About Ballet West From Balanchine to Bournonville, Petipa to Tharp, Ballet West boasts a rich and varied repertoire, elegant and versatile artists, and an American style and legacy that is as dynamic, expansive, and as unexpected as the Rocky Mountain region it represents.

From its humble beginnings in 1963 as the only professional ballet company between Chicago and the West Coast, Ballet West has grown into one of America’s leading ballet companies.

For 60 years, the Salt Lake City-based Company has entertained and excited audiences in Utah and worldwide by presenting the great classical story ballets, including America’s first and longest-running version of The Nutcracker, revivals of rarelyseen historical masterpieces, works by some of the world’s most renowned artists, and new cutting-edge creations by emerging choreographers. The Company also regularly tours both nationally and internationally.

Ballet West was established in Salt Lake City by co-founders Willam F. Christensen, often called the “Godfather of American ballet,” and Utah’s “First Lady of the Arts,” Glenn Walker Wallace.

In 1951, Christensen established the first ballet department in an American university at The University of Utah. Over time, this program grew into the Utah Civic Ballet, Ballet West’s first incarnation. Prior to that, along with his brothers, Lew and Harold, Christensen made history by establishing the oldest full-ballet company in the western United States, the San Francisco Ballet.

Since its inception, Ballet West has had five artistic directors, who have each helped build the Company’s unique and expansive profile – its founder, Willam Christensen, Bruce Marks, John Hart CBE, Jonas Kåge, and for the past 17 years, Adam Sklute, who has overseen the artistic product for the longest sustained growth of the Company since its founding. Ballet West continues to grow and evolve with 39 company members, 14 second company members, a thriving Academy, and one of the world’s largest ballet-based Education and Outreach programs, reaching over 140,000 children and adults throughout Utah and the Intermountain Region every year.

The Frederick Q. Lawson Ballet West (BW) Academy builds future ballet and dance artists and audiences by providing training in classical ballet, flamenco, character, contemporary, hiphop, jazz, and theatrical dance training. The BW Academy has nearly 1,000 students between its four campuses - Salt Lake City, Trolley Corners, Park City, and Utah County. With newlyrenovated student housing, the BW Academy is home to local, national, and international ballet students, with more than 50% of BW Academy students joining Ballet West.

From the Artistic Director Works from Within is a unique program designed to nurture the creative process for Ballet West company artists. The art of choreography is the one art that cannot be fully accomplished alone. Except for creating a solo on oneself, a choreographer must have dancers to choreograph on. So, I built this program to give our artists access to dancers, time, space, and all manner of production elements. Our artists must collaborate with me and each other to determine casting. They must choose music and learn the process of getting music rights. They must work with our costume staff and learn the subtle art of theatrical lighting design.

At the end of last year, Ballet West Artists were invited to submit a written proposal of their choreographic project. I then interviewed the artists and selected a few to create short works at the beginning of this season, working with BWII. The final program selections were based on concept strength and overall program balance.

At the time that I am writing this letter most of the works on display are still being created. It’s exciting to watch our Artists build their ideas. Principal Artists Emily Adams and Katlyn Addison have both created works for BW before. I look forward to seeing what Demi-Soloists Nicole Fannéy and Vinicius Lima produce and what Company Artist Jazz Khai Bynum has produced on our guest collaborators – The Utah Valley Repertory Ballet Ensemble.

This whole program is an exploration. I hope it will be as fulfilling for you as it is for our Artists.

Since 2007, Adam Sklute has expanded Ballet West’s outlook, repertoire, and visibility with exciting Company and world premieres, increased touring, heightened public exposure, and greater focus on the Ballet West Academy. He began his career with The Joffrey Ballet, rising through the ranks from dancer to Associate Director. His stewardship of Ballet West has been marked by both financial growth and elevated artistry, and was the subject of The CW Network’s docu-drama, Breaking Pointe, which aired for two seasons. From September 2016 to October 2017, Sklute took on the dual position of CEO and Artistic Director, overseeing both administrative and artistic operations of Ballet West. An internationally sought-after teacher and adjudicator, Sklute has received numerous awards, including Utah’s Enlightened 50 (2014), The Bronze Minuteman Award for Outstanding Service to Utah and The Nation (2015), and Utah Diversity Connection’s Business Award for outstanding commitment to diversity initiatives. Most recently, Sklute was included in Deseret Magazine’s 25 Changemakers of the West for his efforts to build greater equity and inclusion in classical ballet.

ANDROMEDA

Aethiopia celebrates the birth of Princess Andromeda.

Years later, Andromeda’s beauty and kindness have become legendary.

Queen Cassiopeia boasts that Andromeda surpasses the gods in beauty. This incurs the wrath of Poseidon, who demands the princess as a sacrifice or he will destroy the kingdom and all its people.

In the throne room, as the King and Queen despair and the city pleads, Andromeda bravely offers to save her people and agrees to be sacrificed to the monstrous Cetus.

Perseus, the Greek hero, discovers Andromeda who is tied to the rocks awaiting her fate. He instantly falls in love with her.

Learning that Poseidon has demanded Andromeda’s sacrifice to Cetus, Perseus confronts and defeats the sea monster using Medusa’s head to turn it to stone.

Larsen Costumes: Ballet West Costume Jazz Khai Bynum is named after Jazz music, born of African American origin and characterized by improvisation, syncopation, and a forceful rhythm, along enthusiastic and lively talk. The inspiration for this piece comes from the music, playing with the idea of when we are lost in the rhythm. You know when your favorite song comes on and the beat catches your soul and you must turn the sound all the way up? That is where “With Feeling” exists. A place of peace, freedom, and joy.

Performed by Utah Valley University Repertory Ballet Ensemble, students pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Ballet, offered within the Ballet Program housed in the Department of Dance at Utah Valley University. This collaboration was made possible

Profiles KATLYN ADDISON

Ballet West Principal Artist Choreographer, Andromeda Katlyn Addison, Principal Artist with Ballet West, began her professional ballet training at ten, studying at the National Ballet School of Canada and Houston Ballet Ben Stevenson Academy. In 2011, Katlyn joined Ballet West, progressing to Demi-Soloist (2014), Soloist (2016), and First Soloist (2018), and making history in 2021 as Ballet West's first Black female Principal Artist and receiving the Utah Division of Fine Arts & Museums' Performing Arts Fellowship Award. Addison has been featured in publications like the Huffington Post, Pointe Magazine, Dance Magazine and in 2024, became Pointe Magazine’s Fall Cover Dancer.

Her repertoire spans classical, neoclassical, and contemporary works, including principal roles in productions like John Cranko’s Romeo & Juliet and Onegin, Adam Sklute’s Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty, George Balanchine’s Jewels, and works by William Forsythe, Jiří Kylián, and Jerome Robinson. In 2022 and 2024, she was featured at the Kennedy Center's Reframing the Narrative, performing works by Donald Byrd and Jennifer Archibald.

Addison has choreographed for several ballet companies, including Ballet West (The Hunt, Hidden Voices, and Eden), University of Utah (Saint George), Kansas City Ballet (Sanctuary), Ballet Des Moines, and Ballet Jorgen (There Were TWO). Addison is also committed to community engagement, volunteering with the Redlining Project, I CAN DO, Curly ME, and serves on the Utah Black Artist Collective Board.

Ballet West Demi-Soloist Choreographer, Lingering Echoes Nicole Fannéy is from Cary, North Carolina. She joined the Ballet West Academy as a Trainee in 2016 and Ballet West II in 2018.

She was promoted to the main company in 2020. Nicole began her training at the International Ballet Academy in Cary, North Carolina. She then attended Houston Ballet Academy on full scholarship in 2015, and in the summer of 2016, studied at the Paris Opera Ballet School. In 2015, she was awarded the Grand Prix at the Youth America Grand Prix Tampa Semifinal.

Fannéy performed in Youth America Grand Prix’s Stars of Today Meet the Stars of Tomorrow Gala in Tampa in 2015 and 2016, and in Indianapolis in 2015. With Ballet West, Nicole has danced roles in Sklute’s Swan Lake, Archibald’s Tides, Smuin’s Romeo + Juliet, and Fonte’s Carmina Burana, to name just a few. She has also originated featured roles in works by Sophie LaPlane and Juliano Nunes.

Profiles JAZZ KHAI BYNUM

Ballet West Corps Artist Choreographer, With Feeling Jazz Khai Bynum is from Germantown, Maryland. She joined the Ballet West Academy as a Trainee in 2018 and joined Ballet West II in 2019. She was promoted to the main company in 2021. Jazz trained with Maryland Youth Ballet from 2004-2014 and with Dance Theater of Harlem’s Residency Program at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC from 2004-2011. She graduated from The Boston Conservatory in 2018 with a B.F.A in Contemporary Performance with an emphasis in Ballet, Cum Laude. Jazz also earned her Wedding and Event planning License in 2021.

With Ballet West, Jazz has performed roles in Robinson-Harris and Dolkas’s Snow White, Sklute’s Giselle, Christensen’s The Nutcracker, and Stevenson’s Dracula, among others.

VINICIUS LIMA

Ballet West Demi-Soloist Choreographer, Elis Vinicius Lima is from Vitoria, Brazil where he began dancing through a recreational program in elementary school. The opportunity led him to local competitions in Brazil to the international stage of Youth America Grand Prix in the U.S., where Ballet West Artistic Director Adam Sklute noticed Lima’s potential. He was offered a position as a Ballet West Academy Trainee in 2016 and quickly advanced to Ballet West II in 2018, promoted into the main Company in 2020, and into the role of Demi-Soloist in 2024 where he has danced roles in Cranko’s Onegin, Lubrovich’s Concerto Six Twenty-Two, Laplane’s Galantheae, and Nunus’ Orange, amongst many others.

EMILY ADAMS

Ballet West Principal Artist Choreographer, Mass Hysterical Emily Adams is from Newtown, Pennsylvania. She joined Ballet West II in 2005, the main company in 2007, and was later promoted to Principal in 2015. At 15, Adams was awarded an honorary scholarship to train full-time at the School of American Ballet. With Ballet West, Emily has danced leading roles of Juliet in Smuin’s Romeo + Juliet, Odette/Odile in Sklute’s Swan Lake, Diamonds Pas de Deux in Balanchine’s Jewels, and Cinderella in Ashton’s Cinderella, to name just a few.

Adams has performed as a guest artist and in galas across the country, including for YAGP and the 50th Re-Opening Anniversary Gala of the Chicago Auditorium Theater. She has been featured in Pointe Magazine and other publications multiple times for her work as a dancer, choreographer, and artistic projects outside the studio. Adams began choreographing as a student with her works included in the New York Choreographic Institute’s Spring Session and later six ballets for Ballet West. Adams was awarded the Utah Arts Festival’s Choreographic Commission in 2017 and in July 2022, was one of four choreographers chosen to participate in the National Choreographers Initiative.

Profiles UTAH VALLEY UNIVERSITY’S REPERTORY BALLET ENSEMBLE Guest Company

DEPARTMENT OF DANCE

Repertory Ballet Ensemble (RBE) is the resident company for UVU’s ballet program and is currently under the artistic direction of Jamie A. Johnson and Christa St. John. Since its inception, the ensemble has developed a notable reputation for presenting classical and contemporary works. Dancers have the opportunity to work with national and international guest artists and perform nationally. Past dancers are now dancing professionally, attending graduate programs, and teaching in both private and academic settings.

JONATHAN SANFORD

Composer, Andromeda Jonathan Sanford is a Los Angeles-based composer, music producer, and saxophonist scoring music for films, television, and ballet. He is known for bringing unique sounds and unexpected ideas through an analog exploration process. Sanford’s recent work includes the PBS docu-series "Hope In The Water" (Martha Stewart, Shailene Woodley, and Baratunde Thurston), AppleTV+’s series "Dear Edward," Peacock’s "Killing It" (Craig Robinson), and “National Champions” (J.K. Simmons and Uzo Aduba). He also scored the Emmy-nominated feature documentary "Hold Your Fire" as well as features and series for Netflix, STX Entertainment, Amazon, USA, and IFC. Jonathan was born in Baltimore, Maryland, studying piano and violin before deciding on the saxophone at age nine. He went on to study classical saxophone, under the tutelage of Dr. Frederick Hemke at Northwestern University, where he was also a member of the 1996 Big Ten Championship Football Team.

As a saxophonist and vocalist, Jonathan has shared the stage with legendary artists including Max Roach, Eddie Palmieri, Danilo Perez, and Bobby McFerrin.

KATY JARZEBOWSKI

Composer, Mass Hysterical Katy Jarzebowski is a composer scoring music for film and ballet. With a great enthusiasm for the bold and unexpected, her work balances dynamic orchestral writing with elements of sound design, electronics, and fearless instrumentations. Her music for Emmy-winning THE FIRE THAT TOOK HER (MTV Docs) was nominated for a 2022 IDA Best Score Award, and in 2023, her score for BUBJAN won a Hollywood Music in Media Award.

In addition to film scoring, Katy has been collaborating with choreographer Emily Adams since The Thing With Feathers, co-commissioned by Ballet West and The Sundance Institute in 2021. Together, they’ve created five original commissions for stage. Katy graduated from Yale University and earned a Masters in Music at NYU, where she studied with Pulitzer Prize-winner Julia Wolfe. She was a composer fellow at the 2014 Sundance Music and Sound Design Lab at Skywalker Sound and selected for Berlinale Talents 2024. Katy is forever grateful to her parents for the fire in her belly and her grandparents for sharing their love of music.

House Rules To ensure the enjoyment of the majority of our patrons who arrive on time, and in deference to the artists, latecomers will not be admitted to the auditorium until there is an appropriate pause in the performance. During some productions, this pause may not occur until the end of the first act.

• All casting is subject to change.

• For your own safety and the safety of other patrons, please do not exit the Theatre before the house lights are up.

• Any use of cameras and recording equipment in the Theatre, which is not authorized by the management, is strictly prohibited.

• No babes in arms.

• No smoking is permitted in the auditorium.

• Outside food and beverages are not allowed in the auditorium; as a courtesy to all patrons in attendance, food consumption is discouraged in the theatre during the performance.

• Lost articles may be claimed at security.

• Anyone expecting emergency calls is urged to leave their seat locations and cell phones with the house manager.

• Please silence all electronic timepieces and cell phones for the period of the performance.

EMERGENCY EVACUATION INFORMATION In the event of an emergency, please REMAIN SEATED and listen to information given by management and ushers.
