DIRECTOR’S NOTE
Tapestry is the first record I truly remember getting – yes, a vinyl record that I played on a record player – not stereo – in my bedroom. For people, especially women, of a certain age this album was groundbreaking. Carole King’s emergence as a singer/songwriter coincided with the women’s liberation movement in this country and was part of a changing culture that enabled me as a teenager to look at women in the arts as creators as well as performers. Fortunately, I was young enough that it never occurred to me that a woman couldn’t do those jobs, which turned out well for me.
The amazing thing about Carole King is that she had a giant career before she became “Carole King, Singer/Songwriter.” Her work as a composer with lyricist and husband Gerry Goffin includes more than 100 songs that made the Billboard singles chart. These hits were performed by iconic artists including: The Drifters, The Shirelles, The Everly Brothers, and The Beatles. She is probably the most prolific female pop songwriter of all time.
Beautiful not only encompasses all the nostalgia that music of the 60s and 70s evokes when you turn on oldies radio (or iTunes playlists), but also a freshness. We’re learning about Carole King’s life through stories we maybe didn’t know—thrillingly told through the powerful medium of live performance and the glorious songs that are woven into the tapestry of American popular music. I am grateful to my collaborators and to this extraordinary cast of singer, actor, dancers who are so stylishly bringing this show to life. I know you will enjoy it!

GERRY GOFFIN (Words and Music) Born in Brooklyn in 1939, Gerry Goffin met Carole King at Queens College, and their musical collaboration began almost immediately. Goffin has left an indelible mark on American music.
CAROLE KING (Words and Music) Pop music would be very different without the contributions of Carole King, who at age 17 wrote her first #1 hit with Gerry Goffin, “Will You Love Me Tomorrow,” for the Shirelles. The dozens of chart hits Goffin and King wrote during this period became legendary, but it was 1971’s Tapestry that took King to the pinnacle, speaking personally to her contemporaries and providing a spiritual musical backdrop to the decade. More than 400 of her compositions have been recorded by over 1,000 artists, resulting in 100 hit singles and six Grammys.

He has been inducted into both the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
CYNTHIA WEIL (Words and Music) was the acclaimed lyricist of classic songs such as “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling,” the most-played song of the 20th century. In addition to the songs heard in Beautiful, she set the words to later standards including “Somewhere Out There,” “Here You Come Again,” “He’s So Shy,” “Just Once” and “Don’t Know Much,” to name just a few. Weil was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, honored with multiple Grammy nominations and two Grammy awards for “Somewhere Out There” as the Motion Pictures Song of the Year and Song of the Year. MANAGING DIRECTOR’S
Dear Friends of Pioneer Theatre Company,
As we prepare to raise the curtain on Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, I’m thrilled to share some exciting updates about what’s happening at PTC.
Our recent production of Dial M for Murder was met with tremendous enthusiasm, and the feedback from our patrons has been nothing short of inspiring. We’re so proud of the success of Pride Night, where a vibrant, diverse crowd came together to celebrate the arts and a sense of belonging. Similarly, the energy at the University of Utah’s Hype Night was electric, as we welcomed students to their theatre home. These moments remind us of theatre’s incredible power to unite and inspire.
This past January, we came together to honor the enduring legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through service, spending an afternoon volunteering at the Utah Food Bank as part of PTC Gives Back. Giving back is a reflection of the gratitude we feel for this incredible community that has embraced and supported us. As PTC embraces volunteerism, I invite you to do the same. Even small acts of kindness create ripples of change, strengthening the community that enriches us all.
Looking ahead, we’re thrilled to announce a new partnership with Cowboy Properties. Through this collaboration, residents of Cowboy Properties’ communities will enjoy special access to tickets. This initiative aligns with our mission to make world-class theatre accessible to as many people as possible, and we’re eager to welcome these new patrons to the PTC family.
As we continue our journey, your support and enthusiasm are invaluable. We invite you not only to keep attending our productions but also to help us spread the word about PTC. Share your experiences, bring a friend, and let others know about the transformative power of live theatre. Together, we can ensure that PTC remains a vibrant part of our community for years to come.
Thank you for being an essential part of our story. Enjoy the show, and we look forward to seeing you again soon!
Warm regards,
Adrian Budhu Managing Director
