbreaking and intense.

THE MUSIC

The music is gorgeous. This was one of John Lanchbery’s final ballet adaptations. He is responsible for adapting Don Quixote, La Bayadere, and so many others; Madame Butterfly fully exposes his talents. He used all the music, and was dedicated to honoring every note of Puccini’s luscious score, as it adds so much to the entire production.

THE CHARACTERS

All of the characters are unique and different in Madame Butterfly. Sure, there are Cio-Cio San, Pinkerton, and Kate, but there is a whole world that Stanton develops on stage. We have more than 50 cast members in the production, and each of them has a story. Each person is producing a character, which brings the entire production to life in magical and meaningful ways.

THE TECHNIQUE

The end of Act I is Cio-Cio San’s and Pinkerton’s wedding night. On top of being very romantic and sensual, it is also one of the hardest pas de deux that I have ever worked with in terms of its requirements for technique and partnering. The entire ballet is very demanding, and the rehearsal process requires weeks of analytical movements in order to put it all together.

THE LOVE

It’s just one of my favorite works. I laugh, I cry, and I still have a thoroughly enjoyable experience at every performance. There are comedic moments, there are passionate, heartwarming moments, and then there are moments that will destroy you emotionally. I believe this is what we want from theater—we want to be emotionally engaged, and in Madame Butterfly, I find myself completely caught-up in the moment from beginning to end.

Adam said he also gets a kick seeing the ballet from backstage. “It is organized pandemonium. The Capitol Theater has small wings, and while there are these elegant scenes on stage, from the wings it is chaos, with costumes being ripped off, mustaches being glued on, shoes being changed, and on and on. Onstage and in the wings—it is an incredible energy.”

CEO and Artistic Director Adam Sklute with Houston Ballet Artistic Director Stanton Welch AM Houston Ballet Artistic Director Stanton Welch has choreographed more than 34 new works in the past 35 years. Recently, CEO and Artistic Director Adam Sklute sat down with Welch to discuss his seminal work, Madame Butterfly, along with his love of storytelling.

What was it about this particular opera that inspired you to make a ballet out of it?

It was one of the first operas I had ever watched and it became a story like Cinderella, or Romeo and Juliet—it is so well-known internationally and I was amazed that no one had tackled it as a ballet before. It was a simple set, it was only two acts, it was in a solitary location, and by using some flashbacks, it really lent itself very well to a story ballet.

You worked with the great composer, conductor, and arranger, John Lanchbery, can you tell me what that was like?

While I was contemplating doing this ballet I met Jack (John Lanchbery) and I had heard that he too was interested in doing a Madame Butterfly ballet. I was still dancing in Australia then, and I was younger and more brave and I just went up and simply asked him if he’d like to do the ballet together.

We spent years discussing it and through all of our work together, he became an incredible mentor. continued on page 28

I N F O C U S: M A DA M E B U T T E R F LY A CONVERSATION BETWEEN DIRECTORS (CONTINUED) I spent a lot of time in England working on the score with Jack and I would say that even today, no one comes close to his body of work, he had an incredible life-long appreciation of music. That was in the last eight years of his life and he was just as quick and talented as he had been throughout his career.

Did you feel pressure in recreating a well-known opera into a ballet?

I tried to stick pretty closely to the story and I think this story in-particular works very well for ballet.

In fact, there are some ways this story works better as a ballet than an opera. For instance, Butterfly is supposed to be 14-years old, and it’s very hard to find a singer that looks that young. You have to suspend your belief when you are watching the opera. The strength of dance is we can transport you completely into that world.

I’d also say, most people who watch the opera don’t speak Italian, so they are understanding the story by listening to the emotions communicated through the music. The beauty of Puccini’s music is that it tells the story so well that you don’t need to know all the things being said. I think that John did an incredible job of removing the arias and replacing the sound of the voice with instruments so that the emotions are there, but the voice is not.

You’ve staged this ballet around the world, how do you bring out the emotions of the dancer’s you work with?

In today’s world, the standards for professional dancers is very high, so I’m rarely needing to correct technique. I think it has more to do with being honest as a dancer. I took acting classes, and it’s just as difficult as dancing. A dancer is given these huge roles in story ballets and they’ve rarely discussed the character, and usually have no background in acting. So, in Madame Butterfly dancers must realize that practicing the emotions of acting is just as important as the physical stretching and jumping.

Sometimes, a dancer will say, “Oh, I’ll just do it on stage.” But this is an ensemble ballet, there are six main characters, so their tone must reflect off of one another. You can’t just get to the theater and hope that your fellow dancers’ tone will match one another. They must feel the oppression and devastation together and they have to have a safe place in the studio so they can practice exposing their soul.

One final question, what is the thing you have loved most about being a choreographer?

It’s storytelling. That is what drew me into being a dancer, and then a choreographer. It has always been the same enticement. I wanted to tell stories and initially it was through acting and then writing, and then I switched to dance. I’m not someone who could be just a dancer, I need to be involved in the creation of stories. Even when the ballet does not tell a story, it’s like looking at an abstract painting, you should be impacted somehow, if it is rage, excitement, being scared, or moved. For me, nothing is more satisfying than watching people cry at the end of Butterfly, because it means the story is still current today. The devastation people can cause, the effects we have on one another, it is a story we still need to learn today.

CHOREOGRAPHER AND COMPOSER Stanton Welch, A.M. CHOREOGRAPHER, MADAME BUTTERFLY

Stanton Welch is one of the most sought after choreographers of his generation, having created works for the world’s leading ballet companies. Welch was born in Melbourne to Marilyn Jones, O.B.E., and Garth Welch, A.M., two of Australia’s most gifted dancers of the 1960s and 1970s. In 1986 he began his training at the late age of seventeen, quickly winning a scholarship to San Francisco Ballet School. In 1989 he became a dancer with The Australian Ballet, where he rose to the rank of leading soloist. Welch’s choreographic career developed during his time with The Australian Ballet. In 1990 he received his first choreographic commission from the company, marking the beginning of a series of commissioned works over the next fourteen years and developing his diverse choreographic style. For The Australian Ballet he has created notable works such as Of Blessed Memory (1991), for which he was voted best new choreographer in 1992 by readers of the British magazine Dance & Dancers; Divergence (1994), which has been performed at The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. and City Center in New York; full-length productions of Madame Butterfly (1995) and Cinderella (1997); and a new Sleeping Beauty which premiere in September 2005. In 1995, Welch was named resident choreographer of The Australian Ballet, a position he held for eight years. In July 2003, he assumed the leadership of Houston Ballet as Artistic Director. Madame Butterfly has become a signature work for Welch worldwide and is in the repertoires of Houston Ballet, The National Ballet of Canada, Atlanta Ballet, Singapore Dance Theatre, Boston Ballet, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, The Royal New Zealand Ballet, and Ballet West.

Giacomo Puccini COMPOSER, MADAME BUTTERFLY

Italian composer Giacomo Puccini created some of the world’s best-loved operas. His marvelous sense of theater has given his operas lasting appeal, and his works remain among the most frequently performed in the standard repertoire today. He was born in Tuscany in 1858, into a family with five generations of musical history behind them. He enjoyed his first successful opera shortly after his graduation from Milan University. In 1893, he became known throughout Italy for his opera Manon Lescaut; after 1896, he was wealthy and world-famous from the enormous success of La Bohème. Tosca (1900) and Madame Butterfly (1904) were also very popular. He died in 1924 before finishing his last opera, Turandot, which was completed by a friend, Franco Alfano, based on the composer’s sketches.

John Lanchbery arranged scores for many ballet productions, including Ben Stevenson’s stagings for Peer Gynt, Dracula, The Snow Maiden, and Cleopatra; and Ronald Hynd’s stagings of The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Papillon. He also collaborated with Houston Ballet Artistic Director Stanton Welch on two productions for The Australian Ballet: Madame Butterfly in 1995 and Cinderella in 1997. Born in London in 1923, Mr. Lanchbery was appointed musical director of Metropolitan Ballet in 1947. In 1951, he was named conductor of the Sadler’s Well Theatre Ballet.

Ten years later, he was appointed principal conductor of The Royal Ballet, for whom he arranged many ballet scores. He left The Royal Ballet in 1972 to become music director for The Australian Ballet. In 1976, he returned to The Royal Ballet as guest conductor to conduct his arrangement for the score of Sir Frederick Ashton’s A Month in the Country and later arranged, orchestrated and conducted the score for Sir Kenneth MacMillan’s Mayerling. He died in Australia in 2003. Mr. Lanchbery’s long and distinguished career was marked by many honors, including the Bolshoi Medal, the Queen Elizabeth II Coronation Award from the Royal Academy of Dance, and Officer of the Order of the British Empire for his services to music.

Steven Woodgate STAGING, MADAME BUTTERFLY

Australian Steven Woodgate joined the artistic staff of Houston Ballet in January 2004. In 1985, he graduated from The Australian Ballet School. He performed with The Australian Ballet, progressing through the ranks to senior artist in 1996. In 1988, Mr. Woodgate was presented with the Victorian Green Room Award for best male dancer for his role as Bim in Gaîté Parisienne. He represented Austalia in the International Ballet Competition in Moscow in 1989, where he was awarded the Moscow Music Magazine Award. In 2000, he was awarded The Churchill Fellowship, which enabled him to observe many ballet masters from around the world and study their various teaching methods. As well as performing, Mr. Woodgate has taught both student and professional classes around the world. Mr. Woodgate has reproduced Stanton Welch’s Madame Butterfly for the Singapore Dance Theater, The Royal New Zealand Ballet, The National Ballet of Canada, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, Atlanta Ballet, and Ballet West.

Ballet West principal artists Arolyn Williams and Rex Tilton In Ballet West’s Season Opener Madame Butterfly, Principal Artists Arolyn Williams, Beckanne Sisk, and First Soloist Sayaka Ohtaki will be cast as Cio-Cio San, the ballet’s headlining role. Portraying this emotionally complex character through dance is both difficult and delicate. Here, the three leads discuss their relationship to the ballet and the part.

For Arolyn Williams, the role is especially dear to her. In 2009, it earned her accolades and helped define this unique and fascinating artist. “Steven Woodgate and Stanton Welch were both extremely kind to me, especially as I was so inexperienced. I also couldn’t have been as successful in that role without [now-retired Ballet West Principal Artist] Michael Bearden. He was so patient. We rehearsed the pas de deux on our own over and over again in the studio until it was second nature.

It was so great to get the mechanics down like that because by the time we got onstage, I could just let the character take over, almost like I was along for the ride and she (Cio-Cio San) was driving it.”

Arolyn received national attention from multiple media outlets for her intense and heartbreaking portrayal of the role. A profile in DANCE Magazine raved that she had “musicality, impeccable footwork, and a blissfully light upper body.”

T H E DA N C E R S ’ P E R S P E C T I V E This will be the first time Beckanne Sisk and Sayaka Ohtaki have embodied Cio-Cio San, and while both are excited, they are also humbled to represent a character that audiences around the world know and love. “Personally, the character is opposite from the way I act and think. But, the story is universal, and I’ve also had life experiences that connect me to this character,” said Sayaka, who is from Tokyo, Japan.

“I’ve been in the United States for nine years, and I have to remember to be more low-key in the role. It requires subtlety and a nuanced approach.”

For Beckanne, slipping into Cio-Cio San is an immersive experience. “You have Puccini’s music, Stanton’s choreography, and it surrounds you. The experience is all-encompassing, and once I step on stage I get lost inside the character and story.” Both Beckanne and Sayaka agree the story’s universal human elements help anyone relate to the story. “Everyone will connect to these characters because most people have been in love, felt love, and most of us have experienced the pain and hurt of that emotion,” said Beckanne. Sayaka has one piece of advice for audience members, which she uses herself, “Buy waterproof makeup. When Cio-Cio says goodbye to her son, I can’t stop crying. It is the most heartbreaking role I have ever danced.”

“The beauty of this story is that it resonates around the world,” said Houston Ballet Artistic Director, Stanton Welch. Indeed, in the 118 years since John Luther Long published the short story, Madame Butterfly, it has been adapted into every single entertainment medium and captured the hearts of hundreds of millions.

Perhaps the most famous recreation is Giacomo Puccini’s opera, which was ridiculed by critics and booed by the audience in 1904. Puccini had been inspired by a short play he watched in London and fell in love with in 1900. Three months after this disastrous debut, and still enamored with the story, he revised the opera and it was a massive success. Today it is one of the most beloved staples in the operatic repertoire around the world.

I N F O C U S: M A DA M E B U T T E R F LY Success follows Butterfly however and wherever it is told: from at least seven movie adaptations, to a Weezer album titled Pinkerton which was loosely based on the opera, few stories capture the imagination and inspire as many translations, here are just a few:

1915: A silent film version was directed by Sidney Olcott and starred Mary Pickford.

1919 a silent film version (titled Harakiri) was directed by Fritz Lang.

•

1922: A silent color film, The Toll of the Sea, based on the opera/play was released.

•

1931: Concise Chōchō-san was done by the Takarazuka Revue.

•

1932: Madame Butterfly, a black and white non-singing drama was made by Paramount starring Sylvia Sidney and Cary Grant.

•

1940: Ochō Fujin no Gensō “Madame Butterfly’s illusion”, a Japanese animation film, is released.

•

1954: Madame Butterfly, a screen adaptation of the opera is aired.

•

1974: Madama Butterfly, a German television adaptation of the opera is produced.

•

1984: British Pop impresario Malcolm McLaren wrote and performed a UK hit single based on the opera.

•

1987: The film Fatal Attraction starring Michael Douglas and Glenn Close makes several references to Madame Butterfly, and the soundtrack features extracts from the opera.

•

1988: David Henry Hwang writes the play M. Butterfly, the story of a French diplomat and a Chinese opera singer, and it runs almost 800 performances and wins the Tony Award for Best Play that year.

•

During some productions, this pause may not occur until the end of the first act.
